This should be a series with lots of popular amps. I love the high gain amps but they just don't do it for the majority of situations that I find myself in but it would be awesome to get as close as possible with whatever amp is available.
I agree
Couldn't agree more!
Agreed as well
agreed.
Agreed.
Bonus points if they are budget amplifiers
Dude you made that thing sound slaying! God bless gain stacking.
I'd love to see this with lots of classically "low gain" or blues/jazz type amps.
Here's my first majir challenge to you Kyle: try this with an AC30!
I know that amp is *not* your thing, but that just adds to the fun!
Hope to see more videos like this, excellent content!
I was looking at a nice old British Korg one of those YESTERDAY at Guitar Center, but unfortunately I had a couple too many dollars with me and I ended up with a new Friedman Plex instead.
Maybe next time. Kinda weird actually, I have more than two dozen Voxes but still not any ACs.
AC30 FTW! Although it's on a vintage side, a treble boosted AC30 sounds great and works quite well paired with a modern sounding amp.
Note for Kyle: if you really have to mic AC30 with an SM57, try it with one set at an angle. IIRC you can get quite a good results with an SM57 set at the edge of dust cap but facing center.
What I love about this is that it's a lot more versatile than your usual high gain amp would be. Here you get the cleans, the amazing low-gain stuff, and all sorts of colours to the high gain, since you'd have to construct that from scratch using pedals. I love my Mesas, but this is so cool, I'm considering getting one of these HDRX 20 now, haha.
Hey Kyle, a little bit in the same vein, I remember you talking about getting a tighter sound out of a Marshall 1960 cabinet by reinforcing it in some way. Would you still be up for doing a video about this?
Cattle Decapitation's guitarist Josh Elmore turns his Hiwatt into an extreme metal beast, even though those aren't designed for that at all.
Are you sure you’re not thinking of the fortin designed Hiwatt? Iirc he used one of those on Death Atlas
Oooohh....i can dig it. Its one thing for an amp designed for hi gain to do....hi gain. Im always looking for ways to juice the older stuff.
As a fan of doom and stoner, once you dialed in the EQ on that Walrus AGES I was tickled. I would absolutely use this amp as a high gain platform, throw a RAT in front or something of that ilk and I think that could be a VERY usable tone. Imagine that with P90's droooooooooooooool
Really dug the intro. You're a funny guy. I laughed several times throughout this video. Good job
It can be done via gain stacking. You might even be able to get ungodly amounts of gain by using some of the ODs as a dirty boost rather than a clean boost. Transparency is rare; you would need a dedicated clean boost like an RC booster or Vertex boost, or an OD that is truly transparent, such as a Timmy or Lightspeed.
Brawndo. It’s got what amps crave. It’s got electrolytes
This is what I've been doing since the mid 2000's. These days I play a '75 Traynor YBA-3 with a Zoom Tri Metal pushing the front end.
Nice work, KB.
the guys in the 2000s metalcore/mathcore scene (like kurt ballou from converge) did this back in the day (and now). i think kurt used a metalzone with the gain all the way down, as a boost, into a jtm with the gain maxed
I've wanted someone to do this.
I loved the flow of this video and how the Amp made you fight to get it to do metal.
A few pedals I love using I would like to try on that amp is my Ibanez pentatone, EVH5150 and Revv G3. Something like this amp is why I love gain stacking to really tweak the drive and help dial in that drive tone! Great video, Cheers!
Love this video format. I loved it when you took the old school Marshall and did the same thing.
This is also why the rectifier is my favorite high gain amp because it can be poked and prodded to make sounds that can fit on any type of album.
This was awesome loved the last two pedals in that amp hell of a idea 💡👍🏻🔥
awesome video!
I recently got the matching cab of this in a trade and was curious to try one of these as a British-alternative to my Deluxe Reverb, but had just decided that I don't really need it. This is definitely not helping my GAS. I wasn't even planning to use it for high gain, but this sounds gnarly AF.
I have to try this with my synergy deliverance. Good tip👍🏽😊
The Ages overdrive pedal from Walrus Audio sounds really good. I think together with a good equalizer pedal you really get impressive sounds out of this amp.
Nice video! 😊
Grrrreat content, thx, Kyle!
some of the coolest tones I've heard you get! gotta do this with a Legacy Vl-100!
I threw a Legendary Tones Hot Mod in mine and its a beast now.
Yeah he wasted all this time and didn't swap tubes...smdh
Dang, I didn't even think this would work in this amp, but now my GAS for one is even greater 😍
@@derek_d Yep, the Evo 2 reverse wire one will work in V2 position.
Don't change bro love your show and your direction
You are very funny beside, I find myself loughin a lot sometimes, you are deliver a lot of very very usefull info!
Really loved the video Kyle! Loved the cavemen pictures at the beginning, You should always show cavemen at the beginning of your videos. If cavemen were alive today, what kind of guitar tones would they love? I think we all know the answer. Great playing!!!
Fucking finally I’ve been dying to see someone boost one of these into oblivion to see if they can do that boosted plexi shit. They’re an absolute bargain for a plexi style amp but all the demos are blues boomers trying to live out their Clapton fantasies.
Ayup. It has knobs and stuff, but it requires effort.
On form today loved the intro
Soldano wow! Surprised Me!
sounds like old slayer with pedals
I don’t even use a conventional “amp” . No tubes, nothing expensive, and I can still get any tone under the sun.frfr powered speakers and properly stacking pedals. I couldn’t bring My triple rectifier everywhere and even The Laney IRT became to much. Sims and plug ins and cheap pedals these days smash and It’s a very original, personal, and unique signature of Yourself! You can make that amp sound like anything
Yeah the walrus at the 17:20 mark 🎉
Keeley Moon sounds effin' HUGE through my HDRX 20 & 1x12 Hempback, very doomy! Friedman BE OD Deluxe also rips 🤘
I run this amp with a Tumnus Deluxe and a BE-OD deluxe and can get any level of gain I want. Sounds great to me
😂😂😂 that intro was too extra in the most hilarious way lol
Cheeky lil Coheed & Cambria lick ❤
They Marshall "Origin 20" is cheap, sounds realy good and take pedals extremly well ! I use a Natas distorsion.
Appreciate the this is off topic.....but PLEASE try Jensens MOD speaker. I only suggest because I think you may like it...... Keep up the good work, cheers from the UK. 🤘
PRS used to make a amp (I believe) 🤔called the David Grissom Custom 50. I don't know, Mister Grissom always spoke of it like that brother who stays locked down in the basement, and it has been pretty much expunged from the PRS website. Anyway Righteous Guitars sent me one, and it looks to have all four of the EL-34s necessary for the job. I am wiring up a couple speakers in Styrofoam boxes so I can get in the room with just one quarter of the actual horsepower. It is a promising device that has apparently only been subjected to melodic plinkity-plinking stuff like what actual musicians would inflict on it.
I would never be so cruel. My JC120 was done that way on the road by David Gates, and I swore to that poor machine that life would never be like that again. My other equipment likewise gets to stand tall and do what's right. If necessary I have some good pedals as well to achieve satisfactory outcomes. Tuesday when everyone has gone to work it is going to sound like Doolittle and a few dozen Mitchell Bombers are having a thirty-second traffic jam in the skies over my driveway. Gotta be careful, the Police Station is three blocks away. 👮♂
7:03 That brain hang-up got me laughing so hard, man xD
That intro...yoooooo. Also, the math looks to be (any amp) + SLO pedal * EQ pedal = Fuck Yes
If anything was ever going to make me want to buy this amp and the ages pedal that tone was it. Fuck yes! Give me more of that please!!
NO1 rule for getting hight gain out of vintage style amps is, roll the bass knob back as you increase the gain.
The difference with something like a Soldano is that the eq section is not part of the preamp circuit, so it happens after the gain stage. Whereas the eq on a vintage style amp is more like the tone control on a distortion pedal.
Bro you should have the new JHS Hard Drive on the pedal broad.
SLO pedal chugs when dialled up in-front of a clean amp... this also in, water is wet...
Playing with gear and experimenting with different tones is really fun. I think a big part in way everyone basically sounds the same is because there is no effort or experimentation when trying to get a good tone......and everyone uses v30 speakers 😆
11:56 I can definitely hear some squealing there after you pushed the Presence up! Pickup coil whine?
Now try this with an old London City DEA 130. A Mesa V-twin pedal. And a Boss EQ. Thank me later... 😊
I would have use a rat or rat clone like the new keeley super rodent would have been perfect. Since it’s a blend of sd1 and rat. With the tone and clipping switches.
An hm2w or similar pedal would have done the trick too
I saw that the Mr scary mod works in this amp.
Nice
Are you ever going to bring that engl xxl back out to play?
Marshall Guvnor > 100w Super Lead. We did that 25 years ago.
Sure 😂

Carcass
"Not a real photo" 😂
Can it Yngwie?
Oog make rock
What does "voiced" mean in this context?
Play geetar KB 🤘 very cool amp
I watch your videos to see how other people use pedals, watch how you stack them, and to laugh.
Oh no soldano time
Yeah but who's got that $ whare is the budget stuff!!!
Ive got that amp but always thought it was too fat and flubby
First
