costs vary... here that would have a base cost more around $3.. and we'd have to use something besides Texas Toast, that disappeared from the shelves here back in 2020 and never came back.
This just inspired me to take the open faced bologna sandwich from my childhood (cheese, bologna, slice of tomato) but make a whole oven-roasted sandwich outta it with an egg on top!
That sounds familiar! When my mom didn't feel like cooking, she'd throw together cheese, tomato, and bacon open-faced sandwiches and broil them. SO. GOOD.
I make something similar, but I scramble the egg & mix it with the cheese, then spread it on lightly buttered bread and air fry until the egg is puffed up & set.

I wonder if cutting out a circle in the top slice of bread would work better for bigger eggs? Like for egg in a hole? You could butter and bake the cut out circle alongside the sandwich for dipping!
I really appreciate your joy and your bright, loving enthusiasm the food. You are refreshing an amazing host of food and culinary cuisine. I grew up in Oklahoma and (at least in my house) we never used Texas Toast for regular garlic toast. (If we wanted that, we bought a French loaf and cut it ourselves.) Texas Toast was reserved for this type of sandwich. We didn't always do an egg, but we did always use a rough & tumble 80s toaster oven that got the outsides extra crispy while the inside stayed soft. Great with all the typical savory sandwich fixings but I would also make PB&J or PB&B (banana) this way, with a divot in the bread to hold just a little extra filling in the middle and having gently pressed the crusts together to reduce leakage. 🥰
I just made this. The entire egg was super runny after baking it at 355 for 15 minutes. I recommend baking for 25 to 30 minutes if you have a large egg. I finished mine in the microwave for one minute and it still tasted yummy.
Yum! I can’t get over the thickness of the bread slices!! 😮 I bought a loaf of extra thick toast bread last week, and the slices were half the thickness ! I would prefer your version 😊
Instead of using a small bowl to make the indentation, I'd recommend using a spoon and making the indentation bigger. Closer to the edges and in more of a square shape with a border near the crust to hold it all in.
Texas toast, in Texas, is just thickly sliced white bread, buttered on both sides, and toasted lightly. Usually served as a side when any type of gravy is involved.
I was so down for this until the 2nd cut the rush of lots of slimy uncooked egg white. I will definitely need to cook mine a tad longer. Sounds delightful 😋
Went down a rabbit hole of your videos and found this again... making this for our Christmas breakfast! Happy Holiday's Emmy! Hope you and your family are having a great morning.

Thanks Emmy, this is a great recipe. Here in Australia, I don’t think we can still get Texas Toast, but a trip to the bread shop and a request to slice a loaf extra extra thick would work.
I saw this video and was immediately moved to try the recipe for myself, I switched up things a little and combined shaved ham and turkey just for a little added jazzy pizzazz thanks for sharing much appreciated!

OMG those look amazing - I’m definitely going to make them this weekend! The only thing I will have to try and do is cook them just a little longer, I really don’t like eggs quite that soft but other than that, Chef’s kiss :) ❤
Yes, I agree. I also wonder if it might not be an idea to separate the egg and add the yolk in later, somehow? I like a runny yolk, but not runny whites. Maybe placing a small metal cookie ring on top and the white part around it might work. And then in the oven for the first 5-10 minutes and then take out and remove the cookie ring and put on yolk and cheese around it. And then back in the oven.
Mathed it out for Real Canadian Superstore shopping. Bread .49 for 2, egg .34 each, cheese slice .25 each, mayo using 1 tbsp serving size measure .19, butter same way of measuring .20, shredded cheese was a range for serving size so went with 35g was .74. Total 2.21 for each sandwich.
Looks amazing! I think the thick cut toast known as "Texas Toast" might be a regional option, in New England I've only seen that sold as a specialty item in the bakery section. I think when people talk about Texas Toast as a garlic bread they are referencing the freezer garlic toast sold by Pepperidge Farm and Furlani.
My husband and I completely trust your sandwich/toast recommendations. All we have tried that has the Emmy check we've loved. We are actually going back though the catalogue to find more that we may have missed.
I'm gonna make this using Zero carb bread. I think the ham needs to be cut in one inch squares. Since there's no low carb version of TX toast I'll probably remove the center of the top slice so the egg can spread out thinner and cook a little more thoroughly. I might try cooking this in the air fryer. The crunch factor is fab.
This is a new way to make a Croque Madame! The garlic and honey version is definitely one I will try. In Australia, we can find that bread, it's usually called cafe toast but not easy to find. Best to buy a tank/pullman loaf and slice or go to a local Baker's Delight and ask for thick slice :)
As someone in the south it never fails to shock me how different the grocery stores/ food option are in different other regions. I can’t imagine a world where people have no clue what Texas toast is.
