Treasure Hunting Along The Famous Cerro Gordo Tramway

- It took me 12 hours to walk all of Cerro Gordo's former tramway, but I'm glad I did!
This aerial tramway was how ore was moved from Cerro Gordo to Keeler below. It stretched about 8 miles up and over peaks and valleys. Miners used to ride the tram back up the mountain from Keeler after a day at the bar.
A lot of the tramway was far away from any road, leaving it relatively unexplored. My hope was to find artifacts to return to Cerro Gordo's museum.
These days, mining tramways are a thing of the past. As mining changed to open pit mining and large trucks and more efficient road building became available, they became obsolete remnants of the past.
The timbers will eventually decay away and the wire rope will rust into dust. And all the history and innovation that went into these beautiful structures will be lost on future generations.
So hopefully this video will give you an idea of the magnitude of these systems, without you having to make the 12 hour hike yourself!

First as a hiker, credit to hiking it. Then as someone that's made a few amateur videos, credit to the great job of videoing it all and the hours editing the whole thing. Then the cherry on top, the narration of the history and your thoughts. A lot of effort went into this video, what a great job.

You had tow sets of two large drums each, one at the top and one near the bottom. They are weights, probably filled with rocks. Their purpose is to tension the main stay cables. As temperature goes up and down the cables expand and shorten. These tension drums then go up and down, keeping a. Instant tension on the main stay cables.

No joke😊😊
The "water tanks" you saw were actually anchors, filled with rock and soil
Actually big weights to keep the cables tight, or they would sag.
@@caddmannq You nailed it, they were counterweights
I think they were stationed on top of the structures because the structures themselves were not anchored into the hill but rather sat on top. Kind of like putting sandbags on "A" frame road construction signs. I think they were just used to hold the structure down and in place to keep it from moving around as the loads swayed and jostled along the route.
@@BrokeMoFo Every cable tram must have weights to keep the cable tight when you load the cars. Those timber towers were surely anchored to the rock with wedge anchors that rusted away. They surely also had lateral guys or stays, to help keep them from creaking and swaying.

I’m sure you already have these artifacts recovered by now. But if you bring a crew of people to move these things to a few central drop areas then you can have a helicopter fly in to drop a dumpster or two. Then load em up and air lift them to town. Takes a bit of planning but doable.
Watching you following the cables down the mountain, made me think about the men who laid those cables. How hard and dangerous it must have been. They must have been hardy. I have a feeling Brent is going to rebuild the tram one day.
Yeah he'd have to have a team for its construction though
Probably not, he doesn't own the land that it would've connected to in keeler. Plus there is little to no financial incentive to rebuilding the tram in it's entirety, maybe select pieces of it, probably the first tram station at cerro gordo.

The "water tanks" were probably weights for tension the cable.
It looks like they filled them with rocks to make the counter weights. Simple clever solution.
Agree, have seen something similar at other mining tram stations - sometimes large counterweights were hung from the rear of the station to keep it from tipping over, not only to apply cable tension.
Thanks, that makes perfect sense now you mention it
Came to the comments to say the same thing. Really cool system
I was just thinking the same too. They look like they were full of rocks, not water. The metal pulley/worm device was at the top, not the bottom. Similar systems are used on overhead power lines for trains, but on a much smaller scale.

@@GhostTownLiving honestly, as soon as we have the vaccine and your hotel is open for bookings, I'll be coming over.
It’s amazing that after centuries, this rigid terrain is no match for all our modern technology, short of helicopters coming in and lifting those buckets out. It is truly a marvel how those men created these systems in the rigid and harsh mountains. I love the narrative of men 100’s of years later having to walk the buckets out to the road. I wish I could be a part of this. Truly a masterpiece. Thank you Brent.
Thanks for watching the video! I agree, it's almost mindblowing to think of what they accomplished when building the tramway...
@@GhostTownLiving It's a little simpler than you'd think, because all they had to do was build the stations and then drag the cable up the mountain, likely with another, smaller cable. The really impressive part is that they somehow got all the running gear (wheels, bearings, etc) up the mountain somehow. That probably just amounted to a whole bunch of dudes, and a whole bunch of mules, pulling them up on wooden skids.
Also, that tramway would make for a very, very serious zipline experience. I know it had to have crossed your mind, but people would come and pay just to experience that, which would be the same experience those miners had back in the day, plus a little modern accommodation and safety.
@@jttech44 i was thinking that as well.. making the world longest zipline at gordo would be just damng cool

It would be cool to see the tram or a part of the tram restored. Just imagine building that thing back then with limited equipment.
I was thinking the same thing! It would really help move all the stuff he’s finding and can be used as a ride for guests
I think the best and cheapest way is to use the old cables, build 2 or 3 temp towers leapfrog the buckets down closer to the roads letting GRAVITY do the work.
I love tram. I restored a tiny poma lift.
Load buckets at top with rocks. Their weight would pull good stuff up from the valley below.

Love the background music in these vids, so peaceful
I do believe my dear Sir that you have just stoked the imagination for the most wonderful restoration project of your entire existence! Of course many years from now and many millions of dollares, but......
😎👍 One of the best of your videos!
I’m calling out RedWing to send you a pair of boots!
Where you at, REDWING!!! May the greatest hockey team and boot maker of all-time chime in with some boots for our dude!
went to redwing to get some restitched, instead they gave me a new pair. Typically spend more there but you cant beat that customer service
I think a nice low grade insulated elk tracker would do him very well up there. COME ON REDWING/SETTER!!
@@skinnedtoad449 you prob need to tweet them so they see it. They may not use youtube
Great boots, but not the comfiest. I have a pair of leather, hi top boots. Even with the more padded soles I bought, feet still hurt at the end of the day. But they are durable as hell!
I love when he gets excited about everything he finds because it makes me feel more normal about my passion for old things that have survived🌝🤍
Me too! I love the color of the wood and the patina of the metal after 100 years outside.
@@robertartac1853 lmao rust isn’t patina, metal doesn’t patina.
@@ohanaross-roberts9719 patina is why copper is green. Patina definitely forms on metals.
This is one of my favorite videos yet because of teh history of the trams. I loved every minute of your journey following the tram lines and the treasures you found. I'm amazed that one tram bucket still hangs several hundred feet above the ground...and still has stuff in it!
