  • The complete list of high TSH symptoms including normal TSH levels and optimal vs normal thyroid lab tests.
Understanding if you have a high TSH is SO important because it will help you understand how well your thyroid is functioning.
TSH is produced by your pituitary gland in your brain and it tells your thyroid gland to produce more hormone.
A high TSH is associated with LOW thyroid hormone (which can be confusing but it's because of feedback loops in the brain).
The higher your TSH gets the more hypothyroid you will become and the more symptoms you will experience.
There is a difference between a NORMAL TSH and an OPTIMAL TSH.
Your doctor will try to say that a high TSH is defined as anything greater than 4.5 or 5.5.
But the optimal TSH level is anything less than 2.0 to 2.5 (depending on which study you look at). My recommendation is to keep your TSH less than 2.0 because MOST people will experience side effects as their TSH rises above 2.0.
The symptoms of a high TSH include:
    Weight gain
    Hair loss
    Infertility
    Fatigue
    Muscle pain/chronic pain
    Dry skin
    Decreased heart rate
    Decreased body temperature
    Depression
    Brain fog
    Menstrual problems
    Constipation
The higher your TSH gets the MORE symptomatic you will become. So a mildly elevated TSH is only associated with mild weight gain/fatigue but as your TSH gets higher and higher you will continue to gain weight and feel poorly.

Excellent class and thanks. My TSH is 10.5 and my T4, Free is 0.9. I am on 112 mcg Synthroid twice per day (224 mcg total). It was recently increased from 200mcg by my endocrinilogist. Usually my primary care doctor has prescribed either 175 mcg to 200 mcg according to my blood work results. I had RAI performed in 2007 for hyerthyroidism (later diagnosed as Graves Disease at Cleveland Clinic). I definitely have been experiencing hypothyroidic symptoms with major weight gain, dry flaky skin, some hair loss, severe fatigue, severe muscle weakness, severe bloat, poor memory and concentration and severe chronic pain along with nueropathy in my feet. I am nearly housebound and must use two canes or a rollator or a mobility scooter. I have suffered three heart attacks from 5/2020 to 5/2021 and continue to suffer severe hypertension despite five BP meds being prescribed. I will do whatever is needed to feel and get better and especially to no longer suffer morbid obesity complications.

Hello Dr Childs. I've just discovered your channel and want to thank you for creating such helpful videos. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in December last year and my TSH was 37.62 mU/L. I'm in the UK and the lab gave the normal ranges as 0.35 - 5.5. I was prescribed 75 mcg of Levothyroxine and my follow up blood test in January showed a TSH of 4.09mU/L. This is within range but I am still symptomatic. My main problems are tearfulness, anxiety, a shaking sensation in my body and legs and very cold hands and toes. I don't have a goitre but my throat is often sore. I am seeing my doctor soon to discuss my treatment. Thanks again for all the work you do.

I went off the med for 10 straight months and I actually felt better whiteout the medication. I did bloodwork 7 months ago and my TSH was 2.1 , repeated bloodwork 2 weeks ago and my levels are TSH 5.1 / T4 1.18- Do I really need to take medication or can I just take natural supplements? I was prescribed 50mgc this time. I do have the most common symptoms but I really feel like I was worse when taking Levo (heart palpitations, anxiety, high blood pressure, shaking hands) I was taking 75mcg before.

My TSH recently tested 5.309 (my Mom has hypothyroidism, and I've had symptoms for YEARS). My doctor doesn't think much of it, she told me this happens... Even though there is a history of thyroid disease in my family, and I'm very clearly struggling with symptoms... She wants to wait eight weeks, and retest, see if they go down, stay the same, or increase at all, but doesn't think its an indication of a thyroid issue. The range given with my results says .0350 - 4.940, so she's told me, you're barely over, its nothing....😳 IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE NOTHING.

Just had labs done last week because I’ve been without medication for a few months.
    TSH - 123.0
    FT4 - 0.65
    FT3 - 2.5
I told my endocrinologist that I didn’t feel Levothyroxine was the right choice for me because I always feel so crappy on it and can’t lose weight, plus I’ve noticed some vitiligo starting on certain parts of my body so I asked to switch to armour thyroid or NP thyroid and if that wasn’t an option, to at least add cytomel in with my Levothyroxine and was told today that she wants me to stay on my Levothyroxine and we will reassess it in 2 months 😭 I’ve been on levo for 12 years now, I feel that’s long enough to realize it’s not working for me.

I had a tsh that was “ normal” and this new dr also ordered a TSH to T4 conversion which was sky high at 9.5, more than double the high norm. I’m gaining weight extremely rapidly even when intermittent fasting and exercising. feeling dizzy , brain fog to the extreme, trouble sleeping, adrenal issues, overall horrible including rheumatic flares and major joint pain. Shin extremely dry. Muscle tone bad. Heart beat slow and I was referred to cardiologist due to the symptoms . Just got these test results back. I don’t even think Dr. has reviewed them yet. I’ve literally gained like 15 pounds in a few months that I can’t get off and the scale keeps going up and it’s not really the way I’m eating at all and I am exercising. I’m scared! Currently taking a 88mcg of synthroid and this is a new dr I am seeing that ordered tests. I had another doctor for eight years who I thought was great, but I do not recall him ever ordering a TSH to T4 conversion test on me as they have always done the basic test. “Normal normal normal,” even though I didn’t feel good for years. I have hypothyroidism and hashimotos and also rheumatism which flares in my hands worse than ever… in Feb. I got really sick and my hands and wrists felt and still feel badly sprained . They attributed this to the rheumatoid arthritis, but I have heard the rheumatoid arthritis can really be a side effect of the Hashimotos and the thyroid being off. It’s been awhile since I’ve had bloodwork done on my thyroid and no extensive has ever been done to my knowledge. I also had an ultrasound on my thyroid recently, and there was a lot of inflammation there, and more nodules that the endocrinologist just said were normal. I don’t believe that any of this is normal. My voice is even affected as well as my breathing and I have a kind of round face. What do you think? Crazy, hah? I’m 55 and and am active person pushing against the grain trapped inside this body that is not in alignment somewhere, so I’m exhausted from fighting against it.

I am from India. My thyroid gland has been removed five years ago due to papillary thyroid cancer . I have had 30mci radio iodine ablation dose after around 6 months of surgery as before that my doctors were not convinced that I need the ablation therapy as the size of my cancerous nodule was just 4mm and confined within the thyroid capsule. I am on regular yearly follow up getting done that Tg, Anti Tg and Tsh ane T4 values. Just few days ago I got my TSH done and found it had risen to 10.9 for I had decreased my dose of thyroxine for around 2 months for I had severe headache not going away and for my T4 was then in the higher number. Presently I have lot of stomach issues, it is pain inside the ribs and all over around the tummy and abdomen

All my values including Tg, Anti Tg and USG neck are normal but this time my TSH is high as it is 10.9 and I feel that all my stomach issues are because of it. Doctor I have lot of itching in my skin all over my body and my skin is so dry as it looks from scratching it . Doctor it is relevant to mention that before I was always taking 125 mg of levothyroxine and my Tsh would always be around 0.4 to 1.0 but for around two months I had reduced the dose from 125 to 100 mg as for that headache reason as I was feeling hyperthyroid and which actualy helped in that headache. Now seeing my high Tsh level I have started taking 150 mg which I am planning to take for around two three weeks and then I will get it back to 125 mg so that I get my Tsh level back to around 1.0 as my doctors want it to be always around 1. So kindly guide doctor as to whether my stomach symptoms are because of my HIGH tsh or not?
      With best regards.

TSH: 8/19-6.41; 9/20-12.25; 12/20- 14.46. Free F4- 0.7-0.8. During Covid-19 I skipped my vegan diet and the TPO level went out of control. I am skinny (120 lb), I feel fine, no symptoms yet. I do not take any medication. My doctor wants to put me on medication, but I am against it and want to heal naturally. Dr. Childs, over this pandemic, I decided to try Keto and IF. So far I have lost 17lbs in 5 mos. I did this because my GP suspected I may be diabetic, T2. I had my blood work panel done, A1c is normal, but it was revealed my TSH is 11.0. Now, I have no apparent symptoms, no fatigue, no weight gain ( quite happy for my weight loss), little hair loss/falling ( I have very thick hair ). My cholesterol is elevated as a result. The doctor upped my Synthroid but I will not take it as I have had a terrible reaction twice to the medication when I was seeing an endocrinoligist, it was stopped. Now, my GP wants me to start a Statin for which I will not do it. Not with the numerous side effects associated with this medication. How can my numbers go down? I will say Keto/ IF have made me feel right as rain, both physically and mentally. Gone is that sluggish, burdened and tired individual. Clarity is much better and I feel brighter and perkier.

Thanks for the information you put out. I was diagnosed a couple of years ago and my TSH was 290 with a T4 of 4. I was 34 and had always been very fit and healthy. It took about 18 months for my numbers to get into range.
The symptoms I experienced were noticeably cold hands, bad health anxiety, visual disturbances and occasional palpitations; which prompted me to visit the Dr who organised the bloods which exposed the problem.
I’m currently taking 125mcg of levothyroxine and my TSH is 1.5. I don’t feel that much better since commencing treatment, crippling brain fog is my main symptom at the moment.

I had a thyroidectomy Nov 2019 and my TSH levels have gone from one end of the range to the other. My Levothyroxine dosage has been lowered twice. The most recent TSH done a couple of weeks ago showed 35.5 (not a typo). Dr has made yet another adjustment to meds. Out of the symptoms shown, I def have low heart rate (but thought it was because I’ve increased my workouts while at home), brain fog, menstrual issues (I’m 49 and drs keep telling me I’m “too young” for perimenopause 😫) and this fatigue is really debilitating (I am struggling to do my normal routine just around the house). I don’t have any weight gain, but my weight loss has been going downward (just slow and incremental, so not complaining). Dr wants my labs done again in 6 weeks.
I’ve tried looking at the section on your website for thyroidectomy, but for some reason, none of the links are opening on my iPad (I will try the website from my laptop).

Hi Dr. Childs. My TSH was last measured as 32 and my TPO was around 320. At first my TSH was very low and now it is high. I have found in reading comments here and there to thyroid videos that taking ashwagandha can cause hyperthyroidism in some people and it was in a herbal blood pressure supplement. When I stopped that, the TSH went high. I am also post Covid and have read that can cause thyroid problems. Added to that Calcium Channel blockers. I suspect one or more these as causal and may never know. I have stopped all of these and am on a beta blocker for pulse rate and blood pressure with the TSH being high now.

    High heart rate
    Fatigue
    Major hair loss
    Dry skin/horrible acne breakouts
    Shakiness
    Dry mouth
    Insomnia
    Dizziness
    20 pound weight gain
    Along with 2 miscarriages
With all of this I have developed anxiety and depression with a few major panic attacks.
When I initially started having some of these symptoms my THS was 1.7 I was just tested again yesterday for the first time and I’m now at 3.5.
I have had multiple X-rays (normal) a Ct of my chest (normal) a 48 hour heart monitor (normal) chest mri (normal) probably about 13 normal EKG’s many many labs that come back normal for the most part aside for a low potassium every now and then. Wow, this is thorough info. Had to watch this (and others) several times to get a better understanding.
I'm researching this info on behalf of my mother. She was bummed out over a week ago when she received her physical exam back. She turned 63 in June and had HypoT...for years. Has been taking Levothyroxine for a long time.
    Her TSH is 4.690 u/UmL & T4, Free (direct) 1.10ng/dL
These numbers are conflicting with other sites/videos I watched where it states these TSH readings are still within range Other sites states it's out of range/too high.
So now her primary doctor raised her medication to a higher dose for the next 6+ weeks.
    What do you reckon?
FYI - She doesn't suffer any of the symptoms mentioned in this vid or other sites.
I'm a personal trainer myself, thus I have her on a well balanced diet, of all food groups. She engages in strength training and cardio exercises several times a week. Compared to 2+ years ago, she feels fine and performs great. .

I need input on my level that was given to me today of a 10.6 TSH.
The drs wants to put me on a thyroid harmone but, I want to try a natural alternative before I'm put on prescription medication because I've heard a d read that being put on thyroid harmone medication right away can interfere with the thyroid & cause it to shut completely down all because of maybe a temporary cause of low production of tsh, t3 & t4.
What can I do from a natural perspective that truly works to get my tsh levels down quickly?
Also, can medications such as eliquis or a statin drug cause my tsh levels to become high.
I ask this because at my last dr check up around 6 months ago the Dr didn't say anything about my tsh level being high.
So, my question is what is the cause and I had a stroke back in August of 2022 and it's right at a year and from the stroke was put on Eliquis, and a generic form of lipitor and now the Dr says that in doing my blood work that she see's that my tsh level is at 10.6.
What can come with such a high level of tsh and what could you advise or recommend for me to start doing to get my levels down as quickly as possible.
And last but not least I have and have had for decades a lot of the systems you mention for hypothyroidism.
So, PLEASE help me so that if I can avoid having to take prescription meds for this then I will do whatever is necessary to get my levels down as quickly as possible.
Please advise as soon as possible.
Hope to get a response very soon.

But what if a patient has high TSH levels, but normal T3 and T4, and even free T4?
In that case, the patient has low heart rate and weight gain, the other symptoms are not shown. Can the diagnostic be sub clinical hypothyroidism?
And should be medicated or not?

    • @carolinewhite5822
      @carolinewhite5822 4 года назад

It is very rare for Drs in the U.S. to allow patients to go untreated until they become clinically hypo with Low T4 or Low T3. So Yes, if you have a High TSH and Normal T4&T3 you should be medicated with thyroid hormone replacement medication, [unless the cause is pituitary (rare) and not common thyroid disease]. A TSH above 10 is known to be a risk factor for heart disease. That low blood pressure of yours may benefit from thyroid medication. According to a population study I read, 70% of adults without thyroid disease have a TSH level under 2.5. That means that only 30% of the adult population has a TSH over 2.5 without thyroid disease. You can imagine that if you are medicated to a TSH of 3 or 4, you may still feel hypo symptoms. Most people may feel their best with a TSH under 2.5. The other one has said that medication is needed for at least a month, the medication was about 25 micrograms but one day of medication is followed by one day without the medication, but the results of the laboratory were the same. So they decided to test one month without medication again to test.

For about a week leading up to that, I was experiencing serious fatigue, but also instances of tachycardia and feeling flush.

My TSH was 110 when i was first diagnosed 18 years ago. Dr. couldn't believe i was still functioning. I fell asleep on a red light while driving luckily it was still red when I forced open my eyes. Felt like I had slept a whole 8 hrs. It freaked me out. Been on meds since hoping to find a better alternative.

hello doctor, thank you for your precious information, what is interesting is that no doctor is referring to very high TSH like above 20. in my case I have been strugling with this high TSH level and have been on thyroid medication. the problem is that i'm not feeling these symptoms you mentioned except few of them like hair thinning (which is inheritted in my family), low heart rate, and daytime sleepiness. I wander what might be the possible cause?

Mine is 8.18 and I have all the symptoms . I thought I had a hyper thyroidism and the number is high. Thank you so much for explaining this to me, I was wondering why I was gaining weight when I don’t even eat junk. I am also very under nourished and my body is not absorbing nutrients and fat. Thank you thank you

My TSH on 10/10 was 34.5! For context, I was told I have Post Viral Thyroiditis in September. This all came on very suddenly at the beginning of August. No history of thyroid issues and generally very healthy up until this point. I woke up with a sore throat one day, and it went away a few days later but I could feel a lump on the right side of my throat. I saw a doctor a week later, when it seemed to be getting bigger (it wasn’t painful), and she diagnosed the inflamed thyroid - sent me for an ultra sound. The ultra sound suggested FNA and assumed it was cancerous. When I saw the Endo, he looked at my bloodwork (on 8/14 my TSH was .181 with T4 of 2.02) and sent for nuclear medicine scan. Had that a few weeks later and my body did not absorb the radioactive iodine. He concluded that it was Post Viral Thyroiditis and said to monitor blood, if I turn hypo my primary can treat me. On 9/17 I had more labs pulled - TSH then was .008 with T4 of 2.67. As you can imagine, I presented very hyperthyroid for the first 2 months, although my hyper symptoms only lasted about 4 weeks. I have felt every symptom of hypo since the test in September and now, more recently, the insanely high TSH. My doc put me on Levothyroxine (50) and my weight has continued to go up everyday. The left has helped energy levels but I am still very depressed, have brain fog, constipated, low heart rate (in the 50’s), hair loss, memory loss, complete malaise. My primary care is not a specialist and I’m concerned I’m not taking enough Levo. Are you familiar with Post Viral Thyroiditis? Any recommendations of what to do from here? Thank you so much for being a resource for all of us. I appreciate your videos and the podcast!

What ended up happening? My TSH is 5.9 & if it doesn’t go down by the next time I’m tested I’ll most likely go on an RX. I get tired really easily!

Hello in last video you mentioned that optimal TSH is 5. So what does TSH between 1.0 - 2.5 mean? That hypothyroidism is developing? Last year and this year I took they were 2,36 and 1,61

Hi ! Have followed you and am interested in all you have to say, I feel I have hypothyroidism, but blood values, standard, are T.S H 1.73 mU/L. Serum free T4 14.6pmol/L. These were done in Feb 2022. My symptoms are peripheral neuropathy, kidney disease, and recently my eyes are causing difficulties. Along with bad muscle pain. It seems my T.S.H levels are good but this was last year. I want a full blood panel done, but only had the above was done.I have insisted on seeing an Endocrinologist which I will be seeing May 3rd of this year. I will insist on a complete panel done from the Pituitary to all other levels.

Hello Doc. When I tested my TSH on 5th Feb, it read 42. I was on Biotin suppliment when I did this test so I decided to stop it and retest 8 days later. On 12 Feb, my T3 read 1.49, T4 read 6.3 and my TSH was 16.34. what does this mean. Also, how did my TSH level drop from 42 to 16.3 in a span of 8 days? Should I be starting medications? Please advise.

9.03 TSH. Exhausted. Hard to tell muscle weakness because i can trap bar shrug 3 times my body weight. Gaining extra muscle mass and my horrible tasting green drink has probably lessened the symptoms. I haven't gained any fat around my stomach due to insanity workouts. My barbell deadlift is about 2 times body weight. Weight training has saved my mental health and physical health.

My TSH has been in the 30’s for the last year, the doctor just keeps changing my meds. My latest labs came back with TSH at 91.3 and TPO at 229.
My throat hurts, I vomit most days, migraines, forgetfulness that’s effecting my work and deep exhaustion. Oh and my hair is falling out.
I just sent an email to my doctor begging for a referral to an Endocrinologist. I like my Dr but I cant keep waiting for her to figure out the perfect dose. I feel awful all the time and needs answers

I’m a healthy, active and energetic 69yo male. Pretty good lifestyle, decent diet ...
my T-3 and T-4 numbers are “normal”, mid-range, but TSH is high and climbing. 🤷‍♂️ most recent labs showed it at 6.72, up from 5.9.
    What gives??
