As a siege player can confirm about shadows, a light source can be in the most perfect spot for you to start prefiring and call your team over for support
The best way to practice for competitive play is to follow whatever the standard settings are for most competitions so you don't end up getting screwed over when it counts
In my opinion from years for playing with shadows off in many fps games, if u can see a persons shadow u can hear their footstep long before the shadow
I don't know how turning balloons off will help you become a better player. If you have to turn down graphics just so you can get rid of distractions doesn't make you a better player it just means you can't position yourself in areas without distractions.
also for some support heroes: on mercy, mess around with ga/beam sensitivity as well as ga prioritization (facing only, prefer beam, prefer facing) on lucio, turn backwards wall riding on on kiriko, turn toggle ofuda off (so you can toss 2-3 heals without having to go through the full 5) and turn swift step sensitivity up (so you can teleport out quick). i personally aim significantly better on kiriko when swapping her primary and secondary fire, but that's more personal preference on zen, consider swapping harmony/discord to your scroll wheel
Also go to NVIDIA Control Panel -> Manage 3D settings -> Program Settings -> Select Overwatch in the dropdown. Set: Low Latency Mode: ULTRA, Image Sharpening: 0.50, Preferred refresh rate: Highest available. Especially Image sharpening is an eye opener. 👀
FYI the latest version of the Nvidia drivers 497.09 has REMOVED the Image Sharpening setting for owners of newer GPUs, replacing it with Image Scaling+Sharpening on graphics cards that support the feature. So if you have a newer video card, you can't adjust the image sharpening on its own any more. You have no choice but to lower the render resolution as well (IMO, this looks bad). With any luck, Harbleu will complain about this next time he does a stream and then a bunch of people will demand Nvidia restore the feature to everyone in a future update.
