The easiest and cheapest way to update your kitchen cabinets. The process is simple but it takes some time to do since you have to let each coat dry a day before applying a second coat.

Java gel stain: amzn.to/2K3vIeB
Minwax satin polyurethane: amzn.to/2LCnXfU
Between Coats Finishing Pads: amzn.to/2SoETYS
Purdy XL brushes: amzn.to/32zNqgp
Trisodium Phosphate All-Purpose Cleaner: amzn.to/2O976mq
Items you will need:
TSP Trisodium Phosphate for cleaning the cabinets.
3m stripping pads (medium coarseness)
Purdy XL nylon/Polyester brush, I used a 2.0 to 2.5-inch brush.
Painters pyramids are helpful in holding up the doors off the table while staining.
Gel stain, I bought two 1 quart cans and used 1-1/2 quart.
Synthetic steel wool #000 for "lightly" scuffing in between coats.
Minwax fast-drying Polyurethane Satin finish about 2 quarts.
Painters towels or a good lint-free rag for applying the polyurethane.
Mineral spirits for cleaning the brushes and anything else you did not intend to stain.
Direction on how I did it.
1: Clean cabinets with TSP as I explained in the video.
2: use a medium stripping pad to scuff up the cabinets and then clean the dust off.
3: apply gel stain with the Purdy XL brush, at least two coats.
4: Lightly scuff between gel stain coats and before poly coat with synthetic #000 steel wool, careful not to scuff gel stain off especially on edges, then clean any dust off. Let gel stain dry 24hrs between coats.
5: Apply Minwax fast-drying "satin finish" poly with a lint-free rag or towel at least two coats.
6: Lightly scuff in between poly coats except for last coat of course. Let poly dry at least 4 hours before scuffing with synthetic steel wool.
If you do get a few air bubbles in the poly when you're applying it, just blow quick bursts of air on the bubbles and they'll go away. - Хобби
Excellent job Pete. I have watched so many videos about gel staining. You showed everything from start to finish in 14 minutes and to the point. I am going to start my kitchen cabinets this weekend. Thanks again.
IRAD NAHBA how did you cabinets come out?
Really good step by step clarity in your verbal and visual instructions. I feel very confident that the work I'll be doing will turn out fine.
Pete, we finished the cabinets and I am putting on stainless handles which really add as well. We did have some minor problems with brush marks but nothing to write home about. Overall really pleased with the end result, and we can thank you and your excellent video!
FANTASTIC!!!! Best video on the net about how to go this. Better than the manufacturers video!!! Way to go, you convinced me to try it now!
Thank you, you should have no problems and also read the description for more info.
THANK YOU PETE ! Before I saw your video I had already applied and WIPED OFF ( like you do with real stain ) 2 coats of this java on my oak cabinets. The color only changed slightly from the original oak & with the second coat after wiping the excess off there was almost no change at all. After watching you essentially 'PAINT" the stain on I went back and applied my third coat - using a paint brush & NO WIPING EXCESS this time & the difference is amazing! For everyone attempting this project - Pete is 100% correct that the way to go is to apply the gel "stain" EXACTLY the same way you would apply paint. ( and agree with the Purdy - the foam paint brushes don't get into the cabinet door cracks and leave behind too much excess ) thanks again ... wish I had seen this 2 coats ago : )
I'm glad this video helped, That's the whole reason I made this video. Just make sure you put at least two coats of a quick drying polyurethane to protect the stain when you're done.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. This gel stain takes a day to dry so it can be a bit time consuming. I did one side with one coat first then let it dry to the next day and did the other side the next day, repeat until you have two coats. I also used painters pyramids to hold the doors off the table surface so I could stain the edges of the door easier. I also used pieces of folded up paper towel on the tips of the painters pyramids as not to scratch the stained surface.
it looks amazing, so updated and a great save without big cash investment!
Great Video! Cabinets turned out beautiful. I am going to do my cabinets like this!
Glad you liked it, Thanks
Glad you liked the video. Yes I used a satin polyurethane, gloss is just to shinny and does not look good, at least on kitchen cabinets. The cabinets are holding up very well, the poly coating is a hard shell coating the will hold up for many many years.
OMG Pete..... You did such a amazing job. I have watched so many video's today as I am getting ready to do my kitchen cabinets. You video is by far the best and easiest to understand that even I can do it... Going to order my stain today. Can't wait to get started.... Thank you so much for sharing with us... Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!
Marla Lombardo Thank you and you're very welcome. That's why I made this video, to show that it's really not that hard to do.
I love your idea of applying the polyurethane with a rag instead of a brush. Aside from the obvious avoidance of runs, drips, etc...it gives such a nice soft, professional looking finish.
Thanks, And you get almost no bubbles in the poly with a rag.
Pete B. After watching several videos on how to use the Gel Stain, I can't wait to do it in my kitchen. My cabinets are original from the mid 50's with a honey, yellowish shellac on maple. I can't stand them! I'm really digging the Java!
I'm glad to here your kitchen came out great. I did the video out of frustration because there were no videos that were very helpful. Put a short video on youtube, I'd love to see it.
Thanks, I'm glade you liked it. It took a about a week to do because you need to let the gel stain dry over night.
Beautiful I'm definitely going with gel stain love your cabinet good tips men thanks
Pete your video is the best that I have seen for the General Finishes Gel stain. I also have rental properties but plan to try this on my kitchen within the next month. Your explanations/instructions were spot on. I appreciate your time and effort, well done!!!
Thank you!!!
Sheila Baker Thanks, and You're very welcome.
This gel stain I used was very dark and covered really well. I also did my bathroom cabinets which we're white in two coats. It's good for changing the color of your cabinets so wiping it off makes no sense unless you want some of the old color to show through? But in my case I wanted to change it. Gel stains were created originally for fiberglass doors so they cover very well. If you want the old cabinet to show though use polyshades but I did not like polyshades left to much brush lines.
Wow! that is amazing! We are in the beginning stages of picking everything for our bathroom remodel, and instead of replaces the cabinets, I am going to try this first! if it works on my cabinets, it will save me so much money! So glad I ran across this tutorial !
Amanda Glad this video helped you out.
looks great, I am going to take a shot at this in my new to me house in Washington
Great tutorial, I am just about to do my kitchen this weekend, same oak cabinets as yours! bought all the same stuff you did can't wait to see the end results!
I'm glad the video helped, I'm sure your cabinets will come out great.
Awesome job! Terrific demo video! They look great! Thanks for filming
Thank you
Thanks I'm glade it was helpful, it's actually fairly simple just time consuming.
Hi Pete - Thanks to your tutorial, we took on this project for our kitchen, and the results are amazing. Thanks again for your helpful tips!!! Would love to post pictures somehow.
Great Video Pete! I think my husband I can do this. I just have to show him this video to show him it's not that hard. Thanks!
memaw1963 Thanks, You'll be amazed how this will transform the look of your cabinets and save you a ton of money. Everyone will think you got new cabinets.
Very good video, Thorough and more detailed than most of the other videos I've seen. Your demonstration was excellent!
Deanna Norris Thank you very much.
Thanks for the compliment on the video, Yes use the synthetic steel wool but "very lightly" in between gel stain coats, especially on edges and corners because the gel stain will come off. You just want to lightly scuff the gel stain so the second coat will stick better. Once you apply the polyurethane it will have a hard shell coating to protect it for many many years. So lightly scuff in between gel stain and in between polyurethane. The last coat of polyurethane is not scuffed of course.
Do I scuff after the last coat of the gel stain?
@@crystalrendon1850 No, it's not necessary.
I did gel stain and sprayed a water-based poly 6 years ago its durable still looks good and washable
Wow.. These cabinets come out beautifully! Thank you so much for posting this video! Very detailed with all the information I need to give my cabinets a face lift! =)
Thanks, you'll have no problems with gel staining your cabinets.
This was really helpful. Thank you for explaining it so thoroughly. I'm ready to try it.
Beautiful job and explained so well. Thank you.
👍
Very informative and unlike many other videos on this subject your’s is complete. Excellent. Thank you 🙏.
I'm so glad I found your video! I'm starting my cabinet project tomorrow with the java gel stain and was planning to use the sock method. However, I'll go look for the Purdy brush today! Thanks!
TwoIslandsGirl Glad the video helped you out. Yes the purdy brush is much better. Just apply the gel stain like paint but not to thick. A little goes a long way. Don't worry about trying to make it cover in the first coat, the second coat will cover any area that was applied to thin.
How’d it come out? I’m so anxious and curious as to how this will come out. 😅😩. Already have the products... tomorrow is the big day 😆🙏🏾
@@imdoinbttrthnu The results were fantastic! Its absolutely beautiful. I wish I could send you pics. Ensure that the gel dries well between coats and you'll be good to go. You will love it!
Thanks I'm glad you liked the video. I really never liked foam brushes plus you really can't get it to the nooks and crannies. I prefer a good quality brush as I showed in the video with soft bristles. Do not use a natural bristle brush, it's to stiff and will leave a bad finish.
This was very helpful. I am getting ready to do my kitchen cabinets. Your cabinets turned out beautiful. Polished silver hardware would really pop on these.
Thanks, Yes the polished silver would look good but this was a rental I have.
Thanks, I hope it works out for you.
Love it looks great. Your video has really made me confident that I can do this. Thanks
Brock Sears Thanks, I'm glad the video helped you out.
Thanks, I'm not sure where to buy in Canada but all home improvement stores will carry the minwax fast drying poly. I know minwax just came out with there version of espresso gel stain. Also check wood specialty shops. Otherwise you'll have to buy it from the general finishes web site.
Thank you.
Just saw your previous comments hope two quarts is enough since my kitchen seems fairly the same size as yours. But I might need more since I now want to do my front door and my bathroom cabinets:)
Thank you for the great video! We were going to paint our bathroom cabinets with the Cabinet Transformations product but I started thinking of staining them (since they are a mahogany wood) and decided to do that instead. We have a Woodcraft store about 30 minutes from us so going to go and buy this weekend. Thank you again!! Can't wait to get started.
anitagreg2010 Great, I'm glad you liked the video. Watch my other video "How to gel stain kitchen cabinets" the link is at the beginning of this video or just click this link ruclips.net/video/plePW69gKcw/видео.html It's more detailed then the first video.
Great Job! Thanks for posting this. I have a kitchen cabinet project as well.
Hey! Good job. Thanks so much for making this video.
Thank you this is very helpful, I tried following the directions on the can, doesn't work, I have 35 doors and the frames to do - your method works wonderful, mostly I am doing 3 coats for each - it does take time - I am using black over my Golden oak, I have actually stripped and sanded because of 30 years of use, but where I don't need to sand and strip - on my cabinet frames I have just lightly sanded - this product is amazing. I am half way done and so happy I found your link. Thank you!
Thank you, I also have another gel staining video that might help. ruclips.net/video/plePW69gKcw/видео.html
Great video! Do I need to use the steel wool between every coat of gel and Polly and if so do I need to what it also can I use a WIPE on poly
Wow! This is the best video on youtube! Thank you!
queenofgypsies You're welcome
Looks really nice.
Thank you
Beautiful! This is very helpful video. Thank u and great job!
Hi Tina, The brand name is "General finishes gel stain" and the color is "Java". First make sure you clean cabinets as in video and let dry. Then scuff the cabinets with 3M medium stripping pads, then gel stain let dry to next day. Then "lightly" scuff with synthetic steel wool pads #000 and apply second coat of gel stain let dry again. Then "lightly" scuff with steel wool again and apply polyurethane let dry, scuff again with steel wool pads and apply a second coat of poly let dry and your done
Thanks, It took 1-1/2 quart cans with two coats.
Yes, Originally gel stain was made for fiberglass doors so you can pretty much use it on any cabinet surface.
Thank you so much for making this helpful video! 🤝👏
Great video!!!! Thanks for sharing!
Outstanding job Pete! You solved my problem
Gary C. Thank you and you're welcome.
Thanks, I get better coverage with a brush, but don't use a natural bristle brush it's to stiff and will leave lines exposing the original finish. The gel stain is kind of self leveling meaning any area that my seem a little on the thick side when applying will disappear. I also did white bathroom cabinets with this gel stain in two coats. I really didn't think the fumes where that bad and my wife being sensitive to those type of fumes had no problem helping me.
Beautiful results
Thank you. I also have a better detailed video on gel staining here ruclips.net/video/plePW69gKcw/видео.html
Thank you for the video, your video among others is simple elegant and best
Thanks, I really appreciate that.
Absolutely beautiful...learned great tips thankyou
Glad it was helpful!
AWESOME job!!!!!! This helped me a lot.
Karla Bates Thank you
Looks fabulous you did a great job
Thank you
I ALSO HAVE A RENTAL AND WAS THINKING ABOUT RE DOING MY OAK CABINETS AS WELL. I AM GOING TO GO WITH A LIGHTER COLOR BECAUSE THE KITCHENS NOT THAT BIG. I LOVE THE JOB YOU DID THANKS
Kathleen Vincent Sounds good, you should have no problems.
well done, video was very clear and concise. thank you!
Thank you
Great video with lots of good details. I want to try it on maple cabinets. Thanks
Thanks, your cabinets will look great.
Thanks pete!
This video rocks! I have watched several others that mention other methods of application. If you decide to go with other methods (i.e. sock) of application, please DO NOT!! The Purdy brush saved my life and the look of my cabinets!
Silvia Pugh Thanks, I'm glad the video helped you out. I use a brush and not a sock because gel stain was originally designed for fiberglass doors that have that wood look to them. So you apply it like paint is several thin layers.
This is amazing! Can you please list in the description box everything you used? We are trying to gel stain our cabinets too because it would cost us 3,000 professionally and this looks amazing. I'm a little nervous about doing it but it will save us so much money in the long run. It would be great to know what you were using so I can take to home depot and buy what I need. Thank you!
Great video! Thank you!!!
Great job, good tips. I did one sink cabinet in the master bath, gotta do the other sink cabinet.
Thanks, I'm sure they will come out nice.
looks great!
Thank you
Very easy to do steps and beautiful work. Great!!!
spparida1 Thank you.
you did an amazing job thanks for sharing
Kathleen Vincent You're welcome
Hi Pete, great video. so basically you sanded the cabinets, applied the gel stain, applied the polyurethane, scruffed it with steel wool pad, applied the gel stain polyurethane again Thank you so much for your help.
Job looks great. Thanks for all the helpful tips.
3971pelon Thank you.
Here's a link to my other more detailed video on How to gel stain kitchen cabinets. ruclips.net/video/plePW69gKcw/видео.html
I just finished mine and turned out great. I didn't use a poly, since I like the matte look. Thank you for the video!
I gel stained my bathroom cabinets to match a new vanity, i rolled it on with a sponge roller, took two coats, cant see the wood grain. Went to a coffee color from a cinnamon color.
I used shellac to seal it, then i did two coats of wipe on poly. Was two years ago, now im going to do my kitchen ones.
Great job-- looks awesome!!! im going to do mine, lot cheaper than buying new!!
Thanks for sharing! I am going to 'attempt' this! :-)
Great tips!
Thanks
Great tutorial, Pete. I am planning to do this to my bathroom cabinets soon for the first time. Curious…what made you want to use a brush rather than a sock as most DIYers use? I'm sensitive to vapors; is the gel stain and polyurethane highly toxic in fumes/vapors?
Hello Pete, amazing job on refinishing your kitchen cabinets! I've been seeing this gel stain around for a while but your tutorial is by far the easiest I've seen. On your instruction to use synthetic wool in between, did you do it the way you sanded it? What's the purpose for buffing it? Its been almost two months since you've uploaded your video, how are the cabinets holding up? How should it be cleaned after being stained? I am new to DIYing so I wanted to know as much before starting. Thanks
i think this video very helpful and good experience for people that wants to refinish the old cabinet they will save alot of money and have fun
Yes you are correct.
Now you just need some stainless steel appliances to complete the look! Wow what an amazing job for a fraction of the cost. Now i wish i had never took down and thrown out my old cabinets! I think you should put down how much it cost to do the job :)
Hello Pete, great work on your cabinets !! This vid just boosted my confidence on starting my project sooner ... Although I did wanna know..did you stain both sides of the cabinet door in one process or did you double back and stain the other side of the door seperately ?
The minwax polyurethane is just easier to get and works well. I'm sure the others work just as good.
Great video. Thanks!!
Thank you!
It should look like chocolate pudding but don't eat it :-) You should be able to dip your brush in it. But if you can't than something is not right. Try mixing it with a paint stick or shaking the can for a while. But if it's hard like paste than return it.
oops, I didn't think of that :) Those I looked at, some were finishing tables that had most of the color gone, so it would have made sense there. I don't like polyshades either. I like to mix color stains sometimes, and only put the poly on once I an satisfied with how the color turned out.
I finish raw wood frames for my canvas art, but in that case I don't wipe the stain off either, just paint it on like you did. Thanks for the great video :)
hi, great job! did you have to wipe off the gel stain 10 minutes or so after you applied it or does all of it dry into the wood?
Great video!!!!!!! Do you think I Can I do this to my dining room table?
very helpful ... i was going to paint my cabinets but now instead im just going to stain them. love ur video i will be practicing with a different color though because that one is to dark. will get working on my cabinets now and purchase everything. thank you so much ur awesome keep making videos like this.
You're welcome, Just make sure you use "gel stain" and not regular stain.
Yes i will also where can i purchase this brand looked for it on hom depot cldnt find it
I bought it at a place here in Houston called "Houston Hardwoods" try a wood specialty shop or you'll have to buy it on line. It's going to be about $50.00 a quart but it goes a long way.
Okay thank you so much i appreciate it
Try a woodworking store, not a big box store. I also bought mine here in Houston at Woodcrafters but is was only about $23-$25 for the quart.
So professionally done, very helpful tutorial...thanx for sharing this with us never seen this before.one question where i can buy this gel and poly in canada?
Go to the general finishes web site and click on where to buy and it should show you local wood specialty places that sell it or just order it on line.
Good job
Hi there. Great video. I did a practice cabinet last week using regular stain so I had to take it down to the bare wood. This seems so much easier. I ordered some of this gel stain from Amazon today so I'll try it as soon as it arrives. One question - I used a foam brush for the regular stain. Will that work with the gel stain too?
Pete - is it easy to clean the Purdy brush and use it again with smooth bristles.
Hi Pete, Thanks for the very informative video. Did you use a Satin Polyurethane? How well are they holding up with your tenant? Thanks
Very Respectfully,
With All Due Respect,
Good Gods Day,
Mr. Pete,
Your video is the absolute best of how to use the Java Gel Stain I have seen, thank you Sir for your time and your very detailed explanation and your real video demostration. As you were demonstrating each step, I was asking questions and you absolutely answered all of my questions in your video. Thank you again Sir! Your rental property kitchen looks Brand New!
F💡💡D FOR THOUGHT:
Keep Up The Great Work Mr. Pete!
Thank you so much, you made my day :) I also have another gel staining video that is more detailed ruclips.net/video/plePW69gKcw/видео.html thanks again.
Pete B.

Good God's Day,
Mr. Pete,
You are very welcome Sir, I am about to watch the suggested video of the more detailed Gel Stain use instructions, Thank you Sir.
Have a Blessed Day Mr. Pete!
Pete B. E
I just ordered this stain I've read and seen a couple of tutorials but it seems you did it a lot easier with the paint brush seemed less messy. I was wondering if you ended up using all of the two quarts?
just beautiful
Thank you
You are very welcome. Much deserved.
thank you pete
You're welcome!
