  • Ultravox - Frozen ones 1978
    Marching across our own screens
Our faces form all our needs
    The future's not returning
    All bridges built for burning
How can there be anything wrong?
    Aren't we the frozen ones?
One day I'll just erase the tape
    Wave goodbye and fade away
Get lost in the frost again
Clean the ashes of my face
At the bottom of your suitcase
    Find a sunset, turn away
How can there by anything wrong?
    Aren't we the frozen ones?
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
We walk around inside each other
    Visiting the empty rooms
Put me on, I'll put you on too
You knew I'd have to follow you
Because you saw I'm hollow too
But it's so nice being I too
How can there by anything wrong?
    Aren't we the frozen ones?
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
    We're nowhere
We don't care who led us here
No one will care when we're gone
    (Instrumental)
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
Too many pictures on my screen
And all of them are screaming at me
    Thought I had this insulation
The only way to stop the flood
    Whenever feelings get too real
    Is to cut the information
How can there be anything wrong?
    Aren't we the frozen ones?
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
    We're nowhere
We don't care who led us here
No one will care when we're gone
    (Instrumental)
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones
    The frozen ones

Pity he delved into utter nonsense after The Garden aligning himself with Gary Spewman and his absurd half assed attempts
The best of Dennis was with Ultravox!
The best was on albums 1 and 2 .3 was too clean for my liking
Though it contains some excellent songs 🎵
I discovered them late 76 and they stood out even during the punk era late 75 to late 77 after that any punks that were lefy were of the ridiculous mohican variety
As I call them establishment punks
But Ultravox! Note the exclamation mark!
They dissolved into utter plastic nonsense through Cambuslang jimmy ie Ure and his cluttered culture and im a Scotsman
Foxx distracted himself from I think his true potential
Dennis is a good man and his visuals based on a sliderule of DaDa and Surrealism which he undetstood pity the music didnt match it
But those albums with Ultravox! And Metamatic and The Garden were his greatest contribution to music ❤

Saw them in a small club 78 - could hardly take my eyes off Foxx - totally mesmerising throughout, strobe lighting to Currie's rocking fiddle solos made him look as though he was a 'frozen one'. They rate top, along with Dr Feelgood, in my memories of favourite 70's gigs.

"The Frozen Ones" from their 2nd album Ha!-Ha!-Ha! (1977). Ultravox! their debut self titled album (1977). Systems Of Romance their 3d album (1978), John Foxx's last album with Ultravox, and first and last album with guitarist Robin Simon who replaced Stevie Shears. The 3 best albums recorded by Ultravox which unfortunately were underrated. I was in my early 20's when those albums were released.

There are some songs from that concert that are uploaded on RUclips. The one song that I do remember at that concert that John Foxx sang is "Touch and Go" which is on his solo debut album "Metamatic". Ultravox is a band with two faces. Both times are great. John Foxx is another type of singer and performer than Midge Ure. I like both phases. John Foxx in his solo era is awesome. The sound of 'Burning Car' and 'Underpass' was never topped. Ultravox with Midge Ure was an another kind of music with a light commercial touch, but not bad. Astradyne, Vienna, The Voice, I Remember ... and many more.

This band was the absolute best. What a treat to see an Ultravox video I teration with Steven Shears! Those first two records really defined the notion of what art rock was. Up there with the first two Roxy Music records. Just incredible ideas. Amazing bands, but playing things that were never played on this world before. Brilliant production. Great players. Great looks.
Very sad that we have to put up with the dreck we do today. I was very glad to have been in my formative years when all this stuff came out. It was just a ridiculous amount of talent from things like Ultravox, to Magazine, to Wire. On and on. Music was about art. And especially about ideas.

Stevie Shears was let go from the band, which was unfortunate because he is a good guitarist. The reason why he was let go is because he didn't want to move forward musically - creative wise (hence, like their 3d album 'Systems of Romance'). Stevie Shears still wanted to keep on playing punk rock only.

I always thought it a little sad that John went on to have what can be best described as a 'mediocre' career (but whose solo work I incidentally, adore) whilst the lads he left in his wake went on to be superstars....

Totally agree John but I always had the impression JF wasn't unhappy about it.

So very true. Been working with Barry Andrews of Shriekback lately. They're still going strong. About to release their 13th studio album

***** Sad it may be, but honestly, from what you could see at the time he was falling behind at a fast pace. Talent is also the wisdom of adapting to the trends, and that he did not have. That is roughly the definition of mediocre: barely adequate.

***** Hardly "superstars". John had a few hits in the early 80s and more recently has made some fantastic ambient music with ambient pioneer Harold Budd.

Mediocre? Surely not. He went on to teach the Graphic Arts & Design degree course at Leeds Metropolitan University in the 1980s.

Too bad it's not live, but then again guess that's why such good quality's available... incidentally, all the Midge-haters really need to get a life since John did walk out leaving Ultravox badly in the lurch... as later did Midge, of course. Two distinct bands, both with an awful lot to give.

There is still no love lost at all between John and the rest of the band (one clue: none of them will admit Foxx's Touch & Go off Metamatic has the same tune as Mr X). A reunion is as likely as Weller getting back with Buckler & Foxton. There was a third Ultravox which is never talked about, and for good reason: Tony Fenelle and Billy Currie.
