It's Easter Saturday 2024... car all packed ready for a 4 hr (+?) drive and the bonnet wouldn't engage. Mechanic closed. Yr video a lifesaver. Thanks so much... really glad I bought the torque set a couple of months ago for something else! Time to change my old Mark 6 2012 reg.
This is one of the best videos ever.....my partner is a key worker and would not drive the car without the catch working....me with putty hands followed your instructions.....its working ...now ...thank you your a star xxxx Tania
Thank you! 55 Yr old woman here, couldn't get the left 3rd screw off, so I wd40 the catch and wiggled it a bit and it loosened and now my bonnet has closed.! Took me 20 mins.. if I can do it anyone can :)
Thank you for posting this video. My brothers golf bonnet wouldn’t shut so we followed your procedure and had the same problem. A dry, rusty mechanism. With a healthy spray of wd40 and Vaseline it is now working. No more fretting about opening the bonnet anymore. Cheers.
Hello, can you help me please? I have similar problem. Open bonnet light does not show, when i open hood. Can i fix it with WD 40? I wanna try spray it on electric contact. Whats your opinion?
@@kinimod5 You can spray WD40 on the switch electrical contact, so long as you don't drown it in it. In your case, it sounds like the contact switch needs either a clean or most likely replacing. To get at the switch you probably need to remove radiator grill and other items. From here your best trying VW forums, other videos on cleaning/replacing the catch switch.
OMG!!! You're my first ever super thanks!!! Mate!! You've just made my decade!!! Thank you so much!!!! Massively appreciated!! Happy to help and so glad it's sorted for you! (I was just writing a reply to your comment calling you a Legend back!) Thank you so much!!

Thanks for making this video, I have the same issue on my 2011 sharan. Tried wd40 from the top with no joy, but your vudeo really shows what my problem is likely to be. Thank you :)
My pleasure, it's a strange problem isn't it? And so annoying when you've opened your bonnet to look at something else and then the bonnet doesn't close! Unbelievable. I'm glad to have helped I didn't know that it'd work on a Mk5 thanks for letting me know!
Thank you . I am of the exact same opinion . I will never buy a VW again so many issues. I am reverting back to my first car maker which was Japanese (Mazda)
The catch units on these are ok until they start to rust. VW moulded plastic over pressed metal parts for the actual mechanism, but when rust creeps under the plastic it causes the parts to expand and bind. Eventually the plastic will start to crack off the metal. Annoyingly, it can be a pig to get the unit out with the minuscule amount of slack on the microswitches cable, and if the switch pops off it's near as damn it impossible to get back into position with the catch fitted. If that switch isn't fitted properly it can also cause the car to cut out ! It needs to be pressed to think the bonnets closed, so as a stop gap "Fix" if you find yourself in trouble, you can pop the switch off, and wrap a cable tie around it to keep it pressed.
Yeah I had proper had enough. Opened the bonnet for one problem and then that happened, ended up with two problems.. ridiculous. I hope you manage to sort it easily 💪
Hi Tracey, thanks for your comment and for me it's the looks the cars look proper gorge. The fault in this video apart from the bonnet lol turned out to be the EGR valve, cost me 300 to fix. Less than a year later the mechatronic went faulty and cost me 2000 to fix (I've made a video about it) less than 2 years later, (last week lol) the car is now stuck in first gear. VW want 60 quid to get the car on the ramp, then 375 to check it. Then it's either a warranty repair or about 6000 for a new gear box. 😂😂😂😭 I'll never go near a VW ever again. Toyota forever, they don't look too good but they are soooo soooo reliable, bank balance will be beaut!!
So what happens with mine, is that when im driving the bonnet comes up. Not fully luckily as the latch bit still holds, so can i use this technique to hopefully sort the issue i have?
I have the same problem bonnet won't close unless we slam it down bought a new bottom part of the catch thingy to hold it down still wont work even if we slam it now and thats with a new button part. The bonnet will stay in place but wont lock and stay still theres a big gap

Very happy to help Shabnam 👌👌 please hit subscribe if you haven't already 🥳🥳 you could be my 900th sub woop woop! (Apologies for my 2year late reply lol)
I found this: The next step to opening the hood is probably where you’re caught if you’re here looking for instructions. Since there is a second catch, you can’t simply lift the hood like you might a trunk after popping it open. Slide your fingers under the hood and feel around by the VW emblem. Slightly to the right should be another release lever, which you simply lift up with your fingers or pull toward you as you pull up on the weight of the hood. Some models will stay up on their own, while others have a rod to prop the hood on. Pull up on this rod, lift it up, and slide it into the corresponding slot on the inside corner of the hood. Now you’re ready to check out that VW engine, or flaunt it to friends
the same sentiment as you - never getting a VW again. they have just gone downhill in the last decade. Cheap parts - cheap paint - springs continually breaking - battery always discharging
I agree with you entirely! I have another video coming up about Another fault I had on this car. It blew my mind!! And coated £2,000 to fix. I will NEVER buy a VW again.
@@ColdStream I've had Mk2 Polo - Bomb proof, Mk2 jetta - bomb proof, 1994 Passat - Bomb proof. (then Honda Accord - atomic bombproof) - then my 2009 plate Passat - heap of junk - springs break all the time, gear change is gummed up, heater switch replaced 3 times, Paint is fragile, alloys totally corroded, Windscreen is made with soft scratchable glass, battery always discharges in 2 weeks - auto elec can't find the fault. I hope my payout from VW for dieselgate is worth the wait :-) . My wife's 2004 Corrolla is still going strong - paint unchipped - alloys as bright as the day bought, windscreen is as clear as the day it was bought - no problems on ANYTHING except the exhaust which needs changing every 3 years - probably my gravel track , engine as sweet as the day it was bought. The seller pointed to the - 'Made in JAPAN' badge under the windscreen and all these years later it did actually did mean something. I'll look out for your video !!
Trust me I know the feeling, ridiculous isn't it, I only openned the bonnet to have a look, good thing is its a quite easy fix. I hope this video helps to sort it. ( personally I couldn't believe it wouldn't close, I tried to force it shut about 20 times before admitting it needed looking at)

If you can see the latch through any gap then spray some lubricant on it.
When you pull the lever to release the latch do you feel it affect the hood?
