    10:47 they hadn't died in the comics. The author explained in an interview that, after being defeated, the exes respawned at their homes, having learned their lesson, and that they don't go after Scott afterwards because they all live in the U.S. and "going to Toronto is such a hassle"; an explanation that IS canon to this show as future Scott repeats this same information and is friends with the twins.
    On a side note, the twins got shafted character wise for another adaptation

      This reminds me of how the comic actually had a _checkpoint_ appear to Scott at some point, implying that if he'd managed to nab it (which he wasn't able to in time) he'd have just respawned _there_ after Gideon killed him rather than all the way at home. Perhaps the Exes saw checkpoints of their own before their battles with Scott and just didn't bother using them (either due to overconfidence or, like Scott, not knowing what they were looking at)? 🤔

      As someone who is going through the passport process currently to go from USA to Toronto, can confirm: definitely a hassle. Especially if it’s not a necessity.

      @@riakun yeah, even in the comics most of the exes only went to Toronto on occasion if they had another business going on (Lee filming a movie, Todd had a concert, the twins were invited to a party, Gideon hosted an event). Only Matthew and Roxie went there SPECIFICALLY to kick Scott's ass (and even Roxie had a secondary goal of rekindling her relationship)

      @@NationalistsRuinAmerica I feel like there's season 2 potential. The plot twist was a neat move but Scott gets robbed of a lot of his personal growth. Lisa's lingering feelings would still be a thing. Kim's lack of closure is probably still a thing, and she just lost her job so she might still move away. Most importantly Stephen Still's needs an episode to realize he's Gay. There's a lot more they could work with.

    • @NationalistsRuinAmerica
      @NationalistsRuinAmerica 9 месяцев назад +7

      @@dartagnanjames8069 Yeah, all that, and the premise itself is so rushed and broken. The anime gave us a Volume 6 style finale but without any of the buildup. The whole point of The Scott Pilgrim Comic was seeing two young adults freeing each other from their vicious circles of heartbreak and denial, and growing as a couple.
      Ramona did all the personal growth of like 5000 pages of comics in 8 episodes of anime. Neither did Scott get his portion of personal growth Nor was he present when Ramona improved as a person. What motivates these two to even be together? They didn't go through months of hardship together, they JUST MET.
      They should've just adapted the comic 1:1. It has the best of both the anime and the movie, it's literally the perfect way to tell the story.

    one detail i absolutely adored was the hair dying scenes at the start of most episodes. it really does a good job of signifying that, yes, this is ramona's story, and while in the other adaptations her hair would just inexplicably change color and you just have to deal with it, here we're taken through EVERY color change, step by step, as we're following ramona this time.

    • @Sceo_
      @Sceo_ 9 месяцев назад +101

      **SPOILER AHEAD**
      And some hair colors even made sense with the storyline. E.g. the ones after Scott's "death" had a darker color. After she discovers that he is, in fact, alive, the colors start to get brighter, as if she had reborn inside. Brilliant.

    • @RealGrogster

      Just a complement: in the last scene we see Ramona dyeing her hair "white", the brightest color of all and, for the first time in the series, we see her actually happy (thus, bright), and right after she leaves with her new friends and boyfriend, Scott. Basically, she feels happy for the first time after he left. Isn't it a brilliancy or not?

      That's my real hope... the main thing that currently holds the show back for me right now, is that the books do such a good job of illustrating how BOTH Scott AND Ramona basically 'earn' one another by growing up and deciding their relationship was worth sacrificing their own selfish 'comfort' problems for. The movie still does this for Scott, and this show still does that for Ramona, but thus far ONLY the book does it for both.

      I think they were going for "he likes Scott but keeps that to himself after he dies" as an angle and it just fell a little flat. His whole relationship with Todd started because Todd was dressed as Scott, and there's lots of ship tease between the two. (Such as Scott being Wallace's sugar baby, or the scene where they almost implied that Older Scott and Older Wallace were married before faking it out with a "his husband works at Nintendo" joke.)
      Scott/Wallace ship tease has always been a running subtextual joke in the series, but it's also just straight up implied that Wallace has a crush on Scott. In the comics we see their first meeting, and it's a 1:1 match of Scott's meeting with Lisa, his first love interest, as they both show up at his house and say the exact same lines. But the series never goes into it, and so it's always left Wallace feeling a little shallow in every iteration.

    The biggest thing that i like about the show is how it made Ramona confront her exes rather than let Scott do that with violence. They all have flaws but the exes stayed bitter because they lost communication with Ramona who keeps running away but when they finally got that chance, it made Ramona realize that she cant always run way from her problems. This gave so much depth and more character to the exes especially with Roxie and Lucas Lee.

  • @IDKLOL-qj7sl
    @IDKLOL-qj7sl 8 месяцев назад +368

    to me, the Gideon thing made sense because Ramona's flaw isn't "running away" at all. Ramona's flaw is choosing to date people who she thinks are inferior to her.
    whenever Ramona chooses a partner, it's usually someone who is pathetic in some way, and has the potential to be completely obsessed with her. she likes feeling needed. and the problems with this are myriad.
    for exes like Roxy, being treated as inferior is actually really painful. and when Ramona leaves, it feels like she was most afraid of Roxy improving, and realizing that she could do better than Ramona. so Ramona dipped before that could happen, because she's scared of dating an actually good person.
    for exes like Todd or Matthew, Ramona is idolized like she's the best thing that ever happened to them. and that is simultaneously flattering and pressuring. Todd literally punched a hole in the moon for Ramona, which she found horrifying. as soon as these guys got actually irritating, she left. but they were fanatical enough not to let it go.
    but then you get to exes like Gideon, or to some extent, the Katayanagi twins. the twins were both trying to date her because she was younger than them, and they presumed she was inexperienced... so she two-timed them as a sort of power play. it's right in line with Ramona's whole pattern. she loves feeling superior.
    but with Gideon... she found an actual bad person. actually, given his pathetic beginnings, and the way he remains obsessed with her after she leaves, Gideon is kind of the whole package for Ramona. basically, if you go around looking for people to date who are worse than you, sometimes you find an actual bad apple. and no, this doesn't qualify as the hardship of that being "Ramona's fault" or anything... but it is a bit of a wakeup call, that not every idiot that she thinks is pathetic, is actually harmless.
    Ramona's struggle with Scott is to choose someone who has room to improve himself, and actually let him improve. to hope for his improvement, and actually help him along the way. that's how Ramona herself will improve... by making a decision that's good for both of them.

    I really wish they'd just marketed it as what it is... If they have a season 2, they have a chance of still doing what the books did in more depth but better (I.E. the two of them dealing with their stuff together) Alas as it stands, while the show ABSOLUTELY does do what the film fails to do and really delve into Ramona... she does still deal with this stuff in suitable and impactful ways in the books but with a bit less detail than here... but SCOTT goes through NO development and IMO is currently more likely to become 'future scott' than ever.... but that's only an issue if there isn't a season 2 that can better act as a show about the two of them doing what they did in the books... and really earn one another...... and I agree on Gideon completely... I guess we're meant to just assume he's been retconned........ that's a part of my biggest gripe with this show. It's not JUST a reshuffling of the source material predicated on changing a single pivotal event, it's one that sort of rearanges the CHARACTERS involved not just AFTER the event... but BEFORE the event too?
    Here's hoping we get a second season that can better flesh out some of this... like with Scott actually IN the show, he can start going through the growth he missed out on and maybe act as a canvas against which Ramona can work out which of her exes deserve apologies for the way she treated them... and which ones she was just WISELY escaping.

This whole show is built on subversion, and by the time we get to what we think is gonna be the twin's episode, we've kinda fallen into a rhythm built by the initial subversions. So they subvert that expectation knowing we probably won't be expecting the twists to be compounded upon like that. I kinda just want games of the adventures that old Scott went on that eventually led onto what would have been their divorse. Their ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP is the main thing that this series ends up NEVER touching cause it sticks to its roots in being a big anime reference. The movie, comics and series end with them "being together" but then that leaves the people who understand the BASIC CONCEPT that a kiss isn't a fleshed out relationship and that there needs to be actual character moments and reasons for love and personality traits that intertwine and are shown doing just that without immediate halting or punishment for simply being together. The series does everything right for every character except for Scott and Ramona (and knives but im pretty sure they didnt wanna get DOUBLE cancelled. Lets really talk about it) by simply ignoring their relationship AGAIN. Don't get me wrong, it was COMPLETELY in Scott's character to just ignore the past 13 years, forget all about it and what it meant to him and move on, but to not even have an internal moment of reflection on future Ramona's part feels like blatant disrespect to the people who wanted actual depth and reason to WHY they love eachother rather than just cause kiss at the end or pretty gurl meet funni boi. They get into what made them NOT work, but not what actually kept them together for the 13 years in the first place. While more time is given to them in the comics, lets be honest. The comics AND movie *both* end with them basically JUST beginning to seriously date. Nothing is done that isnt halted by an ex or knives and nothing COUNTS until she even knows about knives IMO and you end with essentially what COULD be a good relationship by the end if they just touched on it. But they don't so i want a game. Sorry for the essay

    As a big Scott Pilgrim fan, I do think this show is great, but.... the fact that if we do assume that this future Scott went through the same developments as comic Scotts it does feel like a character regression, as the whole point of Nega Scott gets thrown out the window and it feels like character assassination. It probably isn't the same Scott from the comics tho, since Future Ramona mentions that it was their first big break, even though in the comic she left and they did have a break, which caused Scott to confront himself, so idk. Still a fun series.

    The show may be cool and all, but still, it would have been nice to finally have the comic adaptation everyone wanted from years and years.
    And yes, "the original comic is still there", like Bryan said, but there's nothing wrong in wanting a decently faithful adaptation of something in another medium. Even with the necessary liberties for it to properly translate from a narrative mean to another.
    Unfortunately, with this show existing and O'Malley's "I don't want to do the same story a third time" mindset, at this point it's unlikely to have the proper adaptation of the comic in animated form. At least in the near future.

    I definitely preferred the comics, so it left a sour taste considering the marketing around this. But at the same time I love the Scott Pilgrim world and characters so much that I love them doing new stuff with it. While I much prefer Scott as a protagonist, and more importantly I love the slower pacing of the comics where Scott and Ramona slowly came to terms with themselves and started to work towards being better people. This one is amazing in most regards but that just felt lacking here in how quickly they fell in love and changed here that like the movie felt like a more generic heroes journey. I also have to headcannon that future Scott and Ramona are different from the comic versions because I hate the idea of this being how they turned out, especially with the amazing ambiguity of the original.
    There are a few issues I still have, like the stuff you brought up or nobody caring about Scott dying, but regardless I still really liked this series. I love the focus on the evil exes and how entertaining they are. The humor is great as expected and the movie set stuff was really fun, and fuck the animation and choreogrphy was just phenomenal. The twist honestly made me stop and question literally everything that happened afterwards. I liked it.
    I understand many people felt baited by the trailers making it seem like it was going to be a one-to-one retelling and ik many of us want characters like Knives, Kim and Lisa to be important, have their key moments and be adapted properly for once. (Myself included) But I genuinely appreciate the approach they took here. Turning it in a murder mystery-type deal focusing on Ramona and having her make peace with most of her exes was a bold choice and I honestly am down with it. Ramona in the movie felt more like an afterthought and wasn’t even going to be the true love interest for Scott given the way she and him had zero chemistry but he had all the chemistry with Knives. (Which was a bad writing choice imo because the whole point of Knives is that she’s too young and good for someone like Scott) For once, she feels like a character that bounces off the other characters great like she does in the comic and she has far more agency here than she did in the original comic or movie. Genuinely a good move in my opinion.
    That said, everything else is fantastic. The animation, the score, the exes are all phenomenal here. Combines the best elements of the comic, movie and game all into one big package. As a diehard fan of this series, I’m super happy with this adaptation and hope there’s more in store!
