Great episode Mark! Peter and Rolf crushed it with the auto pilot. The best part, of course, is your wonderful parents! I love them both and wish them the absolute best. I'm glad you're home for the holidays and look forward to the next one!
First, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, didn't get the number but it's all relative. Massive shout out to Peter and Rolf, amazing AutoPilot install. That feature of following the chart is a game changer. Great to see Mom & Dad in this episode, they are truly awesome parents. The overhead can wait, will certainly improve conditions when finished. Mostly, enjoy your Christmas at HOME. After the effort you have extended this year, you certainly deserve a rest. Merry Christmas from the states to the whole Family.
That feature is indeed neat. Do have to optimize some things like controller how much left or right you want to be from the center. And perhaps an alarm when it is at a crossing. Currently the autopilot follows the waterway until the next crossing.
Thank you, Mark, for another outstanding episode of your refit, Kudos to Pieter and Rolf for their contribution, hope this exposure brings more patrons to their product. Happy to to see your Mum and Dad in this episode, they are absolute legends; enjoy the holidays with family and friends back in the UK.
I think you need to put a roof over the cockpit, that way when things get rough you have a place to control the boat. You just never know what the ocean is going to throw at you, it's best to be ready instead of not being ready and she decides to pummel you.
@ Aren’t you worried about that world conquering? I know I am. I just use them for household sensors and since I am old enough to have used an acoustic coupler to access the primitive internet I still regard them as something of a miracle.
@@reallynotpc Many professional applications use ESP32, some prefer the STM32. They are so cost effective and feature rich. They are very proven already.

Don't you just love it when a mum turns up, and then cleans everything in sight 🤣 but agree with the other comment that some sort of cabin over the cockpit to make sailing in rough weather a bit easier :)
I'm so accustomed to a monohull that I forget you've got two hulls in one boat, and lost track of the fact that you've been living in one and haven't really touched on the other in many videos. Or you have, but I lose track of which hull you're in. It makes sense, when you're singlehanding, to live all within one hull - sleeping quarters, kitchen, and head. The other hull can be the guest house and workshop? And you have the deck between the two as your patio, dance floor, and bathing beach! I remember seeing one of the Wharram designs with an optional, lifting walkway down to the water level for swimming access and recovery.
Mark you and you folks together make for a hilarious video. I got a chuckle out of your mom, dad, and you together. The boat work is moving along it's cold and definitely out of season for many projects, but keep your spirits up through the winter months because, honestly, all of your uploads are great. Thanks for sharing 👍
If I was you, I'd be looking for a scrap mast off a small boat for your boom. Much lighter. Use cheek blocks for reefing lines, etc. Much simpler and robust. good luck. She's looking good in yellow
The wt of that boom will need some heavy duty boom preventer kit . It's already at a risky height if it swings wildly, whilst tacking or was to break loose from a fixing. There's more than one sailor that's been killed maimed or seriously injured by a swinging boom. And the boats have been damaged or sunk in the following actions. A husband and wife couple lost there lives onboard their custom blue water monohull because a boom preventer ripped loose before they could reef the main.. the man suffered a compound fracture of his femur.. and despite having two experienced crew they couldn't get the main back under control ...and had to be helicopter rescued at extreme range in a storm ..they both died on the return flight to hospital.
@@WildlingSailing Any extra weight on catamaran is important!! It's reduced the speed and stability of the boat as you add weight. The opposite of a monohull that improve the stability with extra weight. (The weight of the boom)
Mark this is one of your best videos....that autopilot is brilliant so much tech and thought put into each component it should work flawlessly for some time. Loving the tech. Gotta imagine what this guy will build in the future , AI based sail trimming? An autopilot that can reef the sails? What a future that might be available for the solo sailer… what an increase in safety
Mark thanks for the great videos this year, good luck with the plans for next year and I am looking forward to the Tussle With Orcas episode. Easy enough to make a hot wire to cut the insulation if you’ve already invested in the materials. Set a fence and in a well ventilated area just pass them through the wire. Your Mum’s a gem - not even a little bit abrasive e!
I reckon I would have cut that foam into strips, whereby their width equaled the depth you needed. Then glue perhaps over a dozen of them up there before adding the sheeting.
If one is still worried about rot, buy swimming pool salt and toss it into the bilges and on to any ledges where water may have ben in the past. Osmotic pressure will pickle any rot or rot-prone area. Cheap and effective--but does not fix any damage although it stops it getting worse. I would glue polyurethane or PVC foam panels under those ceiling panels you are replacing. Strong and one can not have too much insulation, but it might as well add strength as well as insulation. In the tropics one will be glad one did. Repelling Orcas is probably better accomplished with underwater speakers and playing them Bach's music.
Good luck, Mark, with that engine and its relay. Good idea to take it back to England and get it to your Dad's workshop. I no longer have my parents - treasure yours!!! I have the impression you are winning against the dry rot fungus! Have a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends before getting back to the boat for the next stage. Nice video Mark. I am doing a refit of a 25’ diesel power boat and will likely order an autopilot like yours. Thanks for posting the link in the description. Cheers, Rog
