The other superheroes serve very intentional purpose. 1) They are good way to populate this world as one with established superheroes. They are side characters, very little time will be dedicated to flesh them out. They will have personality, but Gunn isn't going to get lost in the weeds of giving origins for them the way Josstice League did. 2) Thematically, they will work as foils for what Superman represents. The tone of the trailer is very much one of hope, and it feels uplifting. In a world with a myriad of superheroes, what is it about Superman in particular that makes him stand above the others, the hero children call out to in times of turmoil. Gunn is going to explore the pillar of hope that is Superman, by showing other heroes who might have more cynical world views that Superman will change.
The trailer nailed the hopeful and optimistic tone of Superman. Things like haircut or suit complaints are minor to that. I’m also concerned that it may be overstuffed but the teaser did its job. Best trailer for a 2025 superhero movie that we’ve seen so far.
Krypto reveal got an actual shout out of me. I can’t wait for it. I loved Man of Steel but I’m more than ready for a new take on Superman, and this looks like it’s going to be great!
I watched the trailer before watching this and wanted to get other people's opinions Loads of reviews popped up. But your opinion is the only one I wanted because you're the only person who is honest and not afraid to pick out the negatives as well as the positives. Keep up the good work, Dan 👍
I really appreciate your take on the trailer and the movie. Very measured and unbiased. I have a lot of faith in James Gunn considering he knows how to juggle a lot of characters.
Man I'm GIDDY for this one. I'm so up for a wholesome Superman for a change. I haven't been interested (let alone excited) for a superhero movie since Logan, but this has me super excited.
Honestly, it's the only movie that gives me hope that movies can bring magic back to the cinema. I think the world is ready for hope again. This could be the right movie at the right time.
I’ve seen enough of what Gunn does and I’m certain that every piece will fit into place. He earned enough goodwill for us to be able to trust this man. The extra heroes in this are just to probably feel out the universe and to enhance this particular story…I truly don’t believe Gunn is jumping the gun (no pun intended) in trying to rush world-building or anything like that.
Most people don't know about krypto so a dog is not typically associated with Superman. I'd guess the vast majority of viewers (like myself) do not read the comics and have never read any or most comic books.
@@PseudoNym100 No one knew about Groot or Rocket either but Gunn made them work I'll grant you that people don't often associate a dog with Superman and it's one thing to be introduced to whacky stuff in a whole new thing rather than something whacky in a thing you are familiar with But also... it's just a dog with superpowers, he doesn't speak, he acts like a dog. Krypto is like if you give a golden retriever super strength, heat vision, flight and invulnerability. It's just whatever a dog does times 10. He plays fetch but can go a lot further, he chases animals. he doesn't like mailmen. It's just a dog in a cape, don't know what there is to be concered about
Not that I don’t wanna see Krypto I just found the snow scene with him class MCUish of ruining tension with “comedy” rather than letting us experience that and properly separating them. Other than that this seems like a very competent movie I look forward to esp Holt.
I've been binge watching Smallville (so nostalgic for me). So I am naturally just comparing the trailer to how that show did it. Especially the show of him saving the kid. Smallville had that exact shot.
Excellent perspectives, Dan! I totally agree. It looks to be an excellent take on the Superman character himself. And I'm confident there will be some amazing action sequences with Superman. But the story could be overstuffed with all the side characters. Even if those stories are told well, I still want a movie that focuses on Clark/Superman for 70% of the time. Whether we get something like that remains to be seen.
2:04: I would be happy with this. Lois Lane is an All-Star Investigative Journalist, but in past incarnations, she couldn't figure out that Clark Kent and Superman are the same person, even though they look exactly the same and are never in the same place at the same time. Zack Snyder efficiently got around this by just having his secret exposed to her the very first time they met, but if this time she is aware or at least suspicious, it both takes care of the logic problem but also doesn't insult her intelligence.
I'm still bummed that Henry Cavill is not playing Superman and this trailer seems to show the vision Cavill and Christopher McQuarrie wanted to take with Superman. However, this does look solid from Gunn and I'm very certain he'll deliver a quality movie. Good luck Gunn.
My biggest fear even before this trailer was hearing more and more characters that were being added, just reading the lineup it's like a later Avengers movie.
It's called EN MEDIA RES when an event occurs in the plot, then a good portion of the remaining plot is the lead-up to that event. Great storytelling hook!
Sooo I notice the shot of Clark on the street... that he is bumbling around go out of his way to not so much as bump into one of those fragile little humans.
I loved the shot in the teaser of Superman saving that girl. Reminded me of the great shot of Clark saving the kid from the exploding truck they used for most of the Smallville theme songs. I also worry there might be too many elements, but hopefully the actual trailer will show some kind of story threading it together.
I love the tone of the trailer and the John Williams theme returning is wonderful. Superman needs to feel wholesome and hopeful. No modern jokes undercutting the heart and drama. Play it straight and give us a hero that matters.
Rachel Brosnahan was always my fan cast for Lois Lane, even her Mrs Maisel from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel series looked exactly like Lois from the Golden Age of 30s and 40s. I can't believe it's actually happening, she looks so perfect for the role. I can already feel her chemistry with David Corenswet
4:25 This is a very small thing to get fixated on but the expression on Lex Luthor’s face in that shot where he’s holding the gun is so peculiar… it’s like “wait, what?”. It’s a bit of a weird expression to put out of context. I’ve seen this trailer like ten times already and for some strange reason it’s the question I most want answered. 😂
The way I view the concern with the shared universe stuff is that Guy Gardner, Mr Terrific, Hawgirl, and Metamorpho are just Superman's work colleagues similar to how Lois, Jimmy, Perry, Lombard, Kat, and Ron are Clark's work colleagues. Gunn's great at juggling characters anyway.
Honestly, the trailer was giving me superman ‘78, man of steel & superman returns. I feel there was homage to all them here. I feel like there might be too many characters but it’s a small worry and if anyone can handle multiple characters it’s Gunn so I’m super excited and can’t wait! 😊
I giggle every time I see that clip of Krypto running at some incredible speed kicking up a cloud of snow. It's just so on point with what a super-powered dog would be like. But yeah those cylinders are high pressure gas cylinders - they're all pretty heavy and if the valve breaks off they turn into torpedoes that will go through concrete walls. So definitely a Superman moment.
I agree with everything you said. The “Superman” of the trailer was great. But everything else I have questions about. My fear is that they will just drop us in this world and not establish characters enough.
So many characters, cameos? Red flag. But I'm eager to see the film. Superman is the GOAT and deserving of the most excellent depiction. But is Gunn the one for the job? We'll see.
James Gunn’s specialty is pretty much being able to balance an ensemble cast and make them well liked. He also said that the movie will primarily focus on Lois and Clark so I’m not worried.
This right here... not sure why everyone is so worried about this being an esemble movie. Listen to what Gunn has said, and look at his past works... this movie is going to rock. It's a Superman movie first and foremost.
I have seen a lot of criticism of the opening shot of Superman being beaten and bloody, but this is superhero 101 and part of the hero's journey. They have to get beaten to rise back up. Think about Tom Holland being crushed by the building in Homecoming and him wanting to give up, but having the strength to not give up. That was powerful stuff! Seeing Superman beaten like this immediately makes you empathize with the character. James Gunn knows how to pull at heartstrings and keeps the emotional core there. I think this is a great example and also the loyal dog is such a classic concept. I also think that first look with Cornsweat looking at the camera is mesmerizing and made me feel empathy for the character. I'm looking forward to seeing it in theaters.
I need to see Superman smiling and loving being Superman. This trailer failed to show that, and if this trailer is representative of the film, it’s more of the same of Henry Cavill‘s miserable hero, unfortunately. Overall, I thought this trailer was very meh, and didn’t get me excited at all. This is Superman FFS.
I’ve been a fan of Nicholas Hoult since my wife and I first saw his work on that BBC show “Skins”. He has grown so much since playing Tony on that awesome show. I just can’t wait to see this flick.
Superman is actually fighting Ultraman in the baseball field. He was in one of those leaked images showing Superman handcuffed, and Ultraman was walking behind him. Luckily, James Gunn knows how to juggle multiple characters in comic book films. His record is perfect.
I really enjoyed the trailer as well, and I think your concern about having too many characters is a reasonable one. James Gunn does a pretty good job of balancing a lot of characters though. We see that in Guardians and The Suicide Squad. Hoping for the best!
As far as comics-based movies go, James Gunn has shown that one of his many talents is his knack for writing character, developing an ensemble, and making you care about just about everyone that appears on screen. Between Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and Guardians, I didnt know any of those characaters before Gunn presented them in his way. There were a lot of characters in this trailer that I really don't know either, but I'm not worried that he has lost his talent. It will be a great movie, heartwarming, some laughs, and some tears. Let him cook.
It was a good trailer. My only fear is it feels like there’s a lot of characters and I hope they don’t cram too much in. I really want this film to be great and succeed.
Exactly. People over hyping this. They added characters because they knew it wasn’t going to be strong. But I also agree to not drop one character each movie. This is sort of a copy of marvel. Have all future characters in the first couple movies to set the universe.
Yeah this is also worrying me. But then again, James Gunn has been able to balance multiple characters in his movies before, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt there

I thought it was beautiful. It had me emotional 2 different times. When Clark hugs his dad and when the kid is holding up the flag pole.
Right?! The swell of the music got me tearing up involuntarily. I’m not even a big Superman fan, but this has me hyped and hopeful
I liked it when the dog arrived
Have you seen the 28 years later trailer? If there is any trailer worthy of a reaction video, this is the one
The trailer nailed the hopeful and optimistic tone of Superman. Things like haircut or suit complaints are minor to that. I’m also concerned that it may be overstuffed but the teaser did its job. Best trailer for a 2025 superhero movie that we’ve seen so far.
I just love the immediate juxtaposition with Snyder's Superman...
"Tell me, do you bleed?"
Why yes sir, yes he does
I love the story that the other characters seem to be serving, a reverse kingdom come type story.
Krypto reveal got an actual shout out of me. I can’t wait for it. I loved Man of Steel but I’m more than ready for a new take on Superman, and this looks like it’s going to be great!
Some might call it an old take😅. Either way I've always had a bias for Superman so I'm excited for this!
I watched the trailer before watching this and wanted to get other people's opinions
Loads of reviews popped up. But your opinion is the only one I wanted because you're the only person who is honest and not afraid to pick out the negatives as well as the positives.
Keep up the good work, Dan 👍
His and Chris Stuckmans
I really appreciate your take on the trailer and the movie. Very measured and unbiased. I have a lot of faith in James Gunn considering he knows how to juggle a lot of characters.
Man I'm GIDDY for this one. I'm so up for a wholesome Superman for a change. I haven't been interested (let alone excited) for a superhero movie since Logan, but this has me super excited.
Honestly, it's the only movie that gives me hope that movies can bring magic back to the cinema.
I think the world is ready for hope again. This could be the right movie at the right time.
The fight in the baseball stadium looks like it’s between Superman and Ultraman
It reminds me of season 3 when the other JL members start appearing in the superman animated series in the 90s.
Am I the only one who sees like a giant paw/hand print where Superman is laying at the begining?
I’ve seen enough of what Gunn does and I’m certain that every piece will fit into place. He earned enough goodwill for us to be able to trust this man. The extra heroes in this are just to probably feel out the universe and to enhance this particular story…I truly don’t believe Gunn is jumping the gun (no pun intended) in trying to rush world-building or anything like that.
Gunn makes a talking racoon and tree the love of everyone... but my god a dog is somehow putting peiple on edge?
Most people don't know about krypto so a dog is not typically associated with Superman. I'd guess the vast majority of viewers (like myself) do not read the comics and have never read any or most comic books.
@@PseudoNym100 No one knew about Groot or Rocket either but Gunn made them work
I'll grant you that people don't often associate a dog with Superman and it's one thing to be introduced to whacky stuff in a whole new thing rather than something whacky in a thing you are familiar with
But also... it's just a dog with superpowers, he doesn't speak, he acts like a dog.
I definitely felt the same about that scene.
My guess is that all the other Superheroes in this movie will be used to contrast between them and Superman to show what makes Superman special.
That's a justification for all the characters that I could get behind. I hope you're right.
Seeing Superman save people was missed
This is the earliest I’ve been lol. I had a feeling you’d do a reaction 👍🏽
My biggest fear even before this trailer was hearing more and more characters that were being added, just reading the lineup it's like a later Avengers movie.
im confident it will be find with those other characters Gunn has shown time after time again that he excels with group of characters
It's called EN MEDIA RES when an event occurs in the plot, then a good portion of the remaining plot is the lead-up to that event. Great storytelling hook!
Great video Dan!
Awesome shirt, Dan
Sooo I notice the shot of Clark on the street... that he is bumbling around go out of his way to not so much as bump into one of those fragile little humans.
I loved the shot in the teaser of Superman saving that girl. Reminded me of the great shot of Clark saving the kid from the exploding truck they used for most of the Smallville theme songs. I also worry there might be too many elements, but hopefully the actual trailer will show some kind of story threading it together.
It reminded me of The Boys episode 1.
Loaded up a kryptonite bullet for the first time and it weighs different
I like that it is shown with the audio of the kid calling for Superman so it makes me think he’s like “WTF did my gun just speak?”
3:47 Love that Dan and I had the same favorite part of the trailer lol
I’m hyped for this movie!! Corn-sweat looking good
The public backlash against Superman was already done very well in Batman v Superman. “People hate what they don’t understand.”
I have faith with the dog. Gunn proved you can have fun with that, being colorful and alot of characters, from the GOTG films.
Fun fact, my Dad's met Pruitt Taylor Vince. He used to come to a pizzaria in Baton Rouge my Dad worked at.
James Gunn has always been great at ensembles. In fact with Gunn I’d be more worried if he didn’t have an ensemble.
We'll see.
Just Like Guardians of the Galaxy or Gunn's Suicide Squad?
Im just honestly shocked that anyone ever had any doubts. Gunn really doesn’t miss.
Great work Dan!
Please no Ultraman. I don't want to think about Earth 2 or 3 or anything else. Keep it simple.
u rock Dan!
Love how it showed Superman actually saving someone
Just a correction: We heard dialog from both Supes and Krypto!
Your favorite shot is my favorite shot of the trailer. Overall this gives me the right Superman feeling and I am looking forward to this film.
That John Williams score brought me back to when I was a kid watching the Christopher Reeves Superman on VHS
But then again, James Gunn has been able to balance multiple characters in his movies before, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt there
I'm holding out hope it's about Superman. The bane (not Bane) of DC for me has always been trying to tell too much at once.
Kryptonialy possible just tossed out naturally. Dan do not ever change. :)
Loved the vibe of this, I think James Gunn will deliver.
It’s 2024 and we’re still hearing the “there are too many characters” complaints
