And David definitely did care about his mother's troubles. The reason he didn't get the proper upgrade for school wasn't because they didn't have the money, it was because David was trying to save his mom some extra cash by getting a cheaper one.
David's empathy stat was so high that for the entirety of Edgerunners he was trying to fulfill his mother's dream, Lucy's dream and Maine's goals all while not even forming his own. I think that's why David was special

@SAUSAGE SURPRISE Well, that (what you said), but also the cyber-psychosis that David and Maine pretty much induced himself into or chose for himself, which can be likened to being hopped up and continuously using drugs, alcohol, meth or cocaine, crack, weed/cannabis or kush and bud, beer, vodka, hard liquor, scotch. Chasing the next, biggest greatest high and euphoria and ecstasy. It's obsession obsessive, impulse and being unable to help it. You tell the addict to stop, well, they simply can't. They've become so hopelessly, helplessly reliant and dependent and even at times hopelessly inert because of abusing that drug and alcohol and beer or addiction and obsession, so much that they cannot go on. Life and living wouldn't feel right and would feel empty or insane, the normalcy or normality is then debilitating and too hard for them. So, they return to binge on these substances, chemicals and drinks and habits.
Not much you can do there, unless you consider or believe rehab and half-houses are an alternative for them. Idk if Cyberpunk 2077's world would have something akin to that.

Lorewise, he survived an atom bomb and SPOILER one shotted characters like Johnny Silverhand in the story SPOILER so, him beating David that easily is not crazy at all, it just properly shows what a threat smasher actually is, something that the game didn't

@@Mr_Crair98 I never really said or meant that it was crazy or absurd for Smasher to end David, it was the fact that it was too sudden and dumb. It was a dumb death, kinda same with Rebecca.
Plus, Smasher was less menacing and imposing in Cyberpunk 2077 while in Edgerunners he was a beast. I know David probably wouldn't have made, lasted or survived that long even if he didn't die by his hands. Because you know David and Lucy would be targeted endlessly because they disobeyed the law, killed a fixer and went against Arasaka and Militech. So they have to pay the price for it, more so David.

Most likely it was cut, just like lets say importance of "path" and instead of 3 unique Vs we got 3x30min tutorials. I think my biggest issue with the corpo side of 2077, specifically Hanako and Yorinobu is that I feel the games characterization of them is bordering on butchering because Yorinobu was supposed to be a gray foil in Arasaka, someone that thought his fathers ways were evil so he rebelled against him while Hanako was supposed to be the morally good foil that still loves her father but is overall one of the most good characters in Arasaka.
Compare this to the game where Yorinobu is basically a horrible person and even Hanako is basically too shady for how she was characterized, add insult to injury with the fact that you still die in the Arasaka ending and I just can't help but feel CDPR didn't understand 2020 at all.

Cyberpunk feels like 1 third or fourth of a complete game that's missing several chapters or arcs. An intro arc where we actually do anything with our background with multiple relevant quests at least, a proper arc. Then the Jackie arc where you can actually be close friends (and Female V can romance him with all they've been through, instead of him randomly going to Misty instead, Misty can be your friend still but she comes to console you instead of you her. A challenge achievement to save him if you're skilled enough, which switches roles where you'll be the one to insert the chip so he doesn't have to, so Jackie doesn't need an excuse to hand it over to you. (Could even result in an alternate engagement where he's the one who helped Takemura get Dex and he's the one who shoots Dex instead and it's the three of you on the run)
And there should be an Ending arc which is the Freeroam do the side quests arc for any ending where you survive, which would be more split half and half, and throw in the endings where you don't survive but just have more time. Then you can have multiple true end points of no return where you leave night city, or go into some cryo storage, or get uploaded.

It is short of you play only the main missions you could finish it in a couple hours if you really tried but running around with mantis blades slicing everything apart is really undeniably fun. There does need to be more though the city is cool but it’s a really short and sweet experience that was made to be replayable and less long term playing. Like it’s not fallout 4 that you could play for a hundred plus hours and still have something to do it’s more like new Vegas where you experience the sights and people and whatever atrocities you want to comit and then after that you play a different game and eventually comeback to new Vegas because it’s just so good. Without story expansion dlc like new Vegas had this game just falls short of being a couple day fun experience and more like a two three day playthrough instead of a week or something like other games can make it too. Just more good story telling is all I’m asking for the dlc and the next cyberpunk game. I love the atmosphere and what’s in the game but there need to be maxtac ships that fly personnel to you and they drop down and the cars can fly and actual police chases just simple things that make the environment more believable and more immersive than just spawning in cops and maxtac. I mean gta did this system well like ten years ago with gta v so why can’t they make something decent.

Maybe it's my background with the TTRPG, or maybe I'm just going crazy, but I had a lot of issues with Edgerunners. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad - in fact, I think it's one of the best things we've got this year -, I just think it missteps in a few key areas. To avoid writing a full blown essay, I'll narrow it down to three things - cyberware, cyberpsychosis, and Rebecca.
The TLDR here is that cyberware (mainly the Sandevistan here) and cyberpsychosis are nebulously defined plot devices that function in whatever manner is convenient for the writers, and Rebecca is a late addition whose execution actively undermines elements of the story trying to be told.
So, let's tackle the Sandevistan first. Sandevistans are supposed to be fairly common pieces of cyberware that increase your perception and reaction times. Sandevistans do not slow down time or make you go sonic fast. Likewise, they are not death/insanity machines given that they remain inactive 99% of the time meaning their strain on mind and body is comparably low. No one should be surprised that David, a mostly organic individual who isn't an absolute invalid, can use a sandevistan without dying or immediately going insane, nor should David be able to outrun explosives or targeting AI.
On a similar note, cyberpsychosis isn't just a boogeyman, it's a dissociative disorder that stems from modifying or replacing too much of your body. It can manifest as homicidal tendencies, but, more broadly, it can also produce other antisocial behaviours - such as kleptomania.
While it can affect anyone, those who lack empathy or psychological stability are more prone to developing it. This is sort of a problem for David, given his consumption of literal spree-killer BDs and the death of his mother. David should actually be more susceptible to cyberpsychosis, not less.
Lastly, with regards to Rebecca, I believe her to be a later addition to a mostly complete script. She was slotted in as a tertiary character turned secondary in order to fill a very specific function. Basically, the show didn't have time to introduce new characters after killing half the crew so Rebecca (and Falco to a lesser degree) gets hastily added to the first half as a means to mitigate this issue. In principle, there nothing wrong with this, but the execution of it ends up causing problems.
Rebecca's characterization ends up giving her more main heroine energy as a secondary character than Lucy has as a primary one. Rebecca is forward, open, honest, and attentive. She's the first character (alongside Maine) to show David respect and interact with him in an honest and amiable manner. She's also the first character to notice and confront David about his downward spiral - although, I'd argue she suffers from a bit of character assassination at this point given how uncharacteristically docile her approach is.

Actually a lot of good points here, I certainly wouldn't say Edgerunners is a masterpiece by any stretch. That said:
      1) It's been over 50 years. Clearly the Sandevistan/Kerenzikov technology has evolved a lot. Definitely too OP though both in-game and in the anime though, everyone would slot that sh*t if they could.
      2) Rebecca was added by Studio Trigger because they wanted a loli. That's it. CDPR wanted them to cut her because they're woke now, and Trigger refused. I agree with the rest though.

As soon as you make that argument you have to justify why basically every aspect of the setting has stagnated for that long. The whole jump from 2020 to 2077 was less a result of well-planned and considered advancement of the setting and more a desire to push the date of the IP's setting up so it doesn't coincide with the current (now past) period in time. Basically, just treat 2077 as 2020, because that's what CDPR did.
Generally speaking, the reason why I revert to the 2020 source material so frequently is that it's by far the most consistent and detailed material released on the setting. Even Red, the most recent version of the TTRPG (if I'm not mistaken), doesn't have the same depth as it's 2020 counterpart.
I've actually heard that Trigger initially wanted to take the story in a different direction, but since members of CDPR handled a good deal of the writing, Trigger didn't really get their way. Since I can't find any proof for that claim, it's hard to say.
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say Rebecca is a holdover, to some degree, from the direction Trigger wanted to move in. I could see her being one of their hills to die on, so to speak, and ultimately refusing to do away with her. I mean, if you compare her to the rest of the cast, she sticks out like a sore thumb (and not because she's a loli, which I don't really think she is).
She's by far the most "Trigger" character in the cast. She's a violence-loving gun gremlin, but she's far more communicative, loyal, and selfless than everyone else in the cast (save David's mom, maybe). She's basically an antithesis to the corrupting, dehumanizing, and atomizing influence of Night City.

Mike Pondsmith (the creator of the TTRPG) clarified the cyberpsychosis in a reddit post that cyberpsychosis worked more like steroid addiction, and having a "better" background would ease you off that - with David being just a typical poor student working his ass off for school before that... he's still way miles ahead to your typical Night City residents. V on the other hand, well it was stated he was the exception due to either the chip, his mysterious background being better overall, or just special like David (or all the three factors at once).

They wanted the appeal of both the custom player avatar and the grounded character, but wound up with neither.
The player doesn't have enough raw freedom to make V their own, but V also isn't developed enough to stand strong as their own character.
If V had been developed as Vincent or Valerie, a Street Kid with deep roots in Night City with way more backstory and some actual connections, they could have stood alongside David and Valerie.
You'd still be role playing as them, choosing how to build their skills, but like Geralt, you'd be more immersed into their character than trying to play your own.

I haven't watched this whole video yet, so apologies if I repeat something that's said later, but gotta say that I immediately relate.
The very first thing I felt after having watched Edgerunners, was me thinking "I wish there was a game made after this show"... and that is a genuinely sad thought to have, while remembering the hopes and dreams before CyberPunk 2077's release. The immediate rise of Edgerunners related mods shows a similar craving from the PC playerbase, who are actively making this game more into "what it could have been" (or even "should have been") than the developer.
The show puts all the potential wasted on display in so many ways, that in contrast the game feels just so uninspired, tame and "play it safe".
We wanted a gritty, savage RPG with attitude and got a generic, neutered action game with RPG elements. (aka an action game of today, as practically all of em have RPG elements already, but figured I'd mention it anyway before someone argues the RPG elements make it an RPG)
What I gotta admit that they made a great looking setting. The city, I mean. It worked fantastic as a setting for even the show and I admire Edgerunners attention to detail that they put actual locations VERY accurately into the show (as well as their integrity in not changing their vision when CDPR said one character was .. a problem). If the city actually had as much verticality as advertised, the subways and other functions that were hyped along with big sentences like "the greatest open world crowd system to date" or whatever that promo quote was, it would have been quite amazing.

Regarding Cyberpsychosis: there's a lot of people who seem to completely ignore, forget or misunderstand why V doesn't go into CP, even after being fully augmented. I recall some dialogue and/or lore shards in the game explained V's "immunity" to CP with the main story aspect of the game: the chip overriding his personality. The chip essentially manages to hold back any negative changes to V's psyche, which would be caused by CP, by removing and "repairing" the damages done regardless, because the damage that would be done to V, is overwritten and hence removed by Johnny's new personality. Imagine....a virus fighting a virus and building up an immunity towards it in the process.
Also: V is practically dead, a walking corpse or even more: a construct. The Alt A.I. even explains it how V "died" in the scrapyard after Dex killed you. V's brain doesn't get effected in the same way by CP as a normal, living one would. David was a normal guy who overdosed himself with augments and the Sandavistan (or however it's spelled) within a much longer time frame. The augments had a lot of time to change his brain and lead him down into a CP. Meanwhile V, on the other hand, pumped himself full with mods within like a couple of weeks, so his brain didn't have enough time, so to speak, to decay towards CP.

While that's an interesting explanation, it's not my point in the video. Whether there's a reason or not doesn't matter: the problem is the direction of the story itself.

Finding Evelyn was only a means to an end for me but for some reason V gets Judy's approval even when asking Evelyn on site about her employer. Additionally, it's fucking weird at how they frown upon merc V. The choices in which you ask for money every time you do a favor is somehow bad. I would disagree with Adam Smasher point that David is stronger then him, Adam Smasher is the bodyguard of the CEO of Arasaka. He would have top of line mods, stuff the wouldn’t even get released on the market in which be top secret in order to protect most important person billion dollars corp. David while awesome protagonists he only has 1 top military mod, and prototype that meant to eventually go mass market. No way millions spent on Adam Smasher would even match technology used to protect CEO of Arasaka. If anything it was the game last fight with him made him garbage/ wasted opportunity , thanks CDPR.

Honestly, I just expected some more Act 1 stuff. The game changes drastically in Act 2 and it suddenly doesn't really feel the same because the story is no longer about you and your friends, it's about Johnny and the chip. You don't have a team and you're no longer free, so it no longer feels like what you'd expect from a Cyberpunk 20XX story.
Probably the worst thing is that it's so lonesome. You have some contacts but unlike in Act 1 they never meet and all act on their own, it's not the same, it's not a team like on the tabletop. All you have is a voice in your head. The closest thing you have to a team is Panam and her family, which I appreciate. It's like the game dangles in front of you the story you could have had and then takes it all away from you so that you're constantly reminded of what you're missing out on.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad story. I just don't think it's the best delivered in video game format. Compare it to Shadowrun Dragonfall, a game that makes you care about a character's death within the first 15 minutes of it. The world is shitty and oppressive, but at least you have a team and friends who care about you, and they're there with you when things get bad. There are sad moments but you fight it through with them. I feel like the anime had more of this kind of energy.
Edit: Having now watched the whole video, glad we're mostly in agreement.

One correction: it's not like CDPR hadn't done anything wrong until Cyberpunk, it's just that people forgave them because of the success of The Witcher 3. I'd recommend you search up how they said the footage they had shown of Witcher 3 before its release was how the game was actually going to look like, only to release a game that looked worse (which was easy to forgive granted the other qualities of the game) and how they tried to limit piracy of The Witcher 2 after the game was used to promote their "we don't care if you pirate" platform GOG.

Most of the problems with the game are core to it's design. You can't just fix the abrupt death of Jackie. You can't fix that Johnny Silverhand has a braindead anti-corpo stance almost entirely devoid of nuance. You can't fix that getting shitloads of cybernetics doesn't have negative impacts on the player in ways that are felt IN THE WORLD rather than just as stats. Or that they have clumsily implemented old-hat armor systems "this T-shirt gives me 20 more armor than the ACTUAL armor I was just wearing". Or that the hacking is, at the moment, completely outshined by a solo-dev indie team that made Deadeye Deepfake Simulacrum, a better cyberpunk game than what should have been THE cyberpunk game in CP2077.
The game's choices are almost devoid of impact. The characters are uninspired and the only ones I thought didn't bore me completely to death were the standout Jackie, and at least for ME, Panam and her questline. It's just damn sad to me that all these actual professionals came together to make something THIS shit, and I don't even mean on a technical level, but a creative one.

Shadowrun handles this a whole lot better; some people 'run the shadows' (i.e. take on illicit jobs, heists, etc.) simply because they love the lifestyle. They love the rush. Some do it because their identities are burnt and they aren't willing to give up and die; they're willing to do whatever it is to survive.
There's far too much "How can I be happy?", "what about my relationships?", and other comparatively minor issues in CP2077.
There's absolutely no feeling of "any run you can walk away from is a good one".

  • @wisterite3080
    @wisterite3080 2 года назад +2

I think one of the main things that the anime did right is highlight and take a lot of the lore within Mike P.’s take on the Cyberpunk genre. I mean in reality- David and V’s story beats are incredibly similar just presented in two different forms of media. The anime didn’t add anything that the universe didn’t already have, just gave a perspective of those who live in night city. It gives you a digestible bite sized portion of the world that you don’t have to run around to figure out yourself. You get a snippet into cyberwars, how corporations juristic everyone’s lives, the immense divide between poverty and wealth, and how as a result people reach out to live fast and die hard to feel like they’ve done something.
We see it with both V and David. They’re both individuals who had something (no matter where you start) and as a result of losing “everything” take their shots at trying to be the next legend in this city. They both went out of their way to try and achieve it out of loss, and as a result further buried themselves in hole, continuing to lose everything that actually mattered to them and not realizing before it was too late.
I won’t be one to tell someone to do something they don’t want to do, but as someone in game development and writing I thinks there’s a few things with this series I like to tell people because I believe there truly is some magic to be found within it.
Mike Pondsmiths universe had an ending before you even press start. Whether you’re watching David unravel in edgerunners, or V spiral as a result of losing everything and then slowly beginning to lose themselves. You play through, doing all these destructive and drastic actions to try and do something that was all for nothing. There’s a line in Automatic Love, and early mission in the game where this line sets the tone of V’s story and sat with me the whole game after asking what is it they need to come to terms with so badly. “To come to terms with the fact that you died. Now move on already.”
V is obsessed with the idea of trying to save her life, losing others while in the process, going through immense trauma and dealing with unforgettable events in attempts to try and stop something that already happened. V died when she was shot in the head. The chip brought her back temporarily, but she isn’t herself, and she died… you can’t reverse death you just slowed it down.
In my opinion it’s an excellent story, that I think especially shines in the universe it’s set it because it is one that is driven by ambition and helplessness.
One of the best parts of the games is feeling this dynamic of V trying to avoid this reality, and seeing how the city has burned so many into the ground. You get to see how the world has impacted those around it- through things besides character action. It’s great, and an aspect I don’t see highlighted enough despite story and the message in Edgerunners being very similar and in line with it.
I don’t think either are perfect, but I don’t think anyone can argue on it being such a believable world. Especially one so intricate and vast in the ways it ties everything together.
I think if you enjoyed the anime, you’ll just be getting way more in-depth looks at so many elements and beats within the game.
