  • Los Angeles session guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Synowiec is in demand, recording many different “vibey” instruments as well as straight up electric guitars in his House Of Syn Studios.
    In this video, Andrew shows how he keeps two R-122 MKll’s permanently mounted on a movable stereo bar and uses them to record all of his many acoustic instruments. Great demos of Andrew recording the charango, dobro, bouzouki, ukulele, acoustic guitar, nylon string guitar, baritone acoustic guitar and 12-string guitar.

    That uke is magic through them. Hard to capture that shuka shuka from the rhythm on a uke.

    Really nice! Thanks for posting this and the technical information at the end as well.
    If you have any other “all-ribbon” mic recorded sessions that would be excellent!
    I’ll check your channel. There all too many sessions done combining condenser mics with ribbons and that often defeats the reason to use ribbons due to the fact that condensers have extremely exaggerated high frequencies and mask the subtler and truer ribbons.
    I have a extensive collection of vintage ribbon mics that I started back in the late 90s.

    This sounds like one of those mics where you barely need to grap an EQ.
    It sounds like I would imagine how it would sound in person.
    Royers are always amazing on stringed instrument no matter which one you have.

    Sounds like some reverb was added as well - any info on that? Thanks

      Yes a bit of 'verb added in ProTools, tweaked to taste.

    Andrew awesome presentation. How do you combat bleed from the click track while using live mics?

    • @andrewsynowiec
      @andrewsynowiec 3 года назад +1

      Hi Roger, I'm using closed-back headphones so click bleed is usually not a problem. I will automate in ProTools if necessary.

    Hey Andrew! Do you not have to worry about the "3 to 1 rule" here? Are these panned hard left and hard right? What about in mono? Thanks in advance. Great review video

    • @TiqueO6
      @TiqueO6 4 года назад

      Yes, let’s sum to mono to test. But since the off-axis null is so deep on figure of 8 ribbons (especially the ones fully centered front to back in the motor) it might be less of an issue here?

    • @andrewsynowiec
      @andrewsynowiec 3 года назад

      They are hard panned but sound good when summed to mono too. I usually have them fairly close so I believe they're in spec to the "3 to 1" rule - in the end all that matters is the final result of course!

    What mic position would this be categorized as? Spaced pair? Are both ribbons facing directly forward?

    • @parodifair4459
      @parodifair4459 3 года назад

      That looks like Tony Faulkner's spaced pair setup for bidirectional mics. 20 cm apart, facing forward at the same angle.

    • @TimMilliken
      @TimMilliken 2 года назад

      I love ortf but it’s not a real rule. I’d probably do a direct placement towards the twelfth fret and an angle towards the bridge.

    Excellent video! What stereo bar are you using with them? are those the Royer Shockmounts? Thank you!

    • @royerlabs
      @royerlabs  2 года назад +1

      Hey! Yes, those are Royer Sling-Shocks Andrew is using. He has used them in that configuration for years. Andrew is using a normal stereo bar - not sure which brand, but you can set up a pair of mics in Sling-Shocks in that configuration on most available stereo bars!

      I think only because we are accustomed to exaggerated high end due to condensers, although the ribbons tend to be more gentle even if you add the high end as in these clips. Exaggerated highs tend to be a “crutch“ for some performers if they are listening on headphones or monitors because they don’t have to “emote“ as much. I’ve seen numerous times in the studio when a person is using an un-eq'd ribbon the tend to put out more expression to get the message through.

      You could probably buy a pair of used Beyerdynamic m160 for a reasonable price and get a similar sound. Maybe add a cloud lifter booster or the Royer dbooster for a push in the signal
