I have been to Sanibel Island. Didn’t have to get up that early. We had more shells than we could take home. Huge Welk shells to micro mini shells of every kind. We go to Mexico also. I have many “Sea Hearts” and “Deer Eyes”. They say “you will return to Mexico” if you find them. They were right! My MIL lives there. Love searching for goodies on the beach. Have even found a “note in a bottle” too!
I think my brain will finally break my first day on the beach when I finally get moved down there. Looking in the rack line, going in the water, just picking everything up to take home, LMBO. I think that first day, I'll find me a good rackline and plant my bottom, and just get tinys all day. That way I'm not running round like a chicken with my head cut off. Thank you Beach Buddy for always being here every Sunday. What a way to start off the Wacky, Work, Week. YOU ROCK SHARMON!!!!
It's so fun living here. And the beach feels like my second home. It's been amazing learning about the animals and seashells and weather and tides...
If you like it even half as much as me, you'll be in heaven!!
My husband and I got to visit Honeymoon Beach State Park last week. I got to spend 4 lovely hours on the pet beach before my hips gave out. Lol! Back home now with bronchitis and longing to be at the beach again.
I had the pleasure of saving 2 sea anemones and a giant Atlantic prickly cockles. I gently returned them to knee deep water. And, I collected 2 hag stones after learning about them for a lovely local.
I met a local up at Honeymoon Island too that was telling me about the druzy quartz that can be found up there. The beach draws so many of us collectors! I'm glad you were able to experience that place for yourself!
As far as finding a live Skate Egg. One time I found one and put in my Saltwater aquarium and the baby skate DID hatch which I kept for a year before I let it go.
As a landlocked Tennessean I live vicariously thru your videos. I would be torn between shelling and fishing though. Love your voice and thanks for this little window of a different life.
That sunrise was just stunning!!🌅I have never seen the sun and moon like it was there, that was really cool to see them both illuminated at once, very beautiful. Thanks for sharing, wonderful video as usual.🐚🪸🐚
I would keep everything. Wishing to go shelling from Columbia, Illinois. But watching you helps me relax. 🥰
I chuckle every time I watch a video with that opening segment, with the Florida fighting conch, and he tries to whap you. He’s just a feisty little dude. Love the sunrise. So peaceful. And amazing all those eggshells on the beach as well. Thank you for sharing with us.
I really need to stop having expectations. The beach ALWAYS manages to surprise me!
the array of color in the scallops is amazing
Thanks for picking up that litter!
Love the treasures you find. I have a vase full of shells that I look at often and am amazed that a creature can make such beauties. Thanks for sharing with us. I can’t walk very much anymore and I love your videos ❤️
Thanks for coming to the beach with me!!!
I love beaches so every Sunday I tune in to see what you’ve found Sharmon.
I found a mermaid purse on the west coast of Cape Breton Island years ago.
It was split and oddly I found a $20 bill a few feet away.
Those mermaids are just throwing money around.
😂
I'll say! I'm going to hope a mermaid leaves me a winning lottery ticket!
Nice trip ! Lots of shells ❤ thanks for the ride 😊
Great fun the mermaid purses are amazing thank you 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💖💖💖💖
💜
Interesting that the mermaid purses aren’t common down there. We seaside in North Wildwood NJ and they’re everywhere. Last year we even got to swim with some actual skates! They’re super curious and circled all around us. Very cool experience. Hope you find one you can keep one day!
We get the cow nose rays down here and they will swim up the coast in a big pod. They are super neat critters. I'm glad you got to swim with some!
Just love those calicos!! At present, I’m watching a beachcomber at John D. MacArthur state park. Oh, please go there for a mini vacation. She is picking up extraordinary shells. I thought she was in Australia 😮😂❤❤
I am going to keep an eye on the weather and I'll get myself over there at some point in the near future!
Beautiful shells 🐚! Pretty neat to see the moon in the morning & the sun rising! I use to scuba dive back in day. I had shells I collected. I just loved them. Unfortunately they were lost in one of my moves. I had them in Beautiful glass jars! It broke my heart ❤ I guess some day I will have to go to Florida & collect shells! You have wonderful assortment! ❤ I really enjoy see your adventures!
Note to self: If I move, all the shells in glass will get packed in my car so I can personally move them. That is so awful to hear that yours were lost. Especially since you're a diver. I can only imagine the amazing specimens you had found. The good news is there are plenty of shells here just waiting for a new home 😃
Hi Charmin! Love the scallops on Sanibel! They are gorgeous!! Those skate eggs or mermaid purses exit through the ends of the sacs. If you squeeze them gently like a coin purse you can see if it opens. I had a gentleman show me this trick when I was visiting Marco Beach and found a few. Thanks again for the adventure!
Hi Sharmon! Well, what a nice trip to Sanibel and what a special haul. I can't believe all those gorgeous scallops. I must go to Sanibel when I go to Florida. I always feel stunned when I see the beauty of calico scallops and the varieties of patterns and colors. By the way, how do you tell the difference between calicos, bay scallops and rough scallops? I understand how one would ID a prickly scallop. I loved all your finds tonight. Wow....those mermaid purses. I've never heard of them before let alone see one. Thanks for the education. I agree with the person who said that your show is her favorite part of her Sunday evening. It's mine too. When I was a child I used to watch Wild Kingdom and Walt Disney on Sunday evenings. Now I have SWF Beach Life! And you're teaching me a lot too. Have a wonderful week!
Those were my 2 favorites! The Wonderful World of Disney and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. I am honored to be your Sunday evening entertainment for about 30 minutes 🙏🏼
Lol! I loved your subtle comment on confusion between blueberries and strawberries! 😂I appreciate your humility!
That was for you, me, and the others that noticed my mix up with my breakfast on the East Coast 😂
@@SWFBeachLife low blood sugar perhaps?😆 I cracked up when you stated it twice though.
You’re human, mix ups happen! ❤️❤️
Hi Sharmon! Another awesome Sunday at the beach! Those scallops on Sanibel are so beautiful. The mermaid purses were like perfect. Hopefully they will hatch. I have never found one. I think everyone I subscribe to knows how much I love the Egg Cockle. Don't know, they are just special to me and that one was beautiful. Thank you for the sweet adventure!! Have a great week!!
Thank you! You too!
Night shelling is my favorite at Sanibel. Have found some great shells that way! Thanks for another great video.
I love artfully broken pieces of shells and I’ve used a rotary tool to soften the jagged edges and I think it looks great.
Need the beach😊
Beautiful finds as always! 😊.
Thank you! 😊
Sanibel beaches are just gorgeous and your shell haul was beautiful! I’ve never found a mermaid’s purse either, but I think you were correct about them not being empty…they looked pretty plump on camera. I thoroughly enjoyed this beach walk, thanks for taking us along.
Thank you so much for watching!! 🙏🏼 I appreciate you!!
Fabric printed from photograph of condensed shell collage would be great for blinds, cushions, lampshades..
Dear Sharmon,
What a great haul of shells!😍
I can hardly type because I'm in a lot of pain. I have broken my right shoulder and probably also my right wrist after a fall in my house. Get an X ray on my wrist tomorrow.
Have a wonderful week!
Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤, Ilona
Ilona I am so sorry to hear you fell and you managed to break a few things in the process. I am so, so sorry!! I also fell while I was filming last week but I didn't break anything. I did manage to scrape my leg though. I hope you are going to be okay. Sending you extra doses of healing and sunshine this week ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm so sorry about your dad. I feel for u. Your voice gives u away. Love ya.
My favorite part of Sunday evening 😊! I love those beautiful scallops and of course the common nutmeg with its beads and twirl inside 🥰.
Beautiful scallops shells 🏝️What a beautiful time to be on the beach with the moonlight 🌝
We just left Sanibel! Went there just because of you! Had a blast. Didn’t find the big shells like I thought but was able to knock of some of my bucket list shells!!
That's awesome!! It's been really hit or miss so I'm glad you got some of what you are looking for!
Found some great treasures!! I LOVE paper figs! Have a great week! See you Sunday! XOXO
Thank you for picking up the olive. They are my favorites almond with the spiney jewel boxes. 😁
Loved the Texas Lightening Welks & the paper shell figs ?? Looks like the Angels had a tough time in the winds. Lol
And the following week I kept finding the wings over and over. I love the beach and how it keeps me guessing what's going to be out there!!
Beautiful sunrise
Thank you So much for the early morning walk !! You had a great day !!
That first scallop was a fantastic find. Great walk on the beach thanks.
Always love to see your great finds. Thank you for taking us with you! Interesting Skate eggs..
Wow! Your dedication to the seashells hunt is awesome!
Thank You Sharmon for another trip to the Beach 🏖️ !
I look forward to seeing what you find week to week and where. So until next Sunday, enjoy all the things that make you smile 😊😎
Loved the shell identification lesson, what treasures!
Love your videos … never a doubt in my mind that each will have something new to learn.
I do, however, worry for your safety when you go shelling in the dark. Hope you have a companion out of camera sight with you.
I am blown away that you never found a skate egg pod. I stumbled upon one on the Seaside Oregon beach this past year. I was so proud of myself for knowing what it was …. Hubby was impressed too.
You don't need to worry about me! I am always really careful on my adventures. I'm pretty surprised I had never found a mermaid purse either. They were really beautiful and I can see why people would want to keep them. Yay for you knowing what it was when you found yours!
Gorgeous scallops!
Thanks for helping me identify my "mystery shells!" Didn't know that Baby's Ears were part of the gastropods family.
Mermaid Perse is a hourse shoe crab egg, pretty sure. We have not been there since the hurricane. Hope to be back this year. Great video!
I just discovered your channel and I love it! I collected shells on Sanibel Island as a teenager and have samples of all the species you show. Thanks for the wonderful memories! I find them all beautiful.
Welcome abroad! I share a new video of my shell hunt every Sunday!
Wonderful shells 🐚 🥰
Thank you for sharing just subscribed to spend time beach combing with you again, you know lots so I’m learning too!
Welcome aboard! You will learn A LOT! The beach is the best classroom ever!
Love all the mermaid purses c😅ngrats
The Latin name for apple murex is a derivative of French for apple: pomme. Both Latin and French are Romance languages, so there are similarities in French to Latin and vice versa. Latin is pomum, hence pomme, or apple. 🍏 I hope that helps you remember names more easily in the future. (I hope I didn’t confuse. )
I know potato in French is "apple of the Earth" (pomme de terre) so that makes complete sense!!! That will likely help me remember the name. Thank you so much!!! (I love that I have smart Beach Friends 😂)
My favorite shells are calico scallops and lightning whelks. Love them.
Hi Sharmon - I had a great day at Pass-A-Grille on Thursday after Wednesday's storm. Loads of banded tulips and lettered olives. So many live critters too - it was so exciting. Got a beautiful true tulip too.
I find those skate egg casings in New Jersey often. Great vid of beautiful Sanibel and thanks for the parking text info
I will get up to Pass-A-Grille one of these days! I have so many people telling me that place is great. I wish I had found cool stuff at the beach when I lived here. Maybe I would have started my channel a long time ago!!
Just go back from or shelling trip at Sanibel, thanks to you we had great trip shelling with the twins on Paradise shell tour, got a bunch of shells, Thanks Charmin !! They enjoy your channel as well
I love watching your videos! I’ve been watching with my granddaughters, too. We’ll be visiting the OBX in Sept together. I have a shell tour on my bucket list for my next big birthday!
I have not shelled the Carolina's yet but I'd like to. I hope you find lots of souvenirs!
at 17:00 the hole is at the umbone, sometimes also called the umbo. The umbones together form the swollen beak of the bivalve, the earliest part of the shell that sticks out.
Thank you once again teacher 🙏🏼
Thank you Sharmon, lovely walk on the beach! I didn't like shelling in the dark the when I did, so haven't since, more power to you!!
I am done with night shelling! I think I have enough practice to know what to expect should I want to go out there in the dark - LOL!
I'm in Florida today! I have had such fun collecting seashells. Most of mine have been itty bitty, but I'm still thrilled to be out looking and collecting!
I hope you find yourself some great souvenirs!
This is the first vlog I have seen of yours and you make shelling so educational and interesting! The nine armed sea star, mermaids purse and all your pretty colorful shells.
I have one more class and I will be a full-fledged Florida Master Naturalist. There is so much to learn about this amazing state!
Hello, Beach Angel! Sorry to be oh, so late this week! It's a long story...
I hope nobody ever wants me to get up at "oh God!" o'clock to go shelling, unless it's on Kice Island!
Now, that's the prettiest scallop I've seen lately! 😍
When I lived on Pensacola Beach, (yeah, I know, why'd I leave it? I felt that I had no choice, as I fell deeply in love with a mountain loving man and I chose to go with him to his home in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and, eventually, to East Tennessee!)
Anyway, I was given a big section of a fishing net by someone and I stretched it across the ceiling of my little beach cottage and filled it with the different gifts I got from the other mermaids, such as their cast off purses, dried out starfish, sea urchins, beautiful shells, dead seahorses and the lovely crucifix fishes. I left my net and it's collection with a dear friend when I moved away from the sea and have regretted it ever since!
Alas, my dear husband has gone ahead of me on another journey and I find myself longing for my home by the sea. I can no longer live in the sea, but spending time beside the sea is almost as good...
One day, perhaps, this Lost Mermaid will return to her beloved home by the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. It is my fond hope that my dream will come true...
You, dear Beach Angel, had a glorious day collecting shells! I am almost jealous, but quite inspired and homesick!
Much love to you and all my beachy friends from Rebecca, The Lost Mermaid 🧜♀️ ❤
That net sounds lovely. I have some cigar boxes I want to decorate (AFTER the shell mirror) and I'd like to incorporate some sort of tiny net on the box.
And I've had a few "memory" jogs lately and I love how our brains keep our special moments tucked away until something stirs the edges and allows the memory to unfold.
I am hoping for a calm summer, with NO hurricanes, so the time of year to worry is almost here. It's the dance we do with living so close to the sea! ❤️
so many great calico scallops!
Wow, some of those are very shiny 😻
Wow! I can't believe all the whelk egg casings that washed up! We had the same experience here after that wind event. Not great shelling. But I would NOT call your trip to Sanibel "meh". You found some beauties! Hope to get all the way up to the north end tomorrow... Thanks Sharmon!❤️ xxoo 😊
In my head there were piles and piles of shells waiting for me! I thought for sure that wind event was the one that would give me some piles to go through. Next time I can't get out to shell a good wind event I'll remember they aren't all fabulous producers!
What a gorgeous haul. Thank you for sharing. Hugs from Johannesburg south Africa
Thank you for watching!!! 🙏🏼
Your videos relax me Apollo much!!! I want to move to Florida!
Another lovely video! So many beautiful scallops! And I got tickled by the blueberry/strawberry reference. 😁 Thank you for sharing!
I just wanted to confirm I really do know the difference 🤣
@@SWFBeachLife 😊
Beautiful scallops !
Id love to see your collection in your home! As a child I collected shells in Cuba. I’m 80 now but I have loved shells all my life. To me they represent proof of the Divine. Do show your collection.
Your wish is my command!!
ruclips.net/video/5vq9DJbCJDA/видео.html
Thanks for looking for my rounded bits. I would had a hard time putting those neat mermaid purses back, lol they were awesome.
I have rounded bits!!! I want to pick out a few for myself and the rest are going on Etsy - hopefully later this week!!
@@SWFBeachLife yippee! My etsy store us campgalcreations.
I love paper figs!! I understand your feelings about broken angel wings. That’s how I feel every time I see our state seashell, the Scotch bonnet.
I'm pretty much screaming anytime I see a scotch bonnet. They are SO prized down here!!
@@SWFBeachLife They are so prized up here too. It’s hard to find them in tact though. They are so pretty!
Dang, you got up early this time Sharmon! Too bad you weren't rewarded with a large lightning whelk (bump in the sand) for your dedication. It's fun finding the unusual stuff like the skate egg casing. Thank you for shelling for us! ❤😊
I was on Sanibel after that storm! I found so so many live banded tulips and lightning whelks! I took pictures but left the live animals in the water. I was down towards the lighthouse.
Beautiful shells as always...did you say tinies?...can't wait!❤
I love tinies too 🥰🥰🥰
Sharmon u do get up early! Ha! I am sure that is fun to explore! Thnx for the walk my friend!
I got quite the jump on my day! 😃
How do you display all of your treasures? Wonderful video, thanks so much for sharing!
99% of my shells are in glass. I am going to put out a video soon about my collection so I can show you my shells and how I store them.
I have found several of the mermaid purse skate egg cases. They have never been empty. I always put them back in hopes they make it and hatch. Never have been lucky enough to find an empty one. I do know what they look like though because I have seen hatched ones in beach ecology centers. You can definitely tell hatched from still occupado. It is possible to see the baby inside by shining a light, but it has to be a very very bright and spot-light, not dispersed light like the sun. Sometimes if the baby is big enough and active enough, though, you can actually feel it moving around in the egg casing if you hold it in your hand. I found one at Orange Beach, Alabama in February that I could feel moving a little bit. It literally washed up at my feet and I showed my friend and then walked out into the freezing water about three feet and gently shoved it out on a wave.🤞 Hopefully it’s a happy little skate baby swimming free by now.
I suspected the occupants weren't done cooking yet. The casing was beautiful though. Maybe I'll get to see a little creatures squirming around in one in the future 🙏🏼
Take it all! ❤
clearnose skate makes those mermaid purses. or sharks I guess, I did a search on it❤ I saw a video that said sea stars can live long out of water they suffocate and need the water so always put them in the water even if the tide is coming in or they will probably die. Just FYI, I have been learning alot lately about shells and sealife.❤
My favorite place to stay on Sanibel is reopening later this year. Since Ian, we’ve tried other places in FL, but it’s not the same. Sanibel has my ❤.
It really is such a special island ❤️
Hello. Good Evening 😊😊Happy Sunday 💞💞
Happy Sunday!
@@SWFBeachLife Thank You 🤗🤗
We had the opportunity to be on Sanibel on Easter Sunday. Wow, didn’t know Bowman’s Beach was so huge!
It's so big it will take you about 10 minutes to get from the parking lot to the beach! I hope you had fun!
@@SWFBeachLife We thoroughly enjoyed it! My kids were keeping their eyes peeled for you. I said you go to the beach reeeaaalllyyy early, so you probably wouldn’t be there. 😄
I lived there for 30 years...thank you.
If you get a very large jar with a lid, you can fill it up with those egg casings. Stuff them in the jar. It's a nice display, and you won't smell them with the lid on tight.
I have some dried out ones I was going to try to sell so other people can have those itty bitty horse conch shells too. If I do decide to display them a jar will be prefect!
I wrote a paper on mermaid purses, it was so cool to see it up close.
It was beautiful!
That first special Scallop reminds me of an Indian headdress. Beautiful!
I also had high expectations for bigger shells after so many days of NW winds. Spent Sunday morning at West Gulf. I found the same shells you did along with 2 alphabet cones and 2 flat scallops. No big shell piles there either. My guess is that the waves weren’t strong enough (storms needed) to bring in the big shells.
I also pay attention to a surf forecast so I can watch the wave heights. I'm still learning! You lucky duck getting 2 flats!!!
Soothing sounds of nature and one paranoid little bird, "Hey Lady, stop following me!"
🤣 I know!
Sanibel is my favorite place
my aunts place on Sanibel is finally fixed after the hurricane, I can't wait to go shelling there again
YAY!
Not the big “bumps” you were hoping for but still a beautiful day at the beach and some gorgeous shells.❤ would you mind telling me/us which tide app you use? I’ve got a couple but they aren’t that good…Tia. Another great trip to Sanibel with you, thanks for bringing us along and have a wonderful week..❤️🐚❤️🐚
I love the tide app I have!! Its free and I showed it in a previous episode: ruclips.net/video/skpXEeeU9ZU/видео.html
Thanks so much , I don’t know how I missed it last week…🤣🤣😘
Charmin what you call the mermaid purse we also called them the devil's purse in a lot of times if you hear it jingling in the inside it's the sand that you hear it is already hatched the animal in the inside and is no longer alive and it is a keeper I used to belong to a seashell collection company competition many years ago and that was one of the things that we had to find and learned a lot about it so you could have kept them they are very rare and very hard to find next time you find something like that just shake it real easy and if you hear that sound you know that you can keep it
Thanks for this! The ones I found were so glossy and in such good shape I couldn't take them - just in case!
I always have a bag for garage picked up on the beach. Wish everyone had one with them.
I usually just put the garbage in my shell bag and separate everything when I get home. Unless it's an unusually bad day (like this day) in which case I use one of the plastic bags I carry for just such an occasion! 😃
I've noticed 🤔 when shelling certain 🐚 are in clusters of the same species. Is that normal?
Yes! Certain snails like to eat the same thing so they tend to hang out together. Especially during spring or mating season 😃
Omgoodness just found your channel.
Who knew watching someone shell hunting would be so much fun!
What is your favorite beach, one you highly recommend to find shells?
Tell me about it! I thought I was going to the beach and the next thing I know I have a RUclips channel about beachcombing!!
Favorite beaches...well there's Sanibel (I like all the beaches), Fort Myers Beach, Lovers Key, Little Hickory, Keewaydin, and then Tigertail, Marco Island and the 10k islands. Oh, I liked Honeymoon Island too. Well, let's just say I really like shelling in Southwest Florida and there are some other beaches I've visited that I like too 😃
Welcome aboard!
I am 2 hours away from Sanibel, so don’t come often. I’m luck to be close to another beach that has great shells too! Love your videos! I’ve been finding lots of hag stones lately. Do you find them?
Yes, we get hag stones but I haven't picked one up in a while 😃
My favorites are the scallops.
How interesting to see so many kinds of shells and you do seem to know a lot of them. I do hope though that this does not get people to go there to take away more shells for their “collections.” Here in the Philippines, there are reminders in our beaches to “take away only memories, and leave only footprints”.
in Florida it’s legal and no problem to collect shells on public beaches…
I know not all beaches are the same, but the beaches here in Florida have plenty of shells. As long as the shell is empty, it's perfectly fine to collect it!
We were just down on Sanibel a cpl of weeks ago and it broke my heart to see so many businesses completely gone 🥹especially our favorite the Sunset Grill 😔
There are days when I still can't believe it even happened. The entire island was about 12 feet under water. Hard to wrap my head around, even living through it. But some places are back and new places will probably open. It will never be the same but I still love that island ❤️🐚
@@SWFBeachLife I agree , will always love it 😊😊😊
Often if you want to know if the skate/ray/shark case is viable, you might be able to hold your flashlight behind it and seeing if the baby moves.
Do you ever shell on the panhandle of Florida? Vacationing near Rosemary Beach and wondered if we would find many shells? Can’t imagine it can compare to what we’ve found on Sanibel!
I have not been to the panhandle yet but I hope to see it one of these days. I actually want to visit all the beaches in FL but Destin and Navarre are on my list.
