I loved this season but I also know that everything you say is true and can clearly see how the vision you laid out would make a season 2 a cohesive storyline. Hopefully they get a chance to give it another shot
Considering how most places I look online the arguments about shows such as She-Hulk devolve into personal attacks I fully appreciate both the disclaimer and your ability to still provide a very well balanced review containing good constructive criticism but also highlighting parts that stood out.
I totally agree, Andor, She-Hulk, Obi-Wan, etc. might be better presented as several feature length tv movies; like the network produced "movie of the week" from the old days of TV broadcasting. Werewolf By Night could probably be a proof of concept for this. To potentially solve pace and/or tone issues there would be individual shorter features with a cohesive independent theme that belong to a larger anthology title like She-Hulk or Andor, yet still ultimately contribute to a larger story arc. Currently it seems like D+ is taking movie concepts and stretching them into episodic TV shows; some of the pacing, and sometimes tone, is lost in the translation.
The finale was surprisingly creative and fun but, as you talked about, it also felt like a cheap sidestepping of any story. I honestly can't remember the last movie or series that had me swinging so drastically between like and dislike from moment to moment.
8:08 I didn’t mind at all. I like the space this show is carving for itself. Low stakes, silly and fun. They might’ve thrown the plot out with the finale, but they did so through the furthering of She Hulks character. And “Who’s show is this”? Hers!
I found the show got better for me around episode 4 and continued to improve. Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think all of the Disney plus shows are pretty flawed but I think I actually like this one more than most, might be a bit of bias cause of Matt Murdoch too though.
She hulk was the worst show I have ever watched. It sucked from start to finish. The 4th wall breaks where not needed, leave it to Deadpool. It was just a train wreck all around
@@storyofm6820I have watch a lot of shows and I’m not big fan of this show, not the character. I didn’t mind the characters it was just the way it was written. How can someone in the MCU know there in the MCU, like wtf is even that.
The end was weird, even by She-Hulk comic standards I feel. Though it was very much a She-Hulk thing. The series as a whole didn't really do it for me. I liked the cameos (loved Daredevil, though given we have a long, rich history with him it was to be expected) but liked the moments we dive into Jen's personality and emotional standing much more. The humour wasn't really my speed, but thats okay comedy is subjective. I DO love how they've changed Abomination, he's fantastic as the reformed monster. Though I don't know if the show did enough for me personally to get a second season. I guess Harvey Birdman spoiled me for great lawyer comedy. That's still the benchmark.
What physically happened in the real world of the show though? Why was the Abomination even arrested when he never changed into the Abomination in the end?
Why was Jen arrested!? She broke that media wall. At best that’s property damage, and maybe menacing. Surely not enough to get locked up in super hero jail 🤦♀️. It’s not like she went on a rampage in Harlem……😉
Dan hits it on the nail. I really enjoyed the fourth wall breaking through the season but the finale had the laziest use of it. Sure the meta commentary is very clever but you can't use meta commentary to completely whisk away the conflict and tension that you spent weeks building up without a satisfying payoff. That's like Deadpool going "meh, none of this is real what's the point" half way through the film and then cut to credits.
Nice and fair review! I was also thinking about the whole Josh storyline. He was at her friend's wedding, so it seems like she could have tracked him down. I liked the show overall, it needed some help in the ways you mentioned, but it was fun.
Yes, JOSH?!?!?!?!?!?! My only note is that they blew off the layered, multi perp sex crime. That is so messed up. Some have survived coercion, manipulation, and the crime of revenge porn - and this was such a disservice.
I agree. For me, the issue was most notable when they didn't explain how Jen got out of her legal issues, which weren't directly tied to the actions of Intelligencia. She walks away from some very serious problems, including doing the exact thing that Tim Roth does in changing into her other form, and has no consequences. I wanted her to get out of trouble, but not by hand waving everything away in the last few minutes...
I liked this review you did. It was fair and it stuck to the judgment of the show and not what you wanted or expected. That is something that many people who do these reviews tend to do way too much.
I will reserve judgment on "Andor" as a whole although through six episodes I have loved it. But I do agree that this season of "She Hulk" was uneven, and that two or three episodes probably could have been zipped.
First video of yours I have watched; very refreshing to hear *reasonable* criticism, free of vitriol. I didn't agree with all of it, but I can respect it. I thought the season was a lot of fun, and I agree the chemistry between Jen and Matt was great and far beyond anything I ever expected. Some of your points were valid, even if in the end I was willing to just give the show a pass because I enjoyed the craziness so much. And I didn't notice until the almost the very end of the video that you were wearing a Florida State cap! Go Noles!
i think the end was dissapointing, every conflict was magically resolved and we dont really know how? just because she said so to kevin? no we didnt need the randomly thrown in big brawl but like what even happened
Yeah, she was talking to Kevin about changing the ending and doing something different....but then they just skipped to the resolution and didn't actually show a "different" ending confrontation.
I'm actually really mad about the ending. The fourth wall breaks were fun and all, but I feel like this did a huge disservice to people who have experienced revenge porn or doxxing. I was already kind of upset that there was no trigger warning for episode 8. It felt almost exploitative because it is not the type of plot line you'd expect in a marvel show, so you aren't prepared for it at all. It was like they did it just for the impact and not to actually deal with such a sensitive topic. I'd already been worried they left it too late to be dealt with properly in the final episode, but I guess expecting them to even deal with it at all was generous of me. They literally just used SA, which was the most shocking thing they could think of, as a plot device to get Jen in jail for absolutely no reason because they undid it all within a few minutes anyway.
I could have used maybe 5-10 more minutes in this episode. If after all the meta stuff they returned to "convention" scene and had Jen resolve the conflict in that moment, I think it would have been much more satisfying. Jumping to the arrests afterwards made it feel like a piece of the puzzle was missing. Overall, though, I liked the season quite a bit.
I enjoy your work, thanks for adding to the season. I really liked She-Hulk, it was FUN with work, political, economic and upcoming election stress it was a relief to just have fun watching a show. Enjoy and be well.
It's pretty obvious that the series creators didn't care about the over all plot or behind the scenes villainous machinations. They really just wanted to have fun poking at super hero story tropes while also sending up 90's lawyer shows. That was both frustrating and fun. I liked the final 2 episodes best, but I also really want to see Jen Walters/she still played straight when she shows up next
When any and all criticism is vilified, literally critics are the villain of the show, it leads to these self righteous and self centered stories and characters that are so far removed from reality that no one can relate. How is this a hero show? Did Jen save/help anyone besides herself? Marvel has truly lost its way
I laughed out loud when Jen asked when we were getting the X-Men. Was definitely an interesting take on a season finale but I liked that it purposefully wasn't the big meaningless CGI battle of people with similar powers. I also totally respect that Dan and others didn't much care for it. I think She-Hulk, more than any other Marvel show, was made for a very different audience than the usual Marvel crowd. I appreciate that they're branching out and I think it's totally fine for people to respectfully(!) decide that it's not a show for them.
They knew going in that the were deliberately writing a bad show/ending and to get over that fact they just point it out and lazily re-write the ending. Absolutely pathetic. They didnt know how to write the ending and it invalidates their own show and maybe MCU.
I haven't watched the show, and this is the first I'm hearing of the ending, but from what Dan says and shows here, it seems like it borrows a lot from the ending of Grant Morrison's Animal Man. But in that comic, it's not done as comedy, and it resolves the story in a way that's not flippant. It's unique and hard to explain. I strongly recommend reading it. 👍
That is basically what Andor is though. Every 3 episodes is a 2 hour movie. I'm glad they did it this way though because it means I get to savour it a bit more. I'm sure they want to extend how long people talk about the show for so it's a win win. At least for me and Disney+. Although they probably win slightly more than I do.
so the villain of the show are the "haters" and the "trolls"..... i see when movies and shows do "aaah, we know what you're gona say, so we are aware and immune to criticism", this doesnt work, this just results in being patronizing and uninteresting
This She-Hulk series reminds me of all the essay's I used to write in school and how I never knew how to end them, so I'd just write (PLOT TWIST) ".....and then I woke up." I was 7-10 years old when I did this, not grown adults who get paid handsomely to write for a juggernaut Hollywood movie studio.
I understand your frustration with the show, I also had some reservations in the beginning of the show. However the more I watched the more I realized what they are going for the show and was able to appreciate it for what it is and for the greater MCU in general. This show I believe is first and foremost a comedy. So I believe that the people at Marvel wanted to focus on that above all else. So if the story has to suffer some for the sake of comedy I'm willing to change my perception of that and enjoy the show. At least in a comedy show it makes sense to focus more on the jokes and not so much on the over arching storyline because how often does a sitcom payoff a setup earlier in the season. If it was a greater show I believe it could have been able to wrap up storyline and character plots, but for what I viewed as a sitcom I was pretty happy for the season finale we got because I believe this is exactly how the character She-Hulk would resolve an issue like this.
I thought just about everything with Tatiana Maslany was great. Everything else was a hot mess, and that last episode was the biggest "I don't know what to say" I have seen in television in quite some time - but I loved it for leaning all the way in to what it was.
This is one of the most balanced reviews I've seen so far. I wasn't a big fan of the show either and with the backlash of "If you don't like the show, you're a misogynist" made me want to find the opinions of others. Most other reviewers are far more diametrically opposed, either calling the show garbage and man hating or the best show to grace the platform. You critque it for what it is, and it's appreciated and refreshing🙂
Where is this backlash? I haven't seen a single comment pushing the notion that people who don't like it are misogynistic. I'm all over Facebook and RUclips and the comments I see are "I know people hate it but I like it" "I like some of it but it's not the best overall" and "THIS SHOW HATES MEN AND ISNT EVEN COMEDY AND SHE HULK IS THE WORST THING EVER" I feel like I'm in the twilight zone with people pushing this narrative that everyone is called misogynistic for not liking it. Unless we are talking about occasional responses to the third type of comment I mention and then....who is surprised by that? And why are the responses to those insane comments becoming the issue and not the insane comments? There's literally someone in the comments complaining about how she hulk dated and slept with people and how horrible that is....thats literally INSANE but we are making up a "your a misogynist" backlash? Weird.
I’m not angry. I’m just sad. The thing that pulled me from a heavy suicidal phase years ago (GOTG1 trailer gave me something cling to and wait) is now filled with writers and directors who actively antagonize and belittle their audience. MCU no longer feels like art or story; it’s just a production line pumping out low effort/low quality products.
Great review, Dan. Your thoughts are always expressed well and with sincere focus for whatever project you’re addressing. As for my opinion about She-Hulk, I can see the inconsistencies that you’ve pointed out and agree that there’s room for improvement if the show gets future seasons. Overall, it was something fun I looked forward to watching each week - something that I strongly credit the cast for. They made even the odd detours enjoyable hang-outs. And while the fourth-wall-breaks in the finale was a little lazy in terms of story-telling, but I loved everything after she escaped from her own show. It was the kind of zany rule-breaking that only comics could get away with back in the day
im actually a bit sad it got over. its like light tv that sort of works for me, ended in a weird way, but i did enjoy the ride. its probably better than the all too serious shows that barely go anywhere (i did like wandavision though).
It had its moments and many of the “critics” they are poking at go to far and have shared inaccurate “leaks” but I am sick of attacking the audience in general, because like it or not those critics represent a lot of the audience.
I do agree with your points and can see your perspective, but I still really enjoyed the show despite the flaws. I appreciate that we have different characters and that they're trying to do different things.
I liked the show but really hated this final episode. I don't mind the 4th wall breaking but jumping through the Disney+ menu and discussing with K.E.V.I.N. I found utterly stupid, copping out of actually ending story plots. DD falling out of the sky, superhero pose felt really out of character. I am not so sure about a Disney+ DD show now. If it does go more the Netflix route it feels like two different DD's. Oh, and that shoehorned Hulk reveil in the end? Blegh! It would have worked as a after credits scène, which none of the episodes had.
Dan, out of all the critics of this show I have watched on RUclips, you are the only one who agrees with me that the retro-intro and the 4th wall break ending were the best parts of this episode. I also agree with most of the points you make about lack of character development, dropping plot points, etc.. But, overall, I think the biggest problem with this show is it's not funny. I mean, I agree about Blazing Saddles -- way back then I felt the ending was a bit of a letdown, but we all forgave them because of the hilarious ride we had had with the movie up to that point. She Hulk tries to be clever and funny, but just fails so much at it. That said, I like the character Jen, her alter ego SH, and I hope it gets a second season -- with much better writing.
The ability of the show to "predict" the trolls was an interesting point and certainly worthy of being a component of the story. After Captain Marvel, I wouldn't say that you needed a crystal ball to call that one. I had no problem with the lighter, more fun tone of the series. I agree that story and character is priority and they shouldn't be sacrificed for gags.
going "meta" is a tight rope. It can be fun, it can also feel like a cop-out . This felt more like the later. I like Tatianna as Jen/Shulk she was fantastic as usual(Orphan Black 💓) but I agree with you mostly, the storytelling lacked focus. I was HAPPY to have a Marvel show with more then 6 eps cuz I think most of them have suffered from just ok n rushed Finales, but they sadly stuffed She-Hulk's 9 eps with alot of fillers.
She-hulk has been my favorite MCU show by far. It was the one show where I didn't feel like the middle 4-ish episodes were all filler and dragged. But all of your critiques are valid, Dan. Good analysis.
I've watched a lot of reviews on She-Hulk and Dan's take is the one that matches mine the most. It's surprising how different all the reviews are. Would it be fair to call this show the most divisive out of all the Disney+ shows?
Dan, fantastic review. We’re very much on the same wavelength about the show (though, I believe I may have had a little more fun than you did). I think this show could have used that 18 episode order that Daredevil got so that the show could have room to possibly feel a bit more even.
@@AnferneeMyers So them making She hulk into a whinny character and disrespectful and doing the same bad things that happened to her and not even trying to actually adapt her character right from comics is good characterisation…. Yeah i actually hope you are joking
You’re a fair reviewer and I respect your opinion a lot and I do fully agree more that all of us as fans are on this rock together This show just wasn’t it from start to finish for me, the writing just bad and got worse and worse and worse, She-Hulk being a lawyer comedy show to me failed. This final episode was a nail on the coffin……just making me more and more less of a MCU fan, but somewhere out there it’s making someone’s day happy, atleast their is some good in that.
This show is so disappointing because I really want to like it, but it kept missing the landing as the series progressed. There’s great moments sprinkled in, but the majority of the episodes felt like filler and a lot of the humor fell flat.
There's an episode of the Spider-man animated series from 1994 where Spider-man goes and meets Stan Lee in the "real world". I don't remember exactly but I feel like it was a way for them to wrap up one of the show's more convoluted plot lines. This kind of thing happens all the time in the comic books. I didn't really enjoy a lot of the moment to moment stuff in She-Hulk but a lot of the larger ideas felt much more comic book-y than the MCU has ever felt and I appreciated it for that. However, I can't disagree with most of what Dan said because I liked the show much more when I wasn't watching it. Comic book sensibilities are great, but a tv show needs to act like a tv show. That Stan Lee episode of Spider-man was also incredibly clunky and narratively unsatisfying
Fantastic, balanced analysis. I honestly don't understand how anyone can misinterpret Dan's criticisms as being the same as those who have a clear bias. I can only assume they judge his opinion based on his expression in the thumbnail and make up their own reasons. Apart from two episodes I enjoyed this show more than anything else Marvel have released this year, but even throughout I was definitely picking up on issues. They have a clear opportunity to make this season better by addressing its issues in season 2, IF The Mouse lets them. Skaar's reveal really frustrated me, because it was so fleeting and unnecessary that they could've left it out entirely, rather than conform to the "need" to set up the next thing. And absolutely, Marvel Studios can't call themselves out and pretend like they're in on the joke of Marvel tropes and do nothing about it. (Although I loved how K.E.V.I.N.'s lens had a sun shield that looked like a baseball cap.) Overall, it was enjoyable but not good enough. Disney+ subscription cancelled.
nice review and it was interesting to hear it from your pov!! I think this is the first time I've disagreed with your review tho hahaha. maybe because I went into it very cynically. but I was surprised and found it very fun and light hearted. it does have issues like youve already mentioned but even with them I think it'll be a a personal fave MCU show for me 😂
While I really enjoyed the huge fourth wall break in this episode, I can’t help feeling that, in the end, there was zero resolution and consequence to all of the plot lines set up throughout the show (e.g., her blood being stolen, Intelligencia’s public assault on her image, etc). They could’ve maybe improved the episode by having an actual scene in the lodge after K.E.V.I.N. changes the original one, so it feels like the season culminated to ‘something’…instead, it just randomly cuts to subsequently after that, and we’re left going, ok, I guess she just dealt with it somehow, which is hugely anticlimactic. Overall though, I feel like the finale just reinforced how inconsequential the entire show has been, and ultimately how disappointing it was, which is unfortunate.
With Todd being arrested, it seems highly likely, almost certain, that Intellgencia is shut down, and he is being charged with things related to that. So, I don't think that's a hanging plot thread. I agree on the blood though. I enjoyed the 4th wall break to finish it, but I do feel like it left that bit in a weird limbo.
I was also uncertain if she also “rewrote” herself being arrested and going to jail in the first place. Because when it cuts back to Todd being arrested she’s in her she hulk form and no one questions it. Plus as you mentioned, Is her blood still out there? Which also, when the hell did Todd even get that?
People excuse the fourth wall break neglecting the story by “it’s what she does in the comic idiot, they’re being faithful,” and if that’s true then I don’t want to read the comics. You can’t just drop the entire show to do a skit where the writers themselves point out every problem in the show and MCU for the lols, that doesn’t make it clever it just highlights the problems even more

As per usual, I agree with everything that you said. Another great review, Dan. Keep up the great work.
It was the worst finale I’ve ever seen. Subjectivity really has nothing to do with the fact that the artistic choices made we’re just atrocious.
She hulk was the worst show I have ever watched. It sucked from start to finish. The 4th wall breaks where not needed, leave it to Deadpool. It was just a train wreck all around
@@solarmaru49 cringe.
@@lmtrc7830 You don't watch many shows, i guess. I can't think of a more inoffensive, whatever type of show to be this angry about.
@@damongirls9528 no why was The Abomination arrested as in the new ending he never transformed
@Shane yes, I agree with you. I’m just asking why Jen, too, was arrested? She didn’t even hurt anyone! So much in this finale made NO sense 🙄
@@damongirls9528 the fact she had no control and Hulked out made her a liability.
@@damongirls9528 Agreed. And then after the 4th wall break she’s out of jail/walking up the steps to her job again like nothing ever happened.
There’s so many movies I’ve seen reviewers totally trash online and after I watched really enjoy so make your own judgment, thanks Dan!
Balanced and fair feedback. If they renew it I’d give it a second chance.
damn, you are a glutoon of punishment. lol That would be pure torture for me to watch this again with these writers.
Damn you must be a masochist. It was a pure torture except for daredevil
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 and yet Dan says it's the people who don't like the show that are bombarded with ridiculousness because of their opinions LOL
Damn, hands-down the most objective vid on she-hulk. You special, myman, new subscriber unlocked.
Totally agree with Dan on every aspect. He's one of the very few reviewers I tend to agree with.
Also the Kevin part where he talks about the She-Hulk effects being too expensive so instead they focus on Kevin, which was a digital effect himself~
I think Josh is in the end credits where Todd is in the courtroom and can be seen looking very nervous in the background.
I felt like the finale was honest+trailering itself
Great comparison to the end of Blazing Saddles. Exactly.
Uneven is the perfect description of this season. I'm hoping it find is legs by next season, bc it does have potential.
If it gets a second season they need better writers
Love your reviews, always very insightful and respectful.
OMG I used to love that Bill Bixby Hulk TV show too! That piano theme breaks my heart every time!
Andor shrunk from 5 seasons to 2, and while I’m sure it can be further condensed, I’m loving the build up.
You’re the man, Dan! Keep up the great hard work!
This review sums up exactly how I feel about the show.
I enjoy your work, thanks for adding to the season.
I really liked She-Hulk, it was FUN with work, political, economic and upcoming election stress it was a relief to just have fun watching a show.
Enjoy and be well.
Well said Dan, always enjoy a review with a point
Marvel has truly lost its way
It was refreshing that the main character agreed with me that all those story lines made no sense at all 😂😅
Ikr..I actually was invested in jen's personal story and wanted her to overcome her obstacles...that part couldve been done better
Great video. I agree with your thoughts.
I really like you Dan. I always have. Good for you
I’m just waiting for you to talk about the incredible show Andor more. We’re at the halfway point. Lots of incredible stuff there. Fantastic writing.
Indeed. The best thing that Disney has done with Star Wars so far in my opinion. Brilliant writing and production.
well said, well done!
Josh got the end credits art treatment. He's sweting behind Jen at the trial.
The ending is just an "adaptation" or an "homage" if you want to the Portal game.
I'm glad you had more constructive criticism rather than a toxic, hateful rant like some other channels released.
Great video Dan very fair criticism
This is one of the most balanced reviews I've seen so far. I wasn't a big fan of the show either and with the backlash of "If you don't like the show, you're a misogynist" made me want to find the opinions of others. Most other reviewers are far more diametrically opposed, either calling the show garbage and man hating or the best show to grace the platform. You critque it for what it is, and it's appreciated and refreshing🙂
Where is this backlash? I haven't seen a single comment pushing the notion that people who don't like it are misogynistic. I'm all over Facebook and RUclips and the comments I see are "I know people hate it but I like it" "I like some of it but it's not the best overall" and "THIS SHOW HATES MEN AND ISNT EVEN COMEDY AND SHE HULK IS THE WORST THING EVER"
I feel like I'm in the twilight zone with people pushing this narrative that everyone is called misogynistic for not liking it.
It was the kind of zany rule-breaking that only comics could get away with back in the day
Love the Rodger Ebert pull from his Pearl Harbor review
I think Josh is seen in the courtroom during the trial of the Intelligencia guru - they put it in the credits sequence
Please talk about Andor and it’s latest episode! It was awesome!!
im actually a bit sad it got over. its like light tv that sort of works for me, ended in a weird way, but i did enjoy the ride. its probably better than the all too serious shows that barely go anywhere (i did like wandavision though).
Love the channel, Dan. Great work.
Great review!
100% agree with everything you said.
I concur with everything stated here. I feel like they need to change the writers and direction for sure.
I like the first two eps, and the last two lol. I don't mind the others though, just kinda mid.
This finale is essentially on par with the 90s Spider-Man cartoon where in the last episode he meets Stan Lee in the real world
Continue with your reviews on House of the Dragon Episodes pleaseeeeeee.
As a huge MCU fan I really enjoyed the change of pace this show was. It was just a silly fun good time.
going "meta" is a tight rope.
Wow
I've watched a lot of reviews on She-Hulk and Dan's take is the one that matches mine the most. It's surprising how different all the reviews are. Would it be fair to call this show the most divisive out of all the Disney+ shows?
Dan, fantastic review. We’re very much on the same wavelength about the show (though, I believe I may have had a little more fun than you did). I think this show could have used that 18 episode order that Daredevil got so that the show could have room to possibly feel a bit more even.
18 episodes of this? You have got to be kidding me…
@@jackjohn4156 I’m not. That’s why I said “I think.” But, it also seems like you don’t understand the context of my comment
@@AnferneeMyers That maybe they will expand it better but that makes it seem that they do understand this character or tone but they don’t in any way.
@@jackjohn4156 what makes you think that they don’t? I find the characterizations to be well done.
@@AnferneeMyers So them making She hulk into a whinny character and disrespectful and doing the same bad things that happened to her and not even trying to actually adapt her character right from comics is good characterisation…. Yeah i actually hope you are joking
You’re a fair reviewer and I respect your opinion a lot and I do fully agree more that all of us as fans are on this rock together
This show just wasn’t it from start to finish for me, the writing just bad and got worse and worse and worse, She-Hulk being a lawyer comedy show to me failed.
I love the characters they introduced, but like you said, there wasn't much to do with them. I need more focus
(Although I loved how K.E.V.I.N.'s lens had a sun shield that looked like a baseball cap.)
Overall, it was enjoyable but not good enough.
