    I completely agree about self diagnosing!! The mental health professionals don’t make things easier when they don’t like to diagnose though. It puts patients in very hard positions :(

    • @martyna1961
      @martyna1961 4 года назад +7

      Omg! I agree with you! My mental health has been bad since I was 13 and now I'm 18. At 13 it was extremely bad but I manged to deal with it but after I turned 17 it hit me again. I did go to counselling and hospitals etc and they all kept asking if I'm on medication for my mood swings etc and I was meant to see a professional to check if I have an illness but then they changed their minds because they don't like to put labels on young people... So I could literally have something but they won't tell me! Ahh! I try to do research on different things because now I'm much better and I'll talk to those that know me and ask them questions but I'd only ever say "I think I have this because.............." I think self diagnosing can be dangerous and put others who actually suffer with that illness down.

      Martyna that’s so bad! I’m in a similar situation! My care team keep saying they won’t diagnose me because I’m too young (even though I’m 19) and I’ve researched a lot but I don’t want to self diagnose or tell them what I think I have in case I don’t have it but I cant get the right help unless they know what I have 😖 it’s so difficult

      Yep !! I finally found the courage to make an appointment at the doctors for my mental health (last time I went I was 13 and I am now 18) I mentioned I’m open to trying medication and the doctor basically said it’s probably due to my age and there’s a lot of change going on, and basically shoved me aside and told me to register to iapts (if that’s how you spell it🤦🏼‍♀️) I just want answers I want a diagnosis it’s so hard when you know something isn’t right and the average person doesn’t deal with these issues. I diagnosis would deffo help as the I have an answer to why I’m like this.

    • @martyna1961
      @martyna1961 4 года назад +1

      prinssescool I completely understand.. it just feels like they’re not listening and taking you seriously.. But keep pestering the doctor. And I know reaching out for help can be discouraging when the health team are like that. But at the end of the day, you know you’re not ok. So you fight for your happiness and wellbeing. Just like you’d fight for surgery if your organs weren’t working properly. You’ve got this! ❤️

    • @martyna1961
      @martyna1961 4 года назад

      Jade Smith Yes! We know our bodies better than anyone! And if we know something isn’t ok then why can’t doctors understand that? It’s so frustrating.. Just because it’s not physically visible doesn’t mean it’s not there.. And that can make things so discouraging.. Like I tried phoning the doctor a few days actually and they wouldn’t call and took forever and then at the end I gave up with it which makes me mad because if I said I think I have COVID-19 they’d call me straight away. Physical and mental illness are the same, they both impact lives negatively. And having a diagnosis wouldn’t be fun but if you know that something’s up then it’s better just knowing and getting proper help. Just keep annoying the health team. Even tell them the symptoms you’re experiencing and what you think you might have and explain to them how it’s impacting your life. Everything will be ok, you’ll get the help and feel better soon, I promise! ❤️

    Agree with you on the BPD subject. It seems like over the past 10 years BPD became like "fashionable" with mental health services. Like suddenly loads of people were being diagnosed, and this is great when they would previously have been misdiagnosed with other things, but loads of particularly young women have been diagnosed with it unnecessarily. Like if you almost "grow out of" the behaviours that mean you have a BPD diagnosis then you probably didn't have it in the first place

    • @ZoeToMyRight
      @ZoeToMyRight 4 года назад +1

      @@neurodivergentdawn I more mean specifically BPD as opposed to other mental health diagnoses because labelling symptoms to be part of a personality disorder can mean they're seen as ingrained or deep seated parts of your formed personality, when actually they could be treated quite simply as part of another psychiatric diagnosis (of course I don't mean simply but relative). But I absolutely get what you mean - even if you come to the conclusion that a diagnosis is wrong it does exclude it and that can be helpful.

  • @gemmi1
    @gemmi1 4 года назад +10

    BPD/EUPD is so often misdiagnosed for people. It's like the easiest diagnose to give and it makes me so angry. I was labelled with EUPD for so long and my symptoms were dismissed as it was "symptoms of your diagnosis" - if I was suicidal my CPN would say "it's just a symptom of your illness" and I hated it so much. I've since been diagnosed with complex trauma, attachment trauma, OSFED, major depression, anxiety, depersonalisation, psychosis and BDD. Now my doctors actually listen to me and take me seriously and are treating me with the right medication.

      BPD is a toxic diagnosis in my opinion. it hurts the people diagnosed and ignores the real issues like childhood trauma. i never felt this way until i was diagnosed. mental health professionals will diagnose any female with complex mental health with a personality disorder so quickly! i know it helps some people, so if people want to use it as a tool to get better thats okay, but i cant help but notice it makes people feel trapped and 'ill.' the best thing i did for my mental health was discharge myself from the services and research complex trauma and attachment styles....

      i really want to get that diagnosis removed now. one i was so desperate for as a teen. i wanted to know what was 'wrong with me.' i fear if i ever have a crisis again i wont be taken seriously

      Bpd is just a behavior for me in my opinion not a personality, it is a toxic diagnoses. So thankful to see people speaking about this. Dont let diagnosed ruin your self care and image especially when they are wrong diagnoses....

    I myself was misdiagnosed with bpd before it was decided I have bipolar. I also feel like once your diagnosed with bpd it’s so hard getting it changed if it is realised it’s wrong. I definitely agree with you that it’s diagnosed too often and too quickly.

      This is interesting, I believe people think BPD is diagnosed too often because we're currently in a period of dramatically increased research and understanding of BPD. Just like with bipolar and ADHD when they became better understood and more frequently diagnosed, people thought that they were being overdiagnosed. Personally, I'm a proponent of diagnosing BPD early because it provides access to specialized treatment like DBT, emotion regulation etc and usually doesn't respond well to standard depression treatments. I think BPD is under-diagnosed in a lot of places because of the stigma clinicians have toward the diagnosis and not wanting to stigmatize their patients. It's a really interesting discussion!

    • @CalliopeFlowerFarm
      @CalliopeFlowerFarm 4 года назад +14

      I also think BPD is overdiagnosed in some populations (i.e. white women who self-harm) and grievously under-diagnosed in other populations (people of colour, men who present as angry/aggressive, etc)

    • @martyna1961
      @martyna1961 4 года назад +2

      Really? This is so strange to me how both of you think this.. I never heard of BPD until I started watching Marie and then did research on it. I never heard of anyone being diagnosed with it either. I thought it was a silent illness that people don't talk about..

  • @invisiblehuman2841
    @invisiblehuman2841 4 года назад +33

    I think people should reference diagnosing with the same as a physical illness. Like for example if you think you have cancer then you might look up on the symptoms but you don’t just say you have cancer even if you do have all the symptom sorta thing? Great video as always Marie 💗

    I believe bpd isn’t supposed to be diagnosed until after 18 for the reason you said. Can’t/ shouldn’t be diagnosed until personality and brain is fully developed which is after teen years. Xx

    • @CalliopeFlowerFarm
      @CalliopeFlowerFarm 4 года назад +7

      This is a common misperception; antisocial personality disorder is the only personality disorder that requires you to be 18 before diagnosis. Being diagnosed with BPD younger is very helpful as it provides access to treatment before symptoms worsen into adulthood. (Source: I have a BA in psych with a clinical focus)

    • @user-lu4vv4mq3m
      @user-lu4vv4mq3m 4 года назад +3

      Bethany Urban Farm hey, thank you for this comment. i found it extremely difficult to be diagnosed with BPD under the age of 18 and when i did, it really really benefited my treatment path. especially in the UK, it’s so hard to be taken seriously and my diagnosis is what got me to DBT and the right help. it really saved me from so many awful situations. i can understand why people think it shouldn’t be diagnosed before 18 but i definitely think there are cases where teens are struggling with it and are dismissed because of this misconception. so thank you

    • @emilycanon9716
      @emilycanon9716 Год назад

      I totally agree! Although I think that if someone has been experiencing strong symptoms for more than a year and they are 16 or over it is right. I was diagnosed at 17 but only because I had been experiencing symptoms ever since I was very young and they just kept getting worse rather than better, along with psychosis. So I believe that if someone is nearing their 18th birthday then in SOME cases it is okay

  • @ellamaria9547

    having a diagnosis is a privilege. it can be nearly impossible to get a diagnosis. self diagnosing opens up the world. im not self diagnosed, but many of my friends are and their journeys dont make mine any less real.

  • @sadbluen
    @sadbluen 4 года назад +7

    I'm totally with you on the self-diagnosis thing, I think it's okay to research but unless you have a diagnosis you should say "I strongly suspect that I have x" instead of presenting it as a fact
    Same for physical illness, I got my diagnosis because I did a lot of research to find potential answers and then went to the right specialist because general practitioners couldn't figure it out, but until I got diagnosed with EDS, I only told my symptoms and not the actual illness (even though I turned out to be right)

    Completely agree that BPD is over diagnosed and clinicians are to quick to diagnose BPD instead of looking at why someone may be acting/feeling the way they are. Like you said people grow up and develop different coping strategies to life.. add in the trauma and other shitty life situations people have been through and it’s no surprise people struggle! I’m all for trauma informed care instead of BPD 😎

  • @toni5543

    I felt a bit defensive at the start. Gp told me to attempt suicide to get real help (NHS Scotland). Now years later I've finally started private therapy to work towards a diagnosis. My daily symptoms include: times where I have anxiety, no appetite, sleeping 12+ hours and still being exhausted, my body can feel so heavy I can't hold myself up or balance properly. Lack of appetite and self sabotage. I also have blocks of time where I feel so high on life and hyper positive about myself and the future. I can be so so productive and organised and need very little sleep to function. I loose my appetite during times like this too. I just don't feel hungry.
    Now the reason I feel like I NEED therapy is because I recently admitted to myself and came to terms with the reality of what I believe was a psychosis episode. I was extremely depressed and this developed into full blown detachment from reality. visual hallucinations (scary things). I also heard voices telling me to hurt myself. They would scream so loudly I couldn't think my own thoughts. I suffered from delusions too where i locked myself into a room in school and refused to come out because I was convinced if I left the empty room I would die. My guidance counselor had to take my best friend from class to talk me down as I couldn't trust anyone else. I tried to do really bizarre things and had so many alarming behaviours. If my mother wasn't so mentally unwell herself I would have absolutely been hospitalised years ago. She was the only person I told about my worst experiences and my mum told me it was all normal for her so I didn't realise others brains are not like ours.
    I want to have kids in the next few years and having babies triggered extreme episodes for my mother so I need to put the work in now.

    When you said how young, hormonal and emotional people who are all over the place are typically the ones in the BPD category... I don't think that is very true. I am almost 35 and I have several of the traits. As I said below, I am still uncertain of what is going on in my head but I can say that I am definitely not young and I am very emotional, anxious and I experience feelings in a very deep way.

    BPD cake hahaha. If you're interested on remission from BPD, it's one of my favourite topics. Check out Dr. Mary Zanarini's longitudinal studies of remission. She looks at symptom and diagnostic remission over 6, 10 and 20 year periods. Fun fact: suicidal and self-injurious symptoms are the fastest to remit, and affective symptoms are the least likely to remit (i.e. emotional sensitivity, lability, etc)

I struggled so badly with mental health issues since the age of 17 , i felt like i had compltely lost my mind and that i was living in a world that tbh i did not belong in , i find it hard sometimes to just be alive . Function and hold down a job which can make my bpd symptoms even worse , was finally diagnosed by a psychiatrist at age 21 with borderline personality disorder and possible bi polar . I am on a medication called quetiapine a anti psychtoic drug it manages my highs and lows but i still struggle with seeing things and hearing voices . Have you ever struggled with these syptoms and do you have any coping mechabisms ?

    Self diagnose nope, write things that happen to you for a doctor yes, but sometimes a doctor can't even give a diagnosis immediately because the brain is so bloody complicated, so it can take a while sometimes, but they find out what it is in the end.

    About the self diagnosis, i feel like its very wrong because some illnesses can have symptoms that look VERY similar. I still don't have a certain diagnosis, but there was a time that i was sure that i had bpd and started showing more bpd symptoms because i thought i had it! Today i don't think i have it, i feel like i'm more on the bipolar espectrum, its still being investigated. Self diagnosing can be tricky! Bipolar people can have bpd symptoms, just like bpd people can have depression symptoms, and anxiety. And about your diagnosis, i know nothing about your life, but do you feel like you could be bipolar? Because of your depression, and the psychosis episode you had?

    I think you're AUDHD autistic and adhd, i've been misdiagnosed with literally everything, from bpd to bipolar, all the meds under the sun i've taken, nothing works for long. My story is very similar to yours. I've only now just been diagnosed with stress induced psychosis which fits FAR better than anything else, also have ocd which caused me to be so incredibly paranoid and actually learning how to accommodate myself, has stopped me from reaching the point where I would completely lose myself.

      my journey has taken 10 years btw, I'm on the track of been seeing a psychiatrist after self diagnosing autism and adhd, it was the only way for me to understand myself because nobody was listening or letting me get theright treatment that i really needed. the diagnosis journey tskes a long time, i waited 8 months to the started seeing her exactly a year ago and still no formal papers yet but the diagnosis is set in.

    • @lfairy6130

      I'm on the right meds, low dose of seroqual which is helping the adhd sooo much, stops the mania, helps the insane anxiety and paranoia, helps the ocd thouhts that stops everything reach psychosis. I still get incredibly attached to people but honestly that comes down to all the bullying and isolation i went through as a kid at school.

    Love watching your videos! Watching again. Also, where is your top from?! ❤ Love watching your videos! Looking forward to this. Also, where is your top from?! ❤ A video suggestion, have you ever watched Crazy Ex Girl friend? It's a fun musical kind of t.v series, can't remember where I watched it but its all about a woman with bpd and its a very long series and yes they are using mostly her love relationships as a way to portray bpd traits but once you get past that I think there are some fascinating and good parts. If you can watch it to the end it would be amazing to hear your thoughts on it! ❤ Lastly, I think its normal to no longer relate to bpd. Bpd therapy is different specifically because its an illness that is primary a personality but also social disorder and its about working on changing how you think. There are medical aspects too that can come with it and medicaction can help get people to a point where they can do therapy.

    A recurring doubt of yours has been this BPD diagnosis for sure. I wonder how you haven't been reassessed, it seems like a frustrating matter (which is understandable). It could be that DBT really helped and your BPD symptoms have improved to the point of it no longer being debilitating. Unfortunately, self harm and anorexia are associated with BPD, and like you said, young, emotional and depressed plus being very sensitive = stick that BPD label. In my case, the mood disorder now diagnosed as bipolar was evident, and a lot of my symptoms were due to PTSD. I did and do not have BPD symptoms, but sometimes OCPD comes up (turns out I just have Asperger's!). The diagnoses aren't always accurate, especially when an illness becomes complex and multifactorial.
    Childhood/adolescence traumatic events play into a diagnosis, especially for PDs.
    I suppose that if you already had a sense of self, a not too great fear of abandonment and weren't impulsive and constantly reacting, a BPD dx would be impertinent. In your case, maybe psychosis just "translated" into BPD. I don't really know.
    Pretty much. Those are the elements I'd explore to determine if/where a mistake has been made (:
    With your initial dx being depression and anxiety and your evolving mental health, it could be a misdiagnosis or simply no longer relevant. Though, I am glad to hear you say you don't suffer from BPD symptoms anymore. It is very encouraging for people who have the dx.
    Your INTJ x

    Dialectical Behavioral Therapy .... would your therapist recommend you try this if they think you have BPD? So if a therapist says that to you, should you feel confident that they are saying you have BPD? Or would they recommend this to you if you have other possible diagnoses? Is DBT just used for people with BPD? I am still not sure what is going on with me quite honestly. I know I have moderate to severe depression and situational anxiety (based on what my doctor said) but I haven't been actually diagnosed with a specific mental disorder...

    • @abigailchappell5754

      My understanding is that DBT began as a treatment for BPD, but they have found it to be applicable to many many mental health disorders. I know there is a DBT-specific clinic near me, and it was suggested to me to help with my anxiety and depression. And when I was in eating disorder treatment, we had a weekly DBT group. As far as I know, none of us had BPD (or at least that wasn't the norm)-- They just thought DBT skills would help us recover from our EDs.

    I'll start off saying, I have no qualifications whatsoever in the field of MH. I have however spoken to a psychiatrist about personality disorders (out of interest) the comments about not fitting the criteria anymore confused me, from what I know(please correct me if I'm wrong) you can never be 'cured' from bpd since it's a personality disorder. Wouldn't that just wither be a misdiagnosis or you've learned to control the symptoms more but you'll always have it? Please if anyone knows about BPD can you explain, thanks!

    • @TheMarkedGirl717
      @TheMarkedGirl717 4 года назад +1

      BPD is known to calm down with age so you can definitely end up at a point where you're essentially cured because your symptoms are much less severe or gone essentially. That's pretty common. So I wouldn't say it's a forever thing. Personality isn't completely set in stone after all. You're probably always likely to experience other mental health issues when life gets extra hard even if the BPD calms down a lot though.

      @TheMarkedGirl717 4 года назад

      @@socialside5332 Yeah, I think that's a horrible view to uphold. I've also never seen anyone with BPD who hasn't gotten better or basically cured with age/time eventually so it's clearly not uncommon. Maybe it's less common among other personality disorders so BPD is seen the same by professionals.
