Love, love Rising Sun. Our last game, I was dragging little behind and was ignored by the other players, on the last mandate I played Harvest while controlling Kyoto and Kansai, the 7 victory points from the harvest put me in the lead. The face of my enemies was priceless. Still ended up losing by 1 point to Pedro but felt fantastic. In my Top 5, certainly my best looking game, the artwork is out of this world.
Just goes to show how subjective a game experience really is. I absolutely hate this game and the artwork is a major reason for that. Everything is just so busy that it overloads my senses.
@@cakepop9055 thats kind of the beauty of the hobby though. We get to equally love the same hobby and love games that other people can't stand, while appreciating everything in between. I have friends that just sold rising sun and learned to despise it after deciding the turtle clan was overpowered, while I finally got my hands on the ks playmat and promo season cards and couldn't be happier to finally everything for the game.
Love the video, but Rising Sun is a big YES for me. Maybe I love the bling and beauty so much I overlook some minor quibbles. I love the variety of choices in buying the cards; you still choose where to move and where to add forces if not when you do each of them. I can’t wait to play again.
@@BoardGameBollocks I think you're right, Cyclades, and Blood Rage are better games. But RIsing Sun is only slightly behind them and it is just different enough to own all three.
Love your review. ( cthulhu garden gnome lol) I'm still thinking about buying it. I grew up on samurai swords board game. I just need my samurai fix. Cheers
I know I'm 2 years late here, but noticed you suggested Blood rage was better in this vid. But in the Blood rage vid, you suggested this was preferable? Did your impressions evolve betw. reviews? Love the no nonsense style btw, esp. the STFU line in the Clank vid. So good!
Sounds like you should stick with Blood Rage. I've seen the battle betting mechanics fail the usual, 'guys on a map' fans. It's on the player to assure they have an ally after the tea party. If you don't pick up on that after the 1st round, you're daft. This is a favorite of mine, but I understand why others do not care for it. Cheers
@@BoardGameBollocks you gotta sweeten the deal with a bribe or a nice jab about someone being in the lead. Alas, you are totally FUBAR if the table is against you. Better take the areas with vp and pray for a harvest mandate.
My group really liked it but yeah it isn't well balanced. I have to say though, I have played it dozens of times so I think I got my money's worth out of it. If you like painting minis or you use minis for Rpgs or skirmish games, this gives you a great collection as well.
Rising sun does come with a few faults and the daimyo expansions is overpriced however is a heap of fun with the right people. It is a very good game and very fluent and creative tactically. Will prolly purchase invasion expansions
Great review. Was thinking of picking this up but looks like style over substance. Bought Cyclades on your recommendation and that is superb. Thanks. Keep the reviews coming!
Mate ! Finally someone that isn't blinded by the bling this game brings ! It's an ok game, but so many more a better. My group loved this game, but I was always on the fence because of the exact same cons you bring up. I also rather played Cyclades or whatever then be left out of the twat tea party with their bloody fancy dandy miniatures. Those nannies can dip em in their little tea and shove em up their *** Another great review mate ! Love the channel ! Keep the bollocks coming !
Lucky you didn't order ankh I heard not that good. I was wondering if you every heard of a game called black rose. Its Magic Gathering crossover with Adrenaline....
Very fair review. You forgot to mention it's an absolute b!@ch to setup and put away though! :D Best player count is 3 IMO - it removes some of the frustrations you have - less board clog, each player gets exactly 2 turns each round so no issues with tiles and you do more on your turn / have more control. Play time is so much better too. I've played with 5 once and never will again. I put a six-sided die on the base of each monster to show their strength so it's easily visible to everyone for calculating force in each province. Makes a huge difference.
My wallet is delighted that I am immune to the charms of this game. Yes it looks good but I have to consider that I feel compelled to paint all miniatures in a minis-focused game and the queue already stretches to the far future. From your description it seems that most of the big miniatures here are included as shiny enticement rather than the logical functional choice. But more important I can’t see me getting it to the table with my group so I will scratch it from the wish list. . For once you have saved me money.
It's a beautiful game, but a flawed one. I ended up selling my KS version and just buying the retail version, second hand, with the wooden insert storage. I have never really felt that I missed out on much by off loading the KS version and the storage solution is useful with this game as the minis look like potential candidates for damage if handled without care.
I agree the game is highly unbalanced. But thing is, the first player doesn't choose a mandate out of all the tiles. You pick the first 3 tiles, pick one and put the other 2 back on top. The next player also picks the top 3 tiles, the 2 the other player put back and one new one. So when you're last the tile that you want might stil be there. I saw the mistake made on stream as well.
If you’re last you have less chance of getting the tile you want, no? We house rule out the top 3 tiles with higher player counts as the randomness is unfair on the last player.
@@BoardGameBollocks sure, it's more random. But I would like to play a Marshall tile as soon as possible. The more strongholds the more units on the board. With you're house rule those two tiles will be gone when it's you're turn. Especially in the beginning of the game. When you playing with normal rule, there is still chance you might get the tile you want. Because there more tiles, than actual action spaces. Only 7 and 10 tiles. So it's random for sure, but more fair to all players. In my opinion.
Good chance they’ll be gone without the house rule. At least with our mod you’re guaranteed to get it at least once if you need it. Without it you may not get it at all.
A terrible game for 5 players, especially if it's two couples and a spare wheel. Very poorly balanced, the 5th player basically acts as easy pickings for the other 4 players (who are more inclined to pair up in the early stages due to relationship loyalties) It's a pretty game, but the alliance system is its fatal flaw.

Great job dividing the video, very helpful! The 8:03 mini sword fight was hilarious! Keep it up

I must’ve changed my mind.
Me and my friend just had the same experience. wENT STRAIGHT TO SHNEDFYUGBSAWUIFYGSAIUKGF
Understated and funny.
I couldn't get over the turn order/count issues with rising sun.
Which game would you consider your favorite in this particular genre?
Cyclades for sure
The Godfather game was very similar, plays much faster and you can find for under 20$ and maybe under 10$ in the US

If players don’t want you in their tea party then there’s nowhere to go. My group regularly hangs up on me so I’m screwed.
