At a time when ribbon mics had all but completely fallen out of vogue, David Royer envisioned a ribbon-based design that was rumored to have had one unusual imperative: to be able to capture the sounds of the full scale of a pipe organ clearly and faithfully. A tall order? Most definitely. Whether or not the myth is true, Royer’s R-121 ribbon microphone was the result of that venture 25 years ago, and the R-121 has cemented itself as one of the best mics to come out of the 21st century. From its sonic flexibility and immense SPL to its sleek form factor and premier ribbon design, the R-121 can handle just about anything you can imagine - and maybe more. Join Mitch Gallagher to see what Royer’s iconic mic is truly capable of doing!

The SM57 and the R-121 couldn't be more different. One can't handle a puff of air and the other is able to fall off the Empire State Building unscathed. Together in a studio though, peanut-butter and jelly!

122’s are better no need to crank the preamps and lower noise floor
