It's my favorite Sunday evening time. I just returned from the east coast. Went to my daughter's favorite shell pile. It had been worked on, but it was still okay. I actually found a piece of junonia! Can you believe that, i just felt like i might. I don't know if i will ever find a whole one, but it was exciting. I also found a very calciated apple murex that is huge. I also got to Honeymoon State Park and thought of you the whole time. My grandchildren were impressed by my knowledge of shells, which you have taught us through sharing your beach time with us. Thank you, and I still hope I will get to meet you on a beach. Thanks❣️🦋❣️🐚🐚🐚🌊🌊

I LOVE this episode! I am so glad that you did some night shelling - the best kind of shelling experience, IMO ☺
There's a magic, and serenity that exists on the beach before the sun rises, and you captured it quite well. Loved the yellow Horse Conch, and that HUGE Colorful Moon.

Thanks for another lovely walk. The information you give on your channel has shown me where to shell on your coast. So thank you. This weekend I attended my first Sanibel shell show and it was outstanding. But the highlight highlight of my time in your area was spent walking Lighthouse beach, Blind Pass beach and Ft. Meyers beach. SWF undeniably has some of the most beautiful shelling beaches anywhere. Hope you got to the show! Judy from Boca

Hello from the Catskill & Capital region areas of NY. We just got home from a long weekend in Florida for the Sanibel Shell Show. We were up early for sunrise shelling every day. It was glorious to see. We drove to Marco Island to take a boat out to Keewayden. Found some great stuff there. The other days we went to Sanibel. The shelling wasn’t the greatest but we didn’t care. One morning there was a small deceased hammerhead shark on the beach. We’d never seen one before. The shell show was a great experience. We will be back, SWF is one of our favorite places.

The nutmegs always remind me of snake skin, isn’t that weird. Sanibel is coming back so we’ll and I am delighted to see so much traffic going to Sanibel. Means people are supporting the island so, hopefully, her economy will continue to recover. Lovely stroll, gorgeous shells. Not bad was it!! Hugs and stay safe - me lurgi has almost gone thanks Heavens. xx

I think a lot of the traffic is from contractors who are working on the homes still. We are going to look pretty good by next winter but we're still aways away from things being back to normal. That being said the beaches are getting more sand and they are looking great! Well, when the sun is up and I can see them that is 😉

I went to Sanabel for the first time, around 1981/82, with my parents, and it was the most amazing experience. There were drifts of shells several feet high, and many feet across, and in between those drifts the shells were at least a foot deep everywhere else. I sat all day, each day, just digging down through the drifts of shells, finding the ones I liked the best. There were lots of turkey wings, paper figs, welks, conchs, shark eyes, scallops, shark teeth, sand dollars, paper figs, apple mirex, olives, augers, angel wings, kitten paws, nutmeg (which I didn't know the name of back then) and so many others that I can't remember them all. There were horseshoe crabs and those cute little spotted orange crabs (I can't remember what they were called) and clusters of fiddler crabs walking around. Truly amazing! Luckily, even though I was going home by plane, my parents were going home in a motor home, so they happily took my treasures home with them for me. I was excited to show it all to my husband, but when we went back around 2015, it was nothing like I remember. There were about a quarter the number of shells as that you show on this video, if even that many. And there weren't the variety of shells either. I was so disappointed. I would normally have still been thrilled, had I not gone that other time, and saw how many there were back then. My stepfather said that the high drifts of shells were always there like that, which was why he wanted me to see it back then. He knew how much I would enjoy it. And he was right.

I hear stories of what Sanibel used to be like with these huge piles of shells. I wish I had been able to experience that but I'll take what I can get! I am also kind of glad I didn't grow up here. I don't know if I would love and appreciate the beaches and shells if I grew up surrounded by them.

I wish the temperatures were as nice here (Tacoma, WA) as you had on Sanibel. I went to "my" waterfront beach on Saturday, only the 2nd time this year. Didn't find too many of my jingles, but I did manage to collect another 3 pounds, 4.7 oz. of garbage to add to the 2 pounds, 11.2 oz. from mid-February. (Yes, we apparently have a lot of people here who don't respect the beach. Butt our ocean beaches aren't this bad!)
What a lovely time you had, in the dark and watching that sunrise! Thank you, as always, Sharmon.

Way to go getting that garbage off the beach! I found lots of garbage at the beach yesterday. I picked up as much as I could and I was just bummed that other people walk right past it, so we have those types too over here. At least I didn't have to brave any crazy weather. While the shells have been slower, the temperature has been warmer. We need a good storm (not a hurricane!!!) to mix things up for us again.

Your videos are taking me longer and longer to view bc I find myself pausing the video to see what I can see before I become enchanted by your find. It's fun.
Question: why are slipper shells attached to empty shells? Are they eating the calcium in the shell? Are they using the shell to cover more ground or have more opportunities to filter feed?
Bonus on 1st true tulip! That was a big one. Lack of color from fading or is that it's original coloring?
Love love love scallops - bay and calico. Cool to see hinged scallop with different colors on each side. I have to get down to SWF again bc my bucket goal is to fill a glass fish bowl just with gorgeous scallops. ❤ Then travel to East coast for bowls of those candy-looking clams; name will come to me. Having a senior moment.
    Back to video...

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 месяца назад

Slipper shells are just a flatter type of critter. I have never seen a live one not attached to something else! They stack on top of each other for reproduction purposes with the males on top. If a female underneath stops giving off hormones or dies, the males can switch to female! They are quite neat creatures.
The bittersweet clams are the ones that look like candy! 😃
