    ⚠️ TIKTOK ⚠️
    If your child or yourself use tiktok to watch videos please take their device away from them for 72 hours. Come off tiktok yourself too. There is a video going around you literally only need to open tiktok to see it, of a man live streaming his suicide. Someone has took the video is now sharing this over Tiktok with the link attached so you can psychically watch it, you do not need to verify your age before you watch it !!! He takes a gun and shots himself in the face.
    Please for the safety of your child take their devices away.
    Tiktok are apparently aware of the situation
    The man has long hair and beard with glasses if you see the image come off!
    PLEASE DO NOT GO SEARCHING FOR THE VIDEO IT IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO WATCH AND HAVE IN YOUR MIND !

    you hit the nail on the head with "if you are seIf-harming, *there is a problem* ", no matter what the reason you do it.
    If you seIf-harm because your friends self-harm, *there is a problem* ,
    if you seIf-harm out of curiosity, *there is a problem* ,
    if you seIf-harm for attention, *there is a problem* ,
    if you seIf-harm FOR ANY REASON, *there is a problem* and YOU DESERVE HELP AND CARE!
    As you said, seIf-harm is a SYMPTOM of a deeper issue, which is a problem that needs to be addressed, NOT dismissed.

    Self harm in school is such a difficult topic to discuss.. I remember I was first introduced to it at the age of 12 because I had a friend who was struggling with depression and was doing it. Then I started doing it at 13 and life genuinely became difficult. I wouldn't ever blame the friend but I found out that people do that through that friend.
    But the competition is definitely extremely scary.. I used to be part of a friendship group (at the age of 13-15) were all members of it struggled with their mental health and at the time I didn't realise it but now looking back, they were all in competition with each other for "who's most depressed and has the hardest life" which is upsetting because it was the only thing that made them feel valid. It was definitely triggering because it was expected to struggle once you entered the group. Even now, I believe they're all still friends and they're all around 18 now and from what I've seen/heard they're not helping each other which just makes me sad.. Competition is really destructive and damaging and NEEDS to be talked about.
    Also, with suicide prevention month, I think it's amazing for awareness but I don't like how some people only talk about it in that time period eg by making a post on social media. Suicide is relevant every single day and should be talked about. But this goes for anything else. For example, pride month, people only talk about the difficulties of the LGBTQ+ community in that time period then forget it after that and talk about it less.
    Also, pls make that video on trigger warnings 🥺💘

      When I was under CAMHS DBT as opposed to adult care - as teenagers we were all told not to accept eachother on social media because of the whole “competition” aspect of things, I think especially with EUPD/BPD minded teens we definitely didn’t help one another when we created a group chat to spite the therapists - I think the only thing that can be helpful is sharing positive things during group - or if you’re gonna add eachother in social media, only be positive in conversation because there were a few times where if one person felt suicidal we all immediate became suicidal and couldn’t help eachother out of the situation...
      It’s so sad and difficult.

    • @martyna1961
      @martyna1961 4 года назад

      @@illeatthat I completely understand and sometimes people do have good intentions.. But the illness takes over and you become negative and competitive. I think parents, teachers etc need to be educated on this topic and taught how to address it. What staff did was actually a good idea and people shouldn't assume that competition is attention seeking or a "phase" and it's very serious.

      i had a friend like that too she would always try and ask when i last sh and try to be like, oh i self harmed more than you so you aren’t doing it good enough. and things like that and always made it a competition and would get mad when i wouldn’t show her or let her see. and also what didn’t help is that she would always make the excuse that she was the one who went to the psych hospital and she was the one who’s parents knew about her problems and that she was diagnosed and would even self harm in front of me and told me to watch. like she didn’t understand that my problems probably aren’t just depression and anxiety and are way different and she would always put me down. i’m glad we’re not friends anymore and i really do understand how you feel

      @@notc0mmonpeopl3 Gosh.. I am so sorry you had someone like that in your life.. I'm glad you're not friends anymore. I hope that person got the help but I'm happy that you don't have to deal with that anymore. I hope you're in a better place, too! 🙂

    i see a lot of people in the comments saying about the rolling up the sleeves thing & being embarrassed by it, but just known there is a HUGE difference between attention seeking and SUPPORT seeking. never ever feel like you’re wanting attention in a negative way, it’s only natural that when we struggle we desire to be supported, regardless of what that looks like for you. i know when my self harm was still a secret, so much of me wanted it to stay that way but there was always a part of me which wanted someone to notice. to notice for support- not attention, i hope this helps any of you rationalise those feelings

  • @jayasharma1776

    i think legislation for safeguarding must have changed because when my teachers found out about self harm they immediately called my parents. And I honestly commend you for being honest about wanting your teacher to see and rolling up your sleeve because I did this too and while I find this embarrassing I know that needing attention isnt necessarily a bad thing and I'm grateful that you were open about that experience xx

  • @alicia1077

    When you said about the teacher noticing with SH, I can relate so much. I got really anxious watching because I got a flashback from when I was in school and I finally reached out and I was in the office with my head of year (who was amazing!) and other pastoral care (who was also my ICT teacher) and I said about my anxiety/depression/trauma/insomnia etc and my ICT turned round and said “yeah I noticed the plaster in class, you didn’t hide it from me that well” and I just felt so on edge and not judged but judged ya know.
    And I remember thinking then why didn’t you ask ? Why didn’t you keep me behind and check in?? I just wanted someone to notice and help me because I wasn’t getting help at CAHMS or home cause I didn’t feel comfy telling the parents. Schools have such a long way to go.
    (In regards to competing) Another time was a few days after I turned 18 (so I wouldn’t have to tell my parents and nor could the school) and I had SH’d and I finally told my head of year again after the first time I told her. And she asked to see it (but it was already a week old & wasn’t that bad) so having to say to her “please take this serious, it’s normally worse but this is older and healed” made me compete with myself almost. Like after that I was determined to SH worse just to prove to myself and her that I was depressed. Like I hate the fact that you get to the point where you feel kind you have to prove your depression. She never made me feel judged and was acc really understanding, but having the bad mentality of competing with yourself is so draining
    Thank you marie for this video. Very eye opening and I’m glad that someone else had gone through the same as me. And it makes myself and others feel less alone.

    Safeguarding in schools and colleges has definitely changed since I was at school. I work in a sixth form college now as a science tech and there's a whole process that everyone in the college has to be trained in. Mental health is taken very seriously now, and obviously so is sh, which is really good. I didn't start self harming until I was 18 so I never dealt with school/college finding out so I don't know what the process was back then but from what I've heard it wasn't great. Great video as always, Marie 💛

    I can relate to not wanting anyone to know about self harm so much. I was so ashamed in school and I still am because of the scars and I'm 28 now. There is nothing attention seeking about it, and if you show it and hope to be helped by this person in any way it has nothing to to with wanting attention but with needing someone to see you and be there for you, helping you through very hard times. I also don't get why doctors treat you like it was your conscious and free decision to cut yourself because nobody would ever do this without serious mental illness and out of will. I even had a doctor in the ER refusing to do anesthesia for stitching and told me "You wanted to feel yourself, there you go." which is nothing but barbaric and led to more medical trauma and me nearly dying because of an infection a year later because I was too afraid to tell anyone. Education really needs to happen in the medical field, in schools and everywhere around to raise awareness about how big the inner pain has to be to be able to do something like needing self harm to cope with it. I myself can't relate to how desperate I had to be in this period of my life to hurt myself in these extreme ways over and over again, so I don't expect anyone else to fully understand, but being more empathic and validating with each other would be a good start.

    I struggle with being triggered by before and after ED pictures very often because my eating disorder is very competitive. It really does depend on the message brought with it (it can be very inspiring!) because sometimes people do actually have an underlying motive of recieving attention and praise. I especially struggle with people posting before and after photo's while still being only barely healthy and still too skinny in the after photo. My body is naturally heavier and curvy and I struggled immensely with people pretending to be healthy while still being as skinny as possible.

    hi. i haven’t finished watching the video but would just like to share my experience with sh in school. TW. so i currently struggle with sh and i’m in my last year so secondary school. i told two of my friends by just showing them my arm (this was the day after the very first time i did it) we then went down stairs just to sit and speak to our favourite teacher to take my mind off it hit behind my back one of my friends told her. i was lasted that day called into my guidance teachers office as my teacher had to tell her. we had a good discussion about it and everything going on. at the time i was freaking out as i didn’t know all who knew. turns out my friend ended up also telling one of her others friends which rly annoyed me as i trusted her and i wanted to tell people and teachers when i was ready. to this day all the teachers who know are extremely supportive and very understanding. another thing i would like to add is as i was over 16 they didn’t tell my parents as i didn’t want them too. i have just recently called my gp and i have been referred to CAMHS. i just wanted to let you know as some people will find telling their school scary as they might tell their parents or they might not understand. but if you find the right teacher or friend to tell it will rly help you xx stay strong you’ve got this

    Suicide prevention month is honestly so important. Last year my school lost an exchange student in my year to suicide before Christmas (he was also in my form group and in a class with me) and I felt like the school never talked about prevention until it was way too late. They were amazing after the fact but I feel like schools should have more easily accessed support for those with mental illness especially if they are suicidal. I know my school it is still quite hard to get the support. To get the support you need to talk to certain teachers and then teachers can be quite judgey.

    Also, definitely feel that before and after photos that focus on how you’re feeling seem like a much better idea. Seeing a spark back in someone’s face when things are looking brighter for them and things don’t feel so dark - I want that for everyone.
    Self harm is so difficult. I never went to a school (homeschooled) so I don’t know what it’s like dealing with that stuff at school. But I really hope that, just generally, people will be more and more educated and shown by their parents or teachers or whoever, better ways to be. So that any kind of mean words or anything will be less the way to go? Probably too optimistic, I don’t know.
    I love love love what you’ve said about sharing your story but not sharing graphic stuff. Being able to share all the nitty gritty details and be seen and heard and accepted with that is important - but is better done in therapy or with someone you trust who is ok to hear all of that. But for sharing your story to spread awareness, let people know they’re not alone, as part of awareness campaigns - I think it’s definitely better to stay away from specific graphic details that don’t need to be there. And could give another person ideas.
    These are only my thoughts. I am always willing to hear different ideas, new information, and learn.
    Hang in there everyone.

    Story time.
    It’s the middle of 2020. My collegiate choir has not seen each other since March. We all jump on a zoom call to discuss the fall. I’m at the large computer in our kitchen, on mute. My mom is in the back doing kitchen things, listening in. While waiting for everyone to get on the call, we’re sharing things we’ve done over the past few months.
    Our director says he started going on walks every day and has lost 20 lbs. He hadn’t been particularly overweight (by appearances), but he clearly felt better than he had before-after all, walking is good for you. We were all voicing our congratulations because that’s awesome, good for him…and then _that_ girl goes ‘just want to remind you that you can’t talk about that stuff because it might be offensive’ and my mom from behind me (I’m still muted) goes ‘WHAT?! She did _not_ just say that, are you kidding me? That’s so rude!’

    on the topic of sh in school, i can think of over 10 girls in my year that self harmed (and thats just what i knew of). i really belive that for the most part teachers do care a lot, they just dont have the training or resources to help in the right way or know what to do.,

  • @imid3440
    @imid3440 3 года назад

    so, I approached my teacher about my mh & the teacher asked if I self-harmed & I said no (because i wasn’t) and she said I was fine then. So invalidating & I ended up sh’ing and definitely ‘accidentally’ rolled up my sleeves a few times to reach out. I wish I could hug my younger self & tell her that she deserved help & didn’t need to start hurting herself to get it.

    I told some who was in most of my classes I stopped eating for a day in year 11 and she went and told a teacher who spoke to my head of year who made me eat and checked on my account that I had.
    Also in year 11 I self harmed didnt know anyone else who did dont even know how I knew about it but I showed someone in my maths class and she said did I want to go talk to my head of year I said no. But part of me wanted to hide it from my teacher, but part of me wanted to show her. She was sat opposite me going through a past paper with me and you could kind of see it under my blazer and jumper but she either didnt see or I hid it.

    I left school over 15 years ago (yes I'm old) and as far a i knew i was the only person who self harmed and the school delt with it really badly to the extend that i said if they told my parents i would commit suicide (i know that was wrong to say but i was desperate and scared), but it did stopped them telling them. I know its really hard to reach out but if you do self harm then telling your parents isn't going to be a bad thing you should see it as the start of your recovery. Please reach out as things do get better. oh SOMETHING!!! :)

    SOMETHING!! OBVS!!! Also you say self harm is just the surface of a much deeper problem. But then also talk about self harming because your friend does, where there doesn't seem to be a deeper issue? This isn't even critisism at all I'm just wondering do you think there are some cases were self harm isnt the surface of a deeper problem? I've always been terrified my reasons for self harming werent valid or were in some way wrong. LOVE YOU ALWAYS ♥️

    About the SH in school thing, it’s totally mad like I haven’t been in school for 5 years but when I was in year 11 looking back there was at least 7 people in my year that I knew of that SH’ed. Absolutely mad that there was that many.

  • @CalliopeFlowerFarm
    @CalliopeFlowerFarm 4 года назад

    I think people find out about SH from their friends often (I did) and people who don't know about the complex reasons behind it want a simple reason why, so they say the person is doing it "because" of their friends
