Seeing Francis Fords Coppola's Megalopolis: A Fable (2024) yesterday brought me back to those classic style of the Epics of old. Starting with Osvaldo Golijov score for the film. He looked to Miklós Rózsa's score for Ben-Hur (1959) to establish the films grandeur setting. That being said about the films music score. It was a trippy, but fascinating watch and would love to own on Dvd some day. Francis to me delivered on what he made and i was entertained. Now given the structure of the film and pacing. Yes, a lot people are not gonna like this film very much. Though i gotta give it to him on self financing this awesome Epic. Now, i did look into this films history long before going to see it. Now that's a really good movie! I'm not a big gorehound, so the gross-out stuff isn't my thing. Still, it's an interesting science fiction premise and a well-made movie. People should check out The Substance instead of this self-indulgent vanity project by an old and washed-up director living off of his past greatness.
Fair take. I ask creative people this question: Is it more important to you that your creative work says what you intended, or that other people understand (get) it? Copolla would clearly give the former answer.
The former. If it does what you intend it to do then that's what matters...as long as if you were asked about it you could therefore elaborate and engage about it cohesively. You shouldn't HAVE to explain it for the sake of it. It is a good question though where you could potentially be right in both instances simultaneously.
@@Devypocalypse for an independent movie? Of course. For a blockbuster? No, you have an obligation to make something entertaining for the audience. An incoherent story fails at this for most moviegoers.
For the rest of his life, Coppola will be obsessed with making the film more representative of what he truly wanted to say. Just like he has with The Godfather Part 3.
Big fan of Francis.. Apocalypse Now is one of my favorite movies of all time so I was going to see this regardless. However, I believe there was lots he had to say about this topic that got compressed into 3 hours and it suffered in plot points because of that. I'll give him credit for having the creative eye for world building.
I fully agree, it was a visually stunning fairytail with great actors, but it was trimmed down just way too much. It felt as if Coppola had too much to say, but didn't want to be boring, so he tells his plot points but footage conveying some of these points has been removed. I still want to see it again, but maybe on a streaming platform so I can stop and rewind. Still 8.5/10 from me.
I think you just described a depiction of current times. You can see the forces at first, and then it exponentially speeds up in a chaotic end. It may not be the cinematic standard, but it may be an accurate portrayal of an end of times. I will see this, based on your review.
@@JCDenton95why you here for reviews? Do you need someone else's opinion to match yours so you feel worthy of giving your own option in a movie or something? Your husband must feel great
In early 1982 I drove 40 minute to a theater that was showing "One From The Heart". As I remember, they showed the movie in the 1.37 ratio. I ewed and awed over the then state-of-the-art techniques. When the curtain closed and the lights came up I thought "This movie sucked." So in 2024 I go to my nearby theater and see "Megalopolis". I ewed and awed over the state-of-the-art visuals. When the lights came up I said "It was okay." It wasn't the bomb "One from the Heart" was, but it won't rank up there with "The Godfather" or "Apocalypse Now" either. But am I glad he made it? You're damn right. I hope more famous directors get to make their passion projects. BTW, I still think "Tucker" was one of Coppola's best. I felt like I was one of the very few who bothered to see it in the theater. But keep in mind at the time "Tucker" was released, there was this other movie released at the same time called "The Last Temptation of Christ". Three guesses over which one got more attention. But that seems to be the story of Coppola's life. Shesh.
I love Jeremy’s reviews specially because he is honest and doesn’t want to just go with what is popular to say. However, for this movie I have to disagree I almost didn’t watch the film due to reviews similar to this one. 💯 You know the theatrical cut is shorter due to run time mandates from the studio. Waiting for the director's cut seems to be the best way to appreciate what story he really wanted to tell 👍
Wasn’t the version shown at Cannes the same length as the current theatrical version?? I doubt there’ll be a “director’s cut”, unless FCC is desperate to redeem the film in the public eye, which is actually very possible now that I think of it
??? Coppola basically financed this himself. He had complete control, there was no studio interference. There was no mandate. He could do whatever he wanted with the run time. This is the directors cut
At the end of the day, it is art. It occupies that space where you can look at it from many different angles, and it may not be the best for entertainment, but it has value. Not everyone will appreciate that, but for me it sure beats something like Babylon which is literally unwatchable. I mean I gave it a good shot, maybe an hour of my time and I was done. Megalopolis got a bit slow at times, but I sat until the credits rolled and I felt like it was time well spent.

Favorite movie that went from flop to classic is John Carpenter's The Thing. I was just thinking about that film today! How is this Gen Z introduction? He's made many of the most iconic works ever. If you're into film and Gen Z you have almost certainly seem one of his films (from the 70s) And if you've never heard of coppla before, megalopolis won't be the first movie seen of his

I refuse to watch any of Coppola's movies after I learned that he defended Victor Salva ( a convicted pedo ) after he abused a little boy on the set of the Clown House movie.
Really? And I thought that I noticed some p3d0 symbols they use to signal to each other that were released by the FBI (look it up if you haven't seen it). Shit...
I didn't know about this... Fuck, man.... And in Megalopolis I swear I spotted their symbols (anyone who knows about this knows what I'm talking about. If not, google Ef Bee Eye Pee Dough symbols. I have to type that in code or the comment gets deleted).

People should check out The Substance instead of this self-indulgent vanity project by an old and washed-up director living off of his past greatness.
Megaflopolis 😂😂
like Grace said XD
You guys are bunch assholes
Good one JJ.
I was actually thinking of seeing this movie at the theater before this review. Now it's destined to be torrented.
My mind thought of this before I even watched the review 😂
Keanu Reeves Constantine and Thomas Jane’s Punisher are movies people are coming around on that were initially passed over and panned
As a fan of those comic book characters, those two movie adaptations are really BAD.
Hell no Thomas Jane Punisher sucks Jon Bernthal all the way
I tried to enjoy The Punisher, but it suffered in parts of the dialogue.
Ray Stevenson was best Punisher
I find Constantine unwatchable. I've tried twice.
LMAO 😂😂😂😂😂 You had me there for a second...."That's it, that's the review" then punch!🤣🤣🤣🤣
The Havik reference is a surprise for sure, but a welcome one.
In the words of the Joker, "And here we go"...
I can only read that in Mario’s voice
Now yuo see
Fair take.
I ask creative people this question: Is it more important to you that your creative work says what you intended, or that other people understand (get) it? Copolla would clearly give the former answer.
It sounds like the message doesn’t matter if the story isn’t coherent and well paced.
So it insists upon itself?
He will also ask extras to sit on his lap and give him a kiss
For the rest of his life, Coppola will be obsessed with making the film more representative of what he truly wanted to say. Just like he has with The Godfather Part 3.
Big fan of Francis.. Apocalypse Now is one of my favorite movies of all time so I was going to see this regardless. However, I believe there was lots he had to say about this topic that got compressed into 3 hours and it suffered in plot points because of that. I'll give him credit for having the creative eye for world building.

@@KabbalahSherryI heard it's awesome.
There's room for ALL kinds of movies. Hope you see Mega but without the kids. lol
Madame Web or The Crow still better
I was gonna see this last night but after reading reviews, I took a nap instead. I think I made the right decision
It’s definitely unlike anything you’ll ever see so it’s worth a watch for that reason alone 😂 I found it hella goofy

I love that film.

Love whenever I get a notification that Jeremy uploaded ❤️
I am glad I did, I thought its message is important and its question has to be analyzed and debated by everyone. We all share this world, and some of us this country so we need to think more about the future
Great review Jeremy. I saw you have been taking some heat from your review of "Am I Racist?" and its absolutly mind numbing how some people are so close minded and are afraid of ANYTHING outside of their Safe Space Fuzzy Bubble. My favorite movies that were panned when they came out; John Carpenter's The Thing, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Big Trouble in Little China, Road House, Caddyshack
Megalopolis should have worked as a Netflix series, heck they could have implemented the live action interview scene with YOU as the viewer interactic with your tv control.
Favorite Coppola: The Godfather
Favorite Flop: Shawshank Redemption
*I also love the original Blade Runner, but I would watch Shawshank over it any day! And I will fully acknowledge that Godfather Pt. 2 is almost as great as the original. I love Apocalypse Now as well, but the original Godfather remains the best!

Megalopolis was one i picked out as "theater movie!" cuz it looked grand. But then the reviews came out, and now its a "when it comes out on streaming" and spend that money on Gladiator 2 instead.🍿
Its like the entire story happens in the second half but the cool things happen in the first, wich makes me feel a fan edit will easily clean the movie up quite a bit, even if some stuff doesnt work even reedited

I was really looking forward to seeing this... THANKS, JEREMY!
whatsinmy AI fixes this. Megalopolis: Allegory or Nonsense?
It sounds like this is a movie to wait for the four-hour directors cut to watch.
💯
You know the theatrical cut is shorter due to run time mandates from the studio. Waiting for the director's cut seems to be the best way to appreciate what story he really wanted to tell 👍
@@AceFotinos I've never seen a directors cut. Maybe I will wait on this one.
@@Frijolero18How was it received then?
At the end of the day, it is art. It occupies that space where you can look at it from many different angles, and it may not be the best for entertainment, but it has value. Not everyone will appreciate that, but for me it sure beats something like Babylon which is literally unwatchable. I mean I gave it a good shot, maybe an hour of my time and I was done. Megalopolis got a bit slow at times, but I sat until the credits rolled and I felt like it was time well spent.
“Alright , let’s do this?!” 😂your expression killed me
I guess wait for the extended director's cut.

The opening premise sounds like Atlas Shrugged.

Which is a fantastic book, btw
Which is ALSO trash. At least they have that in common.
I was thinking more The Fountainhead.
I tried reading Atlas Shrugged. It was too annoying. My politics are not too different from what Rand was pushing, so that was not what turned me off. Nor was it the length (I have read Jerusalem all the way through). Rather, the characters were just not worth following. Boring and soundalike.
@@TeddyRumble it's NOT a fantastic book lol
Favorite movie that went from flop to classic is John Carpenter's The Thing. I was just thinking about that film today! It was so suspenseful and the practical creature effects are still jaw-dropping in how believable and creepy they are. Favorite Coppola film is still first Godfather. The dialogue, acting, cinematography, music, everything seemed to be firing in all cylinders with that one.
I'm waiting for this one to come on a streaming service I already subscribe to. As for my favorite Coppola film, I love The Outsiders.

Sad that this would be Gen Z's introduction to one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
Now, how would I convince my younger siblings that Coppola is indeed, The Godfather of filmmaking?
How is this Gen Z introduction? He's made many of the most iconic works ever. If you're into film and Gen Z you have almost certainly seem one of his films (from the 70s)

Victor Ronald Salva is an American film director, screenwriter, and convicted sex offender (pedo). The self-described protégé of Francis Ford Coppola who defended him publicly after his conviction. Everyone can make there own choices but I won't be recommending him anymore.
