Blowing Up Dynamite To Get Into An Abandoned Mine

- Here's a continuation of my search for ways into the main Union Mine at Cerro Gordo without using the central shaft and hoist. This time I start with the Omega Mine, using a loader, backhoe, and dynamite to bust in. Then it was onto the Bullion.
A couple weeks back, Johnny and explored the Bullion Mine in what was the most terrifying mine exploration I'd ever done. You can watch that here:

*Exactly Josh, Some of those 8"x8" beams 12' or so long had to be three man jobs on horizontal tunnels alone.*
Right! They are not close to big trees and saw mills. So back in the day, how’d they even get all that material to and INTO the mine??
@@donnachristianson1502 For most of the journey, trains and ships would have carried the timber from where it was felled to the train depots and shipping ports of Los Angeles, but from there they'd likely have had to haul everything up the mountain via horse drawn wagon or similar type of hauling vehicle. There _were_ some steam powered wagons that existed at the time that could have handled that kind of load, but they weren't designed for that kind of rugged terrain and were mainly used to move cargo between ships and warehouses or factories on the docks.
It's actually so cool that he has this massive collection of books on Cerro gordo that he can read and then go find what's in that book. Sooooo cool
It pays off to investigate, books can be a wealth of knowledge if you look.

I mentioned this earlier in a previous comment and figured that it's worth it to put it out there.
I know that exploring abandoned mines is inherently risky, but that makes it all the more important for the team to be cautious and smart about exploring. We've seen that Brent understands this but Johny being risky for the sake of looking "cool" is a great way to get both him and Brent killed. Johny is very mistaken when he mentions that, "As long as it's my life I'm risking I'm ok," not only because he is risking Brents life, but he also is risking all the lives that may have to venture into the mine to save him if he gets stuck or breaks a leg. Brent, you are the responsible one here. What you guys are doing is very brave and I admire you for that. But safety comes before ego.
Well said. The hardest and riskiest thing in the world is going down a hole in a rescue operation to retrieve a man who was too reckless to take elementary precautions. It is tantamount to going to the moon for same.
I was trying to find a comment exactly like this. Very well said 👏 The dangers in the mines are endless. The fact that sometimes when there are risky and “cool” things being done, it poses a threat. Would love to see more precaution when they go down instead of these “cool” stunts :/
One of my local heroes passed away recently. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamish_MacInnes
Part of his legacy, are the many innovations in safety and mountain rescue equipment and procedures that he devised.
There is always risk when you go into risky places.
The trick is to identify, and manage that risk. Wearing a hi vis jacket is not about you looking cool or otherwise, its about helping others to see you. I've done my fair share of dumbassed risky things, and so far, been lucky enough not to die.
I've also seen enough examples of what happens when you make a mistake, to know that the only thing that saved me from being the guy on the stretcher or in the body bag was luck.
Keep exploring, keep learning, but first and foremost keep safe.
Pretty sure hes just making light of it.
I’m so jealous of your life. I live in an old military building in Alaska built in 1904. It has all sorts of old relics and things I’ve found over the years. If you ever need a chef to come out there and to cook for the crew and help explore and fix up old buildings I’d be there in a flash.

Johnny, the helmet, glasses and vest are industry standard. You look prepared, not like a dork. As someone who typically does all black and has to wear this stuff on site too, I empathize. Doing reckless things doesn't make them not reckless, until you do get hurt or worse.
plus, if he gets hurt down there, his friend is gonna have to rescue him. So it's not just your own safety that's on the line.
I lost respect for both of them after they proceeded without proper gear. Brent should have insisted and worn one himself.

@@IEarlGrey neither does he, hes talking about the feeling of the original guys statement
Never realized how big those places are till you had your friend in the shot for scale, wow!
Hey! Great video!
A few more things about climbing:
1. do not put your arm or head in between the rope and whatever you're climnbing. always keep it in between your body going straight up. Because your arm or head will get trapped in between the rope and the wall or ladder or something else and that could easily break your arm or get you trapped.
2. always secure your rope on multiple points. you tie it down a few feet away from the hole or ledge, and then tie it down again where your rope should be to descend. there are special anchors for this purpose.
3. use pads on the points where your rope is tied around something or where it rubs on a ledge to protect your rope from abrading. climbing rope is expensive and any fraying means that your rope should be thrown away because it won't be safe anymore.

I never knew about nitroglycerine headaches, that was interesting to learn! Thanks!
Peanut Turner yep, my grandfather was taking a nitroglycerin pill for his heart ache, and always got him a headache...
It opens the blood vessels in the body really wide causing a bad head ache. I had to take it once and that's what the doc told me. The head ache was one of the worst I have ever had.
The fact that miners got headaches from NG is what started the medical community to investigate it. It turns out NG dilates the arteries in the body (hence the pounding headache). However, dilating arteries that are closing from a clot or plaque is a good thing for heart patients. As a paramedic, I've given NG to lots of folks with chest pain. I always joke with them and tell them not to sneeze or the NG will explode! :)
Could you just have them hold a stick of dynamite instead of making them take a pill ? :D
Arthur Kortekaas only if YOU are giving them the stick to hold and staying close to monitor the situation....

Have to write this as I can't watch this in good conscience without knowing I said something. The absolutely casual relationship with safety or concern for best practices in these videos is without a doubt a foreshadow of tragedy. I do a lot of dangerous things, and I am constantly trying to win back slack against the odds with thought, planning, and equipment. Watching these I am 100% sure there is an unfortunate incident in the future if things continue the way they are. So certain that you're flirting with disaster I would feel bad watching these without commenting.
If you own that mine- you set the rules. Safety isn't negotiable. Because one person is cavalier with their life doesn't absolve you from the impact of the fallout. Think of how you felt when the hotel burnt down... the regret for not thinking about the wiring. Now think of that moment after someone acting cavalier and moving too fast gets buried alive, crushed, hell- just a bad leg break, pressure pneumothorax, or a bleeding wound... no way you're going to get back up in time.
Your margins for error are much smaller than you think. That guy being reckless isn't just endangering himself, he's moving quickly and headlong into things that (even if he's the only one who dies) will massively impact you mentally, physically, emotionally, and monetarily. You are missing a ton of warning signs and you may lack the fortitude to be authoritative with those around you. I say all this out of a concern for where this is heading.
Edit: Happy to see you being MORE safety cautious. But you need to stay on that, think over the horizon. I like your videos and your enthusiasm. I don't want anything to happen.
Agree. Literally one wrong foot and it's a broken ankle. The guy is wearing Converse. A rusty nail through the foot. Game over when you are 300ft below ground and miles from anywhere. The recklessness is bordering on arrogance.
I agree. Reckless = stupid. I'm not impressed by Mr. Reckless. Some gets killed, Brent gets sued and loses the mine. Locals that have helped him abandon the project. All because someone was more concerned about cool. There is a safe way to explore this mine. The cavalier attitude towards safety would get you kicked off my mountain.

Opening anything with dynamite, I cant help but watch
Seriously, theres NOTHING on tv as good as this. And why I watch your mine adventures before I go to sleep is beyond me. But I cant help it. I'm addicted. We all say to you two stay safe,be careful , don't be wreckless., but you do what you do and your guardian Angel's are there, whiskey in hand, saying "They are at it AGAIN."
When I first heard about miners I think of selfish people that look for ores but this guy goes down the mines for the story of the place and to find old things. And so does Johnny he just wants to have fun he is the most risk taking person I’ve seen
" you can almost *feel the levis* back there"
my favourite line of the month, thank you
I just can”t understand how people give this a thumbs down, we love watching it here in the uk 😊
There just haters. That's all
Awe I’m so glad you said that about speech... I keep correcting your pronunciation... it’s the mom in me.... Johnny..... safety first... you never look silly when your safe💜
Im so excited for you to dig out the Omega tunnel now! I mean I was before also. BuT I literally cant wait for the episode where you dig out that entrance!
Hey bro. I love your content. Enjoyed it from the start of the 1ste video. Much love from Holland. Keep it up!!
Thanks for exploring for everyone! I'm sorry it didn't connect. I hope the omega tunnel does! Either way, you are mapping the tunnels officially and that means a lot for Cerro Gordo. Keep it up! Stay safe!
Ah shoot, spoilers. This is why I shouldn't read the comments before watching the video.
