    In this drawing I go over how to draw a cast shadow. I try and go through it step by step. I try to put my thought on the drawing down into words. Check out the Video! :D

    For those of us who are unable to do the college thing all over again, I really appreciate the amount of knowledge we can gain by just watching a 10 minute video. You made it so easy to understand so quickly!

    If you havent already made one, can you make a video on how to draw shadows of more complicated things, like people for example? I feel like it’s a lot harder.

    You know!,, I have watched a huge amount of videos to know how to shade before your video .. and really I didn't understand anything .. your way is amazing and I really understand it and I didn't imagine that shadow is that easy .. thanks alot 😍😍

    Oh so you need another object connected to the ground plane in order to locate the shadow? Thanks! That really helped me.

  • @mariovelez578
    @mariovelez578 4 года назад

    Thanks! I don't even draw, but I think this method would really help because I'm interested in computer graphics. Also I wonder how you would find volumetric lighting with a similar technique. Another way you could do it though for any convex polyhedron is to cast every vertex to the plane and fill in the shadow

  • @sandipansirsat4567
    @sandipansirsat4567 6 лет назад

    Basically we have to take the top corner points on the ground and draw perpendicular to it of size of vertices.

    How do you determine the bottom of the light source if you're drawing in a place without a defined light source (sunlight)?

    • @wmichaelbooth
      @wmichaelbooth 7 лет назад +3

      You only use this method for this kind of spot light source. The sun is so far away that rays of sunlight are essentially parallel. In that case all your guidelines connecting the top corners of the cube to the ground plane would be parallel to one another. Hopefully, that makes some sense--it's the sort of thing that is much easier to show than to explain in words. Also, keep in mind that if you're doing a perspective drawing, you don't treat the sun this way because those parallel rays of sunlight converge into the distance just like all your other parallel lines. In this case you treat the sun just like the spot light in this video except it's "pole" would touch the ground at the horizon.

    I think maybe you haven't placed the base of the light source on the same as that of the cube - ie surely should find the centre of the near left side of cube and the far right, join the base points and that's where the base of the lamp post is, no?

    dude your awesome ,, I have to learn how to draw shadows and shades of different objects like cones , cylinders , boxes ,etc
    ..because I have an exam at university .. so its really important for me to learn it .. I actually tried to draw shadow of sphere the same way you did .. but it didnt work since the sphere doesn't have corners or angles .. so I'm wondering if you use this way only
    :) to draw shadows of cubes ..I mean.. is there another way to draw shadows for solids like sphere or cylinder? .. thank you

    • @manossparakis8117
      @manossparakis8117 7 лет назад +1

      yea u just determine the angle of the light on your sphere, u then take the perpendicular plane of the sphere to that angle. that plane is a circle, imagine you cut the sphere with a knife so that the plane it creates faces directly at the light source. after that you project that plane to the ground and do the same thing as this video

    • @Keropi41
      @Keropi41 3 года назад

      I dont entirely get what you are referring to. Maybe an object in shadow? If that's the case, there would be no cast shadows but only ambient occlusion and ambient light which makes it visible. If you're confused, i suggest you see Marco Bucci's channel, he has a vid talking about ambient occlusion.

  • @maracuja55
    @maracuja55 7 лет назад +2

    It looks ok but it might be necessary to say that this light source is synthethic. If it would have been light from the sun, light rays going to the cube would be all parrallels

    • @jasonboyd782
      @jasonboyd782 6 лет назад +1

      That's not true. Yes, in reality sunlight rays are effectively parallel on earth, but depending on the viewpoint of the observer, they may diverge a little or a lot. If you've ever seen rays of light coming through clouds in a fanned out spread, that's one example. If the sun is behind you and you look out at shadows of trees or buildings, they will converge to a vanishing point ahead of you. Basically I'm saying, parallel lines in 3D become converging lines when mapped onto a 2D plane like the image you're drawing.

    question,,,,,, how do u do the shadow cast when the light source is a moon or sun coz am kindah confused with how u join the intersection from the ground where the light source stands but in the case of a moon or sun, they don't have anything that holds the up in the sky so

    • @SketchMonster1
      @SketchMonster1  7 лет назад

      The sun is far far away the lines tend to be straight and not radiate from a single light source. I think i mention that in one of these perspective videos, Ill skim through it. If not , Ill mention it in a future video

    I need a tutorial for cast shadows with sun behind me. Such as, standing in desert early morn looking west. Everything so far is with looking AT the sun. I don't think there would be vanishing points for the sun. Help me out, I'm a 80 y.o. oil painter with this need real soon!

    • @LostSpringBand
      @LostSpringBand 2 года назад

      Hi Mac! Try putting the 'shadow vanishing point' very low, below the object you're drawing, on a vertical line going from the 'ground line', (a line parallel with the horizon, running through the 'station point' which is where your feet would be) up to the light source. The object should be slightly off centre in relation to this line, to get some interesting shadows. Even though you have the sun behind you, it will have an equivalent location on this vertical line, close to the horizon to represent the morning light. Then just follow the instructions he gives, connecting the lines radiating from the light source point to the object upper corners, and the shadow vanishing point to the lower corners, and you'll get long shadows on the far side of the object from you. The closer the light source is placed to the ground line, the longer these shadows will appear.

      As an artist/designer, being able to draw good lines means a lot.
      Rulers are tools, but if you can't draw a nice sketch without tools in a "1 minute elevator talk" then that's being no proficient.
