"Even when they fail, they're reliable." I have a funny anecdote about that. I have a Mk1 MR2, with the good old fashioned 4A-GE. I made a quick supply trip to Walmart the night before an autocross event, and heard a strange noise, but didn't think much of it. Left bright and early the next morning as I had a 100 mile drive ahead of me, and that noise just kept persisting. Got to the event, registered, helped some with setup, then went to take a look at the car; my crank pulley was wobbling around. So I pulled off the left rear wheel and went to tighten the crank pulley, but it was still tight. Something worse was wrong. Put the wheel back on and decided my day of racing was over before it started and drove the 100 miles back home. At work the next day, I got the car up in the air and pulled the pan and the first main bearing cap. Lo and behold, my crankshaft was broken between the first main journal and the first rod journal, and it had gotten me down the road for around 230 miles like that.
I drove for 1000 miles with a rod knocking 1ZZ. Eventually it ran out of bearing to chew through and was just rod on crank, I just drove it home to where I had a motor sitting and turned it off and swapped it.
