- The pump I bought from Harbor Freight does work, just not with a 3/4 inch garden hose, like the instructions said it would. I had to use 1 1/2 PVC drainage hose. Tip: test your pump and hose BEFORE you get a torrential downpour!
Dang, dude. You may have just solved my problem. I bought the same 1/4 hp “worry free” pump from Harbor Freight and mine doesn’t work either. I used mine to pump out a low spot in my yard and I attached a 3/4 inch hose. The pump will run for like 17 seconds then it shuts off. In about another 45 seconds the pump will cycle on for another 17 seconds.
I ended up buying the Harbor Freight (Drummond) 1/6 hp pump and it runs like a champ but you’ve got to babysit it because it will keep running even after you’ve pumped out all of the water. I actually dug a pit about ten inches deep then placed a concrete paver in the bottom so that the pump doesn’t suck up mud.
I’m going to buy some of that pool hose that you used and give it a try on the 1/4 hp pump. I thought that some internal on/off float might be screwed up but it may be similar to when you are pumping gas and the pump stops. Maybe a larger diameter hose is the ticket because a 3/4 inch hose does not.

The hose needs a weep hole so your "utility pump" doesnt get air locked. The 3/4 hose has internal diamater of like 1/2 an inch which doesnt do very well as a sump pump.
Dumb question, electricity and water don’t match so are these pumps safe so you dont get electrocuted?
The pump has internal ground fault protection, and the circuit I was plugged into also has a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
I need a generator for my sumpump...
I went through this back in 2021 and mine flooded 3 times before I paid $17k to fix it. What a disaster. I lost so much stuff
If you could buy a portable pump again did you find the best one? Thanks for sharing.
Why don't you build a flood barrier?
Did you plug the non working pump in before the water started to fill up?
No. Never run a pump dry.
@@stephenlutz123 mercury switch sir. And a sump pump needs an inch and a half discharge line with a check valve in it.
