In this video I rank EVERY setup move in Pokémon! (well mostly)
That's it. That's the whole description.
The puns are never too much... they are always too little... I yearn for them. More.
These puns take a bit to set up sadly
I agree. Need more.
Whole video of nothing but puns let's go
12:14 a notable fact about howl is that in doubles it affects both yoy and your ally, meaning you can consistently give attack boosts to pokemon that normally cant boost themselves
Yes, I thought that was the reason it was placed where it was. Imagine the horde trainer battles with 5 Poochyena in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire having all of them use howl together on the same turn 👀🐶
As S tier as Curse is, it definitely does add a little caveat: it has a secondary effect that's very situational. Basically it's a stat booster for 17 of the 18 types of Pokemon. Ghost types using this move instead turn it into a passive damage move which does 1/4 damage to the subject of the curse per turn, in exchange for 1/2 the user's health. However it doesn't take away from the stat side as much cause that only applies to roughly 7% of all Pokemon (or 73/1025). And it's so readily available that it's more likely used for stat boosting vs passive damage.
Howl was buffed to increas attack of both of your pokemon in Doubles, so it's a shared Sword Dance now.
well, a shared sharpen
@Moss_Dude i ment that the move increases attack by 2 stages total, just distributed instead of concentrated
Here’s a fun fact that’ll make Nasty Plot even worse. In Scarlet and Violet, they made it so you can’t get the TM for Nasty Plot until Area Zero, automatically making Calm Mind the better option for playthroughs of that game.
I’ve got three things to say.
1. We really dogposting with this one
2. I appreciate the Swalot respect
3. That call out during the Cosmic Power entry. Deserved
Swalot deserves ALL the respect
@ Truer words have never been spoken.
“Zazamenta”😂😂😂 love it
Howl is seriously underrated imo. It boosts its ally in double battles, works through Protect like Decorate, can't be redirected like Decorate can, and also boosts the user so that even a support mon using it can start hitting hard after a couple turns. It also has better availability than Decorate, even if it's mostly limited to canine mons. It's also great in that the boosts can be used on the turn they're applied, where for most setup moves the mon needs to boost turn 1 and then attack turn 2.
25:41 its also notable to mention that in VGC, there's a funny thing called Trick Room that inverses the speed order. Its a mechanic that is very, VERY common to where every team either has it, or has something to counter it. The speed drop from curse is actually super beneficial on slow/trick room optimized pokemon as it allows them to under speed other trickroom pokemon, like amoongus. Without the speed drop your curse sweeper could just be slept by amoongus in TR since most pokemon don't under speed it, but with the speed drop now you can just KO it before you get put to sleep. So, especially on hard TR teams, Curse can actually be more optimal then Coaching as an option.
This is a comfort channel fr. I love all the silly anime clips and gifs and dog pics. Great to watch while shiny hunting 😎
5:38 actually, shelter is hisuian goodras preferred defense boosting move in doubles!
for its leftovers life dew body press set, the extra pp from acid armor *could* come in handy if goodra ends up in a 1v1 stalemate against another stall mon, but it runs the risk of getting encored forever by a pokemon like whimsicott or ogerpon. with its absurd bulk, shell armor, and leftovers, hisuian goodra can sometimes survive ten turns of shelter, and encore ends/fails if the last move used is out of pp, allowing goodra to either start dealing damage with body press immediately, or repeat the process with life dew to ensure that its at full hp when the encore ends.
hisuian goodra and stall pokemon in general are not super common in vgc, so the extra pp of acid armor comes into play less often than the ability to break out of encore. so, yeah, shelter is actually good!
My spicy hot take is that swords dance is definitely better than dragon dance these days and given the criteria of the video, is the best set up move. With the hyper defensive and speedy metagame we have in gen 9, it’s better specialize in boosting one stat than boost two part way. Dragon dancers can often find themselves either too weak to break walls, or too slow to outspeed opposing choice scarfed pokemon. Mean while, swords dance gives the power to smash past walls immediately. Also like brought up in the video, there are more ways to mitigate the speed issue like scale shot, priority, sticky web, tail wind, and trailblaze. Especially with loaded dice now I gen 9, most pokemon with scale shot would actually prefer it if they had swords dance like Dragonite, Roaring Moon, Salamance, Kyurem Black, Dragapult, and gouging fire. If you look at the pokemon with access to both moves across different tiers like Crawdaunt, Sceptile, Rayquaza, Haxorus, and Baxcalibur, many prefer swords dance with the main exceptions being Mega Charizard X and Feraligatr. Finally, swords dance’s availability eclipses dragon dance’s by a wide margin. There are definitely many cases where dragon dance is more optimal but I find that more often than not, swords dance is the better move.
Honestly I like your take! It's really difficult to rank the setup moves because they tend to be situational. There are plenty of instances where the extra attack is better than the Speed buff. And that's a great point regarding Scale Shot... which is a something I referenced in my video yet DIDN'T mention during Dragon Dance! As long as we agree that Swords Dance is better than Nasty Plot we're chillin' lol
@@shepskydad yeah unfortunately Nasty Plot has much worse availability, and far fewer ways to make up for the lack of speed, so worse than SD in my book. Also notably, most high power (100+ bp) special moves are inaccurate like fire blast, hydro pump, and hurricane, making NP much less reliable for a sweep and get ohkos after one boost. Meanwhile, high power physical moves often have good accuracy and have instead a different drawback like lowering stats or recoil which also incentivizes aggressive plays and sweeping after a single boost since your moves weaken your sweeper.
On the other hand, special has much better no drawback moves like flamethrower, shadow ball, and moonblast which means that they are more tuned to a consistent sweeper who stays on the field and can afford to take multiple turns to boost. This is why I agree with you that swords dance is better than bulk up and calm mind is better than nasty plot.
Arguments aside I really enjoyed the video! Excited for more 💜
Personally, I don't think that availability should be a part of the criteria. I get why it was taken into account, but personally, I find it a lot easier to make an objective list if all of the moves are looked at equally. Putting shift gear and tailglow so low just because they are limited, seems wrong.
10:26
Jesus. I like listening to videos like this while driving, and I thought at this point a cop was following me lol 😂
Petition to change all sirens to slide whistles!
The king has returned and better than ever.
14:58 gotta love some bisexual bars
Rototiller is one of very few setup moves that Hardcore Mode Radical Red doesn't ban... And I *still* never used it.
A lot of these got buffed in ROM hacks, particularly in Elite Redux. Aromatic Mist is a pretty major example, giving +2 SpDef to the user AND ally. This move went from total crap to the reason my 6 Alcremie squad could even get past Phoebe's Eerie Fog team. (On that note, Decorate gets +2 Crit stages tacked on, and shows up on the VERY MUCH BUFFED Castform and Plusle in addition to Alcremie.)
One thing from my old fangame writeup: I made Defend Order a redirection move that also increases Defense, and Vespiquen becomes Bug/Rock. Elite Four Bea's team absolutely takes advantage of this, using it to draw fire from fragile attackers like her Mega Beedrill while setting up defense boosts to power up Body Press.
Golurk should get Shift Gear. It makes sense and would give Golurk a nice option after it lost Rock Polish (why).
I’ll take my favorite Victory Dance being in 13th. I’m just waiting for the inevitable power creep when they decide to give it to other Pokemon. :)
Howl is also decent in doubles because it boosts you and an ally! Also for coaching, it is really good, scarf Urshifu sets sometimes run it just to boost partners because it can win games if used on the right mon. Also also this vid was really good, and I definitely agree with the placements!
In my recent playthrough of Shield, my team included Alcremie, Cherrim, Polteageist, Falinks, and Appletun. I used a different Doubles strategy for each battle in Raihan’s gym:
vs Rain, Teatime to trigger Appletun’s Petaya berry + Ripen
vs Sun, Cherrim’s Flower Gift
vs Hail, Helping Hand
vs Sand, Decorate (so busted)
Can't wait to see how the z moves that raise speed are ranked
I think howl could have been higher since it also boosts your ally’s attack in doubles. Gouging fire has made great use of it in gen 9
Curse is also really good in Trick Room. It basically turns into Victory Dance
8:49
Thanks Shep. Now I have to go binge watch some DeliciousJames Pokemon Quizzes with you and Chris in them. (And by "have to" I mean "want to")
Decorate is really op, it's used on smeargle sometimes in dubs
You're welcome for the Nasty Plot Corviknight, Shep!
There are some flaws with ranking them this way as it doesn't really focus on the *best* setup moves, more so the most made use of. Dragon Dance is very good, but a Dragon Dance that also removes hazards and subs, aka Tidy Up, is just better. Same thing with Calm Mind and Take Heart. It's not bad to rank them like this video did, but just saying it feels a bit less definitive.
I totally get that! Tidy Up is an easy S Tier move, but it’s also hard for me to call it better than Dragon Dance because of availability. I will stand my ground on Take Heart because I hate Phione 😤
I'm only at Defense Curl at the moment, but if the Rollout synergy is why it's higher, I'm confused at the lack of mention of Withdraw and Skull Bash getting bonuses together. Unless...I'm misremembering and they don't get a bonus when used right after each other.
Because Skull Bash sucks.
Rollout and Ice Ball at least have the potential to be threatening. No one uses Skull Bash.
18:21 um maushold+tidy up+population bomb is like a one shot on everything
32:16 There are actually only 10 moves that increase both an offensive stat and Speed. I don't know why, but you put 3 moves that only increase your Speed in the list (Rock Polish, Autotomize and Agility).
Guess next is field set up being ranked. I wonder how moves that do damage and set up field effects would go
Also to add on howl also boosts ally pokemons attack in double battles which has accually had some use on gouging fire in vgc
Another potential use for Decorate on an opponent is pokemon with Contrary, the opposing Leaf Storm Contrary Serperior is suddenly much less threatening if it's contrary boosts are completely offset by Alcremie's Decorate lowering the stat
The big difference between phys and special attack is that there's a usually easier way to improve survivability on the phys side: Intimidate. Because there's less ways of improving special survivability, calm mind gets a lead.
I’m so
Glad to be early! Love your vid bro ur funny af
Yea u all are crazy with the hate smh can’t recognize talent
I enjoy videos like this partially just because I'm surprised how many moves I've never even heard of
In VGC Reg G there is a fairly common Booster Energy: Speed Gouging Fire + Physical Attacker combination which potentially immediately threatens KO's turn one and sets up the Gouging Fire next turn to threaten massive damage. Used to see some play with Arcanine as well :3
Funny thing about Clangorous Soul I love, is that it's a dance move, so paired with dancer oricorio you can get an omniboost on both your mons
... And so are the last three moves though sword dance isn't really useful
Ah, yes, Zazamenta. It pairs well with its sibling: the terror of gen 8 competitive, Cazian.
Hitting the like button just for the string of puns. Now to watch the rest of the video.
6:38 BOLDORE MENTION
15:44 💀💀💀
WE LOVE OUR ROCKY BOIS
Correct me if I'm wrong here Shep, but doesn't Howl raise the Attack of all of your Pokemon by one stage in a Double Battle? It has a niche on some doubles mons as a result.
I believe you’re right! I’m not a VGC guy so my knowledge there is lacking 😭
MY BRAIN
18:24 The mice are going to Population Bomb you to death sir!
Fun Fact; I most definitely AM in need of coaching!
-Love Peter
meditate shouldve been special dragon dance
Immediately thought of Chris when I saw Stuff Cheeks so imagine my surprise to see his stuffed cheeks make a cameo 😂
2:31 treasure town pokemon mystery dungeon that theme is my peace
0:27 At first i was like hold on that may be a little too much
then I rewinded it and was like ...he's about to *set up* a joke isnt he
I had the body press + cotton guard combo on my dubwool back in Shield. That sheep was a freaking monster of a cuddly wall. In single player, of course.
The spongebob clip was a bit grating, went longer than I would want
By the way if you want to get over your bias against doubles consider making your new flying type gym leader a doubles battle and use tailwind to dominate speed control. This also allows earthquake spam on something like gliscor.
Personally I disagree with how heavy you weighted availability. I think it makes sense as a tie breaker for for moves with the same effect (e.g., rock polish vs iron defense) but geomancy xerneas IS the meta every time it’s legal and pretty hard to say it’s not the best set up move in my opinion
I like using Charge, alongside Cotton Guard, on my Leftovers Ampharos. Maxed out EVs for HP and Sp. Attack, then use either one of the Defense-raising setup moves to make it bulky throughout a whole battle
You would use shelter because 1. Its less common for imprison but more importantly 2. Less PP means it takes less time to escape an encore loop. Solid in doubles.
Honestly would be fun to see two turn moves as the next one
Howl should be higher since it boost both mons attack in doubles making it a notable option sometimes
Prediction: Geomancy #1, because even though only Xerneas learns it, it is the most influential buffing move. It defines the mon and just annihilates everyone.
Runner up would be quiver dance IMO bc Volcarona. That’s it.
Meanwhile, commenting while watching - Rototiller and the flower thing could be really cool if it only affected your team and maybe did a double boost. But we shall see. Cool video
Had to take notifications off personalized because I had no idea a shepsky video came out id have watched it hours ago!
I thought 50 moves was not a lot at first, but there's so many 😵💫
If Amnesia worked the way it did in gen 1 it would be mandatory for competitive
17:55 yeah. Coaching rocks dude, pretty much every viable pokemon that can run it, from Urshifu to Snealsler, does. For a singles focused ranking, 20th is perfect, though if this was VGC focused I would easily put it somewhere in the top 5. Just look at the pokemon that get it on labmaus, even freaking Zamazenta has it as its 6th most common option.
tera steel levitate +6 +6 stored power chimecho moment (ft. thunder wave)
hit me 12 times in 30 seconds dude, calm down lol.
Martin and his solrock are pissed that cosmic power isn't 1
I strongly agree with almost all of these. i would swap around a couple in the mid tiers but that is just personal preference.
Currently playing Gen5 and I'm used to gen 4 moves which were through the bank far weaker. Stuff like shell smash or minimize blows my mind.
Furthermore, I played the games in German as a kid where Evasion was translated as "Escape-chance", utterly confusing me.
17:02 Was that 'silly little guys' a subtle 'Pokemon With Too Many Types' reference??
Well it could be but silly little guys is probably the best way to describe falinks anyway
If there is setup, there is hope
How did I not realise I missread the titial by the end of the pun train?
Focus Energy and Dragon energy: Am I a joke to you?
Curse is over bulk up imo because it can be used in trick room to increase your advantage!
22:15 Don't forget Tera Normal Boomburst after the fact!
Anyone who respects Coil is a good person in my book.
The puns weren't too much but the sound effect was.
More Gym Leader videos please!
burgerking foot letuce jumpscare
Hone claws on blaziken or hawlucha with high jump kick is scary
I’m still begging you to do a fossil or Dino themed gym build 😂😁
I think Geomancy should have been in S just based off its impact alone tbh but I respect the cajones
Also re: curse, it's incredibly poweful in trick room teams. That lowered speed does WORK.
CUTIEFLY MENTIONED LET'S GOOOO
I play only Random Blitz battles on Showdown and I got the cosmic power, stored power set on chimeco, and my opponent got mad lol. I pressed it once then he decided to switch to an electric type, I had tera ground, so we know how it goes from there...
Pfft those puns are so funny!
Another argument for dragon dance being the best: event though garchomp should definitely get dragon dance based on lore, they didn't give it because it would absolutely break the game.
Stored Power Cosmic Power Clefable is really good in OU. Unaware makes it’s so nasty plot Gholdengo can’t do much after +6 unless it crits
I think Rototiller should at least be above the next two after it. Obviously a terrible move, but at least it has the opportunity to create a niche situation instead of being completely outdone.
Shelter makes me so sad, man. I’m not talking about losing the evasion boost, that part deserved to be lost to the shadow realm, but it’s just so underwhelming.
Acid Armor and Iron Defense, which do the exact same thing, but have more PP. How do you let a psuedo-legendary’s signature move be outclassed by two moves it can already learn?
Why couldn’t it have boosted both defense stats, or had the evasion replaced with some healing? It’s not like Goodra doesn’t need the help.
Also, why did they not let Goomy learn it anymore? It’s such a weird change to make when they already gutted the move.
While Maushold has low attack.... Population bomb.
I live watching your videos in the background while pkaying fortnite because they added hatsune miku into the game
31:43 Don't count out Beautifly. I soloed post game Cynthia with just a Beautifly in BDSP
To much time spend with peter quiz have their consecuences for many puns 😂
How viable would a signature move be on a pokemon with all 80 stats that gives a double omni but has 50% chance to instantly faint pokemon?
S tier 50% of the time F tier the other 50%. There you go
ERM ERM SMEARGLE CAN USE ALL THE “EXCLUSIVE” MOVES. Got you good didn’t I husky man
touché Gio... touché
Hisuian goodra bias ftw
3:36 but... you can Tera Grass in doubles... and buff Wo-Chien! /j
Dragon Dance would be better if Arcanine got it
12:15 Zazamenta? He Italian now?
27:20 Electricwindgirlfriend mentioned, Her content is peak
Uhm why would availability factor in to how good an individual move is. Surely by ranking them it makes sense to rank them in spite of availability. Like if a pokemon had the option to chose between a C tier move and an A tier move of a similar style the A tier move should always win for the same pokemon. Otherwise the C tier Move is the better move and thus should have the higher ranking. Fillet Away is an example of this. It doesnt really have any use cause the pokemon that utilizes it isnt that impressive but if you put it on a snorlax it might be a pretty good move.
I would like to see a ranking of flying type moves, cause most of them stink
