One of my favourite parts of the series is when scott is surprised when Stephen shows up with his boyfriend. It’s revealed that in the background of the previous book Stephen had already told everyone but Scott and by extension us the reader had been too busy thinking about himself to care about others around him.

Ramona had to learn to stop cutting people out of her life and grow as a person.

It’s not afraid to tell a story of two messed up people who hurt others romantically but are relatable and they learn and grow by facing what bit them back. Scott Pilgrim is all about relationships of any kind and how they are dealt. Toxic ones, taboo ones, gay ones, ect. From what I’ve seen we never really had that in the mainstream. Taught me valuable lessons about how relationships are. And it has more to offer, the music, the aesthetic and humor all are just as important. I love the book and movie sm. It helped with trauma and lessons as I’ve been a Scott and I’ve been a Kim. I can relate to both.

It’s one of the best stories ever told in comics. By trying to explain it all, you do oversimplify it. It’s a very honest, funny, and powerful series that many people miss the point of- either in thinking it’s just about how video games are cool, or thinking it’s about how toxic male behavior is cool. Neither are close to true. It should be clear to anyone reading it how it’s about a person in their twenties trying to mature taking an honest look at themselves and their friends and finding forgiveness through facing reality and the past.

The movie was my first experience with this, and honestly the way Kim always seems to look at Scott with almost pain... Up until he admits "I treated you like shit and you deserved better" and she smiles, it really feels like actual growth. Liked. Genuine growth on Scott's part. Kim wasn't a recent thing. He hurt her years ago. So his apology feels GENUINE, not opportunistic.
Also, i like how the movie just... Avoids the nega Scott encounter, which, again, shows he's grown. He doesn't need to fight him. They talk it over and even decide to get brunch together. He solved the conflict purely by talking it out like an adult.

I'm really glad the film didn't go with the alternate ending where Scott and Knives end up together. Since the show came out I decided to read the comic to understand the source material before seeing the show. I went into this completely blind. I knew nothing about it besides the basic premise. I didn’t like volume 1. I found it really hard to route for Scott with his actions and I was pretty confused as to if the author wanted me to rout for him or not. But over the course of my reading I grew to love this series with each volume. It kept me guessing on where the plot was going and the climax of the 6th volume had me screaming and cheering on the inside which is something I haven’t felt since reading one punch man. The characters feel so real and as it progressed I grew attached to them even Scott who despite his many flaws I saw myself in since I’m also a huge nerd that has the brain capacity of a grape. But I think a character that I think was handled probably the best was knives. I really saw myself in her. Much like her I was cheated on. It was also my first relationship. A lot of the emotions that knives felt are things that I felt. The obsession of trying to get back with Scott, the hatred she had for Ramona, and finally the acceptance and forgiveness were all things that I went through fairly recently. I didn’t expect for her character to be handled in such a realistic way while still keeping it exaggerated like the rest of comic. I truly loved this series and I think I’m gonna watch the movie as well as the show. I even went ahead and bought the video game so I’ll be playing that soon.

I’ve had a hard time going back to the film after the comic ending was released. Reframing Gideon as Romona’s problem that Scott can help her with really completes the themes of breaking Scott out of his self centered world view. It’s really hard to go back to a film that has far more of a “win the girl” message to the very end, though I suspect O’Malley wouldn’t have gotten there without writing the film ending first. You can definitely see the ideas in the film, but the comic is where they truly land.

I saw a lot of myself in Scott, I still do. The ultimate message of Scott Pilgrim being that Scott does suck but he doesn't have to is kinda what makes the book and film great, and the anime capitalizes on that narrative. I really like how brian said its made for people in their 20's and he wanted to finish it before he turns 30. I saw the movie in 2010 from renting it from the library when I was 15/16. I watched that movie regilously, to the point when I can say it line for line. But I didn't read the comic until 2018 with its first volume in color, bought the rest in color in 2019, read up to volume 3, and finished it in one setting during the pandemic in 2020. Also got the game a couple years ago through "limited run" collectors edition. Still haven't played it yet, but I have heard the soundtrack. Lol
Yeah I love video games and I found the movie just before getting into anime a few months later. All of that is appreciated. For me, especially with the comic, I feel like scott pilgrim is just about figuring it out. No matter where your at in life, what you have done or plan on doing relationship or life wise, its okay and you'll figure it out eventually. Even if you gotta go through ex's to do it. Lol c:
By the way, drake, you telling us all that was a good way to loop back around the series. You showed that this isn't fiction(taking out the shounen/game aspects). People are and can turn out like scott or anyone in the series. Like it or not, this is real for some people. But as I said, you'll figure it out. And you did drake. Happy for ya. c:

Scott Pilgrim came to me in a very difficult time in my life, full of depression, complicated relationships, splintering friendgroups - my mid 20s, and tbh I still don't think I recovered from that. Scott Pilgrim gave me... a reality to be, in lack of better words, in a way that i never quite could put into words, but you very brilliantly managed to do. So thank you for this video. I think I should reread Scott Pilgrim, now that I'm older and that my life has changed quite a bit.
    Happy 30th birthday!

I finally have reread Scott Pilgrim for the first time since the movie was released, and finally in color. It surprised me how much more there is in the book. I had interviewed Bryan right as the movie was optioned and it's really interesting to come back to this so many years later. And then the anime series comes back at this with even newer eyes.

God damn dude. This is the best thing you've ever done. I was far worse. I lost someone not in a break up but completely gone from this world and being the shittiest human ever looking to fill the big gaping hole I jumped from relationship to relationship disrespecting my loves memory and disrespecting those women by being completely unable to love anyone else.
Finally I had to remove my self completely from any dating market not even allowing myself to be alone with a woman from a couple of years to grieve in a more healthy way.
I want to watch Scott Pilgrim tonight.

I can't believe I don't remember if I read the comic because of Edgar Wright talking about doing the movie, or if I got excited hearing Edgar Wright was going to do the movie because I was already into the comics... needless to say I saw the movie in the theaters at least 3 times. (And I had already read the comics, so I had all that awkwardness of knowing what was cut from the movie and what stayed)

I completely understand your perspective on Scott Pilgrim (as a graphic novel), I'm 32 and started reading the books in 2010 when I was 18/19 and bought an electric bass (I now have two and I'm more proficient with them). But I was recently talking to one of my best friends about the animated series and how that plot twist makes it similar to narratives like Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty or Neon Genesis Evangelion (no spoilers in case no one here has seen it), and how it expands the whole story around this 23 year old Canadian slacker. I look forward to a review of the series.

for me scott pilgrim is nostalgic. My dad read the books and watched the movie. Some times when he would watch his downloaded movies I always remember the times he watched the movie. I grew to love it without ever knowing it, and at some point I found out he had the game. I would always play it to try and beat it. Doing it alone however, I never got past todd or survive long enough in the 4th level to see who was next. Recently watched the animated show, loved it and after years I finally watched the movie all the way through. I can't wait to read the books myself hehe.

Damn, this one's getting me misty-eyed. Excellent video, as always, Drake. Scott Pilgrim is a lesson many people should learn from.
I watched Scott Pilgrim at a time in my life when I was, for the first time ever, part of a nerdy group of friends who had their own interconnected web of relationships. They weren't exactly like the Scott Pilgrim characters but it was there. And with how good the movie was, I bought volume 1 of the comic series. The experience of Scott Pilgrim is tied to an incredibly sociable and nerdy time in my life and I will always cherish that. I miss those days. Can't believe it's been like 10 years already

I remembered watching your videos many years back when I was a kid from when you were on GT, and then randomly saw you come up in the comments for a verge tiktok about electric shoes and figured I'd take a look at your content again. You're still making great stuff and I can't even remember why I might have stopped watching, so you've re-earned a subscriber! (After writing most everything else in the comment I realized I'm still subscribed to TrailerDrake, so I guess I just never moved over here, whoops!)
I found this video really interesting. I recently read the comics for the first time so this was an appropriate video for me. Personally when I read it, I just didn't get it. I found the comic itself really cool and funny, I loved the visuals, and I very much enjoyed reading it, but I didn't really get the social sticking power. Even being in my early-mid 20's like Scott, I'm someone who's really never been active in larger friend circles or been a prolific romantic, so it's somewhat difficult for me to put myself into the shoes of the cast. I think because my background is so much different from the life Scott was living, it was hard for me to humanize the characters overall, and as a result a lot of it just felt really tropey to me.
The comic is never shy to remind us that Scott is a loser and a bad guy, and it loves to outright portray him as being bad, but it felt to me like it also never punished him too much for being bad, and any punishments he does get just felt brushed aside immediately. He has his emotional lows over the course of the story, but to my read, he just kinda drifted through and didn't face many tangible consequences for his actions. Everyone around him actively lives their lives, but life just happens *to* Scott in a way that leads to much of his growth, and I suppose that's the point to some degree. In the end, though, he still gets to be the hero and get the girl and "win" at life in a way that appeals to some kind of nerdy social power fantasy (with a nebulous caveat of the couple needing to work on things), and that kinda rubbed me in a weird way, I guess. I don't think the story needed a super sad ending, I don't feel like Scott didn't grow, but it felt a little too emotionally straightforward to me, if I had to describe it somehow.
All that being said, I really appreciated your perspective, especially given how much you were able to relate to the story personally, and now I can better see why people like the comic so much. It's kind of funny, I could see the flaws in Scott, but just as you talk about poor media literacy in the beginning, I think I also fell victim to not looking at the story closely or deeply enough in the places that matter (just like Scott). When I read it, I just breezed through and focused too much on the narrative that was being presented to the reader and not enough on the internal driving conflicts going on within the supporting characters. There's those moments when Scott just fucks off out of people's lives and then suddenly when we see them again they're in a totally different state, and it's not like I didn't take note of that (in fact, I thought it was really cool and it just built further into how Scott treats his friends), but I should have taken it as a wakeup call for me as a reader too. I also probably was just reading through too fast to process the emotional aspects of what Scott was going through and then I filled in with my preconceptions about his character, so maybe it'd have hit harder if I were waiting a year between volumes instead of bingeing them all in a short timespan. One other thing that my friends pointed out to me when I read it was that the comic was very much a product of its time. It has extreme 00's vibes and was one of the first big things to tackle these concepts in this way, so maybe some of the failings it had with me were just due to overexposure with media/tropes that derived from or built off the foundation that was established here. After watching this video I definitely plan to revisit the comics sometime down the line, probably after I watch the anime and rewatch the movie. I can definitely see this being one of those pieces of media that grows alongside you, and even if I feel like I'm already in a much different place from Scott emotionally, who knows where I might be when I look back on it.
Thanks for making this vid, it really rocked, even if we disagree about the potential utility of silly automatic shoes.

the thing about scott is that although he does obviously suck, hes also human, learning from his mistakes and becoming a better person because of it. i love this series so much because the message that you arent defined by the mistakes of your past is such an important thing to learn as you mature and enter adulthood. its a beautiful story that really humanizes all the characters in ways that so many properties arent able to hit quite like scott pilgrim does.
plus, to get people to root for a scummy guy like scott to get his act together instead of just rooting for his downfall, i feel like thats also a testament to the novel's writing lol. SP will always be one of my favorite stories and im so glad that the anime is receiving so much love

I was only 8 years old by the time the last comic came out and yet having only read it in the past couple weeks in wake of the anime it feels like I’d been missing out on something incredible for all these years.
I’m only 21 now, but I’ve already had my fair share of fuck ups with people in my past (no romantic partners, but with friends and family for sure) and the worst part is that I’m always worried that I’m not gonna be able to improve myself. I want to think that I am, but there’s so much that I’m still seemingly oblivious towards in my life. But seeing how people do improve with time and how slow it can take in this series is giving me hope that I won’t mess things up as much in the future.
