Now that you've seen my choice, what is yours? Remember that a white dial 5726A and several Sky-Dweller colors exist.

I have well and truly done the so called U bend for a watch enthusiast.... Many years ago I would of known of Rolex of course as everyone does, then as you get into watches you become a bit of a snob, "oh they are not haute horology"...."Many are above them" etc etc so you dip to the lower part of the U, but you can't help but appreciate them, then you realise they really are amazing time pieces and you start going back up that U shaped curve. I have been at the top for years now and appreciate them even more with my first Rolex which I recently got. I am not a one track Rolex enthusiast now but I do sort of have a thing for them. I love the Nautilus here obviously but for me the Rolex, their robustness and the Sky Dweller even has a sort of dated charm, it is quirky, it offers more for me. Great review as usual.

The robustness and practicality of the SS Sky D wins every time for me, no matter how much I obsess for the PP 5726. As a set and forget piece of equipment, not much comes close to the Sky D and that’s where my choice lies.

I have been looking for that "one" watch that meets all of my time and travel needs. This means it needs to have time, day, date, month, and time zone variation indicator. The Sky-Dweller is missing the "day" and the Patek is missing the time-zone variation. Both watches have exceptional reliability, accuracy, and style. The Sky-Dweller (SD) does have the advantage of significantly lower cost, but all others like quality, accuracy, and possibly durability are comparable for both watches.
In terms of beauty and cratsmanship. I would give an edge to Patek, but also, I would think it is fairer to compare against the bracelet Patek model, which also costs more than the leather.
For usability, the 72-hour power reserve of SD almost guarantees continuous running without having to open the crown to wind the watch vs. 35-45-hour power reserve of Patek. Also, when you do lengthy travels for business, you don't want to lug around a watch winder with you if you can avoid it, at least I don't find that practical.
Another key point "for me" is accuracy. Over a year, watch being off by 5 min vs. 15 min to me is a big deal. Setting both watches against the world clock and measured the difference after 5 full days. The delta in time measurements found in the SD was 0.75sec per day, whereas the Patek had 3.x sec per day (they were both placed on a 900 TPD Wolf watch winder). Translates to ~17.8 min of for Patek to ~4.5 min for SD for annual reset (Feb/March). When you are not needing to set the date except for once a year (Feb/March transition), it is nice knowing that time is close to real-time. I don't like to open the crown to reset the time or date if it can be avoided.
Now let's talk about the aesthetic of both watches. I think much of this is personal preference and taste. The Rolex is a much more of a presence with a 42mm vs. Patek's 40mm and slimmer design. Having a slimmer design I would think would appeal to more people who wear watches in business settings, or even business casual setting. I guess it also depends on your size and I can see how Patek may feel small to larger men. But the Rolex almost feels identical to my father Rolex Date-Just from the 1960s. Back then, the lugs were much thicker, and it feels great wearing it. He still wears it today, and I think it is the only watch he has ever worn on a daily basis. I also know he had the crystal face replaced as it did crack one time about 30 years ago, but since then, I don't think he has ever had it serviced, and it still keeps incredibly accurate time. His watch is silver with white gold bezel, jubilee with a light silver face. Both are timeless masterpiece watches in design. Nautilus has been around for decades, and the Date-Just has also been around for decades.
While there is no right answer to which is the preferred watch, it all comes down to personal preference, taste, and importance. At least for me, I am going the way of Sky-Dweller for two reasons. One, it is less than 1/3 the cost (for two-tone Champagne dial) over Patek's SS model. Second, it has a GMT function which adds significant value to me as I also frequently travel to multiple time zones. But I would say, the Patek complication with SS bracelet is something I would not turn away (if money was no object), as for the leather band, I would have to pass.

There is NO comparison here if you consider price. If you do consider price I still prefer the Sky Dweller because it is more robust, reliable piece and it won't show scratches or dings nearly as much (Nautilus bezel is a scratch magnet....I know because I own both a Nautlius and a blue Sky Dweller with Jubilee). Rolex is far easier and less expensive to service and it's less likely to need service too. But PP is a "finer" piece of course yes but I'd rather wear a pair of black dress jeans than an Armani suit most of the time and for most of what I do it's far more appropriate. I mean do I really care how much the movement is "finished" if it does what its supposed to do and I'm not looking at it anyway? Rolex is king of recognition, resale, and reliability for a reason. They know what they are doing over there.

However, I was delighted by your choice because at the end of the day what makes watches so amazing is the personal reasons that guide our selections. The blue Sky Dweller for me today. Tomorrow? Very well said. Luxury watches are very personal purchases that are driven by emotion and individual experience. Since we don't "need" them in the essential sense, we gravitate towards watches that speak to our personal values, experience, and preferences. The qualities of a watch often reflect specific personality traits of the owner.

I own both and love both. I just got my 5726 and the price is now $40,940 whereas my blue Sky-Dweller, which I got this Summer, is still priced at $14,400. Either way, both are worth more than I paid. That said, I have no plans to sell either one of them. Just comforting to know. I also own Daytonas, GMTs, dive watches, etc. Paid retail for all of them. I love them all for different reasons.

Very tight competition. My value and mindset makes it very hard to think of the Patek as a daily wear watch- its just to historical, a human work of art and craftsmanship at the highest horological level. To valuable to abuse it doesn't have a place in my general lifestyle but if I could have either of them the Patek would be my choice. Very nicely done Tim - much fun - thanks.

Okay so I had to watch this video twice to make up my mind. I think spending all day at F1 clouded my judgement. I so want to prefer the nautilus so much that I think it caused me to make excuses for it falling behind. After a good night's sleep, I prefer the Sky dweller. The Sky dweller is rapidly becoming one of my favorite watches out there - and I used to pride myself on not jumping on the rolex band wagon. The design of the ring bezel system is amazing, ingenius and well thought out. The month indicator is simply genius in its subtlety. And it also has the 24 hour GMT indicator with an independent hour hand. While the Patek is iconic and beautiful, it is not enough for me. I don't like how the date window cuts into the date at 6 o' clock. If I could ever afford a nautilus, it wouldn't be this one, it would be the chronograph. Yes the finishing on the Patek is amazing but I don't think it can take this above the Sky Dweller. Sky Dweller wins this pulling away for me.

The Patek cal-324 Annual has more parts and is more complex than their 240Q-based perpetuals! It is also just as difficult to set and requires a tool to set it. Not to mention required setting at specific times and the consequences of desynchronization. The Rolex can be set in a fraction of the time at any time and in any direction, whilst needing a fraction of the parts and no chance on damaging it. If you're not into Rolex, consider the just released Laurent Ferrier Annual, which is just as innovative as the Rolex and built to Patek's standards.

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  5 лет назад +1

From an engineering and user standpoint, the Rolex owns this comparison. Patek's only advantage from a usage perspective is the complete display of day, date, and month that makes precise reading of the calendar quicker than the abbreviated calendar display of the Rolex.

I like the Skydweller as it’s the only Rolex, as far as I know, in which the hour hand can be independently set without a third GMT hand cluttering the dial.
The Patek looks to me like a work of art to be protected rather than used. Wearing it would make me as nervous about damaging it as transporting a Monet in the trunk of my car.

Great versus Tim, I love the sky dweller with its cool complications, and awesome look. But I have to say the Patek has something that the Rolex doesn't have, and that's the human finish and Touch on the watch, which makes me lean towards the Patek more. But looking at their price, the Rolex seems like the bargain of the century.

    • @the1916companywatchreviews

Thanks for this feedback, Abdul. Certainly, the Patek has the allure of an artisanal product whereas the Rolex is a refined industrial product. Pricing was a minor factor in my choice, but I'm also not a Patek -- or Rolex -- purist. Given the choice between the two at an identical price, I might choose the Rolex again.

Owning both, I'd have to say the Patek. Every surface has its own personality and the way they all play with the light is special. I like the sky dweller. I see it as the bigger brother of the Day date . The more better equipped grown up option. Don’t get me wrong the day date is obviously cool but the sky dweller has more horse power. I absolutely LOVE the complication and the way Rolex designed it. How everything gets done by clicking the bezel. It’s simply genius. No one else does it. So I believe it’s proprietary.

  • @highnrising

The Rolex is just a better watch. Better movement--power reserve, hacking, etc. And the graphical month display on the Rolex gives you a visual cue as to what fraction of the year has elapsed, as it makes one complete rotation of the dial over the course of the full year. That's more elegant and interesting than the window display with abbreviated language on the PP. If I could have either watch for the same price (but couldn't sell it at a profit) , I'd take the Rolex.

The two watches are incomparably comparable. i cant say whether i prefer my left chamber or right chamber of my heart. both watches have decades of tradition that weigh upon the mind. the unmistakable image of rolex and the unusual but pleasing image of the nautilus . one can see these two watches by a merging of the image in the minds eye and the watch that one actually sees. both horological masterpieces. both meant for different moods. like the sun and the moon . I, a humble mortal refuse to compare them but rather revel in them. each watch has its own elegance, comfortable only in its own place and time . possibly the nautilus is more of a dress watch as the sky more of a travel watch. appears that the sky is technologically more efficient and the patek has its complications and own sense of refinement. each watch holds its value so i assume it is a reflection of their quality and not just brand value or inflated image so worthy of the investment also. both labours of love and artistry. each striking in their own fashion and context. the sky shines and the nautilus has its lustre. so who wins for me neither as i desire both.

I'm certain that Rolex chose this format in the interests of offering a more complete GMT display. This is the kind of calendar that you would expect on something like an Ochs und Junior rather than Rolex, but it does succeed in opening the dial for the second time zone. Patek's system is more complete as a calendar, but it only allows a moon phase as a secondary rather than Rolex's dual time.

so instead of implementing somehow the useful complciation - day of the weak they chose to make the watch very complicated in the movement which needs to be adjusted just once a year ... and all of this for what ? for telling the time reader which month it is ... as if he doesnt know ??? like is this July or february. and then lets be honest they could of put the day at the ten ocklock or move the date to 4 and have the day at 2 ... that would still allow the watch to be useful in practical terms and not take away the same ... i mean think about it - the watch knows the day of the weak but doesnt show it ... so its basically a perpetual for one year but then it only shows the month and the date ... random dont u find ?

The idea behind those data tables always was that people with the interest would be able to pause them for complete details. My goal is to not overload these videos with statistics for the broader audience that has only passing interest in anything besides how the watch looks and wears. I do regret that it moves fast, but the data portion of the video is designed to make that info available to enthusiasts without alienating the mainstream audience.

Sky Dweller for me...... no offence but I felt PP seriously over priced with not much update for the longest time. Even if I can afford it I don't think I will dump $40k on a watch. Rolex will have my vote......

This Patek's movement is a dinosaur , makes patek looks lazy and not innovative, the only advantage it has here is the finishing. Dollar for dollar i'll take the rolex all day.

With the exception of the circa-2000s investment in the silicon hairspring technology, all of the added value in the Patek's caliber is attributable to the hand finishing. On the Rolex side, all of the added value is the technology and engineering. Truly, the contrast forces you to pick what you value most, and both of us believe that the functions and toughness of the Rolex are preferable to Patek's beautiful anachronism.

Maybe the Rolex looks nicer and much more impressive but I would prefer a Patek. It's more practical than a gaudy chunk of metal on the wrist. But there's no accounting for taste. I'm just kidding: Rolex looks nice. Some like Rolex styling more. I also don't like the inscription 'superlative chronometer'. Patek is probably more precise and has no such gaudy inscriptions. Just the word "chronometer" would have sufficed. The Rolex chronometer is no better than any other chronometer contrary to all the hype! The same holds for Patek. The only difference is all Pateks are very precise, even more precise than a chronometer should be. So Patek deserves some kudos for performance. Don't get me wrong. Rolexes are very good watches, ones of the best. Just don't like the design and all the hype. You can't go wrong with a Rolex though as the workmanship and sturdiness are simply superb. With all the praises, I'm still gonna say: These are all just vanity watches :)))

Patek fixes it all with little bells and moon phases. Nonsense to show off at a ballroom party. Rolex manufactures Watches ranging from the Mariana Trench to Everest. If you take a Patek to these places the needles will jump. In terms of value for money, Rolex is infinitely superior. Rolex is like a Porsche ... It evolves and the design never changes. For me the best watch in the world.
