That’s the drill instructor. He only has 30 pounds on his back because he has to be able to run up and down to motivate the recruits. So on the final hill it’s a lot easier for him to climb because he has to do it a bunch throughout the whole hike, while screaming and having not slept just like the recruits.

I came from chicago. Running out there and playing high level sports, I thought I was in great shape. And I was. But those elevation runs were just brutal, never really was in any foothills or any of this or the other hills in the background. Its flat by me. After 50 some hours and sprinting up this to the end, I was in a bad way wasnt sure I'd make it. If I slowed fellow recruits grabbed a handful of uniform dragged me or we stopped to pick up another that tripped and all made it. Still one of the best days of my life😊

Had 2 guys in one of our sister platoons sick but wouldnt quit and drop to another platoon halfway through the crucible. One of their DIs stayed with them until they made it to the top. Rumor was that one nearly passed out from exhaustion and sickness and the DI told him "you didnt come all this way to fail now" and carried him the last few steps. That DI was the "baby hat" amd was loved by everyone. He won DI of the year in his first year.

  • @Dark-RadioOfficial

I remember being so beyond my limit with how tired, hungry, and dehydrated that I thought about just flopping over halfway through behind a pair of corpsmen… then the ceremony broke me when my Senior DI handed me my EGA and told me to be proud of what I had accomplished. It was at that moment that my life before that ended and I was practically reborn. All that fatigue and doubt faded away as we marched back as Marines who earned their place in the brotherhood. Humble beginnings indeed, but worth every damn bit of blood, sweat, and tears…

Obviously from our perspective cool but not a planned thing. It was impossible not to get overwhelmed at the moment. That will always be one of the most incredible experiences in my life.
