Mate! What on earth were we thinking?! I knew as soon as I saw the chimney what was coming!!🙈 Really fun to listen to your recollection of events, as they differ somewhat from my own! Hardly surprising given the amount of elapsed time since then, and the amount of alcohol likely consumed in the hours preceding the event! I recall, as do you, that it was early one morning, after a session at The Pav, so around 0200hrs. I also recall the little bit of scaffolding at the very top. I recall the ladder was a rusty old iron one, attached (loosely) to the chimney. I thought I remembered us both climbing swiftly to the top, fuelled by the courage of Newcy Brown. Then I thought I recalled us sat atop, legs dangling inside, chatting for a while. Then, I thought I recalled that we must have nodded off for a short time, as I seem to recall waking up with a start, just as it was coming light, and almost soiling myself as I realised where we were! I thought we then started to climb down, and discovered that the ladder, as well as having several rungs broken, or missing… was only very loosely attached to the chimney! I recall it creaking and swaying, and it taking far longer to climb back down having rapidly sobered up, than it took to scoot up there! But, of course, as I said: my recollection may have become warped and exaggerated over the many years since then! But like you, every time I pass the mill, a little shiver runs down my spine as I think what might have been! Thankfully, by the grace of God, we lived to tell the tale… whichever version of it is closest to being accurate! Another reason why I stick to Yorkshire Tea these days!! Great video, as always, Brother. Thank you for sharing and making me smile… albeit through gritted teeth!! 😬🙏🏻💙
Good job your not scared of heights and had a sobering epinine up there lol. It's always special seeing Matlock and the A6 in your videos, me and my family scattered my mums ashes to the side of black rock in 2017 and it brings back bitter sweet memories. When I was a kid we always used to go to the chip shop at the top of the hill in Matlock on a Friday, drive back to Matlock bath and sit beside the river eating the fish and chips. Thank you for taking me back there
I too grew up on Black Rocks. I remember one time, my friends and me had climbed up inside one of the caves, and just sat there playing, hanging out, as you do, and these rock climbers climbed up with all their ropes etc and looked flabbergasted at us boys.. “er, how did you get up here”?! “We just climbed”! Haha
Hi Richy, that made me remember watching the steeple jack Fred Dibnah lashing old wooden ladders together on the side of some of those old mill chimneys, you never know it may have been him doing the work on that stack back then. But you survived to tell the tale, that's being pissed and thinking you're immortal. good story. Thank you.
I watched this video (great btw) when it was uploaded, you did say weather permitting, I've kept a close eye on it, but unfortunately it does seem as though there is rain forecast, is the ride/meet still gonna go ahead or will it be cancelled? I ask because im south of Birmingham and i didn't want to make the trip if no-one is there 😊. Thanks for sharing and see you on your next adventure ✌️ 🤙 🤟 (P.s. watched and liked your recent one after this (Q&A)
Had my Klan heated fleece about 30 years now and done probably 100,000+ miles in it (normally used under textiles as super warm but bulky) and it's still going strong and looking good. Also have had a Klan heated shirt for about 20+ years (used under leathers as a much thinner garment) also still going strong, if a little snug these days lol. Klan seem to have disappeared from UK but still available in Europe bike outlets. As you say a real game changer for winter. Crossing Europe early season one year it was dry but super cold and I'm sure that heated fleece kept me alive in the extreme wind chill experienced.
Stayed at Cromford a couple of years ago and walked via the Mill to Matlock Bath, think we all done mad things as lads but thats crazy but memorably good. Cheers Richy
Great video Mr V love the story we have all done something like that when we were kids just don’t tell your mum or dad …… I brought myself the same heated gloves and like you say it’s a game changer I would go as far as to say on some wintery mornings at 5:30 I enjoy the ride to work knowing I’m not going to get cold Catch you on the next video Cheers
My daughters boyfriend did an inspection on that chimney last month, says its in a bit of a state at the top now. He had to put his own ladder up as he climbed up it. It wasn't at night time though and he was sober, as you say its mad the things we did as kids. Great vlog Rich.
That story reminded me of a mate of mine many years ago who did a similar thing, climbing a flagpole in a far off land to acquire the Scottish flag from the top. Sadly his story didn't have a happy ending and unlike you he didn't live to tell the tale. Glad you survived your moment of madness or we'd all be missing out on all these great vids.
Hi Richy. As you mentioned it I would like to thank you when you mentioned your diet in the summer. I thought "I can do that" So I did. Lost a stone which was most welcome. Now the winter is here just have to be careful of the cold weather, long nights and more temptation to comfort eat.
You'd best keep off the beer Richy, I rode past 2 days ago and noticed a ladder, all the way to the top... (or all't way t'top for those that speak the lingo, like my in-laws 😊)
While doing some repair working on the huge boilers at Fiddlers Ferry power station in the 70's I discovered my fear of heights. I had to leave the site and go back to the company I was working for in Trafford Park. I didn't care if they fired me I was not going back to the power station ! Working on planks and scaffolding at height was definitely not for me.
Was you on your way home from the pav, some good nights had there, when I look back some of the stupid things we used to do at black rocks I wonder how on one had an accident.
Hey Richy, great story. Lots of daft stuff done when I was young in NI. Difference for us was when we did daft stuff we had heavily armed police and Army folk on hand. My fear of heights is kicking in , argh! C 😂
as kids we all did silly stuff like that and i remember the scaffold on the chimmey around that time too think i was a smidge younger .. well sure we are all glad nothing happended that night...
When we think back to the things we did as youngsters it makes us wonder how we are still alive lol. My thing was trees, if it was there i had to climb it. One was by my nans house in a place called sandycroft. From the top you could see the whole of the area for miles around. Its only when you think back, you realise how dangerous it was. But to climb to the top of that chimney....its a no from me lol.
Time to get the Skipping rope out 😊, cheaper than putting the heating on ,stuff paying big gas bills😮, only joking, I've a few health issues, so i can't get cold, it's not good for me . and can't skip any more it's in my kit bag , Another beautiful building ,looking like its empty, What a total waste,
I used to use the electric stuff you plug into the bike but I stopped. It failed a couple of times (not Keis stuff), froze my bits off- having a jacket that has its own rechargeable battery is better.
we have all done it richy . drinks in sense out . remember being in bowness on windermere on a night out and climbing the large flagpole to shall we say retrieve a flag from the top and me mates saying get down get down ,i said il be just a minuet . turned around and the police where stopped in the car pointing down at me with a very angry finger . you have to look back and laugh at how stupid we all where when young. 😄😄
Hey Richy, hammered or not... I've already told you, you have a pair on cahoonies on you. Love the story... made me laugh at the end saying to dad "it wasn't you". Would love to make the ride, just live too far. Enjoy the ride all.
Cracking vid as usual, just be careful putting a bigger fuse in suzuki's wiring, it may not be a high enough amp to run the clothing unlike the clothing wiring that can go straight to the battery. Isn't it normal to do things like that when you are young and daft ? The vast majority of us survived that stage to carry on doing more daft things in later life . The human race are risk takers, it's our nature and the reason why we are the top animal on the planet.
Talking about stupidity and bikes: back in the 60’s my girlfriend and I regularly rode 200 miles (Cambridge to Yarmouth and back) on a summers evening wearing T shirts & jeans WITHOUT HELMETS! often at around 90mph on the A11. When asked by parents: “where have you been” our reply was “hanging around at the fish shop”. My dad was a cop too!! We are both still around aged 80…..🤪
Nice to be able to afford/be given all the best gear and have the heating on 24/7 in the house. Just remember, Not all your viewers are so lucky next time you brag about how good life is for you.
Yea, it's probably the hard graft Richy does in the 95% of his life he doesn't share on youtube that helps. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions from a small snapshot. I'll bet you wouldn't be happy with the conclusion people draw about you from this one bitchy little comment.
Have a word. Wasn’t exactly “bragging” was I? I was sharing and trying to help others make the decision. And it’s taken me nearly 10yrs (yes, 10) of bloody hard work to get to this point. 5 of those probably never earned a penny, either.
@@RichyVida you always get one mate he must have been having a bad day. Big smiles 😊 All the hard work you do the event you but on every year for everyone. You keep us all entertained with your brilliant videos. And I no everyone loves what you do for us all, big thumbs up 👍👍

Amazing!
@@RichyVida Not really….JUST THE PLAIN STUPIDITY OF YOUTH !!
Have you ever heard of climate crisis?
??
Nice to be able to afford/be given all the best gear and have the heating on 24/7 in the house.
Just remember, Not all your viewers are so lucky next time you brag about how good life is for you.
Yea, it's probably the hard graft Richy does in the 95% of his life he doesn't share on youtube that helps. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions from a small snapshot. I'll bet you wouldn't be happy with the conclusion people draw about you from this one bitchy little comment.
Dont think he was bragging mate, just talking about putting a log on the fire,as for his gear, suppose if he works for it,thats how he spends dollar
@@bren106I totally agree like Richy says at the end of his video be careful be KIND. 👍👍
