A favorite saying of mine about raising children (my sons are 17 and 21); You spend about 2 years teaching your kids to walk and talk, and the next 20 or so trying to get them to sit down and listen
The Russian bug Adam referred to is known as "The Thing": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thing_(listening_device) It was embedded in a wooden 'Great Seal of the United States' that was presented by the USSR to the US in 1945. It was discovered accidentally in 1952, only because a British radio operator in the British Embassy accidentally tuned into the transmission frequency of the bug, while it was being monitored by the Russians. Another interesting trivia fact, it was designed by Leon Theremin, the inventor of the eclectic electronic music instrument by the same name. Theremin was apparently not pleased with having to create this bug, as he had been living in the States for quite some time, working on his inventions.
It's wonderful to hear Adam talking about his hearing aids, I didn't know he wore them, I'm a hearing aid wearer as well and I put off getting them for years because of the stigma attached. great to see such cool folk talking about the issue without any shame! how about Gordon Cole's hearing aid kit from Twin Peaks as a one day build??
He has discussed using hearing aids before, years ago, on the podcast, so he's completely open about it, and about how important it is to protect your hearing. But I agree it's awesome to have someone so high profile be honest about it all.👍
I have had (free on the NHS as I am in the UK) hearing aids for 7 months now and the free batteries that the NHS also provides last 2 weeks. Every time. They are Rayvac - also made in the UK. Stigma?! People don't have a problem with you wearing hearing aids - they have a problem with you not hearing what they say to you. Just get some. Dark Side Of The Moon now sounds so much better!
Got into throwing cards in my college dorm. Lots of power when you get the throw figured out - quite a few of us could throw at a wall 20 ft away and have them bounce back 10 ft.
NFC has small range because NFC devices have lousy antennae. If you use dish (or other directional antennae) and good amplification you can pick up NFC from very far away.
It´s always awesome when celebrities talk about their hearing aids, it helps to get rid of the stigma. Adam might want to take a look at Dr. Cliff Olsons channel, its great to learn more about hearing / and hearing aids. Also, there is a German company called "Hörluchs" that produces ear molds for hearing aids that double as hearing protection, which would be really useful in the shop. I`m not sure there is something similar available in the US. They are only certified in Europe so far, but something you may want to consider the next time you visit Germany. You won`t have to wait weeks to get an appointment here.
Can't recommend Ricky Jay's book LEARNED PIGS AND FIREPROOF WOMEN enough! A fascinating look at the bizarre vaudeville performers of the Nineteenth Century, both human and animal. Hard to put down!
That was a carve pice of wood given to him from a boy scout troop I believe. They would wait across the street until a meeting was going on then they would beam a signal at it then sound waves would cause a oscillation that they could receive. Think this is what happened but I’m getting old so I could be wrong.
Love the show, I just wish that they were the proper 2-4 hour podcast length rather than this shorter format. Conversations never seem like they are actually completed.
What do you mean by proper podcast length.... There's not a proper length, anyone can make a podcast as long or short as they want. There aren't fixed rules in what a podcast has to be. It just might be you listen to longer format podcasts, that doesn't mean they all have to be the exact length you want or they aren't a "proper" podcast. This is the definition of a podcast: a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new instalments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.
2-4 hours is pretty extreme. That would require a lot of extra time planning and not to mention recording. 30 minutes works well for a lunch break or commute home.
I've always been a big fan of Lee Child's earlier Reacher novels, and was somewhat disappointed with Tom Cruise being cast as Jack. I would have preferred someone more like Jason Statham TBH. Anyway, my favourite books are "The Killing Floor", "Without Fail" and "Die Trying". I would have loved to see Philip Seymour Hoffman as Beau Borken - I reckon he'd have made a fantastic bad guy / antagonist.
Ricky Jay could kill a person with only playing cards. Not that he actually did to my knowledge, but he could throw one hard enough to pierce the skin of a watermelon.
Tom Hardy as Jack Reacher? GOOD GO NO!!! Not only is he barely taller than Cruise but I hate wondering what stupid voice he will put on for his next roll. You want a Jack Reacher? Look no further than Colin Salmon. If he's not busy playing the first black James Bond. (Would be perfect as Bond and sooooo much better Idris Elba).
David Harbour now he's in shape for Hellboy would make a good Jack Reacher. Tom Hardy is too young and short. Harbour is looking just about perfect, but is 3 inches short. Maybe build up shoes and creative camera angles. Here's a recent photo i2.wp.com/www.usmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/David-Harbour.jpg?w=640&ssl=1
Last time I checked he's 51. Are you asking why he doesn't look like he did when he was on Mythbusters? A show that started in 2003, which was 15 years ago?

Neil Degrasse Tyson said something similar (1:57) ruclips.net/video/U8qay62uusg/видео.html
That's fabulous. I love the way you put that.

This is a fantastic idea for a one day build!

This info was very very useful. Thank you, Adam.

Let's have Jeremy on more often.
IMO he's a much better choice then Will. I know Will's their friend, but I've always thought he rarely adds to the conversation.
Adam, Will and Jeremy would be my choice.
"Adventures of the High-Functioning Hoarder" sounds like the title of the new video series that explores all the corners of the cave.
Norm please make this
Got into throwing cards in my college dorm. Lots of power when you get the throw figured out - quite a few of us could throw at a wall 20 ft away and have them bounce back 10 ft.
Adam, two of my brothers and my dad have those same hearing aides. They are life changing. I'm certain you will love them!
Ricky Jay part starts about 11:30 in.
Thanks
Adam going for the Centauri look today.

To display gauntlets get a Hindu statue of one of the gods with all the extra arms.
"Remember how you assumed I could hear perfectly?" "Yeah." "I couldn't. Here's how I still can't." "Okay."
7:50 Loved A Quiet Place
Also, Adam's sweater is hoodie is hella nice. Is it custom? Of available at the JPL store. :O
Expecting to see a Futurama episode with the 'Adam Savage Museum' in the background!

So Jack Reacher is Dave Bautista ? Please make it happen.
When will you guys put an actual screen on the pipboy 2000?
Anyone know where you can buy Adam's NASA hoodie?
@@IAMSTULITTLE Thanks! 😃

Norm. If those headphones don't touch the top of your head I'm going to have an aneurysm.
"You might have seen.."
Thousands of people will now watch all the tested videos to try and figure this out ^^
Norman what do you keep looking at over on your right side?
I NEED ADAM'S JACKET, WHERE CAN I GET ONE??

I've seen the induction charging hearing aids. The charging station makes it less practical for people that travel or just have a busy life.
NFC max range is only about a metre even with the biggest HID devices.
Tom Hardy is relativity short too but could angle him right like Bane for the height of Reacher.

F for Fake and Exit Through the Giftshop, also have some nice insights in the economy of the art market.
I think Reacher is said to be 6’4”

I've always thought Aaron Eckhart woulda made a decent Reacher: tall(er than Tom Cruise), blond(ish), pretty rugged-yet-the-ladies-like-him.
Tom Hardy is TINY. If Tom Cruise was too short, Tom Hardy would be the same
My grandfather had low frequency hearing loss; boy howdy those hearing aids were expensive.
I thank goodness for the NHS in the UK everyday, no way I could afford them myself but our pubic healthcare is great!
First time watcher here, it was odd hearing Adam say fuck
the russian bug was in a seal - it was powered by external radio source
I was really disappointing with that sweatshirt/hoodie that Adam is wearing. It looks ok, but offers very little in the way of warmth.
There's an old trick to sticking cards into a watermelon. I'm not saying he used the trick, but...
Not impossible to do in film look at the first new sherlock holmes movie!

Salmon is already 56 years old.
And Cruise is 56. If you look the part surely thats what matters. Salmon looks to be in his 40's and was pretty physical in Krypton lately.
show gauntlets each holding a sword

check out "the modern rogue" they have a nice tutorial on card throwing
RFID NFC. Similar, not the same.
Terrible ad placement.
Hi
Why does Adam look so old in the thumbnail
Last time I checked he's 51. Are you asking why he doesn't look like he did when he was on Mythbusters? A show that started in 2003, which was 15 years ago?
Maybe it's the crazy scientist hair? :p
Yeah, Tom Hardy would nail Reacher.
