I am friends with Bobby Caldwell. He is still pouding the kit and holding his seat in a Hall of Fame one day. Rhino and Lee have passed on. Rod still lives in California. This group an al bum will be remebered for all time. Good on ya.
Rod and Lee wrote all the lyrics for the first two CB albums. The melodies were of course by Rod. The guitar riffs/basic structure mostly came from Rhino, with some help from Dorman on arrangements. Caldwell came up with the drum parts, naturally.
Since you know these guys, do you know if either one of The Allman Brothers ever played with them? I'd heard that Duane Allman jammed with them, but can't confirm it.
What a stellar group of musicians. The guitarist just rips, the drummer---wow. What a shame they only gave us one album. This video is a treasure to find.
mark price ......the band followed up their brilliant debut album with “Sufficiently Breathless” (still have my original vinyl) but I always preferred the debut, sheer magic! I love loads of varied music but for me, this album remains an absolute gem.
CAPTAIN BEYOND,THEY WERE AHEAD OF THE TIME, THEY HAD PURE MUSICAL INSIGHT, WHEN MOST BANDs THOUGHT THEY HAD IT TOO,. CAPTAIN BEYOND ,ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER IN ROCK HISTORY .😎BOB.
It's not just 'Dancing Madly Backwards On A Sea Of Air'! This clip is of a performance of the entire 3-song medley, , just as it was on the album: 'Dancing Madly Backwards On A Sea Of Air' segues into 'Armworth', and then 'Myopic Void'. A killer live performance!
3 albums that hardly anyone knows but should own is Captain Beyond 1st, keith relfs Armageddon and Night Sun - mournin`.. 3 totally brilliant non mainstream albums
Uh....1971? This was so far ahead of it's time. At that point nobody had really merged hard rock with progressive. Different than King Crimson and Yes and that ilk. Just absolutely killer. I am a musician, and all of the musicians I have known over my 45 years of playing loved this album back in the day. Awesome....and they turn all of this over note for note live.
+Lee Jackson ... incorrect on all counts. Even Rod's original group, DEEP PURPLE, had done progressive hard rock - so had the unique JIMI HENDRIX, so had many other bands.
he is talking about a group that would blend hard rock with progressive as about their whole music style and not random songs, so he is absolutely right
I'm so glad I'm old. In the 70's in Birmingham we had concerts often as 3 days a week. I think seriously I've seen 75% of all rock bands from this era at least. God blessed the 60's/70's, I know I was there....music that meant something. Plus Bobby Caldwell's hair was awesome!
Wow. The memories. A friend seen them open for Alice Cooper at the Hollywood bowl @1972. I was just getting into prog rock and this was much more than a toe tapping has a good beat to it stuff. Them and Yes turned up my enthusiasm for prog rock ever since! Prog rules! Besides back then who was actually able to dance when everyone was in a " I saw colors" mood
I've got the hologram album cover too! Most underrated heavy rockers of the early 70's. Rod Evans is a killer singer and Bobby Caldwell is a monster on the kit.
And we wonder where all the heavy music came from that we love now...hmmmmm....I been listening to this band for some years now...they are amazing!!! And there are some heavy ass riffs being played!!!
I worked in a college radio station that played only classical music. They gave away "other" promo albums. I heard the beginning drum part and offered to take the album home and the station manager agreed. I STILL listen to this album, now in CD form.
DAMN, what a video. I was just spinning the CD of this album a few weeks ago. Still have the album with the hologram cover. My brother came very close to flat wearing THROUGH this LP from playing. I seem to always hear something "new" on this '71 recording. First time I've ever seen a vid of CB & they are SPANKING this song. Thanks, Kleet, for posting!!
I saw these guys in Hammond Indiana... Most don't realize, but the singer did Hush for Deep Purple, and the Bassist did Ina-Gada_De_Vida for Iron Butterfly
You are spot on my brother. I saw that show/tour, Tony Kaye was the skinniest person I had ever saw. The best CPY show was in Arlington, Tx. when they opened for King Crimson...73' I think???
Oh, I adored Captain Beyond, their debut album still blows me away. It’s an absolute treat to be able to watch them perform the “magic” so huge thanks for sharing.
And that real tricky section is 9/8 + 19/16. That dotted 16th note (8th note triplets) thing comes in on the 'and' of 5 and takes the space of 4 counts (8th notes in this time signature). So it's one extra 16th longer than 9/8 --> 19/16. Of course, they probably weren't thinking about that and were just going "dun dun dun dun dun dun crash" in their heads lol.
Rod Evans the singer hasnt been heard from since about 1980, i made something about him, to see it just type in search bar the following title......Where is Rod Evans ?
Back in the day I really liked this song and still do now. Looking at it coupled with the video now I can both see and hear the technical expertise being combined to make this trippy' song. That is surely a tricky beat to get right for the drummer and the snappy mixes to blend in different changes and tempos... there really is a LOT of talent going on here. Was nice to hear a slightly different version of the guitar solo (as opposed to the album/studio recording). I wonder if at concerts they extended this part. I see by the comments the Bobby Caldwell is the drummer and clearly quite revered. I regret I'd never made myself aware of this. Seems he's up there with my all time favourite drummer John Bonham. In fact, may I say I couldn't help but feel there were similarities... that 'slurred' beat maybe? Not sure John does (did) that 'snappy' thing the same way though. I mean, holy f*ck - that's really something to hear and of course now, to see. Reminded me a little of the drummer who played along with Santana when they did Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock. This to me is the best drum solo I've ever heard in my life, though of course he did have some great percussion backup. The whole thing though, each of them combined to create something very special here.
It may be a cliche but they definitely don't make 'em like this anymore.....early 70's had SO much great music, not only rock but all the great black groups like the Spinners and Ojays(the undisputed truth?!!)and also the likes of Croce,Cat,Carly etc etc...
Been listening to a lot of Spinners, Ojays, Howard Melvin and the blue notes, and Stevie Wonder just as important as the Rock music of the 60s and 70s great stuff
This band lost Larry in January. Lee in December. If you have never heard their first album then you have never heard the best. Bobby Caldwell is the man.
The verses are in 5/4 (the guitar solo is in 4/4 and then it goes all "Drummer Wonky" in 11 and then back to 4/4)! Try Tull's "Living in the Past", too. Or my own "Dragons' Teeth", not to mention Brubeck's "Take 5" and Akeboshi's "WInd".
Honestly, not everyone gets this! You have to be either a real musician, or at least "get it" musically to understand the masterminds here- Go Bobby, Go!
Rhino was in Iron Butterfly in 1970 and some of 1971 until the band broke up. He played very well on Metamorphosis, along with Mike Pinera. IB reformed in 1975 with Eric Braunn and Ron Bushy as holdovers from earlier incarnations. Ron Bushy was the only original IB member to be in all versions of the group as far as I know.
John Vinga hey, thanks John,I appreciate the low down on the different members and wow, they recorded a lot of stuff considering they disbanded so early, right on!!!!!
rod evans must be on the top of vocalists of history music
I concur with all the comments. Rod Evens is the best
What a drummer!!
Most under-appreciated, under-rated band of the entire period.
I loved them then, got the CD and wear it out. But gotta wonder why they were so darn short lived? They owe us at least 5 more albums.
I am friends with Bobby Caldwell. He is still pouding the kit and holding his seat in a Hall of Fame one day. Rhino and Lee have passed on. Rod still lives in California. This group an al bum will be remebered for all time. Good on ya.
looks great!
Darrell Ducharme Bobby wrote all this music right?? Not sure who wrote the lyrics. One of my faves of all time. The "Captain"!!
Hi.. do you know something else from Rod?
I always n still believe Rod Evan's is the perfect Singer he was great in Deep Purple. Just my opinion 😉
That's the stuff, right there.
Rod Evans......... amazing!
Rod Evans sounds even better here than on the album. What a voice. Thanks for posting. They were on hell of a live band,
Only great
Rod Evans has always been one of my favorite vocalists. His voice radiated cool from the first time I heard Hush on the radio.
Hard Sound. Great English hard rock act
Was only 14 , but Captain Beyond & Budgie both kicked major ass
Amazing. Great drummer. Bobby Caldwell. Killer groove
ONE OF MY FAVORITE BAND,HAVE ALL THEIR ALBUMS.
Brilliant stuff
In one word woooow!
'Captain Beyond' and 'Sufficiently Breathless', their 1st 2 albums are MUST HAVE!
Dawn Explosion also
these guys were so ahead of their time.
CAPTAIN BEYOND,THEY WERE AHEAD OF THE TIME, THEY HAD PURE MUSICAL INSIGHT, WHEN MOST BANDs THOUGHT THEY HAD IT TOO,. CAPTAIN BEYOND ,ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER IN ROCK HISTORY .😎BOB.
hence Captain "Beyond"
Gopti Gupta Gupta
Damn straight Bobby
It's not just 'Dancing Madly Backwards On A Sea Of Air'! This clip is of a performance of the entire 3-song medley, , just as it was on the album: 'Dancing Madly Backwards On A Sea Of Air' segues into 'Armworth', and then 'Myopic Void'. A killer live performance!
I drove my mother crazy listening to this album back in the day.
3 albums that hardly anyone knows but should own is Captain Beyond 1st, keith relfs Armageddon and Night Sun - mournin`.. 3 totally brilliant non mainstream albums
I got here by way of a King Diamond interview naming this band as a major influence. Had never heard of this band. Killer stuff
These guys should have been huge. Incredible talent and songs. I
Uh....1971? This was so far ahead of it's time. At that point nobody had really merged hard rock with progressive. Different than King Crimson and Yes and that ilk. Just absolutely killer. cream ? deep purple ?
That is exactly what I meant John. Thanks man...
This is one of the best songs of all time!!!
One of the best concerts I ever saw....... Captain Beyond and Flash.
RIP Rhino.....!! I still eat this album for dessert!
Escutando este som, percebi que não conheço nada de Rock.
Saudações Roqueiras.
Rod evan is the 1st vocalist of Deep Purple (1968) and he also the 1 st member who formed the Deep Purple in 1968 with ian piace.
unreal my buddy had a little studio in his cellar we used to get buzzed and listen to these guys. great tunes
RIP Rhino.............Larry was a gent.
love this band, don't come no better
Great band, one of my favorites from 40 years ago! Got to see them live in 71(?) in Odessa, same lineup on the first record. I got it!!!
loved this band. ahead of their times.
Love this band. Listen to Johnny Winter "And Live!" Caldwell knocks it out of the park!
Evans voice as smooth as silk. I usually prefer studio cuts because they take care of the rough stuff...but this guy has always done live "WELL"
i dont think there has ever been or will ever be as mind blowing of a band, probably the greatest hard rock band of all time.
You tend to forget how great this was, especially given the timeframe. Real nice performance, even better than the studio version.
Just the coolest ever... RIP Lee Dorman...
Excellent
One of the greatest rock bands ever........and that's all I need to say. You dig?
Cool
LOVE EM !! I HAD THE ALBUM WITH THE 3D PIC OF THE GUY ON THE ASTEROID !! HELL YEAH !!! WHOO HOO BABY !!! ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVA
I've got the hologram album cover too! Most underrated heavy rockers of the early 70's. Rod Evans is a killer singer and Bobby Caldwell is a monster on the kit.

Montreux Jazz Festival, April 30th, 1972!
Great!Amazing performance!

I saw these guys in Hammond Indiana... Most don't realize, but the singer did Hush for Deep Purple, and the Bassist did Ina-Gada_De_Vida for Iron Butterfly
Damn I know this is an old post but if you see this what year? I could have been there. saw some great bands there.Rory Gallagher,Kansas.
Jim, good to see you here. I have my tix for tonights Chicago show. Can't wait.
Good information there. Loved the Hush song way back when.
You are spot on my brother. I saw that show/tour, Tony Kaye was the skinniest person I had ever saw. The best CPY show was in Arlington, Tx. when they opened for King Crimson...73' I think???
Armworth is so fucking awesome
Just loved this band at the time.
Oh, I adored Captain Beyond, their debut album still blows me away. It’s an absolute treat to be able to watch them perform the “magic” so huge thanks for sharing.
How did I miss these guys, would love to have caught them live.
Timeless
amazing
Estes estavam, ao ....lado dos BEATLES....a frente de todos os outros.....GRANDES.
10.

Yes, great. Wish Rhino would have played the intro licks. Its not like the rhythm section was weak ;) Thank you for posting!
I still have the original vinyl of their self titled album.
Beautiful album. The riffs
yum yum music
Captain Beyond was #Nasty!!!
☆☆☆☆☆
bom demais!
It's a medly. Dancing Madly Backwards/Armworth/Myopic Void. First song on the first album. Awesome live version!
Bobby Caldwell
Was there ever a greater band that was more neglected than Captain Beyond?
Rare Bird!
This is alluded to in Clutch's "Rising Son". I recommend giving that a listen.
Great tune, 5/4 to 4/4 time.
And that real tricky section is 9/8 + 19/16. That dotted 16th note (8th note triplets) thing comes in on the 'and' of 5 and takes the space of 4 counts (8th notes in this time signature). Michael Shreve....Santana
What a band they were
Oh, MAN, TheO - that Soul Sacrifice drummer @ Woodstock. One of my most memorable images. He was in The Zone...
I'm sure there are metalhead guitarists out there who wish they were Rhino.
OPTIC NERVE~
Funny how the friends that grooved out on this with me then are gone now!!! Not dead..just out of touch with music.
Donald Ulrich Some are "Line Dancing"
+Donald Ulrich So true!
It may be a cliche but they definitely don't make 'em like this anymore.....early 70's had SO much great music, not only rock but all the great black groups like the Spinners and Ojays(the undisputed truth?!!)and also the likes of Croce,Cat,Carly etc etc...

Reminds me a bit of Cactus
Wow,I just found out Rhino was in Iron butterfly,is that correct?
Rhino was in Iron Butterfly in 1970 and some of 1971 until the band broke up. He played very well on Metamorphosis, along with Mike Pinera. Screaming King Neil Embo that's why I knew the moment I seen the Album it was gonna be good ! Couldn't stop till I learned the whole Album !
Screaming King Neil Embo ........Lee (RIP) was also from Iron Butterfly and Bobby had previously played in The Johnny Winter group.
