  • Micah "Kwonkicker" Brock and I teamed up to hold a Taekwondo for Kickboxing seminar, followed by some full-contact sparring!

    After a long hiatus due to a serious health condition (tinnitus), my friend Kwonkicker is back to training & teaching again! I had him over to stay at my place for a few days, where we filmed a bunch of tutorials, taught a striking seminar here in Los Angeles, and capped it off with a friendly sparring session where we flowed with our blended Taekwondo & Muay Thai backgrounds. Check out the full sparring session on Micah's channel below!

    @Kwonkicker is a legend!
    For anyone who doesn't know, Kwonkicker had a medical condition that made him have to back off from martial arts. It was head and I think inner ear-related.
    Was surprised to see him back to sparring! But I am sure that's a big part of the reason why they pulled away from full contact to the head.
    God bless Kwonkicker and I hope he is feeling better! Still a BAMF!

      That's actually really motivational to hear as when I was younger I used to do taekwondo 5 days a week, 4-5 hours a day and as much sparring as I could get my hands on over the course of 3-4 years. Got up to 175 lbs doing it then unfortunately started living with a friend and because I had to support him ended up neglecting eating and over the course of a year dropped down to 120 while consequently suffering a neck injury from a trampoline incident and couldn't turn my head to the left for over a month and now whenever I throw a heavy punch or kick I get a pounding headache in the back of my skull. Trying to get back into taekwondo to get back to and surpass how I used to be

    I tend to do the one where I let the roundhouse kick drop to the ground as a setup for the sidekick, but I'll have to try that one with it in the air in sparring soon. I've done it before in the air but for some reason never used it in sparring, especially with a jab cross setup to the roundhouse, I think I can really land it as that's a set up I already like to do for a fully invested roundhouse kick.

    Shane can you do a video on how to have control while kicking, especially for the side kick.. I lean back with my body like you showed in this video, so I don't know if it's a flexibility issue or my muscles aren't strong enough to control it. I'm a big heavyweight with big strong legs so kicking isn't as easy. Roundhouse kicks, spinning back/heel kicks go relatively easy, just some more flexibility needed, but I'm struggling with the side kick. I do have a karate background (brown belt) from when I was young and was able to do side kicks, but as i said I've put on a lot of weight and muscle since then.
