This one was even a bit of a surprise to me….. By the way! When we wrap up, I’ll be hanging out LIVE on @TokyoLensShorts for a while!! LONDON & AMSTERDAM People!! Event Tickets NOW AVAILABLE!! Amsterdam: bit.ly/TLAmsterdam London: bit.ly/TLLondon
As a megastructure and history enthusiast, I'd love to know when that dam was built. It consists of a row of small arch dams connected by supporting towers, which is a configuration I had never seen before. Even more intriguing is that instead of being completely solid, the towers route spill water through their insides, which is a very surprising choice considering those towers are holding the pressure of all the water behind the dam. It reminds me of Victorian era dams like the Lake Vyrnwy reservoir in Wales.
I've stopped on my hikes just to take pictures of stairs simply because they are aesthetically pleasing and leave the viewer wondering where it leads to. So I get it.
Fun location to visit. Really a shame it is not near any of the Japanese public transit. Please include a google maps link or name in the description. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
I cannot see a waterfall and pools without wanting to dangle my feet in. The drive was also so nice. It's very relaxing to watch someone else navigate country roads, haha.
It is a concrete reservoir dam with a length of 145.5m and a height of 30.4m. Both ends are gravity-type and the central section is a multiple arch type consisting of five arches and six buttresses. Its pioneering and rare structural form is highly valuable in the history of agricultural civil engineering and demonstrates the level of technological achievement in dam construction in the early Showa period. It was designated an Important Cultural Property (Structure) on December 19th, 2006. Construction began in 1926 and was completed in November 1929.
This was five months ago but I'm so glad to see this now in December 2024. Again I say Japan is the most beautiful natural country. Thank you so much for your dedication to showing the country. This was a trip worth the drive.
Wooooooooowwwwwww. Think this might be the most beautiful trip you've taken. The woods. The truck out of nowhere. And that Dam..... I don't ever remember seeing such a pretty dam that just invites you to climb all over the places you're not supposed to climb! Thanks for taking us along on this one!
It’s wild how picturesque that dam is, crazy! And Norm you absolutely are that double rainbow guy freaking out over some stairs but that’s why we love watching you.
I can't understate how much this looks like a drive through here in West Virginia. Nothing like a cruise down a nice Country Road to a great fishing hole.
One of your best ideas! Loved this video! This reminds me of the roads where I grew up in Northern California, USA. Woah! That 360 degree turn! That view. Bit of a heart attack with that last car. Everything is so green. I'm so glad you did this. I can hear the water at the dam. I can't tell where the water is coming out of. STAIRS! The footage is beautiful. I got so much more than just a drive. I hope you'll consider doing another driving video. Gorgeous view of the lake. Those beautiful purple or pink flowers! I see where the water is coming out of the dam now. So nice. Peaceful. As always, much love from the Southern California Desert. 🏜 ❤
This should be in an anime if it isn't already, it gives off a mysterious, old and serene vibe. Would be great for a fantasy or magical or historical or slice of life anime/manga/game.
I actually enjoyed this video quite a bit. The driving bit was interesting to watch. It made me feel like I was sitting in the truck with you. The view was breath taking and that Dam was gorgeous. Very Ghibli like. Also very serene. I love places like that.
amazing drive! I'm certainly not confident with driving this road 😅 so thank you for taking us with you and showing us this beautiful scenery you're so right it's just like a ghibli movie! love all your videos!!
Every time I watch your videos, I want to go back to Japan. This whole video brought back so many wonderful memories. Please visit Southern Nagano prefecture someday! I mean VERY south, like almost to Aichi prefecture. It's absolutely stunning down there.
My 3 winters in Japan, I had 4km of road to open every morning in a snowcat. Most mornings there was 50Cm - 1m of fresh snow. On the bridges I had 5cm of clearence each side in a 4.8m wide vehicle, with a moderate snowpack I regularily had 1m+ of overhand on one side. Oh 90% of the road no guard rail. The guard rail was normaly under 2m of snow if there was any.
Now that's a nice little secluded gem. Love how it's just sequestered away from everything else. Easily one of the coolest looking dams I've seen. Combine that with the great mountain roads and you've really got yourself a fantastic adventure filled with stunning scenery. Actually really surprised nobody was on top of the damn. That view is incredible!
This is a pretty unique looking dam in a gorgeous setting. I get the excitement. I’m really digging these little freeform videos you’ve been doing - thanks for sharing!
I love this video! Shikoku ist really amazing. I've already been to Matsuyama, Takamatsu (twice) and to Marugame but I want to come back and see more 😊
I don't know which I like better the hiking trails or the pleasant drive. One thing I know is this series of videos makes me want to visit Japan more than I already did, and I didn't think that was even possible. Thanks! Norm.❤😊
Yay another treat! The drive to the wet wall was cool. The wet wall was beautiful as well, located in a gorgeous area. Thank you Norm. Also loved drive perspective, it let's us see a bit more of a larger area and your journey. But I can also understand that it will put a strain on your focus.
You are absolutely correct. This was an awesome find. I was in awe during the drive and then blown away when we reached the dam; it was for the most part open to explore; and no people!!! You hit a hundred with this one. Thank you so much!!
YT suggested your abandoned island video (batteries) and it was fascinating, then an old abandoned school one (with the tunnel) and at some point I realized I had watched a previous one with the guy that roasts coffee that is close to the village where someone makes llfe-sized dolls... I had watched those 3 years ago.... So now I am here, after I got curious about what you are doing these days -- and this adventure did not disappoint either. Your enthusiasm and delight in the "small things" along the way is infectious and endearing. :-) BTW, I traveled in Japan in 1981/82 solo as a woman and it was incredible and very safe.
The view when you pulled up was just ... so ... dam ... amazing! (Pun fully intended). And I think the words you were searching for (regarding that drive) were "possibly terrifying". Doing that at night has got to be its own little nightmare. Although - daytime on a motorcycle would be an absolutely adrenaline rush.
This is genuinely so beautiful. I wish I could go and just take pictures and film and sit and stare for a while. It makes me miss Japan so incredibly much. One day, I'll be back and I'll be able to explore it for real. Thank you so much for sharing these explorations you go on, it lightens up my day!
Definitely not the only one that cares about stares. The very first time I visited Japan like 13 years ago I i think, for some reason I really liked to take pictures of stairs like ones that go down into the subway and curve around corners and stuff.
You said 'hit subscribe' and I was like, 'joke's on you, I already am' and then I looked and I wasn't .... now I am! Love your videos so much! I will be there in a couple years, definitely. I can't wait! あなたのビデオわとてもゆうえきです! ありがとございます! (I hope that was right, I've only just started with Hirigana)
Beautiful 🤩 thank you so much for this :D you have an amazing personality and your excitement is infectious thank you thank you thank you I really needed this joy today :DDDD
This one was even a bit of a surprise to me….. By the way! When we wrap up, I’ll be hanging out LIVE on @TokyoLensShorts for a while!!

Can't be forgotten anymore if you found it Norm
It was worth every dam minute!
I've stopped on my hikes just to take pictures of stairs simply because they are aesthetically pleasing and leave the viewer wondering where it leads to. So I get it.
23:45 oh I am absolutely smiling. that spot is amazing and those stairs are for sure 10/10.
Fun location to visit. Really a shame it is not near any of the Japanese public transit. Please include a google maps link or name in the description. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Great drive, I would sit there for hours watching the water.
Aw his attitude is so refreshing! It's nice to know I'm not the only one getting excited about some stairs in thr forest!
Including the drive up to the dam was a great touch. These Japanese roads are delightful, it's no wonder that they make such great cars.
I cannot see a waterfall and pools without wanting to dangle my feet in. The drive was also so nice. It's very relaxing to watch someone else navigate country roads, haha.

@@GBCrush This was one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time! I’m going to be rewatching it many more times, I wish so much to go there!
Definitely need to go at night and walk the path at the top of the dam.
This was phenomenal Norm..... Early LOTR vibes with a bit of Ghibli thrown in....
I live for the forest walks and agree that the stairs are a 10/10. I’d love to explore that area myself!!
It’s wild how picturesque that dam is, crazy!
And Norm you absolutely are that double rainbow guy freaking out over some stairs but that’s why we love watching you.
We would 100% look at wet walls with you every chance we get! This was so picturesque! Definitely 10/10 stairs 😊
You're definitely not the only one who loves this. I used to do this, but pre internet so it would almost always be by chance
damn norm, you have the luck of the forest spirits in finding these spots!
the dam, feels like it's from the 1920s or earlier. Chihiro could be around the corner on her way to the bath house.....
I'm smiling, my friend. Thank you, Norm...
So beautiful, thank you norm
I can't understate how much this looks like a drive through here in West Virginia. Nothing like a cruise down a nice Country Road to a great fishing hole.
WV is such a beautiful state

Loved the little road trip! And the dam was definitely worth a visit. SUCH a gorgeous place.
This should be in an anime if it isn't already, it gives off a mysterious, old and serene vibe. Would be great for a fantasy or magical or historical or slice of life anime/manga/game.
Stunning dam! And love the video!
What a beautiful find!
I actually enjoyed this video quite a bit. The driving bit was interesting to watch. It made me feel like I was sitting in the truck with you. The view was breath taking and that Dam was gorgeous. Very Ghibli like. Also very serene. I love places like that.
I definitely smiled all the way through the video. I love how excited you get when you find a trail.
25:33 that’s it, that’s the shot right there. Absolutely stunning!.
A little trip on the zen side - a true hidden Ghibli gem of a video - aaaaahhh, I am now relaxed
amazing drive! I'm certainly not confident with driving this road 😅 so thank you for taking us with you and showing us this beautiful scenery you're so right it's just like a ghibli movie! love all your videos!!
Round here the drivers heading uphill are usually given right of way. I love these mountain drives, I've moved out of the mountains now and I miss it.
What a beautiful place, and no problems with being a bit 'goofy' when you find somewhere like this. Your excitement is infectious (in a good way)!
I love dams. I used to dream about them. That dam is very much dreamworthy.
Stunning place worth the drive thanks for sharing it.
Got goosebumps the second you pulled up there. The dam and the views are awesome ❤
So so so beautiful place and nature..... Take care always norm....
So beautiful! Thanks again for another wonderful highlight to our day and sharing your travels with us!
Every time I watch your videos, I want to go back to Japan. This whole video brought back so many wonderful memories.
Please visit Southern Nagano prefecture someday! I mean VERY south, like almost to Aichi prefecture. It's absolutely stunning down there.
Awesome dam! Made of stone block, so cool. All the detail in paths and water channels. Thanks so much for sharing!
Mountain roads in Japan are still my favourite roads of all 😄 always something interesting to find!
My 3 winters in Japan, I had 4km of road to open every morning in a snowcat. Most mornings there was 50Cm - 1m of fresh snow. This was amazing!!! Thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed this video it was very calming and reminded me of the mountains of northern Alabama.
Wow the dam is most Impressive beautiful Architecture. I luv it 👍❤️❤️

loved it. the drive, the mountain roads, forest covered mountains & the almost secret dam. Your mountain adventures are my favourite!
That's a beautiful place.
This whole video was worth it...the drive-up, and this location 🤩
YT suggested your abandoned island video (batteries) and it was fascinating, then an old abandoned school one (with the tunnel) and at some point I realized I had watched a previous one with the guy that roasts coffee that is close to the village where someone makes llfe-sized dolls... The more you post from this trip the more I think I need to hire a personal driver 😂
I'm adding this to my DND Campaign/World Building! It's too gorgeous to ignore!
So beautiful! Thanks for showing this to us. The view from the top was magical. I like how there’s a small shrine at the top of the dam.
This area was so pretty, that when you asked if we were smiling with you, I actually started to tear up at how beautiful this area was.
fell asleep and missed the premiere, but wasn't disappointed with the views!
That's a lovely piece of engineering. I love the spectacular features of Dams, the lakes they cause etc... awesome stuff Norm :)

Totally worth the drive! Shame that the path on top of the dam was closed, that would have had gorgeous view.
Totally worth it. I must travel those roads someday and find all you show us and more 😁
Beautiful location! And agreed- 10/10 stairs 😊
