One of those rare moments when your first impression is "what the hell is this watered down imitation of something that happened way before they were born?" and at around the half-way mark you realise it's the best thing you've heard in ages.
Well I’m 20 sec in thinking.... shit!..... half way now... some good bits, the little 60s small faces irishey pub bits cool.... yeah a cool little interesting band, but I just want a proper rock n roll band to break on thru and kill hip hop rap the way hair metal and before that the dinosaurs were rid of by punk and then nirvana
rory clynes You obviously know fuck all about music, so why are you here.... These boys are the sons of a brilliant session musician and have inherited a wealth of experience and musical ability..... You, on the other hand seem to be bitter and twisted and very, very, ignorant. Have a nice day you fucking Troll.
rory clynes Don’t be so cynical of something just because other people like it. The fact of the matter is this is objectively well written music; if you don’t like the style than that’s fine, but to say it’s badly written is wrong. Because it is well written.
They’re also technically gifted on bass, guitar, drums and keys. The song’s well structured and really well executed. Also, I really like the sound you mong. Go and gain your keyboard warrior badge somewhere else.
Micheal is getting ridiculous at vocals. So glad to see Brian back! I wouldn’t mind seeing one more Michael on drum performance either way another killer rendition!
I think Brian's vocals are far better... but Michael puts on such a great show that it's hard to overlook... to the point that I've had people confusing Brian's vocals and guitar solos as his... I really hope that bullshit doesn't get in the way of their relationship.
The moment when both brothers and the bass player are all soloing at the same time and it sounds just lovely. These guys are top-top-top notch players.
70's British rock impressionists. Ten a penny back in the day.....but there's next to nothing left that will get main stream media exposure in 2024 due to the lack of diversity so...we have to import it. Theres a whole bunch of Mick Jaggers and Rod Stewarts still playing pubs across the UK that have been denied just because they don't fit the narrative. How much more would you have to listen to if politics didnt get in the way?
Lemon Twigs........Vaudeville, Zappa, Sparks, Everley Brothers, Urban Country........ these guys are finding their feet. Hope for the future of music !
there are thousands of good bands out there already making the future of music and there will always be. what you`re trying to define here is where the hype train goes to
I completely agree that there are so many good bands around, but they haven't been getting the attention they deserve. Look just to European festivals like Pink Pop and Glastonbury's thinning out of promoting really good bands in the last ten years or so. Small venues are also having more and more trouble attracting good bands (money ) and being a support act means nothing anymore, unfortunately !
Why do people hate the band? The melody is great, The chord progression they used in this song is far complex and superior than your typical 4 chords pop songs holy sht. These guys are genius, at the age of 19 and 21 they've created one of the best pop albums ever created. I'm probably biased because i've heard all of their songs and it touched my heart, it gave me hope for the generation Z music movement. They experimented a lot and it gave them personality that no one in the mainstream music could par.
@@Linusgirthking well the complexity of this song is something worth of praise. Although, the structure of this song is unconventional and seems weird, it still manages to make it really catchy and that is something not easily achievable. It takes great amount of effort to create such music. It is true that complexity doesn't equal to good but to simply put what i've said earlier, the complexity of this song makes it great.
Still timeless...This song envisages for me 1978...Steven Spielberg...The Goonies....'Happy Days' (but set in 1978).... Hall and Oates....through a lense of sepia celluloid film....cycling over the crest of a hill in Southern California riding a Raleigh Chopper (But I had a 2nd hand Raleigh Grifter...and I grew up near Reading, England) ....Still, thanks for taking me to that place. G
Brilliant 👏 I was honestly just thinking American suburbs, evening sun, paperboy, the VHS cover of ET, start of Poltergeist, stand by me, the clothes worn by the extras on Jaws. I grew up near Reading too. If you haven't seen it already check out their performance on the Jimmy Kimmel - "The Fire", It's resurfaced.
Absolutely fantastic! Very little grabs my attention these days. This lot grabbed me and roughed me up. Great song, fantastic playing...clever....charismatic and great image. Yes some of it has been seen in the late 60’s and 70’s.....a bit of Jellyfish in there too but don’t they do it so well!! I have bought tickets to see them off the back of this performance!!
And how good was that gig too! (I was there on the back of seeing them on Jools Holland - never heard of them before). The end of Small Victories was probably the best piece of live music I ever saw - and I've seen a lot. Check it here: ruclips.net/video/LGvypY-bUO0/видео.html
I’m a huge fan of the Lemon Twigs and i have to say that I a lot of pleasure to listen to your great performance ! Real congrats mate , and waiting for the next LT cover from you 👍
Same. Ive had them on repeat for a week, keep thinking im gonna get sick of them but i don't lol Looking forward to seeing more from them in the futurr
One of those rare moments when your first impression is "what the hell is this watered down imitation of something that happened way before they were born?" and at around the half-way mark you realise it's the best thing you've heard in ages.
Exactly my reaction.
Charles Parish spot on mate! Feels like dunked ol' school rock suddenly rising up fresh with new life..
Rock can never be dead..🎸🎸
YEP! I recognize the references, but they are absorbed into something new and not just aped. Brilliant!
Absolutely this, it's a wonderful thing!
I can't stop watching this
It's an amazing tune, it grows on me more every listen!
Arabic Mike Me neither! I think it sounds better than the album version.
Christ, not an issue I’m suffering with...
These guys were under my radar years ago, should have listened to them earlier, they're awesome
After about 20 times of seeing this performance it just occurred to me how insanely good the bass player is....that is some mad finger work
Brian has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard and having Michael as the harmonies is just mind blowing
I absolutely loved this. They’re so talented it’s nuts.

@rory clynes You like James Bunt so your opinion doesn't count, also your name is a bit rubbish.
Great to see Jools' Nephew on drums
I have no idea how they didn't become huge, this song is just brilliant!
same with Jellyfish.
@@shredgardener9231 jellyfish 💗
Too clever/complicated for the hot poloi
@@shredgardener9231It makes me very happy to see the Lemon Twigs and Jellyfish mentioned in the same space.
I mean, they're a rock band playing on Jools Holland's show. That's pretty huge for an independent act!
I can't stop loving Lemon Twigs
One the best new bands in the last ten years. Original and good music.
It's like watching the old grey whistle test. Great..love it!
These kids are an absolute marvel to XXI century's music. They are clever in all the chord progressions and lyrics. It's insane what they do.
If you like this band you might like a band called The Doublejumps
Micheal is getting ridiculous at vocals. So glad to see Brian back! I wouldn’t mind seeing one more Michael on drum performance either way another killer rendition!
WOW best music on Jools so far , i went and bought a ticket for Glasgow gig when show ended 💞👍💞
Cool drummer cool kit open bottom Tom heads so 70s🤠
His back-vocal performance is stunning!
I think Brian's vocals are far better... but Michael puts on such a great show that it's hard to overlook... to the point that I've had people confusing Brian's vocals and guitar solos as his... I really hope that bullshit doesn't get in the way of their relationship.
That first section/solo riff is worth the price of admission on this earth.
WELCOME BACK BRIAN ! Best song of the year for me.
Amazing The Lemon Twigs.
They played this song as a support act for AM loved them!
My God Micheal looks good here. 2018 and when he was blonde are my favorite looks of his.
'The Lemon Twigs perform Small Victories on Later...with 70s Jools Holland on Drums'
I thought the same thing!
Love this. So many 60's / 70s musical references. Fascinating and original!
Saw this band in Leeds this week, they blew me the fuck away. They deserve to be HUGE. Best gig I have been to in years.
gained a new british fan after this! Awesome song
Best thing happened to me last year, and they're growing n growing. HEROES of good modern music.
2:47 u just see that manic genius energy. These Boys Will Be Around For A While, I Feel Like.
The moment when both brothers and the bass player are all soloing at the same time and it sounds just lovely. These guys are top-top-top notch players.

And Sailor
This is why I like Jools Holland. I would've never heard these
Best thing to happen in ages! Bits of Bowie, Jellyfish, and Pilot sprinkled all over.
In the minute 2:49 Michael hit the bass player hahahah
A Small Victory surely?! 😂

There's a lot of great bands out there right now man
Paul NOT The Real McCartney I didn’t get it at first but i played it a few times and they at so good and tight 👍
Probably because it's all been done before and it's a bit trite.
Love these guys wonderfully retro, proper music remind me a bit of the Kinks

God damn that final breakdown at the end is fantastic. I’d love to hear them just jam like that all the time
Something special about these guys
I love the fact that these guys know how to jam!!!!!

thumbs up purely for the jellyfish mention. what a band.
Wow, I am surprised. So exciting! Great musicians.
This band are special. Theyre gonna be massive.
Theres absolutely nothing else like them around at the moment.
i thank everyday my brother for showing me these guys. :) theyre amazing
Brilliant. Bought two of their albums as a result.
These guys are really really great.
70s-style rock is back? Solos? Interesting chord progressions? Memorable melodies? Ditching the post-millenial mopey-Coldplay-winging? YES PLEASE.
says so much that the first post-millenial band you could think of was Coldplay, who formed in 1996.
@KingExcrementus it doesn't change the fact that its still hard to find good bands like this.
Interesting chord progression indeed. It took me longer than it should have to work it out. Clever boys.
lol this comment is hilarious
Harmon Dushane It isn’t hard. You’re just lazy.
Going to see them at the Roundhouse on Wednesday. Can't wait.
Man freegin awesome. Good to see young kids making awesome music. Still have hope
Wasnt a fan of this band until i saw them live and now im a fan
Love the stripped-down quality of this performance.
I’m addicted to this song! Has been living in my head on repeat for the last couple of days
These guys are just fantastic. Big fan.
Roundhouse, Camden, London tomorrow night.....GLT. can't wait.

That was genuinely awesome.
Super talented kids; so much fun to watch👌🏻
These guys are getting better and better ♥
So good
Fantastic. It's a cross between queen guitar 10cc structure and Bowie with little dash of chas and dave
Love it
All derived originally from Beatles
Yes, Mick Ronson would likely approve of their musicality.
Absolute class.
This is so special
I’m a huge fan of the Lemon Twigs and i have to say that I a lot of pleasure to listen to your great performance ! Real congrats mate , and waiting for the next LT cover from you 👍
this song goes so crazy
These guys are legit 👍💯
This made me so happy😊.....best Christmas song by some cool dudes.
I have tickets for London 2019!!!! yay xxxxxxx
& I have tickets for Birminham 2019..yaaaaaaayyy.
Pure Heaven!!!
I'm here for Brian showing off his guitar capacities
I watch how fast and accurate his fingers move on that guitar and it's very amazing. They need to turn his parts up a tad.
Incredible!!!!
exceptional band
Just the BEST in the world today end 2024 ❤ love you so much 🙏🙏🙏
Nice to see the diminished chord making a comeback.
Why aren’t we talking more about how fucking insane that solo at the end is
This was incredible!!
Great band.
love the twigs
Great performance
What a discovery - thanks Stefan!!
Best band nowadays!
the lemon twigs are great, celebratory of 70/60s sound, not derivative. reminds me of foxygen.
Fun fact: Jonathan Rado of Foxygen produced their first album! Really blew my mind, when someone told me that in the commentary section. :)
This song "Small Victories" by the Lemon Twigs helped me get through 2018 a hard year for me.
Hell, some musicianship going on there
No idea what the fuck I'm seeing, but I can't stop watching and they're growing on me !
Amazing!
love this band!
Best version of SV I've heard yet, they are getting more and more nuanced in their live playing...
I really dig all four of these songs!
So so good 👌🙌🏻 it’s like Foxygen meets Queen meets Ariel Pink meets Gilbert O’Sullivan
love this song!
The best moment in my life, now!❤💎💎❤
The only thing that I can say, ICONS
Icons
Exaggeration
brilliant, best ''new thing'' I have seen in years..
I can't believe we are going to have the 70's back!!! Is this real life??
10CC are back, I absolutely love it
I was lucky enough to be in the audience when this was recorded, they totally stole the show.
THIS IS MUSIC
Rather ironically The lemon twigs are the light I was waiting for to shine my way
Awesome
Brian's guitar tone though!
Wow. Just wow. Sounds like Phil Ochs singing a Nilsson/10cc medley. And they look like virtuoso musicians. Astounding
I'm getting 10cc vibes from them too, great stuff.
indeed....refers to Outside a Small Circle of Friends
Fantsatic!
satic?
Just discovered them. Must have been living in a cave. They are so good. They remind me of the bands from the 60s and 70s which is a compliment btw.
Same. Ive had them on repeat for a week, keep thinking im gonna get sick of them but i don't lol
Looking forward to seeing more from them in the futurr
Did I just watch an Old Grey Whistle Test video from 1972? Also, Mock Turtles.
