Dovetails with CHEAP tools, woodworking on a budget.

- In this video I demonstrate how I cut dovetails with cheap tools and still get decent results. Woodworking on a budget is definitely possible and you can still get go results and enjoy the process. A hammer, chisel, tenon saw and marking gauge is all you really need to get started cutting your first Dovetail joints.

Keep on rockin in the free world! happy new year marra
hope your back gets better, I know how it is.
Cheers mate, it's improving every day so I'm just being careful. Happy New year mate.
Great video mate these came out really nice 👌🙌
Thanks Ross 😁
Hello Karl,
The job I want to do someday too. I love swallowtails. It gives a different beauty to wood. It was great to achieve this with cheap tools. Congratulations. good job. Thank you for sharing. See you. Big greetings. Best regards. (buddy please be careful with your fingers)
Thank you Şahane that is lovely feedback. I'll definitely be careful. Regards Karl
Nicely done Karl 😁. Now when you said "Hand cut dovetails" It don't mean "Dovetails and cut hand" 😂🤣. You could start a "claret woodstain" trend if your not careful 😂. Great to see what can be achieved with basic tools. thanks for the video mate... now go and put a hello kitty plaster on your finger 😂🤣👍
Cheers Frank 🍻 I actually use Thomas plasters actually 😂 didn't realise I was bleeding all over the place until it was to late😬
Nicely done mate, attention to detail was perfect considering you’re using budget tools. Hope your channel has a bumper year 🍻👍👍👍
Cheers Dirk much appreciated. Happy New year mate.
Thanks Karl. This just proves that the skill is with the "ARTISAN" and not the tools. Great video mate.
Davy
Thank you Davy super kind comments mate.
Never rush,Rome wasnt built in a day mucka. Its all experience, love it when you see a bit of claret and you think wheres that come from.Nice vid Karl, keep up the good work
Cheers Steve ye totally agree 😊 I'm like a dinosaur when I get hurt I feel it 20mins later 😂 great feedback thanks 😊😊
Karl thank you mate that's a great how too video. I measure the center of things exactly like you with a combination square. Brilliant tips mate really find it easy to follow your tutorials 👍 👏 looked great ill be trying it later on cheers 🍻 👍
Brilliant I'm glad you find it useful mate. I like to make things as simple as possible, not over complicated. Hope you enjoy having a go at these as well.
Great finish when the colours really contrast and thanks for a traditional woodworking start to 2021. How long would you say this method takes for each joint once you've practised it a few times? Happy (and successful) New Year to you.
Hi Ben thanks and happy new year mate. I would say it's taking me about 25/30mins at the moment to do each side of a box.
As this video was quite long I watched you in bed on the TV! (Obviously I was in bed not you! Lol) I've not cut dovetails since I was at school, I can't even remember how they turned out! I see this video is doing really well for you. Well done mate 👍
Cheers James well I expect to see hand cut dovetails in your next video mate. 🤣
I got the same cuts and had the same reaction 😂 I figured out it's the side of the chisel when paring. Sanded them down to stop that! Great to improve your skills Karl, well done.
Oh ye cheers James, I was like how did that happen 🙄 really enjoyed a week off playing hand joinery. 😊
Although we cannot duplicate the craftsmanship of your work, it is still so much fun to watch you work your magic! The contrast in the colors of the wood is beautiful.
Lovely to hear that from you guys 😊 your to kind.
Great video & explanation. Out of all the tools you used i have the hammer, some cheap chisels, clamps & a slightly bent square.
Mm that could make a really really poor man's dovetail video 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂 Cheers mate, I'd love to see that🤣
Hi Karl. Enjoyed the demo great result using the tools you have. What this practice will do is when
you have the opportunity to upgrade to higher quality dedicated tools specifically for certain tasks.
You will really appreciate the ease of use and hopefully achieve a higher standard easier and quicker.
Cheers Tony, ye totally agree mate. I have found this out in several other areas mate.
Nice my friend! People always think you have to have the best or cannot get the job done and it’s just not the case. Very few things in my workshop are top of the line because I don’t need them right now.
Cheers mate, I like nice things to but needs must and if it's getting the job done. Happy New year mate.
Fantastic video Karl, thanks for making. I love the usual hand cut joinery channels like you mentioned, but, I always think I'll never get near to the standard as they've got a couple of grand in chisels, saws and marking kit.
Thanks Alister, its like anything else you see though on insta, tv and magazines whether its a body type or fitness thing to making we only see the bes,t the top 10 percent but in reality we can all do it to some level. defo have a go mate im sure you will enjoy the process.
looks good and this will definitely be the first joint i will be trying once things up and running. Keep up these types of videos and follow forever. i have followed many youtubers who then bugger off onto other things. Great work pal.
Thanks Chris that's the plan. 😊
Enjoyed the video! Great commentary
Thanks mate 😁
Great video to start off the new year, great detail as normal. Hope your channel has a great 2021 👍
Thank you Steve that's really appreciated. Happy New year 😊
Well done buddy it shows what you can achieve with low cost tools and you don't have to spend a fortune on all the fancy kit it would be nice to have the fancy kit but not always needed keep up the good work 👍🔨
Cheers mate, I've rec some really nice feedback from this video. I was a bit weary about doing it as I'm not a pro lol but I just wanted to show we can all have a go. 😊
Wow Karl you've got some nads on ya mate! I was cringing for you as it didn't look great at half halftime but as the saying goes alls well that ends well except for the finger lol great watch as always
Haha I think stupid is the word mate😂 but I thought if I can do it then others can. No point waiting until I've being practicing 10 years and have a grands worth of Dovetail tools to demonstrate its possible to get decent results. Thank as always mate.
Great to watch. Got my own dovetails to cut tommorow so hopefully get them neater than last time.
Brilliant it would be great to see your results mate.
Great introduction to dovetails. Thanks for sharing it all and looked great at the end.
Thanks Cliff that's really appreciated. 😁
Well done Karl, looks great!
Cheers mate that's greatly appreciated.
Great job karl nice and neat even better when the finish went on
Makes all the difference doesn't it John after a sanding and a bit of finish. Cheers mate 😊
This was excellent Karl and it looked a lot better sanded and with some oil on it. I’m sure too many people get disheartened when they look at some videos, thinking they Have to have a £250 Tennon saw and a 5year apprenticeship behind them.
Your showing that woodwork can be open to all. I like it mate. 👍🏾
Thank you Ashley that means a lot. I hope you had a good Christmas and New year mate?
No problem bud and yes Christmas was good and I hope yours was too. Stayed out of the workshop and spent time with the Family.
Week off next week as I turn 50 so I will Mostly be knee deep in sawdust 👌🏾
@@eldoradocraftsman3733 ye I did the same I had a full five days off 😊 fifty congratulations mate.
Loving this channel! Just proves you don't need expensive tools to do great work.
Granted expensive tools may last longer and stay sharper for longer, however it's the person on the end of them that make the difference!
Thank you so much Kevin, 😊 you might be interested to know I only record and edit all my videos on my phone 😂 I'm definitely budget but do my very best to try make my channel decent 😊😊
@@karlpopewoodcraft Honestly mate, for me it's what made your channel stand out. It just makes woodworking accessible to people that may not have a huge budget to buy the biggest and best tools! You can do a cracking job with the tools you have and work your way up.
Excellent job mate, keep 'em coming👌
@@kevinsmith-dn1px Thanks Kevin that's really nice to hear 😊
Nice one Karl... HNY matey
Cheers mate happy new year., 😊
Typical been called into work on call out ahhhhhhhh will watch fully when I get back cheers karl
Bloody hell 😩 what's your job mate?
@@karlpopewoodcraft I work on utilities now
Not easy are they! Good effort Karl.
Cheers mate, definitely fun trying and hopefully when I purchase a dovetail saw I'll improve more. Happy New year mate.
@@karlpopewoodcraft Try doing dovetails in softwood. You need a really soft touch, asd the tearout all around can be soul destroying. Just as you think you've done some good work, boom, a softwood grenade goes off and f**ks the whole joint up.
@@essentialhandyman tell me about it mate, I've been practicing all week with Pine, I wouldn't go near spruce mind for dovetails 😂 I've been using pine on the dovetail jig this weekend and it's gone OK with a bit of tearout.
Haha you make it look so simple 😂. But simple enough that I am going to try them myself. So thanks for another great video Karl. 👍
Thanks Craig, ye definitely try mate it's fun no matter what the result and the more you practise the better they get.
Happy New Year Karl. I look forward to more content on your new channel “Surgery at Home with Karl Pope”
Happy New year Ross, 😩😂 didn't realise for ages I was bleeding all over the workpiece 🤣😢
My comment is missing ?
Hi Fred sorry I'm confused 🤔 comment? Oh you have joi the membership group I see a little badge next to your comment 😊
No I see what you mean now when I click on the notification bell I see your comment about the video but then when I choose to read it, it disappears. I'll look into it mate. 😏
@@karlpopewoodcraft No prob mate, just wanted to check that you saw it. Fred
@@Fred16721 youtube weirdness 😏
Thanks
No worries Cindy have you attempted to cut some handmade dovetails yet?
@@karlpopewoodcraft yes I made a dovetail box with a pyography design on the lid. I think
It's crap. Its a paralleligram. But everyone else thinks it's great. I've even got my first commission to build a tarot card box. I'm waiting for the picture so I can see if I can burn the design on the lid.
The box I made out of scrap wood, sliced it, gued it together for the base and lid. I had some 2002 varnish from the £shop and I scrounged the hinges but I did buy the 8 screws from amason. I've got picture's of it. But don't know how to attach it. If you can tell me how I'll show you but my kids have been rather lax in my education re:photos.
My daughter only showed me uTube last year. Im no spring chicken. 2 gran kids. 😏😊
@@cindyharrison4191 haha you can send them on Instagram or Facebook Cindy, ye it would be great to see your work. You should start an Instagram page and post pictures of your work 😊
