    I moved to Cerro Gordo in March 2020 because of the pandemic and to relieve our longtime caretaker so he could be back home. I've been here ever since. There have been ups and downs, but I feel I am learning a lot and becoming a better person.
    Follow along on this channel for more from the town. I have no plans to leave and will continue making videos to update the progress on all the projects!
    The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of ore out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
    The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
    The Los Angeles News once wrote:
    “What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
    In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.
    It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.
    The type of things that might lead you here are interests in ghost towns, abandoned mining towns, abandoned cities, California history, the zombie apocalypse, ghost stories, scary stories, nature, death valley, lone pine CA, mines, exploring, overnight challenges, exploration, urban exploration and yes theory.

      Have you already talked about how you're stocking up for provisions and plans for the winter? If not, that would be interesting to hear about. Also as many others have said, I think you should dig up the time capsule and watertight seal it as well as store the SD card data on some other medium. Also make sure you leave some kind of record in stone that the time capsule exists if you want someone to find it... You probably don't need to bury it so deep under the foundation but maybe I'm wrong about that... I love your channel. Best of luck to you and the Cerro Gordo crew.

    If it's not too late to dig it up again, you should. That thing needs to be better proofed against the environment. It needs to be waterproof, it needs to be airtight and it needs to be free from internal moisture. If the only precautions you took are the ones we saw, then the more delicate contents will break down in less than a decade. Even the small amount of humidity absorbed into that T-shirt will likely be enough degrade the paper products over time.
    A cheap solution would be to make the bucket airtight with a few dozen layers of plastic wrap and clear tape then take it to a tire shop and give it a nitrogen flush to push all the air out. You need to get rid of all the oxygen and moisture inside that bucket and this is the cheapest and easiest way.
    Now that you have an airtight vessel you need to protect it. Go to the hardware store and get a roll of self adhering waterproof membrane intended for use on foundations. Wrap your bucket in a few overlapping layers until its at least a half inch thick, but more is better.
    This is probably good enough provided you are careful when burying it. I would advise you fill the hole with a layer of sifted sand so no rocks are in contact with the vessel that could wear through the outer layers and cause a puncture. But you could protect it even more by encasing it in concrete, but make sure to attach a label to it so future archeologists will know that this big lump contains a time capsule instead of just being construction debris.
    This region appears to be at a high elevation and looks like it is pretty dry for most of the year. But if you are putting this under an occupied building there is a very high possibility that someday that basement is going to get flooded, somehow.

    • @gunderd
      @gunderd 3 года назад +72

      Also, consider that you stopped digging when you stopped finding things like bottles or interesting things. You could probably increase the likelihood of someone finding this in future by not digging it quite so deep. I would also consider including things like electrical specs for SD cards, filesystem documentation, specs for ASCII/utf encoding, and then include on the SD card specs for the file formats used in ASCII format to give the future archivists a leg up. (Maybe also stick to simple file formats (eg. Uncompressed .BMP) that don't require things like frequency domain math or understanding of compression technology too! :))

      I remember reading a readers digest magazine when I was a kid, and they had a story about some archeologists in the future having done an archeological dig, whereas they discovered artifacts that resembled earnings, a headdress and other implements, and came to the conclusion that these items must have belonged to a vary important person of royalty, such as a princess or a queen, and they had a sketch of what this princess or queen might have looked like wearing these royal implements. The picture showed a woman in a fancy robe wearing the headdress, which was actually a toilet seat around her neck, with the lid at the back of her head, and earings which were actually old fashioned drain plugs hanging from their original chains, along with other bathroom accessories which adorned her. Her appearance rivaled any present day archeological exhibit depicting an excavation of royalty. So if someone excavates objects they are unfamiliar with, who knows what meaning they might attrach to those objects, and whether that meaning even remotely resemble reality 🤔

    Hi Brent, just a little suggestion about your time capsule. You should have put it in a cornerstone of the new hotel. That way people know where it's at. Five feet under the basement floor they may never find it. Plus a plastic five gallon pail is not going to weather well under the pressures of five feet of dirt and concrete. If possible dig it back up and put the stuff in a airtight stainless steel box that can be sealed in a wall of the hotel with a stone marking the location and date it. Just a thought before you start pouring concrete.

    • @Duerre_Wildstar
      @Duerre_Wildstar 3 года назад +1

      Yeah, I can't imagine a plastic bucket is going to handle the weather well. I'm with you too, bury it where someone can dig it up. You could bury it and cover it with a concrete block and stamp the block with "Do not open until XXXX" or something.

      Yuh, Jason, I thought the same thing, an old ammo box..maybe from CG, would be nice, too. I like the stone marker/sealed wall vault idea with an open date. Then, Brent, you could be assured (or more sure) it would be found and not be opened for...500...10000 years.

    I absolutely loved the message you put into the time capsule. Honestly you should keep a weekly diary and put it in a bookcase in Cerro Gordo, so that whoever the next owner may be can read them, you would be adding a ton to the history of the place, and hey maybe you could read them in a video every once in a while as well, cause it was really lovely hearing you read the message out over the beautiful background music, it sounded like an audio diary you would hear from an adventurer in a game while following their traces.

    I live in a home that was built in 1821: with a sketchy and mysterious history. It is my place of solace and intrigue from the false world we now face.
    Knowing how much effort it takes me to maintain by 200 year home on a half-acre? I can’t imagine the amount of effort you’re exerting to rebuild an entire town; while making time to explore.
    Although do not have mines? My home was originally a Native American trading post. I’ve found many antiquities in the lawn, over the years, and your show has re-inspired me to keep digging deeper.

    BRENT READ THIS!: The data on your memory card will degrade in less than a decade. It is susceptible to what is known as 'flip bit'. Cosmic rays cause parts of the memory to flip from 1 to 0 or 0 to 1, causing your data to corrupt. The higher your altitude, the more likely it is to happen. Memory cards are generally terrible for long term storage. I think what you are doing is fantastic, and don't want to 'that guy' with bad news, but thought it better to say so you can consider your options. Keep it up dude!
    Edit: Yes, it was a terrible example about why the cards can degrade over time. A better example as stated by mikeselectricstuff
    and azurefox below (thanks guys!) is charge leaking away from cells. Flip Bits do exist for the reasons stated. See my other comments below.

    I grew up in Ridgecrest. Every weekend my folks would take us up into the Sierra's to camp. But we would also head up into all the side roads off 395. On one of our drives, my dad took us up to Cerro Gordo. It was quite a drive, especially if you're a 12 year old kid who just wanted out of the car. I remember the view. My mom loved it. I think I saw Whitney from there. It's been awhile, and dad had promised to take us to dinner in Lone Pine after our drive, so I was more interested in that than exploring. I wish I had been old enough to appreciate it more then. (I think that was 1975!) Mom and dad are gone now, and I live in Oregon. There's so much history out there and I miss the Sierra's terribly. So glad you are bringing life to Cerro Gordo again. Bless you! Stay safe, and stay warm Brent. :)

      It was a fachist channel that tried to indoctrinate and control minds. It was cancelled during 1776 2.0

    Recently stumbled across your channel. I think what you’re doing is so memorable and will be bringing this ghost town back to life. Amazing videos and love the idea of the capsule.

    I'm in the process of watching your videos and all your joys and sorrows. Just finished watching your Time Capsule video. I have a feeling, sad to say, that long after I'm gone, and you're no longer the caretaker of that beautiful piece of history, it will all go back to Mother Nature and be forgotten. I wish it could truly live on for another couple hundred years or more...
