  • The shooter who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump was spotted wearing a shirt from popular gun-tuber Demolition Ranch ‪@DemolitionRanch‬ . Naturally, this has prompted him to respond to this. As a fellow RUclipsr, it made me think how I would feel if something like this happened with someone wearing my merch or was an avid viewer of my content. Should there be liability and/or responsibility for content creators? Mr. Terry shares his thoughts.

    Yeah it's an interesting question on the relationship between someone with a platform and their audience. He seems like a pretty chill dude, and you can tell that he felt embarrassed as well as sad that he had to make that video in the first place.
    I'm from UK and am politically/socially left, so my stance on guns is probably predictable - I think gun culture is stupid, I think the 2nd amendment and its modern interpretation is stupid, I've never fired a gun, I would never want to fire a gun, I have no family members who were in the military or the police, I think there is no reason for someone in the UK to own a gun for pretty much any reason (if the gun is in working order, so obviously museums and collectors that decommission the firearm don't count), and every time something like this happens I feel sympathy for Americans but I also feel grateful that we do not have US-style gun culture in this country. We recently had an incident in London where three women were killed by a man using a crossbow, and it started a discussion about whether crossbows should be legal to buy in this country or how much they should be regulated. I didn't even know you could buy a crossbow. But it's always funny to me that everyday Americans have access to some of the most efficient and brutal killing machines ever developed by man, and then are surprised/appalled when someone uses them. It's insane to me.
    BUT, I will admit that I am guilty of seeing guns and gun culture as a partisan issue, mostly because of things like the NRA, and I like to think that I don't assume that everyone in the US who has a gun or is interested in guns is a maniac who intends to kill people, but honestly I probably do. I mean, you guys still have some pretty dangerous wildlife to deal with, which we don't in the UK, and this dude is from Texas and seems to be somewhere pretty rural so I could accept the argument that it's not only lawful that he owns and knows how to use guns, but it's actually sensible. And yes, if y'all are going to have guns, then it probably is a net benefit to society that YT channels exist that teach people how to use guns safely, that teach trigger discipline, that teach a healthy respect for the killing power of guns etc., although that said I'm sure there are plenty of "guntubers" that are just doing it for the thrills or to be subversive and to get a bunch of kids excited about how cool and edgy they are. So I can admit that my own bias might mean that I would be more likely to assume that a guy who runs a YT channel about guns (excluding historians) is Republican, is more likely to support Trump, and more likely to be a 2A nut job from an ex-Confederate state, with more cousins than teeth and more pick-up trucks than brain cells. But I can also acknowledge that that is not always going to be the case, and this guy is the proof of that. I feel bad for him, although obviously I feel more bad for the family of the gunman and for the victims.

      American gun owner here. Regardless of our opposing political beliefs and ideas regarding use/ownership of firearms, I can respect your opinions and I understand why you have them.
      Frankly, it is people like said shooter who give guns/gun owners a bad rep and it’s quite possible he acquired one legally simply because as a young adult he hasn’t racked a criminal record yet.
      I do also want to add that while there are such maniacs that frame the gun community in America as reckless and extreme in some cases, especially to those in countries where firearm ownership is practically almost nonexistent, an overwhelming majority of gun owners in America are not as gung-ho as more extreme and entertaining examples portray. Frankly, a lot of us normal gun owners tend to avoid such behavior and are weary of anyone who behaves as such.
      I say without arousing a political debate that I do very much believe that the right to bear arms is essential, especially in modern terms. That being said, it is on the bearer of arms to assume the responsibility of owning such lethal weapon through respect and awareness of oneself and others in regard to its use.

    I love how you addressed firearms being not as partisan as many people believe. The anti-gun movement was actually a right-wing position in the 70s and 80s largely to disarm the Black Panthers. Personally, Im left-leaning in many ways. But I support the proliferation of firearms in the public. My argument for this is historically based where you can add up the body counts of disarmed societies versus armed societies, and suddenly armed societies seem 10x safer, especially when they have the same type of weapons as the agents (military or police) of the state do. However, many anti-firearm people bring up school shootings, mass shootings, and suicide. And these are absolutely concerning elements, and I may not agree with their position, but I know it comes from a place in their heart of meaning well. It really isn't as cut and dry as many people with more traditionally partisan beliefs make it out to be.

    Mr Terry don't attribute him wearing the shirt as him being a fan of Carricker. It could be just as easy he hated firearms and wanted to throw them in the worst light. The same for registering republican (as well as screwing with the primary - which has been happening for more then a decade). The fact is we don't know the reasons he used for doing things. It's the age of false flags. More then one incident was done because the shooter hated firearms and wanted to make them look as evil as possible.
    LMFAO. The question about mental health being on the waiver is not because they care about your mental health - it's a cover your ass because the insurance company will come for you. There is a correlation between mental health and suicide - but we don't know if there is one for mental health and mass incidents. In all honesty the question being there is stupid because people who need treatment lie about it because they enjoy the stress relief of shooting.

I knoe personally I own a few pieces of RUclipsr merch, and my dad might take a shirt from time to time not even knowing it's merch. It's funny because sometimes people would comment on it and he would have no idea what they're talking about.

    What i feel is being neglected in this debate is that we seem to not be isolating the issues of political abuse and intimidation which you can find very handsomely online with the issue of Gun control. Abuse and all that is nothing new in politics but just the idea that you can easily get access to a powerful piece of machinery that can pierce through someones flesh in rapid succession is just so questioning for me.
    It isnt just about language but it’s about gun control, and it’s about inadequate security that went on with Trump. And sadly, like most times we see gun violence, its getting lost and drowned out by other topics.
    As someone else said about the UK, here in the UK, we have restrictions on guns here. And its weird how people are saying "well the last time someone attempted to assisnate a head of Government (i.e. the President) was in 1981 with Reagan" well in Britain the last time it was attempted to assassinate a PM with a gun was in early 1900s.
    I do think this has been largely overshadowed the context with what the issue is. Gun control. At least you shouldnt get someone access to an assault rifle and before someone says "oh well its to protect from foreign invaders and the Government" those institutions have accesss to fighter jets, tanks, nukes etc.

    • @StefanWB
      @StefanWB Месяц назад +9

      Yeah I'm from UK as well and I agree, that always seems to be the topic that American mainstream media struggles to discuss in a nuanced way, but it's so anathema to us Europeans and how we live our lives. Now, in fairness, this dude is from Texas, and I think there's probably a few good reasons why you'd want to have a gun in certain areas of Texas to defend yourself from wildlife, whereas in the UK we just don't have that. Foxes piss on things and steal your slippers, and scream at all hours of the night, but they're pretty much harmless to humans. But in terms of the human impact of guns and humans relationship with guns and the culture, it's completely alien to us. Like, we had an incident in London recently where three women were killed by a man with a crossbow, and that started a debate about whether we should regulate or even ban crossbows (I didn't even know a person could just buy a crossbow. What are you hunting with a crossbow? Grey squirrels?), and that just doesn't seem to ever happen in America.
      And yes in your last paragraph, well that is the ultimate fallacy and stupidity of the Second Amendment, isn't it. If the purpose of the 2nd amendment is to ensure, as Alexander Hamilton wrote, that there should be "a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to (the military) in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow citizens.", then surely this means that every American citizen is entitled to his own unarmed drone, or ballistic missile, or whatever arms the military uses and then ships to Israel or sells to the Saudis so they can use them on Yemenis.
      To quote John Green, from the great Crash Course U.S. History: "It's almost as if Hamilton had no way of knowing that technology would one day advance past the musket."

    • @FilmNerdy
      @FilmNerdy Месяц назад +10

      @StefanWB I like how this subject and travel has been going because you opened up other areas of debate. And I think sadly this has been lost whenever a topic of Gun control or Gun Reform as I think we should say in Americas case. It gets so lost by the bi partisanship in America. If you support gun control you are boxed as being on the left, liberal but if you support the amendment rights as unquestionable and intangible rules then you are labelled as right, Fascist or Gun nut. But really, it's the innocent and human suffering from the victims that suffer. And sadly, the whole politicking on the individual/personality rather than the questioning the tools and instruments they want to use is being ignored.
      And you make a sound argument on places like Texas and the South that feel the need to have guns. Heck, I support Gun control/regulation, but if I ever moved to a place in America where there is a high circulation of guns then I would buy one. Not that I want to have it, I would have to have it just to have that protection but I also know that i would be part of the problem on circulation. But I don't think we should be putting our weight on the individual as I know it's the system that is at fault. I'm sure there are many Americans who have guns who like me if I so happened to move to America and purchase a gun with my above example don't really want to have one. But that's how broken the system is. I especially question why someone would need a heavy piece of machine with hundreds of bullet magazines, rapid firing, good sight targeting needs to have a weapon purely for self defence. So I think small movements could be made by if we can't question the guns themselves at least question the type of guns accessible.
      That last paragraph ties nicely to the recent crossbow incident which I also saw and was also like you puzzled...why is this allowed, what need or use does a crossbow should be allowed to be used. It's not even used as a sport etc.
      And also the military industrial complex is of course as your leaned into such a driving factor. But I do think we need to reset the narrative and with this shooting happening on Republican turf maybe, just maybe, some Republicans might not feel the issue isn't just isolated to just a topic that is was seen as just a Democrat issue.

    • @StefanWB
      @StefanWB Месяц назад +9

      @@FilmNerdy I mean I said this in my own post, but I'm probably guilty of seeing the debate as a partisan one, and of sometimes lacking sympathy or making judgements about people in US who use/promote guns, and I have very strong personal feelings about gun culture and the gun reform movement that are aligned with the political/social left. But your point is a noble and human one, it is always the system that is ultimately to blame, and it does make me believe that real reform can only happen if there is open and honest dialogue and not just endless blaming or bad-faith arguments. It probably is helpful for the Republican cause that they can paint Democrats as the anti-constitutional nanny-state commies who want to take away their guns. And yes, the debate has to start with banning assault rifles and automatic guns that are clearly designed for warzones and/or to kill humans at range in high numbers. People can still have their single-shot hunting rifles, or small handguns with 7-10 round magazines. That seems to me a reasonable starting point.
      And I learnt in the aftermath of the crossbow incident that it is indeed a sport, albeit a niche one, and that sports/hobby shops are the kinds of places where people are able to buy a crossbow. And that makes sense to me, I mean archery is still in the Olympics, but I was completely ignorant of this fact, until of course some nutjob decided to buy one and use it to kill people. Sad.
      And on the military industrial complex, it's interesting to note, on the subject of partisanship, that the specific term was used by a Republican president - Dwight D. Eisenhower. He saw the path that America was going down, and tried to warn them. If only they'd listened, I guess.

      As a American I don't agree with this. Isn't about left or right for what I'm about to say.
      If you believe that just because the government has nuclear weapons, aircraft, warships, tanks, etc that means we can't fight a tyrantical government is ridiculous. You cant nuke your own population, jets and tanks can only be used in open fields (aircraft less likely but unless you want to bomb cities with possibly hundreds of thousands of collateral that'll give fuel to the rebels.) Tanks do not do well in urban warfare. Look up the recent Russio-Ukranian war. Rn the US stands at 1 million service members in all branches (including nation guards) compared to the hundreds of thousands of Militas that dot the US and knows the lands generally better than a average service member. It'll be guerilla warfare. I don't need to tell you how well we did when our adversary used those tactics. Vietnam.
      As for why you need such "machines" it's a great equalizer. I get the British doesn't understand because their empire died in the 90s so now they're stuck as the size of one of our states. But you don't give someone a fair fight. That's not how you win. In fact that's how you will easily die. Someone tried to stab me I'm hitting him with .45 caliber rounds. A person won't drop dead from a single bullet. Hell rarely you can survive a headshot. Bullets and humans are weird. They do weird stuff and what should "kill" us sometimes is survivable. Now to go back. Adrenaline, possible drugs in the system. Will make you much tougher. You don't shoot once to wound because then the person can charge at you despite having a hole. It's all over the Internet. Trust me I seen it on many occasions. Also the reason we shoot to kill is the attacker can sue us and take our money that way, then we get charged, and lose our rights. It happens a lot.
      Now for the reverse. Britain, Scotland, Ireland, and Prince of Whales (I believe that's all that makes the UK) have very restricted gun laws. Yes I'll give you that gun crime is non existent. Yet knife crime is out of control. You cant even buy a kitchen knife without needing to microchip it to "prevent crimes". You also have very crappy laws with self defense. In fact you legally can't. Because if you went "too far" you are charged instead.
      Now I said enough and about to go do some chores. I'll leave with this final.
      Humans will always find ways to kill one another. Be it with sticks or nuclear weapons. You should never be restricted or willing to give up your rights for security. "If someone is willing to give liberty for security. They do not deserve neither" -Ben Franklin. We have the second amendment for a reason. It should never be infringemed. You can't back up your freedoms if your claws are dulled. It always annoyed me how European looks at us like we're gun crazy killers when they got much more issues, my ancestors escaped Ireland from the Irish Potato Famine and came to America for a reason. Freedom. But if we give up our firearms, how can we have freedom be ensured? I don't need to go far to show what a government will do to a unarmed population. If you think they won't. They will. China, Russia, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, I could go on. Do not respond until you read it, and reread it. This is the most civil I been involving my rights. Besides all that I enjoy this channel for not diving into politics. Good day.

    LMFAO the only history teacher I can remember is my "American History" junior year in 2007. The reason I remember him is because as a Chicago suburb he was Pimping Obama incredibly hard. I have Hereditary chronic migraine, so I missed 40ish days a year! That being said he seriously disliked me for bringing up Dr Ron Paul and his ideas. He would almost exclusively teach African American American history then he'd give you, his finale. A week before the end of the semester he would give his students a 50-100 page packet of the state curriculum that was needed to pass the state mandated finale! Another state mandated test was the US Constitution test, which I was the only student that year to get 100%! I failed US History in my junior year and was forced to retake it during summer school. Where I met one of my favorite teachers of all time, I knew 100% of the normal course. The summer school teacher pulled me aside and asked why I had failed; I explained my medical issues and what the first teacher had done. When I told the summer school teach what happened he immediately went quiet and excused me. My senior year I purposefully took law as my "history credit" to have that great teacher and passed with a low A. The cherry on top is 2 years later I learned what happened, the first teacher was fired and went on to be the ticket guy at the door of the local Sams Club!

    Hi new here, am just watching anything that has to do with the shooting of trump, and there something u said about people that go to the shooting range and need to fill out a form, well my son was 21 and he was I guess subscribe to a shooting range here in Wisconsin and I didn’t know, he ended up buying a gun may 18 online and did store pick up on Tuesday may 21 and killed him self may 22, now I don’t know all this works, all I know all the information I got from he’s phone and with the email confirmation and purchase date and I went tru he’s room and found the receipt with the date he went to pick it up. He passed all the background check and what ever else is needed I don’t know am not interested in learning how to get a gun. My son had untreated ADHD, no drugs use, no alcohol use, no smoking. He was only a gamer that had just built hes own gaming PC and had a job that paid him 20 an hour, I don’t know how he passed the checks they do to get a gun and him having mental issues, he wanted Me to give him permission to have a gun in the house for safety reasons and I told him no because u r not mentally ok and u have a younger brother with autism. I miss him every day and I wish he didn’t pass them paper to be able to purchase a gun.

      As someone with autism/ADHD this broke my heart to read. I am so sorry.

      @@StefanWB thank u I’ve been doing some research trying to find answers or anything that can help me understand why, but I’ve found out that there a certain percentage of people with ADHD and autism that don’t commit suicide but there is that other percentage that does. I know He would be so hard on myself with any little task and I tried my best to understand him because I knew he saw things differently than me. We where on the process of getting our credit score better, we had plans for the future but I guess it just wasn’t going to happen
