This album let me know what heartbreak felt like, before I experienced it for real, and it was the exact same as the feeling this album gave me... Now this album breaks me even years later, reminding me of all the great memories and feelings I had with that person. I'm over it. Moved on. But the memories are real. The feelings were real. The whole song is darn near perfect, but that beautiful mandolin and 12-string guitar work on the outro elevates it into another stratosphere. What an amazing, brilliant talent...
I still remember the time when we drove through the desert in Morocco listening to this song and how excited you were when we finally arrived at Tangier. But just like the lyrics of this song, we had a falling-out, like lovers often will. And just like the lyrics of this song, you still live inside of me, we've never been apart.

I just had something amazing and beautiful with a fantastic girl, I still have very very strong feelings towards her and she has all the good stuff of kind person and a keeper. There's good people out there, it is rare to find them but it is possible. We had something, so short yet so sweet that it hurts so bad to be alone again but I'm happy for her and we both part ways amicably. You're not alone. I like the simplicity of this. Its just a genuine expression of affection and tenderness. His voice betrays so many emotions. Frustration, bitterness, loneliness, regretfulness. Each syllable of every word he sings expresses a different emotion. The emotions are complex, the words simple. Its a classic.
The problem with trying to rank Dylan songs is that every single one of them from Blood on the Tracks is a classic. And on his early albums there's songs like Blowin in the Wind, With God on our Side, Mr. Tambourine Man, Bob Dylans Blues and Dreams, etc. You'd have to have 100 slots to rank all the Dylan great songs

And funnily enough I went watching Bob Dylan and Neil young at their festival in London the last time they played there and turned around to my girlfriend and said now the only person I need to see is Eddie vedder, then they put tickets up for Pearl jam concert at Hyde Park the same place I saw Dylan and Neil young, this comment to just randomly read, really resonatedwith me.. Had it on rewind in 🇮🇹 1976-77 .perhaps that's why it happened over and over. Killer song. No ill will, just wistful disappointment. Sometimes you're impossible , sometimes they are, sometimes it's the timing, and totality of circumstances . And sometimes you will never know.

I bought this album on LP and Cassette at The Mushroom in New Orleans in 1975 while working on a cargo ship, loading in The Missisippi/New Orleans. Still is my definitive favourite amongst Dylans albums.

This song takes me back to my early twenties when there was much sadness all around. Happily a beautiful woman today has helped a lot to overcome that experience.
There are many Bob Dylan songs that you might like even if sung by others. Then there are the best songs, which just have to be sung by him ... like this one. Nobody can sing them like the master.
Timeless lyrics, his voice is so lovely So calm Hearing him sing always melt the heart One of my favorite songs and artist What do you admire most about Bob?
The musical composition, the lyrics, the vocals, the production ... put all that together and average it out and you get Dylan at his peak. Highway 61 was the work of a genius; "Blood on the Tracks" is the work of a master craftsman.
I always thought of this haunting song as the update of ‘Boots of Spanish Leather’.
Yes, I think both are "about" the same woman. But, as always, he universalises the emotion.
@@stephenlee1756 Yes, exactly and now it is from an older, wiser perspective.

"I replay the past. I know every scene by heart. They all went by so fast" broke me into so many pieces.
The best line on the song and its so underrated
“She still lives inside of me. We’ve never been apart” did it for me.
"We had a falling out, like lovers often will".

Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon

Suicide remarks are torn
From the fools gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.
Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel the moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.
While preachers preach of evil fates

Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.
A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Ensure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.
But though the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.
For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destiny
Speak jealously of them that are free
Do what they do just to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.
While some on principles baptize
To strict party platforms ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And say "God Bless him".
While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.
But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

I don't think any artist has ever expressed the excruciating pain of an irretrievably broken relationship between a man and a woman so brilliantly (and achingly) as Bob did on this album. You can actually feel the twisting of that "corkscrew to his heart" on every "bloody track" ....
A true Soulful wordsmith
well-said. like he wrote it just for me. Bob-speak. Genius.
The greatest musical poet, performer, and troubadour; Dylan, one in a zillion, his musical proverbs will be played on Mars and beyond!

@@miguelraeder3005 I don't like it
SURE WILL.
Uuumh.. maybe Bergman could not even make it to the US in Casablanca, so how should one make it to Mars? :)
Only God and Bob Dylan knows how much I miss her! If u see her say hello and if u get close to her kiss her once for me yes I always have respected her! If u see this comment I miss u so much
If you see her, say hello
She might be in Tangier
She left here last early spring
Is livin' there, I hear
Say for me that I'm all right
Though things get kind of slow
She might think that I've forgotten her
Don't tell her it isn't so
🎵🎶
We had a falling-out
Like lovers often will
And to think of how she left that night
It still brings me a chill
And though our separation
It pierced me to the heart
She still lives inside of me
We've never been apart
🎵🎶
If you get close to her
Kiss her once for me
I always have respected her
For doin' what she did and gettin' free
Oh, whatever makes her happy
I won't stand in the way
Though the bitter taste still lingers on
From the night I tried to make her stay
🎵🎶
I see a lot of people
As I make the rounds
And I hear her name here and there
As I go from town to town
And I've never gotten used to it
I've just learned to turn it off
Either I'm too sensitive
Or else I'm gettin' soft
🎵🎶
Sundown, yellow moon
I replay the past
I know every scene by heart
They all went by so fast
If she's passin' back this way
I'm not that hard to find
Tell her she can look me up
If she's got the time

Very well said....
It was beautiful, and it's over. A point in time.
🥲
When this man dies he will take half of me with him. God speed Robert.
Yes. Some people should never die.
with a pain that stops and starts - like a corkscrew to my heart - ever since we've been apart - amazed that it took 4500 yrs of known history for someone to put it so short and succinct - unless I missed something'
Yeah. He’s timeless as timely to this culmination of the ages. He could also sing a list of adverbs and make it sound fun if not profound
So many masterpieces, i actually forgot this one
If I listen to this while feeling a bit melancholy or revisiting past loves, I'm done. Weeping. It is Dylan's most tender song
One of the very most beautiful ballads ever made.

This seems to be the best break up song for most of us. The one song for your first and only true love of your life which slipped away.
Believe me,if someone's slipped away, that's not the true love.I've been through your pain, your thoughts...Week by week, month by month you'll be okay. When you become yourself again, you'll be even stronger. And there is a long, willing life lies ahead of you! There is not only one true love/right person.Sure you will find the right person someday, with or without him, you'll have a beautiful life if you try for it.
@@muzafferelbeyli2756 I agree with Muzaffer. I felt distraught over my recent ex just because it was 3 years, not because I loved her anymore. it's easy to mistake fear of abandonment for loss of love

Helloo!! I covered this song in my channel and I really hope you like it!! See you! 😊
Yeah, buddy!! (my fault, too)
The whole song is darn near perfect, but that beautiful mandolin and 12-string guitar work on the outro elevates it into another stratosphere. What an amazing, brilliant talent...
Do we know who plays those instruments on the song?
Totally agree. I cannot think of more beautiful guitar work. Swirls around your being in stereo.
I still remember the time when we drove through the desert in Morocco listening to this song and how excited you were when we finally arrived at Tangier. But just like the lyrics of this song, we had a falling-out, like lovers often will. And just like the lyrics of this song, you still live inside of me, we've never been apart.
In my eyes..there will never ever be a better or more important songwriter to have ever lived. Many many thanks to Bob.
'Oh, whatever makes her happy, I won't stand in the way
Though the bitter taste still lingers on from the night I tried to make her stay'... Sometimes I think I've been lucky enough to live my life while Dylan sang these gems, so that my feelings could find a voice...
What can anyone say about the most prolific genius in the history of songwriting. A total Einstein with absolutely no comparison. Love you Bob

Just went through heartbreak today, and I’m currently looking for any song that will make me feel like I’m not the only who has experienced this sort of immense pain.

Now I still think about her a lot and I guess time actually helps you heal but I'm still dealing with quite a lot of pain. Anyway, I can't stop thinking about the message in this song, which is how I feel right now. It definitely destroyed me, but I also respect what happened and now she and I have to keep going little by little. It hurts, it sucks and you have to cry a lot but that is that. Just try to be kind and a good person everyone, you guys are beautiful and handsome people
I just heard Dylan’s If you See Her Say Hello, recently. It’s out for eons and never a song I bothered with (til now) TG for true timeless artists among us or I’d die without music
I’m kinda dead without music
"I know every scene by heart, they all went by so fast"

I remember when my older brother Mark brought this album home we played it over and over I became a true Bob Dylan fan and have remained one for all these years thank you thank you so much
It's amazing to me how many people have a favorite line from this song for me it's although our separation has pierced me to the heart she still lives inside of me we've never been apart. The song still affects me the same way as the first time I heard it Bob Dylan rules
what a masterpiece. Dylan is the most beautiful songwriter in 20th century. Right up there with Vivaldi and mozart.
At 61 when I go back and listen to Blood on the tracks it’s so bittersweet cause it’s so emotionally stirring! God where did the time go.

I never understood why this one isn't talked about as much. It's one of my 5 favorite Dylan songs and could possibly be my favorite from the album
Agreed. I've never heard played in the radio, yet it's one of Bob's best songs. One of his most honest.

And "Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands"
This comment section shows how well Dylan wrote, how truthfully, to connect with the hearts of so many so deeply about such a collective experience
This song is one of the greatest ever written...along with Girl from the North Country and Shelter from the Storm...one of my Dylan top 5 favorites.

I absolutely love this song.

Yesterday, I danced to it, held so close by my husband.

Man, if I could ask for just one thing before I die, it would be:
- I want to sit at a table with Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Eddie Vedder and just watch them talking and singing about life, love and all the rest.
Oh my fucking god, in another life me and you would have been good friends, not many people would randomly go from Bob Dylan to Eddie vedder except me and apparently you, both very intruiging people with a brilliant sense of great music... I don't mean this comment to sound creepy or nothing lol its just such a rare find, it's the little things haha

Eddie Vedder? Throw him out for Leonard Cohen or those 2 guys from The Kings of Convenience.
The first time I heard this song those first two chords chiming away grabbed me. Acoustic guitars beautifully recorded & the lyric of a man close to falling apart, top tier songwriting.
