- I Made £799 $950 Selling Four Old Scaffold boards, the way I did this is by making them old Spruce boards into a table top. woodworking is a great way to make money as a side hustle why not try it. let me know what you think would make a good project to make from some old Scaffold boards.

I have seen a lot of woodworking videos of people building tables. No one mentioned to swap the boards and look on the grain. Great tip! 👍

Great build Karl, the bow ties look really clean. Thanks for pointing out the difficulties with glue-ups and finishes, both my biggest problems. Never knew ply edge was so strong! Cheers mate.

Thanks mate, i possibly could of explained that during the video, the sheet of ply was to large for my saw capacity so a short cut was the lazy option really I should have used the tracksaw. I expected the kick back as the peice of ply has no forward pressure and the only way was back,, woops. That's why I stood right over on the left, not a good example to set though 😪
@@karlpopewoodcraft standing to the left to avoid a potential kickback, that shows another lesson / safety tip in itself, which is good.👍 I prefer it when mistakes are shown and not hidden. Especially when it comes to something like table saw safety. I watched a different video recently with someone using a tablesaw on a wood / epoxy projects. Crikey. I was surprised he didn't injure himself during that video and that he's actually still alive. Another doing fractal burning and literally throwing water towards the area of wood the prongs were inserted into. ⚡⚡⚰🪦
I'm going to buy a tablesaw shortly so I can expand my own repertoire of wood and epoxy working. I think the half dozen or so tablesaw safety videos I've watched are the most important ones I'll have watched all year.

Ye Spruce actually has a lovely grain it's just notoriously unstable. Get in them site skips mate.

Turned out great, Karl. The plywood insert seems like a good replacement idea for the c-channel iron plates that some other makers use 👍😁

You wouldn't want to do that mate with a table, you would need to find a timber supplier with thicker boards. Thank you 😊

Hi Jeff, probably didn't show up on camera, and I didn't video it, but there was cement lumps all over a couple that needed chiselling off and cement dust was brushing off foe ever that's why I ran then through the thicknesser.

Looks great mate. I’m no expert, but does the top plate (by which I mean the part you’ve bolted to the underside of the table) of the steel legs not do the same thing as the plywood in terms of preventing cupping? Not having a pop, genuinely curious as to why the plywood strips are is needed with these legs. Have you had tables like this cup before or is it more a “belt and braces” thing? Cheers 👍🏻
Cheers Ben, I've seen many table ruined by the timber cupping, main reason due to moisture content being way to high, Spruce is a notoriously unstable timber and absorbs moisture very easily due to the open grain. If this table where to cup and not have the plywood laminates it would rip the screws straight out the x frame leg structure no problem. The laminations are not necessary but they add a layer of protection. Number 1 make sure your timber is dry under 12% at the least.

Do you ever have any bother with the water based clear coat ? Had a few bad experiences ourselves when the customer used a house hold kitchen cleaner on their table and reacted with the finish, it become a very tacky consistency. This happened a few times and one job was a cafe who we supplied 7 tables to and every one reacted to their post covid cleaning regime. Now we tend to stay clear of water based and use polyurethane clear coat instead. I find the poly a lot more durable and can be more forgiving with cleaning.
Your spot on mate with that sticky result! I always say only use soap and water no horrible chemicals. Every restaurant I go in now has sticky tables due to these chemicals. Even the poloy goes that way eventually. Always warn the customer and say after cleaning with chemicals wipe down with warm soapy water.
Ps I always give my customers a cleaning aid memoir. I even say not to use furniture polish, I say use soap water on a damp cloth and then a nice natural beeswax.
@@karlpopewoodcraft yeah we do the same now and warn the end user about solvents and the like , some have said “ oh we just used soapy water” when we know they didn’t from the result of the tacky finish. That is something I noticed myself that so many restaurant “rustic tables” are always tacky and you usually see the staff with a bottle of spray after a table of customers have left spray it down with what I can only guess is a solvent.
@@thewoodworker1703 Ye typical and wanting you to re finish them for free, cheeky gits. These type of customers we don't need, the lying type, Break something from negligence or improper care and as you to fix it for free.

Hi Karl and followers , John here for the 1st time viewing vids. ( Sunderland ) I'm a 64 yr old kitchen / bathroom/bedroom installer , about to retire and take up some small rustic furniture projects to sell and to keep my experienced hands in so I can top up my garbage pension due in April. £180/wk 😮💨 ( I guess this is my reward for 50yrs of heavy graft ).
I'm considering of joining up , but a tad hesitant to committing to monthly fees. Questions
.1 What level would you suggest for newbie bronze /silver/gold or vip supporter .
.2 I've only viewed a few vids upto now, with my respect have done any rustic/industrial type projects. As I'm gearing up in my largeish shed 6.5 mtrs x 3.5 mtrs With Axminister band saw /table saw and my accumulated cordless Milwaukee gear.

Was it a custom peice for someone or was this just a you had the boards and decided make it to sell it and if it was the 2nd one how and were did u market it to get that much as especially in my area don't think I'd get that for scaffold board table. 🏴👍 Ps check your email
Hi Michael this one was for my family, I then took some nice photos and put them on Instagram and Facebook/website. I did supply the table with a bench and 4 chairs. The chairs I bought from a reclaimed shop, for £30 old oak farmhouse type and I painted them gray. I charged 50 per chair, 150 bench and 450 for the table. 800 quid altogether. I've sold 4 this year like this. Lastly I don't advertise on Facebook Market Place it not good for this, also Market them as reclaimed Spruce boards, give lots of choices in regards to wood dye, ie walnut dark oak rustic pine etc, chairs again paint choices, also offer 4ft 5ft 6ft etc this is what makes it worth their hard earned money, it's very custom and the customer loves the choices makes them feel special. 😀

Can I ask why you don't go through market place with these? Think we need another masterclass video on setting up and selling items from u! 😀 Pricing is my hardest thing as you'll no people in UK don't really want pay the money for the quality it's worth they'd rather buy everything from b&m or IKEA or Argos or sommit. 👍🏴
@@michaelwillson6847 Ye that's why I stay clear of Market Place because its full of people wanting something for nothing. Honestly once you manage to sell a few bits people talk and recommend, there is people out there that want to either support local or have money to spend on decent stuff. If you price to low it puts them off because they think it will be cheap rubbish like from Argos etc. When I make furniture I brag to the customer about my drawer runners being able to hold 35kg and that they cost £10 each, they love it because they've all had IKEA runners that break after 2 weeks. I say if these break just call me and I'll be straight round, never had a call yet.
Keep the focus on quality and custom made mate it does sell, I'm not saying you will be rich I'm not, but I'm not working for the man either I'm working for myself family and Jakob, we make the rewards for hard work not someone else.
@@karlpopewoodcraft yea a must say a can totally get that a hated working for the man I'm in no way a trained joiner or any sorts of craftsman in this side of it am an ex 14year professional chef and heavy machine operator for a sawmill but my whole kitchen got built out live edge sycamore through good friend mine whose an amazing furniture and cabinet maker and through circumstances this year am now at home and love doing this and that's why a wanna persue it. My problem right now is getting in the door with certian things through restaurants cafes but FB is nearly live which am hopefull will help then yes fingers crossed word will spread.
