    I mean, I don't want to underrate Stephen Hawking's achievements, they are all truly incredible. But, he's not the most brilliant mind of out time, nor he is the greatest physicist alive. He has an important voice in the scientific community, and his outreach to the masses through his books are amazing, but he isn't THE physicist. He's not close to Einstein (no scientist has revolutionized physics in the same manner since him, so no there hasn't been any Einsteins), and there are more successful physicists. Also, he did not come up with "The Theory of Everything". The "Theory of Everything", that is, a theory that unites General Relativity with Quantum Mechanics, does not exist as of yet. Stephen Hawking just believes that it will be found, but he or any other physicist has not solved the problem. So like, he's great, but let's also not super overrate him.

    • @Tylericous
      @Tylericous 9 лет назад

      I find him to be a more important and smarter Nile Degrass Tyson. Both are science celebrities and are loved, both reach out to the masses. Hawkins a lot more obviously.

      @Tylericous 9 лет назад

      I misspelled Neil, sorry

      Quote: "But, he's not the most brilliant mind of out time, nor he is the greatest physicist alive."
      Well, who then?

    • @fenster666
      @fenster666 9 лет назад +2

      Tylericous You know you can edit you comments once there made right?

    • @jackgruber7811
      @jackgruber7811 9 лет назад

      I don't understand why the edit part is important, but thanks for the suggestion. To optiganone, in a sense, it is really difficult to define a greatest physicist alive. To know, someone must revolutionize our way of thinking about the universe (and the theory he/she proposed must be accurate to boot). The last people to do this were Einstein, who introduced General and Special Relativity. General Relativity in particular changed the way we understood gravity, showing that Classical Mechanics is not all there. Likewise, Quantum Mechanics showed us the mysteries of the microscopic universe, which Classical Mechanics (again) cannot understand. However, these two theories, even though great and accurate, are not compatible. Physicists look for a new theory to unite (or replace) both, so that we can understand all phenomena with one single theory. This will be the next. No physicist has done this; however, many physicists work on this now. Stephen Hawking has a voice and has tried to tackle quantum gravity via his research of dark holes (which if we could observe, we could maybe solve the problem, a la Interstellar ;) ), but he will definitely not be the one who breaks through and solves physic's existential problem. Some theories of his have been wrong, and are not profound enough to just solve the problem. Likewise, we don't know if leading physicists, like Edward Witten's, 'patches' to the problem will withstand forever. Right now, we don't know who's the greatest mind, but if you look around, you'll bound to find a couple of candidates who may in this generation, crack the problem and find a theory of everything. One of them is sure to be the next Einstein.

  • @CarloMartinini
    @CarloMartinini 9 лет назад +38

    Jeremy, not sure if people have called you out on this yet, but I just have to (sorry): there is no "center of the universe", as far as we can tell. I haven't seen the movie but I bet you're probably thinking about the theory that states there's a supermassive black hole at the center of every *galaxy*.

    • @Jahooba
      @Jahooba 9 лет назад +2

      Everything has a center. But yeah, he meant galaxy.

    • @stumpthegreat
      @stumpthegreat 9 лет назад

      No, he meant universe. Stephen Hawkin's PhD thesis was the idea that there was a black hole at the center of the universe. He later came out with a disproof of this idea. In fact, he has been quite a few conflicting ideas based on his own theories.

    • @CarloMartinini
      @CarloMartinini 9 лет назад +12

      Jahooba Actually that's not true. The universe has no center.
      Basically, think about it this way: picture the universe as a globe of planet earth (it isn't actually spherical, but for this experiment let's say it is). Could you say New York city is the center of that globe? Could you say Beijing is? London? The Mariana's trench? The answer is either that there is no center on the globe, or that every point is the center.

      Lucas Garibaldi Jeremy usually only ends up reviewing "mainstream" movies simply because those are the movies playing near him. He has said many times that the theaters near him often don't have "non-mainstream" movies. And regarding whether he likes them or not, I seriously doubt that he goes into any type of movies with a preconceived notion of whether he'd like or not based on how mainstream it is.

    I fell in love with cinematography, especially in the shot with Redmayne in the bathtub. I remember when Redmayne first started walking with the crutches, I thought, "Fuck, Eddie! You go get that nom!" And isn't Felicity just so damn angelic? Ugh!

    actually the equation for the theory of everything isn't there yet but the movie is. I was like living in Hawking's shoes- Hawking even said when he watched the movie that at times he thought it was really him on screen like he was reliving moments in his life. It dragged on a bit but there was just so much in it I think it would have suffered if it was truncated. I like that it wasn't sensationalized like some biopics. It didn't pull any punches with talking about how science erases the need for the god hypothesis. I will be thinking about this movie a lot- it makes me want to switch majors to science. Also I like how it's about time the expanding and collapsing of the universe and as soon as it gets to the end it rewinds when he says look "what we made". My favorite movie of 2014 so far.

    This movie could have been better, but no. The writers don't realize the implications of what Stephen Hawking discovered, instead just giving us a cliched biopic romance. How is it that the mind blowing immensity of the universe is never used in any significant way in this movie? Sorry, but this is one of the most overrated movies of the year.

    • @finchtm
      @finchtm 9 лет назад

      Totally agree with you bro, this movie was just really dull and approached it in all the wrong ways. I would have rather seen a movie about his personal struggle trying to have his theory accepted than his romantic life.

    Not necessarily directly related to the specific content in this video, but whats the deal with the term oscar bait? I have heard it a lot and it seems to mean any movie of emotional value that isn't an outright action movie or dumb horror/thriller.

    • @Jogwheel
      @Jogwheel 9 лет назад +7

      Has a great deal to do with the timing of the film's release, as well. It annoys me that Hollywood almost refuses to premiere a biographic story, or period-drama before Halloween: they want to make sure the Academy has it fresh in their mind when they vote in January. Feels underhanded and manipulative to me: like they want to win awards, rather than tell a compelling story.
      That's just my two-cents, anyway :-)

      Jogwheel I totally agree with you. Every movie that has oscar ambitions tends to release from october to december.
      Just check the nominees for best picture from the last oscars:
      12 years a slave - November 8
      American hustle - December 13
      Captain philips - October 11
      Gravity - October 4
      Dallas buyers club - November 1
      Her - December 18
      Nebraska - November 15
      Philomena - November 22
      The wolf of wall street - December 25

    • @TimboVideo
      @TimboVideo 9 лет назад +2

      Oscar bait, when used correctly, typically refers to a movie that comes out in the October-December time of year (Oscar season) that seems to pander to the conventions of Oscar-nominated films (sentimentality, flashy visuals, period pieces, biopics, performance-centered acting showcases, usually dramas, sometimes about or involving war, etc.). But now, the term has been skewed to mean pretty much what you said - any movie that tries to mean something. It sucks.
      Kind of like with the term "binge watching". Now that that's in the vernacular, people use it pretty synonymously with just "watching", when binge watching really refers to watching excessive amounts of something in short periods of time. Now it just means you watched it at all, usually on Netflix. Because apparently no one watches one thing at a time on Netflix. I don't get it. People are stupid.

    I disagree with the hype of this movie. I came into this movie wanting to know more about his science and work-- hence the title, "The Theory of Everything." If I wanted to know about a relationship involving a woman and a man with ALS then they could have made a movie about any other ALS victim, (anyone else who is not the greatest living mind of our time). If you really wanted to know more about his life then you would want the movie to be about how he came to these brilliant thoughts, not just a quick moment of how he stared into the fire and come up with some of the most important ideas, I feel like I spent 60% of the movie watching a love tragedy.

    I'm totally right there with you, Jeremy. I thought that the acting in this movie was really good. I admire how much effort and preparation Eddie Redmayne put into his portrayal of Stephen Hawking so that he could represent ALS and his life accurately and without becoming a parody of the very serious disease. I think that performances like this one deserve Oscars (or, at the very least, nominations) because the actor must become so many emotions and characters all at once. I also liked the cinematography because the movie employed completely different lenses and angles depending on the mood and tone of the scene. Also holy cow, the score was perfect.
