It is safe to say that Dennis Franz had the role of a lifetime as police detective Andy Sipowicz for the show's entire run. No wonder he retired afterwards when NYPD BLUE left the airwaves in 2005. Dennis Franz knew darned well that he'd never get a role as good as that of Detective Sipowicz, starting as bigoted drunk to honorable family man. It took a while, but he got it done. NYPD BLUE: best cop show ever.

Indeed to all of this. You three say all that needs to be said about the show and about Dennis Franz. I watched this liive starting in the 90's, often taping it when I could not catch it live. I'm sure I missed some shows. Maybe 5 years ago I watched it again on Netflix. The beauty was that while I recalled most of the characters and moments of some stories, for the most part it was like I had never seen it. It was all fresh. By the end of that second time watching, I had come to understand that the story ultimately was the tale of the redemption of a man, Andy Sipowicz. I am currently three episodes away from the end of a third time through, watching with a partner who had never seen the show. I started this third time with that knowledge, that the story was one of redemption, and I could keep that in mind as I watched that story develop during this third time through. That added so much to my appreciation of the series. And for the most part, it was as fresh as the first time through. Certainly the best cop show ever, and second only to The West Wing as the best network series ever.

1:11. This scene cracks me up because it reminds me of something that happened on this job I had twenty years ago. We had just gotten done measuring up a house and my boss was doing the paperwork. I started munching on a bag of Dorito's and he gave me the same look Andy had here. I stopped chewing and then, involuntarily, let out a loud belch. He glared at me for a second and then busted out laughing.
    Tony, I really miss you.

Well you know it's a very real thing with people. With bigots they may dislike or show contempt for someone in a group they mock or dislike but there's always one or a few that they actually grow to like and that's their exception. With Archie Bunker it was Lionel Jefferson and with Sipowicz it was Gay John. People are flawed but have layers.

Some great moments certainly from the final years but the best Sipowicz moments were during the first 8 years, not the final 4 IMO. The pairing of Dennis Franz with Jimmy Smits was inspired, as was the writing when David Milch was involved and hands-on.
Many of my favorites were not even heated, such as when Bobby Simone yields to Andy Sipowicz's radio station preference - an oldies station, and the two end up singing Duke of Earl.

Andy Sipowicz was the greatest character on any crime drama ever! He was tough, smart, loyal and could be dead serious or funny as all get out, with a dry sense of humor.

I've watched some pretty good cop shows over the past 29 yrs but NYPD Blue-It's the BEST, in a league of its own, untouchable-Show that has us watching what we watch today b/c Steven Bochco, David Milch, & ABC decided to take some risk and put on a show like nothing we'd EVER seen before now look what it has given us so everytime I hear somebody dog NYPD Blue I'll say What's your favorite show? They tell me I always say Well guess what that shouldn't be like it is, if it weren't for NYPD Blue!

Shield is about cops being bad and corrupt. Wire is about society being broken. Nypd blue is about personal growth. Different themes.

One of my favorite series of all time. Used to watch this on CourtTV back then and I also used to watch this on ABC as well. It was the only good show on network TV due to uncensored swearing and uncensored nudity (which sadly can now be seen on cable TV for the most part). Plus, I loved Andy Sipowicz, he was such a great detective.

For me the best scene of Andy is when he cam back after the murder of his wife, John cry and ask forgiveness because he can't stop the murderer, but John was shot in trying and Andy explain to John that was a so courageous act ! Andy thanks John for this, even if that was not sufficient to save her wife. John risk his own life for that and Andy thanks him for that. When you know who is Andy in the beginning of the TV show this is a fantastic change. Andy thanks a gay collegue ! This is one of the best scene of Andy for me, soo much emotion !

Hey, thanks for uploading these clips! They're all great scenes performed by one great actor! Dennis Franz did an amazing job.
I recently discovered this show and it was by accident too. I remember when it was on tv, but cop shows or even New York have never interested me. Here I am, how many years later, and I see that at the time I was missing a great show. No matter though. H&I tv plays 4 shows in a row every weekday starting at 1am in the morning.
I've taught myself to go to bed early, wake up at 1am, watch Sipowitz for 4 hours, then go back to bed for a couple more hours before having to go to work. It's a rough schedule, but it's worth it!
    Thanks again, kesudor!
