My Dad played me Sing Sing Sing right before I first picked up a pair of sticks, back in '84. The performance at the beginning of the video, I bought as a cassette in '91 and it was played as often as my Rush albums. Then I find out that amazing live album was filmed! That was a good day. The album was Gene Krupa, Ace Drumming Man. It was yellow.
I hear ya ! The recording was Benny Goodman " Live at Carnegie Hall " ! Wow!😂 I think 1938. Gene's solo in " Sing, Sing, Sing " always knocks me out 😂😅!!

I thought COZY COLE was also a super Rhythm based dummer His big hit topsy parts 1&2, was a big hit I love it . I have it on my play list. I war it out I had to get another
I love Krupa, Rich and Bellson. They just made the most difficult drum parts look so easy because they were smiling and having a blast the entire time! Big Band..the best!
Rich was off his face most of the time. Bellson and Krupa had way more credibility than arrogant Rich, who's nasty demeanor was due to his weed intake.
My dad loved g Krupa the best throughout the ‘30’s and then through the ‘40’s when he was in ww2. In the navy he took his entire record collection will him. And keep following him
I bet he was crazy fast in his youth. A sight to see in this vid w/ Sing, Sing, Sing. He’s in several movies as a drummer in scenes…but he’s not showcasing. Thank you Carlo.
I got weary of Bellson's obvious sour grapes about Krupa, and Bellson trying to "blow his own horn," and had to stop watching this at about the 23-minute mark..."Gene Krupa told me and Buddy that we could play circles around him." "I went to Gene Krupa's house many times, and Krupa was always asking me how I played this or how I played that, he was like a little kid asking me questions." (LOL. When Bellson was 2 years old, Gene Krupa had already begun playing drums professionally.) "Gene Krupa was a solid drummer, but it was mainly just his showmanship that made him stand out." Damn...LOL...Bellson was REALLY sour grapes about Gene Krupa...and it was very obvious.
I"m gonna say it. Gene is a better drummer than Rich. why? because he was so musical in what he did. He understood the band and the audience. He was also way on the cutting edge. I have heard Buddy in a small combo and frankly, in a small combo setting RIch stunk! Rich was good in a big band. Gene could go anywhere and make it good cause he let the music flow baby!
I’ve been saying this for decades. Of course it depends on your preference, but I’ve always leaned towards more musical drummers and Gene was that over Buddy. The ladder had blazing technique and if you’re into that stuff, then you’re gonna prefer him most likely. Joe Morello seems to be a combination of the two which lands him on my number one spot.
Please, there were so many better, Rich was just overexposed in media, especially on the tonight show with his pal Carson. All I hear in a Buddy Rich solo is fast noise, not music. Every top-shelf drummer is fast but you rarely see them playing fast because fast isn't music😮
Gene Krupa’s drum solo in Sing Sing Sing was the genesis of drum solos for the last hundred years! His misses are the best in the world…
Was a great drummer, unique, own style, not a snob like some of them. More talented then other drummers at that time.
Best drummer!
Drumming wasn’t considered an ART FORM in those days. It was a necessary percussion.
Louis Bellson was a class act, always
humble and quick to praise other drummers. I had the good fortune to see his big band in the 1980’s.
I agree, I saw him as well in the 1980's
A humble man 👍🎶

Just look at the musicians smiling on Leave us Uptown!! Beautiful
Wow….this is one of Gene’s most musical and exciting solos….
good memories of his Ed Sullivan performances and seeing my dad laugh with glee and astonishment at this extremely entertaining percussion ace .
Everything is so incredibly musical! Love that rendition of Caravan.

A very underrated stickman. Always played for the song. Very musical in his approach. His solos and fills reflected and respected the music.
World's greatest drummer for more than 25 years!
My personal opinion is that GK is the most musical drummer who’s ever lived.

John Densmore also would place flowers on a cymbal. Many would use a chain to give it a sizzle.
GK and Sing Sing Sing were why I became a drummer. Always entertained how his drummer's face looked like he was having a stroke when he played. 😄

The jazz drummers were the coolest in my view. Ginger Baker was first a jazz drummer, then he added a double bass and became a wild man rock drummer.
All these musicians were the real thing. Most musicians were respected then and had to be top tier players or get blown off the stage.
What a drummer.
That break at 19:22 is the most killer move I've ever seen.
Just look at Gene’s paradiddles and flams!
My very first influence in my own drumming career

Rubbish! Louis is consistently praising Gene throughout this and had great respect for Gene's playing and his style.
the pot calling the kettle black ! who's a sour grape , it's not Bellson could it be you.... 🤔
I saw that sequence and never detected even a trace of sour grapes.
But, Greg, we used to have a grey cat.
Opus 51 solo one of the best!!
Just to say what gene Krupa does in this video take a real talent skill is real music not rock noise mucho loud I love it
First time seeing this, and what a treat. It is so the first time seeing a priest doing an interview with Gene. What's the story about this monsignor?
When gene got going I swear it makes you cream your jeans, wow!
Did you hear Eddie Shu quote Jobim's Desafinado at 3:30?

Ever wonder what these old legends would do with Terry Bozzios set?
Deem most of it unnecessary?
Who is Terry Bozzios?
How about Milton Fenwick?
One of three drum masters
Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Carl Palmer
Max Roach kills em all
@@rolandpotter479MAX pushed the art form forward
