Kristin, what you were describing during the video about the friendship and cooperation between these guys as being unique to the sailing community, may be true. However, what you were describing and what you witnessed was the normal behaviour of normal men who when they get together to help out someone else in need, are able to leave all crap at the door and will meet with great enthusiasm with no egos, putting all their skills and ideas into the pool and then drawing from that pool so they get the job done with no one getting their nose out of joint because their idea was not used. Men are normally great at creating a cooperative to fix things and get the job done with little fuss and no negative crap. There may be some noise during the job, because men like to take the micky out of each other and tell jokes, because it gets rid of frustrations and everyone enjoys these short moments together. Then all is celebrated with a drink and a cheer. Well done guys for a job well done, and well done Kristin for a great video record of such a community event.

Watching Fabio straightening that huge bolt on a log on the beach - you're ready to forge some medieval weaponry now! Make a catapult and mount it on the bow!
Had a similar thing happen on my Gemini catamaran. Didn't know the starboard rudder blade was completely missing until I raised the rudders while at anchor to protect rudders in shallow water. Still had the shaft but the fiberglass blade was no more 😮. Luckily I wasn't too far from a custom rudder maker who was able to fabricate a new one at a reasonable price.

Great show guys. You've had so much trouble with this boat. Rule of thumb is replace S/S at 7 years. However, Great Circle lost their rudder to metal fatigue so so much for that rule. Outremer did recall all 55 rudders which suggests bad batch of S/S. Anyway, like I said last video, luckily it was relatively calm, would've punched holes in your boat if you were in a sea. Hope you replace all bolts and pins... with Japanese S/S. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us
Thank you for the comment and for warning!! Seawind has provided a complete refit of the entire system with new and improved hardware. We just completed it. It will be on an upcoming video😊
How in the world did you know to carry that many bolts that big??? I can see everything else but who carries bolts like that? Lucky. Enjoyed the collaborative fix. Cheers to you both.
We knew that our steering system was likely to break down so we carried some spares, hoping not to use them, but knowing that likely we would have to. We are now in the process of installing a brand new steering 😊
@@HarborsUnknown Perhaps the answer is -if it can break, and you have space in the boat for a spare, then have a spare. Nuts, bolts, lines, assorted rigging parts, engine parts, don't take up much space.
Did you check that pin on the rudder linkage arm. That looks corroded also and be next. Obviously you should do the other side. That one below the water line could use a zinc too. As it is all connected I believe the galvanic action effected the bolts above the water line. All they need is moisture for a reaction and the metal to corrode. When it is connected to unprotected metal below the water line, through the casset, galvanic action can effect metal above waterline just through moisture.

Change the pins and all of the bolts on both rudders. It appears you have Chloride Stress Corrosion and possible crevice corrosion. One of the downsides of Stainless Steel and salt environment.
Thank you Peter! We have changed the entire steering system courtesy of Seawind with a complete steering refit with much improved and beefier system. Details in a future video! Thanks for watching and for commenting 😊😊
Breaking down around good cruisers is a blessing. It's a shame they made such junk bolts. I see so many boats showing metal fatigue around year 10-15. I wonder if electrolysis causes that?
We were super fortunate! The steering system on our boat was undersized and is currently undergoing a refit under warranty. Not sure about the metal fatigue on older boats.
It looks like that bolt was suffering from fatigue and it had been cracked for some time and it finally broke. When it comes to strength stainless steel is not the best choice for bolts. Since corrison resistance is so important for boat hardware there is alternatives to stainless steel. Inconel would be a good choice.
Thank you for watching and for your comment! I am not familiar with Inconel but will do some research. We have undergone a complete refit of the steering system with all new beefier parts!!
Great thumbnail. I can't wait to watch but have to do my own RUclips video! I am so sorry about the issues, but you have some very bright people, plus, your very smart too! I can't wait to see it! Heidi
We do!!! The system was originally under designed by the engineering firm, Gurit. The system had been audited and redesigned. A warranty replacement was scheduled by Seawind but we did not have the chance to stay still in one place long enough to have the material and the shipwright meet us. The refit of the entire steering system has been now completed while in Raiatea and it’s a beauty. All the older Seawind 1600 are being refitted under warranty and the new ones are fitted with the new system from the factory. You don’t fined many boat builders who do that! Thanks for watching and for commenting 😊😊
That is way too much drama for a boat of that price. I assume that the bolts are all A4-80 that broke? If not I'd suggest change them out on both sides to higher load rated SS.
Very good comment and on point!! This was an emergency repair and without the appropriate tools to turn the bolt in a very narrow space 🫤 now we are doing an entire refit of the whole steering system, courtesy of Seawind and we have a long sockets that reaches the nut. Thank you for watching!! 😊😊😊😊
Complete refit is underway as we speak!! New brackets new steering arms, all new gear being replaced by Seawind under warranty!! 😊😊 thanks for commenting
I am going to ask a dumb question, but why dont cruisers carry a small inline duct booster and like 2m of flexible ducting? I keep seeing people in the lockers complaining about heat or fumes and a small inline fan/duct booster would at least change out the air every couple minutes
That’s a very good question!!! 😊😊😊 The question is not dumb at all, we are dumb for not carrying it 😂😂😂. Truth is that out here it’s hard to find anything but as soon as I get to a place with stores we are getting something ! Thanks for watching and for your comment 😊😊

Awesome video folks i just thought of something getting plastic bottles attached to a good weight to outline the bommies.Just a landlubbers suggestion.
Awesome teamwork in getting that rudder repair done!! That did not look like a fun job! Overall I am not a fan of this rudder design it’s been too problematic for a bluewater boat.
It was a fun day!! You have a point about the rudder design, it has pros and cons. Definitely great for performance and the ability to beach the boat but a risk of damage with floating debris. I think that the new refit which you will see in upcoming videos solves all the problems with the gudgeons with a much more robust design. The fact the we have a blade sticking down in the water remains. The safest design is certainly a skegged rudder.
@@HarborsUnknown that’s great to hear I’m glad there is a fix for your rudder with such a critical component you can’t go on with having issues in the future. Yes you are totally right with the pros and cons with the design. Can’t wait to see how it all comes out!
This is the second major steering failure on a relatively new boat. Something is wrong. Either the sailplan is poorly engineered or the sails are cut wrong. Or you aren't trimming the sails well. Something is over stressing the steering system.
The steering system was undersized and is currently undergoing a refit under warranty. We knew about the issue but we’re hoping it would hold up until the work was done.

Truth is that out here it’s hard to find anything but as soon as I get to a place with stores we are getting something ! Thanks for watching and for your comment 😊😊
Obviously not a sailing channel! Everyone breaks boats, I learned this in the 1990’s as an engineer
You got that right, all boats break stuff! And yes!! We are a sailing channel😂😂😂 we did not come to French Polynesia by train 😂😂. Thank for watching and for your comment, and if you are new to the channel, welcome on board 😊😊
Awesome video folks i just thought of something getting plastic bottles attached to a good weight to outline the bommies.Just a landlubbers suggestion.
Thank you for watching and for commenting!! 😊😊😊
Tighten the nut instead of the bolt, limiting the torsion and failure rate on the bolts.
Thank you for the tip! I did not know that. 😊😊🙏
😄😄😄👍👍👍👍👍👍

It's about time Delos helped someone...Just kidding...

This has to be the be the best video of sailor cooperation that I have ever seen...- but see my my next comment...

You are south Africans....or at least he is
😊 one Italian, 2 Americans, I Swiss, I Norwegian 😊😊😊
Your sertenly having a few problems.
Yes, we’ve had our fair share of issues but hopefully that’s in the past!
