Have they figured out yet, YOU CANT LEGISLATE THE EXISTENCE OF A MARKET. Not even with huge threats and propaganda over environmental catastrophes that don't happen and quietly get revised when the deadline passes...
The future is EV, but this is not the future, we're years, decades away from the storage and use of energy capable of functional transport all year around vehicle use. Batteries just aren't there yet, and brighter is the generation or infrastructure.
It's a nice novelty for those that can afford second cars and an ICE one at that. But most people can't afford to buy one and the deal with the issues of range and changing...
What happened to the hybrid? It's probably the nearest we are going to get to an efficient serviceable practical car until the energy storage or live generation capabilities are created...

EVs and hydrogen without infrastructure are junk.
Hybrids are the best short term answer until batteries and infrastructure catch up.The Steam engine went extinct in the 40s and diesel electric locomotives have been their replacement since them. Diesel electric IS a hybrid !!! Today, Edison Motors has a succesful hybrid logging truck that beats the Tesla in both power and fuel economy and most importantly, and it is lighter than the standard trans truck NRA. No range anxiety.

They want less NOX and CO2 in urban areas? Fine. It's quite easy to make a hybrid which can do at least 50 miles as a pure EV. And the good thing is in a traffic jam they don't use very much battery power. So the range doesn't reduce much. But when you need to do serious miles and don't want the charging hassle, they can do that too.

Elon Musk/Tesla are experts at making 4 wheel robots…
The legacy car makers gave Tesla a 15 year head start and will not be able to make a competitive 4 wheel robot for years. By the time they can make a 4 wheel robot to compete with the Model S, that was introduced in the market 12 years ago, Tesla will be making significantly improved 4 wheel robots with Full Self Driving software included.

Ford, GM, Hyundai, I'm ready! Gimme a call when you solve the recharge time problem, the public charging problem, the weight problem, the battery replacement problem, the reliability problem, the Lithium supply problem, the temperature problem, the price problem...
I'm out here, waiting. Sorry for your sales dip. You rolled this stuff out WAY too soon, to the point where EVs are going to have yet another problem - the Public Perception problem. Even if the manufacturers somehow solve all those other problems, there's now going to a significant segment of the public who are going to remember all this, and will never buy an EV, ever.
And no, Solid State batteries are not going to solve most of those problems...

There is no "lithium supply problem". There is an excess supply of lithium and the price has plummeted 60% in a year! China is coming out with a charging system that will give 10% charge a minute! Soon gas stations will start turning into charging stations but there are still millions of ICE cars on the road that must be supported. Battery replacement costs will come down dramatically in time. The price problem is already disappearing with many Chinese EV's going for under $20k. China is the remedy for the high prices we see now. Unfortunately Trump and Biden both think we have to prop up the American car companies so they both want a 100% tariff on Chinese cars which will double their price. Which sucks!
As far as the public perception problem, yes, that is a real problem but it can be easily overcome just like the automobile overcame the horse and buggy. There will be a tipping point where the public's reluctance will be overcome and everyone will want to buy an EV. A better product sooner or later always pushes out a worse existing product.

    I studied business and economics.
    1) The Customer is the price maker.
    2) The business is the price taker.
    3) If you don't make a product that Customers want. You will not sell the product that you are manufacturing.
    4) If the government dictates the economy. That is a command economy and is no longer a free market. And command economies never succeed.
    Example:
Please research command economies. All communist countries are command economies. China, the former Soviet Union, etc.
The ruler tells everyone what they will be required to do. Comrade: you will make tractors. But I am a doctor. Silence you will make tractors. But no one needs a tractor. Silence; you go to gulag for reeducation.
Kind of like that. 😂 LoL.
Or in this case apparently it's. Silence underling, You will manufacture $95,000. EV's. But most of the country is earning minimum wage. Silence you make them purchase the EV. But how do they pay the $1,100. Per month payment. Silence underling.
