  • My idea of a great day is spending time at the beach. On this particular day, my husband and I headed back to Sanibel to see what we could find. Once again we were rewarded with some awesome shells. Come with me as I shell on Sanibel - I even included a little quiz this time!

    We used to do alot of shelling and while we lived over in the Philippines we have some pretty large conch shells. My dad used to make these really pretty lamps out of them. They had a nice wood bottom and the stood up pointed side down and he somehow got a bulb in it . They gave off the nicest glow. Good memories.
    Thanks for taking me back so many yrs. My dad's been gone now for 15 yrs and I'm getting old too but I sure do enjoy thinking about the ocean and my dad. Thanks

    I live about 1 hr 45 min away from Sanibel. Do you need to get there really early for good shelling, or would it be about the same at any time of day, just more people on the beach later in the day? I imagine we would want low tide? Not sure worth the expense to stay overnight vs just a day trip. Also, which section? Bowman's Beach or where do you prefer? Thanks for any thoughts and a big thank you for all your beach videos! So fun & very educational!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 года назад

      My favorite times to shell are first thing in the morning, and low tide - preferably both at the same time :) However this time of year the low tide tends to be in the evening, which competes with the evening showers should they be around. My recommendation would be to go to Bowman's and get there early. There's plenty of parking so even if you don't get there first thing you should be able to park ($5 per hour). When I get to the water I walk to the right, toward Blind Pass. I personally don't think you'd need to have an overnight stay and could easily visit as a day trip but that's up to you! :) Thanks so much for watching my videos!

    How do you tell the apple murex and the lace murex apart?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  4 года назад +1

      GREAT QUESTION! The apple murex has a larger opening on the right side, where the lace murex tends to have a smaller one. The juveniles are harder to tell apart. I'll be putting a video together about all the different shells i've found and how to identify them soon!

      Mostly I keep my shells in glass jars, vases and lanterns. I showed my collection in a past video: ruclips.net/video/Afy0jl0smpE/видео.html Then, I put some shells to the side to sell and others to do projects with. I've managed to complete 2 projects thus far. A shell mirror: ruclips.net/video/Mf5SVm8m5n8/видео.html And a shell photo frame: ruclips.net/video/h9UIvqlOzgM/видео.html I have lots of ideas I just need to find more time!

      Karen Gadaleta I haven’t been here in SW Florida for an entire year yet, but it seems to me the winter months bring more shells. That being said, every single weekend brings new and different goodies. Sanibel hasn’t been giving me as many shells as it was a few months ago.

    What's the difference between a crown conch and a fighting conch?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 года назад

      The fighting conch is a very thick, usually brown or orange shell with some bumps on the bottom of the shell. The crowded conch is a much thinner shell, has strips of purple or brown and will sometimes have spikes along the top of the shell. I find both pretty regularly so be sure to watch more videos and you'll learn the difference!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 года назад +1

      @@channingcarmack913 LOL! Well that I can tell you about! I would say it’s about 10-15 minutes to the sand bars and maybe another 5 to get to Dickmans. From there is maybe 20 minutes to paddle over to Kice because Kice to the marina was around 30 minutes total. Everything is pretty close so it’s not THAT bad. That being said, I did have a friend swept out into the gulf and she had to call 911 so pay attention to the tides and winds if you decide to go!
