  • Older than the dinosaur, the kanakana is a taonga species for Ngāi Tahu whānau especially those from Murihiku like the Blair whānau. Kanakana migrate from around August to the end of October swimming up the Waikawa and Mataura rivers on route to their spawning grounds upstream.

Mean whanau, I lived in Murihiku in Mataura and as i see this vid clip, I think i was very priveleged and spoilt because i could guarantee a feed everytime we went to our spot on the mataura river.. they were alot of fun to harvest, but they were a very sacred fish, wow to the age of this kai o tangaroa... million year old specimen.. plus im proud to say Ngai Te Ruahikihiki is my hapu and I am too, Ngati Mamoe, Ngai Tahu Waitaha as well... Nutira Tawera Whanau no Taumutu. Kiaora mai koutou katoa.
