There’s a glitch in Sonic 3 during the opening cutscene that can basically skip the cutscene. P1 (Sonic) can’t be controlled during the cutscene, but P2 (Tails) can with a second controller. Tails can then airlift Sonic during the cutscene to make Sonic controllable, and then the player can start the Act a little earlier. That’s basically what happened with the Mario Clone here, Mario wasn’t controllable, but the Clone was.
Maybe not a hack but maybe used for testing? Maybe they were planning on having 2 players in story mode instead of just vs. Similar to how Nsmb2 had it?

Reason why he burns in lava weird 1. He stays still in his spot during the cutscene of bowser falling 2. Since he can't break the laws of physics, he's supposed to fall like normal 3. Just before mario spins and put his fist in the air, he moves to the ordered spot, but since he fell in reason 2, he moves from one part to another.
