Two Years Living In An Abandoned Ghost Town!

  • Hello everyone! This month marks TWO YEARS that I've been living in the abandoned mining town of Cerro Gordo. It's truly hard for me to believe that. I came up here in March of 2020 to escape the pandemic and spend time in this town I love. That has led me on the journey of a lifetime. Since then I've explored abandoned mines, hiked in beautiful settings, rode my dirtbike all over the place, rebuild cabins, and fully fallen in love with this town.
I want to thank all of you so much for the support and following along over these past two years. This has been a journey with a lot of ups and downs and I think going into Year 3, this town, and myself, are prepared for the long journey ahead.

Hello everyone! Thank you all so, so much for the ongoing support. What a crazy two years it has been and it seems like the journey is just beginning. None of this would be happening without the support from all over the world, so I truly want to say THANK YOU.
In terms of videos on the main channel, I know I haven't been putting out as many, but if you're interested in more Cerro Gordo content, I've been putting out shorter things here: ruclips.net/channel/UC1XenEF-Gia92L9_9axVtwA
What would you all like to see most in Year 3 up here at Cerro Gordo?

The American hotel rising from the ashes, as it will, excited for that journey. Maybe a cafe, so the volunteers and visitors can eat. And the theatre maybe coming to life at some point. Would be a great place, to show your videos but also some on the historical figures of Cerro Gordo past. I'm absolutely all for quality over quantity. One good video a month, with a few shorties is 👌 So happy to see you refreshed and renewed and ready for 2022. Wishing you and the team, all good things for this year. 😊✌️🇭🇲

Hi from Australia. I grew up in a gold mining town outside, Rockhampton, Queensland, named Bouldercombe or in those days it was Crocodile Creek. They had numerous pubs and a large Chinese population and that caused some riots in the 1800's. I grew up there between 1945 and 19961 and my brother and a couple of mates used to check out the mine tunnels except one that was dangerous. There were 7 waterfalls near these mines and further down the creek was a dredge that searched for alluvial gold. I am now back in Rockhampton after being away for 44 years, 30 years of that with our military. I am now retired and have followed your videos from the start and enjoy the tours and stuff you find..
After seeing your map of your mine I had a thought. Perhaps if you had the mine map scanned on your laptop and coloured in every mine you checked out and made notes of each level with comments that you could refer back to for future adventures with groups.
Stay safe and all the best for your dreams of the future of it. Maybe after the hotel is rebuild
t and other places, you may have some people interested in running some businesses to allow you more time to explore.

Brent, please, as I see this... I can only tell you again that it is incredibly adviseable to always wear proper quality safety footwear with sole protection, anti-slip soles and toecaps in mines. Also some sturdy rubberized gloves, maybe even cut-resistant and with a good grip for the protection of your hands! You may never know what gets into even the smallest cuts, or which boulder or nail may ruin your foot. Especially in those old mines, where all kinds of rust, bacteria, and mold flourish and the most random things lay around. Please take care of yourself and always wear the proper gear!
I work in archaeology, and don't go so deep down into risky mines, but even for myself, the right shoes and gloves have saved me from losing fingers and shattering my feet to pieces, and I don't want to talk about getting something stuck in your foot (Done that as a child, it's not pleasant to say the least). I know it's pricey, and you may feel like it's unnecessary, but caution and quality do pay off when push comes to shove, and it's most often the most minute things that make the biggest difference. Rather spend 60$ extra on some really good brand stuff than 10$ too little on something that gives you a false sense of security.
Also make sure to always keep such vaccines as Tetanus up to scratch! The smallest amount of rust in an open wound can cost you a limb or be deadly.

First thing, chickens don't sleep alone in a place, they sleep together to varm each other, make a peice of wood away from the ground, they will sleep on it, because in nature they would sleep in a tree! Also it's males it easier to remove poop. second, they need water all day, in the vinter put like a heating pan under the water so i don't freeze!
Last thing, make a light in the house, so in the winter they will still lay eggs in the winter they will otherwise stop laying eggs because of the lesser sunlight! If you have any other questions be sure just to write me a message!
    Good luck with the chickens!

Looks awesome Brett. I have some extra waters and feeders I can send you for Chickens. If you can ask around for pullets around 6 months. They have all their feathers and start laying around then. Chicks need 95°temperature the first week 90 ° temps 2nd week then continues to drop 5 degrees every week there after. Chickens need fresh water on a daily basis. Wish you the best. I Love your channel.

The last 5 minutes were so important and indepth. Every video did show the crazy progress you made over time which is always fun to see and with this one you show how you make a proper future plan for the town. Having weight off your shoulders will benefit the future a lot. Not just for the channel but also for the town and especially yourself!
Quality instead of quantity was well said here, the reason why I (and probably many others) love the videos is because of all the small and well thought of details as well as your calm and good explanations. Your videos could easily be put together into a professional documentation. It often feels like watching a tv series made by tens or hundrets of people.
I can't wait to see how the next 2 years will look like. Keep up the great work! :)

There's a channel (Abandoned Mine Models) that's been making 3D animated models of the tin & copper mines of my home county of Cornwall, UK (which is a mammoth task in itself!).
I wonder if something like that would be useful in mapping Cerro Gordo and its surroundings for future exploration?

Wonderful. The first video I ever watched of you was when you walked into that valley and set up camp on the hillside of that abandoned cabin/mine. The ups and downs, animals, gardening, everything that has happened. Is so unique. You're able to express clearly and the emotion comes through and draws us into a world non of us out here have ever dared to experience.
    You've made it possible.
Cerro Gordo is on my trail list to visit.
    Until then, be well.

Scotty seems like a great addition. It's good to know you have some help. Also having friends and people around seems to be good for you mentally. I've had a few chickens, and they need to also be able to come outside of the pen during the day as they use the dirt for dust baths to groom themselves and they like foraging around and being out in the sun. Chicks have to be under a heat lamp for a while if they've been separated from their mother (that's what their mom's wings are for, to keep them warm) . I loved having chickens for that egg a day.
