    Do you use reverse record keeping or are you a more traditional planner?

    • @heatherzaidel9366

      Always reverse! Never have to erase anything, just record what's done! I use pretty much all The Good and The Beautiful and it will all get done in the year. Lots of supplements the kids do daily too (like explode the code and spelling) and if we don't get to it, no big deal!

    I never knew my planning was called Reverse Planning until now. 😆 I quit logging ahead of time too! God was laughing at "my plans"! We go year round, 180 days required, but when life, illness or vacation happens we are not behind. Now, my planning time is spent cross referencing my books and materials. I go through our materials, make a spreadsheet for each subject/materials, topic and pages for those topics. So now, I can emerse my student into several days of a topic for repetition and matetials wont fall through the cracks.

    This is my 4th year of homeschooling and yes writing down what we do is great. It's so much more relaxed. I have even had a few un school days this year, I have never done this and it's is great, mostly we will follow a routine for the day. I also focus on reading, writing, and math. math we follow a curriculum because there are things they need to learn first before they move on. Reading is super simple they read on their level and have to practice every day. My oldest (12) does do reports periodically but at this point I know her comprehension is good so I only have her do it once in a while. My kindergartner (5) just talks about the stories we listen to. She also it learning phonics and sight words.My middle (7) practices reading on his level and we discuss the stories as we go he has started simple chapter books, we also read one off stories on his level. Writing for my oldest is research based reports from fill out this paper to essays of all kinds. She also does some lapbooks and projects on her own I'll help her come up with ideas if she asks but she plans them. My middle does lapbooks and simple reports. My youngest does some lapbooks and LA. The younger 2 also practice writing words and or letters. For the rest of the subjects history, science, geography, music,art and current events and read aloud we do together and at this point I feel like I just introduced them to topics with in it and if they wan to go further with it we go further with it. This might change expecially history but I haven't found a curriculum that is in my price frame that works for them yet.

      This sounds wonderful! We had a couple of years where we did history and science this way and just checked out books from the library about the topics that I wanted to cover. I feel like from reading your comments that you would like the Charlotte Mason method (what we do for history). Have you looked into Ambleside Online? They have free lesson plans and you just have to find the books to read, which the library often does. You could choose one grade level on their site and do it family style. I really like Simply Charlotte Mason’s curriculum for that reason. ☺️ Blessings!

Thank you!!! I was already stressing out bc of all the lesson planning (I’m a preschool teacher) and my district dictated a lot of my planning so I had so much anxiety. But this was seriously sent by God for my heart to slow down 🥲😭 for some reason this never crossed my mind and it’s genius. Again. Thank you 😊 ❤

    I’m a retired mental health nurse and I am so impressed with this method. I used to advise my patients to do exactly the same. The reason for asking people to write down what they have accomplished rather than what they want or need to do, is that it shifts the brain into reflecting on all the successes achieved.
    When we write to do lists at the end of each day, the brain immediately forgets to notice our successes and achievements. Our minds quickly become target focussed and we lose the skill to reflect backwards. Our minds become perpetually trapped in the forward looking, target oriented, always onto the next task, instead of taking the time to breathe, reflect, absorb the successes and achievements, and in doing so support the building of our confidence and self esteem.
    This method of writing down our achievements also helps us to cope with life’s ups and downs and often chaotic way of presenting itself to us. In other words, it teaches resilience.
    Well done 👏👏👏

    That's a huge shift and I made it, too. It took more than one year of stress and being afraid I wouldn't cover everything. We are on year 21 of homeschooling and I am enjoying my last child's last couple years of high school. If I hadn't relaxed, I don't think we would still be homeschooling. We also have four children.

    I heard about reverse planning from another homeschool mum before I found your channel and it changed my way of thinking. We've only been homeschooling for 2 months and I'm so glad I learnt about this early on in our journey. In our first few weeks, I was writing schedules and getting frustrated because the kids didn't want to do things. I then heard about reverse planning and it freed us to go with the flow more and enabled me to observe what my children were naturally drawn to and what they were learning through their interests. I feel more relaxed and able to identify their key learning areas without them even realising it.

    I have always had to do reverse record keeping because our schedule is never constant. I have a close friend in bad health who has no family to care for her, so we have doctors appointments to pop up all the time. I have found RUclips videos and some very good apps that my son can do on these days to be able to do his school subjects on the go. And the apps help him practice things like memorizing multiplication tables and math word problems that he has trouble with. Those have really helped him. I have been feeling incredibly guilty, though, about not being consistent with school, but somehow, watching this video has made me realize that I can relax and do it as best I can. Now my problem is that my special needs child literally refuses to do school work some days. My state has no requirements about how many days of school you do or what subjects you teach as long as you teach them SOMETHING. I expect this to change. But the "umbrella school" I am with does have requirements, and besides, I want my son to actually be educated to the best of his ability. My cover school requires 140 days of school to be done by May 31st, grades turned in on June 1st. I would venture out on my own, which in many ways would be highly beneficial to me, but the cover school has co-ops some years, where we go weekly to teach classes and allow the kids (over 100) to learn together and play together between classes, and every year we have several field trips, monthly park days, also monthly get together days so the kids can all socialize, because we feel that is important. I especially feel that's important for my son who has mild autism and BIG ADHD. Lol! But I'm having trouble getting my days in. What you said about not having to do every subject every day has relieved a LOT of pressure on me. I had heard people say that before, but somehow I get it now. Also, I am big on record keeping, but have had a lot of trouble figuring out a good way to do it. Thank you so much for your videos. This is the first one I've stumbled across, and I just subscribed and hit the bell for notifications. Thank you so much for your help!

    Such a great idea, and it reminds me of something I read with the same concept. Having a "done" list instead of a "to-do" list- works with anything, including homeschooling records! I find I actually tend to use both, just depends on the day/week.

    Yes!! Last year was our first year homeschooling. Five kids preK through 3rd grade. I saw someone do this last year and truly think it kept my momentum and sanity. Being able to look back at what we DID get done was an encouraging thing at the end of the day. I made an excel spreadsheet that has our subjects on the left and a line to record what each kid did. I just print off the two page spread per week and put it in a 3 ring binder. I also record each kid in a different color and all things we did as a group in a sixth color. This year I did make an overall “week at a glance” in a separate excel sheet for the whole year so I can prepare myself for the week. My goal is to cross off the subject as we go. So even if we get “behind” a week in a subject, I just have to look to see what we have to do next.
    Thank you for sharing what fits for your family. I have taken so many ideas from so many different places to find what fits for us!

    I have an online lesson planner that I use to plan a week or two in advance. Anything that doesn’t get done, I simply extend the lesson with a tap and delete what was covered the prior day. This planner costs me $12 a year and it keeps a permanent record of everything we accomplished for years. If I want, I can make a curriculum overview or skeleton plan right into the lesson plan ‘calendar”, just so I know what our goals are for the year. We homeschool through a public school charter that requires lesson plans, although we can use any curriculum we want and any hours or days we choose. The app I use is called Planbook and it can be used on a computer, tablet or smartphone. It is total planning freedom without the white-out! BTW…..Loved your video!

  • @mrsblair2007
    @mrsblair2007 Год назад +1

    Thank you for your video. Similarly, I felt that planning everything out was too frustrating so I switched to reverse planning. THEN I realized last year that having to write out each lesson my kids completed was so tedious and frustrating. What I did then to make sure I check things off, but not do a bunch of extra work weekly is photocopy the table of contents for each curriculum my kids are using. I store those in a planning binder tabbed for each subject, separated by each kiddo. Then, its as simple as crossing off the lesson as we go!

    I just found your channel thanks to another homeschool Mom! Yes! I never had a name for it, but this is how we do our planner. I felt a lot of pressure to change my ways this year, but no more. Thank you. We deal with some ADHD here and having our year/day/week/ whatever planned loosely really helps take the pressure off when we need to be flexible. I often wish I more like my amazing, super organized stay on schedule friend. But that doesn’t work for us. So we embrace what does.

    LOVE this! Thank you for sharing. I had my own struggles with traditional planning when I started homeschooling my girls years ago. Last year our planning naturally evolved into this record keeping with subject checklists. No exaggeration, it dramatically improved our homeschool culture. No longer a list of failed-to-complete tasks, our planner became a list of accomplishments with positive reinforcement and personal accountability. Our state does not require a minimum number of days, but your system looks helpful for those who need that documentation. Kudos! Looks amazingly achievable! 😊

    I’ve tried being more traditional (former teacher) but I’m incorporating reverse scheduling. I’m making a list for each subject of what needs to be done on what order (particularly helpful for living book based history and science) and then I just look to see what is next when we have time.
    I’m breaking it down to which pages get read together.

  • @CanadaGirl94
    @CanadaGirl94 3 года назад +2

    I had been wondering about that particular section and your idea 💡 really got me thinking!! Game changer!! I’ve honestly already do the “reversed planning” cause I’m lazy & im ALWAYS changing things up. Also life happens and sometimes my daughter isn’t feeling it. It’s helpful, less stressful, and just so much easier to just document AFTER class. I literally planned ahead the other day for today in particular because we were on a roll basically. Look what happened 😅😅 we ended up going all over town looking for covid testing clinics & we both were SO worn out by the time we got home 😴 so I have today’s plan unfulfilled but hopefully tomorrow I’ll do it. I also have such a HARD time trying to break out of my traditional school mindset. I live with my mom atm & she’s really on my butt about SO MANY SUBJECTS & her idea of schooling really has me wanting to go hide in a closet lol. I mean I do know why I’m homeschooling the way I want to because I know myself personally and I also know my daughter. I wanted something that’ll work & not have us feeling like it’s an epic fail. I feel guilty when my mom ask what we’ve done and HOW LONG. My kid in kindergarten & I can get our main subjects for the most part down within two hours (I do a lot of play/fun activities and we lose track of time) but she’s expecting something like 6hrs… how do I break from the traditional mindset & feel less guilty that we’re “not” doing school when we actually are?? I’d love any advice. I’m also the same type of homeschooler as you but secular,
    Oh and we tested negative btw!

    • @TheEclecticHomeschooler
      @TheEclecticHomeschooler  3 года назад +1

      Oh that’s a hard one, especially with you living with her at the moment. Keep in mind that even kids going to school don’t get that much active instruction time… with breaks and calming disruptions from other kids, etc. Until recently Kindergarten was always only like 3-4 hours max and even then it was much more play based than it is now. For the mindset shift, I’d suggest reading Dumbing Us Down by John Taylor Gatto (former NY school teacher of the year) and/or The Call of the Wild + Free by Ainsley Arment. Dumbing Us Down is more about the failure of the public school system and how it’s not teaching kids what they really need to learn, where Wild + Free is great inspiration for what we can make homeschooling actually be. Both are secular and both are fantastic. Best wishes!

    I stumbled on reverse record keeping by accident when I got behind with my "traditional" planning and I loved it! We have been using it for several years now and it has been a game changer. Thank you for sharing the awesome tip about marking each completed lesson in a separate page. That is such a brilliant idea.

    6 Period Teacher Lesson Plan; Days Vertically Down The Side (W202)6 Period Teacher Lesson Plan; Days Vertically Down The Side (W202). this is my favorite planner to use from Amazon. I use reverse record keeping because I ran into the same issues you had. I also buy a cheap notebook and I plan a couple days at a time in the notebook so I can just transfer or mark out and my planner stays nice and neat. So far this has been working great.

    I love reverse planning! It has brought me so much peace. I use to preplan then I would get so stressed having to erase full months because one day did not go as planned☹. Reverse planning for me is a lifesaver, it takes the stress of me and my child so we do not feel behind. We can look at the planner and say hey look at what we did today Yay, instead of look at what we did not get done. Thank you for sharing with us.

    It's been really hard when the public school friends of mine would ask me advice and questions but then they get really agitated when I try to tell them to keep a book of records.

    I'm doing a combination of both approaches, I think. I put my subjects in an Excel sheet and log the "hours" on each subject I plan to spend for each day. Only Math and language arts mon-thurs. History read aloud is Friday morning, and science is twice a month on weekends. I try to keep science fun and interactive with nature and museums. That's all I'm teaching 😂, everything else is an unschool approach. My kids can explore science and history courses with Easy Peasy Curriculum on their own in the future if it interests them.
    I log my hours per subject per month for the whole school year. BUT, once the day is complete, I highlight the day to annotate that the day was completed. If something didn't happen as planned, I just adjust that day on the excel sheet. Super easy to make adjustments. Most days happen as planned though. I do a block schedule

    So true! I now rely mostly on my block schedule list on Word format so I can keep track each day and each week. But I still write on my planner in reverse to get myself aware about the accomplishments each month. I did focus on some topics away from the "regular " schedule, especially in Social Studies to make it relatable to my kid.

    I needed something to take away the nervousness and overwhelm I get to even start our 2nd year. I just survived last year, trying so many new things. I think this will save me headache and time. I have 1.5 yr old and I feel I’m often just missing out on his little years for so much time being in my head analyzing how to channel my older 2 and be ready to tackle a day! They are so boisterous. I want to enjoy this year, but I def crave order and some structure, atleast in my head. I need less chaos in my mind and going from 1 thing to next, because the boy chaos is just gonna be there!

    I basically do exactly what you do but I just do it in a binder instead. One thing I do is print out the table of contents of each subject that has one and put them in group subject divider or for whatever student it pertains to and then I have an automatic checklist for that subject. I got that idea from Pam Barnhill. Anything not open and go I make a procedure list for so it turns into an open and go approach. Then I use Sarah Mackenzie's spiral notebook method for my son to open up that door to be more independent. We will see how it all goes this year and I'll revisit. But just having a binder and my own printables or set up feels less constricting haha. Thank you for sharing!!

    I kind of do both 🤣 I print out the syllabus and 36 week chart for my program and highlight things as we do them (switching highlighter colors every week to see the progression and track if one subject is getting consistently skipped). I write out a few days worth of work in my son’s notebook and he checks them off as he does the work.

    Hi! My name is Michelle, mother of 8 kiddos and been homeschooling for about 9 years now and I have not yet found a good scheduling system to work for my big family. I never really liked "scheduling" it always seemed to stress me out! I have heard of reverse scheduling once before but never took it into consideration mainly because it wasn't really explained well. Your explanation on this was just 🤯🤯🤯 for me, makes so much sense!!! I'm giving it a try and thank you so much for this post 💕☺️

    I have never used a curriculum. We piece work our homeschooling. I will piece work a broad three months, so I know where I am going. Example this summer sewing, nature walks, gardening, bees, worms, butterflies, and chicks, cooking, journaling and sketching, wild foods, preserving, games. Now with these subjects I take out books from library and my personal teacher library, I look for activities I want to explore and how that relates to the core curriculum standards. Example sewing a quilt, basic fractions learning whole, halve, thirds and fourths. Children need to sew examples of each block in their quilts. We do it in a row by row method. Each area of interest I find my subjects grade appropriate. If there are things that we are missing in those subjects then we will learn these separate, but this does not happen often. Then I go through all of our activities and put the lessons in educational benchmarks. No matter what age we journal all the way through. This gives us our proof all is happening, they also are fun to look at in the future. Besides my kids are grown and we are working with the second group of grandkids, so when you are co-teaching with parents this gives them a peace of mine. Also everyone know where everything is at.

    I ddo both! For my highschooler I use a digital planner called planbook, I plan out his entire year then if assignments need to be adjusted i can dump them forward or backwards or delete. That way he's independent and knows what to do each day. For my younger boys I definitely do reverse record keeping!!

    We do something in between that. I do a bullet journal and write assignments right before we do them. Planning ahead didn't work because if I planned out math for instance my guy might say after 1 lesson, "Mom, I'm ready for the test. This is really easy." OR "I'm not ready for the test. I need more practice first. Plotting it out was just counter productive..
